International Year of Chemistry 2011

IYC 2011 WAS INAUGURATED AT UNESCO HEADQUARTERS IN PARIS ON 27 AND 28 JANUARY 2011. THE THEME WAS DECLARED AS CHEMISTRY OUR LIFE, OUR FUTURE

Chemistry and Life

Introduction
All life forms on Earth depend greatly on chemistry for their survival , including us. Everything from surviving treacherous climates, to how our bodies develop, and work are all related to the world of chemistry.

Chemistry and the Climate

certain organisms are able to live under those extreme climates and temperatures (depths of the sea, scalding waters, and the unbearable cold of the Arctic) as their biology is able to use the chemicals to thrive in such places! The microbe group called Archaea, is able to live in such harsh conditions, because the use of enzymes called, extremozymes. These extremozymes coat and protect the microbes from extreme temperatures.

Chemistry and Us
Without chemistry it would be impossible for us to live. We need chemistry and chemicals for everything we do! When we eat food, a chemical mixture itself, is decomposed by chemicals called enzymes and acids. Our organs are protected from harmful acids, chemicals, with a layer of other chemicals in the form of mucus, without whitch our organs made up of chemicals would slowly dissolve away. But chemicals and chemistry may also harm us, such as the acids we find in our stomachs the pesticides and poisons. In fact any thing when not needed or in more concentration than the optimum levels will become poison and may affect our life. What is poison for one may be life giving for the other. We owe our life not only to the most abundant chemicals on earth water and oxygen, but also to the myriad other chemicals that make our life comfortable.

Chemistry has an important role in life. Everyday chemistry is about us, and everyday we use chemistry. Without it we would not be able to survive.

Todays talk
We talk about Petroleum which is itself a mixture of

chemicals and an important source of several important industrial chemicals and an important source of energy that drives our lives that allows us to move freely from one place to the other, where it is found and how it is found and recovered and its present and expected availability.

Nobody knows exactly how much oil is there on earth. Chances are that there may not be more than 20-25% of whatever has already been found. We have already consumed about 50 % of oil found. At present levels of consumption, 86 million barrels of oil per day, these reserves may not last longer than 40 years. It is likely that oil prices will go on increasing because of the rise in demand. We can help by reducing our need for petroleum and products. This is easily said rather than done. We use about 140 million tonnes of oil and oil products per year and we import 80 % of our oil requirement. Without oil our transportation, food production, distribution ,medicare and all services will be severely affected.
