The interest in our area was

once again demonstrated to us

this past weekend during the
2012 Parade of Homes. We had
literally thousands of folks tour-
ing all of the top developments
in our area. All of our customers
on the Tour of Homes told us
that they had incredible traffc
over the weekend and will be
able to spend the next several
weeks just following up on the
serious prospects. My thanks to
our sponsors and to the devel-
opers for helping make the 5th
Annual Catawba/Marblehead
Parade of Homes a HUGE SUC-
CESS!!!

worlds foremost authority on
the Port Clinton Oak Harbor

My old friend Bob Gatewood,

long overdue honor. The Cleve-

Academy of Television Arts
and Sciences gave the long time
Put-in-Bay entertainer an Emmy
Gold Certifcate in honor of his
2003 Emmy nomination. Bob
recently formed a new Coun-

One of the grand traditions of our area
is the annual National Rife and Pistol
Championships at Camp Perry. One of
the even grander traditions of the Na-
tional Matches is the First Shot Cere-
mony that opens the matches. Mondays
event was no different.
Lt. Gen. William E. Ingram, Director of
the Army National Guard, made his re-
marks noting the history of Camp Perry
and these shooting events. He noted how
Camp Perry and the National Matches
were begun under the leadership of then
President Theodore Roosevelt, a former
army offcer himself who led a famous
charge up San Juan Hill. He also took
note of the poor shooting skills of the
men in his charge. Ingram noted that
President Roosevelt recognized the need
for a continuing program to improve
shooting skills of both the military and
the civilian population.
Ingram was then handed a classic
World War II vintage M1 Garand and
fred the frst shot downrange open-
ing the 2012 National Rife and Pistol
Championships.
Prior to the frst shot, a pair of U.S.
Army Bradley Fighting vehicles rolled in
and demonstrated an evasive maneuver
while soldiers ran down the ramp in the
back and set up a defensive perimeter
followed by a single soldier carrying the
American Flag which was raised open-
ing the ceremony. The fag was handed
to Gary Anderson, Director Emeritus of
the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
The National Rife and Pistol Cham-
pionships will continue through August
15 at Camp Perry. The hosting of these
world renowned shooting events is a co-
operative venture among the CMP, the
National Rife Association and the Ohio
National Guard. They consist of the Na-
tional Trophy Rife and Pistol Matches
and Small Arms Firing Schools which are
mandated by federal law and governed
by the CMP and the NRA National Rife
and Pistol Championships, which are
conducted by the NRA in conjunction
with the National Matches. They have
been held at Camp Perry since 1907.
Over 5,400 individuals from all 50 states
competed in the CMP National Trophy
Matches and Small Arms Firing Schools
in 2011. Approximately 500 volunteers
and Ohio National Guard personnel
come to Camp Perry to support the Na-
tional Matches. In total, the National
Matches generate upwards of $14-Mil-
lion for the local economy each year.
President Barack Obama made
two unannounced stops in Ot-
tawa County Thursday during
the frst day of his Betting on
America bus tour.
Valerie Winterfeld was at Kozy
Corners with her kids on Thurs-
day when Secret Service agents
announced the Presidents plan
to stop there for lunch. She said
they searched the restaurant and
the diners and brought a dog
through to sweep the place. Then
in walked the President.
He sat down and ate lunch
right next to us, she said. He
was really down to earth. Almost
to the point where you didnt re-
alize it was the President.
According to Winterfeld, no-
body talked politics but instead
Obama patiently made his way to
everyone in the restaurant, shak-
ing hands, posing for pictures and
asking the locals how the summer
was going. He even shared his pie
with Winterfelds 8-year-old son,
Mason.

It was really cool, she said.
Mason and his sister, 7-year-old Emma,
were excited but a bit nonchalant about
the whole experience.
I dont think they understand the mag-
nitude of it, their mom said.
After the almost hour-long stop in Oak
Harbor, the President boarded his bus and
headed through Ottawa County to Ohio
269 and Bergman Orchards in Danbury
Township.
Valerie Sandy, a full-time teacher and
part-time employee at Bergmans, said
her workday few by Thursday with all the
commotion surrounding the visit.
It was just surreal, she said.
A Danbury police offcer delivered the
shocking news to the staffer when he
showed up and asked her to start clear-
ing shoppers out of the store. Next, Secret
Service agents arrived to do a sweep of the
building and the crew before the work-
ers were allowed back in to ready for the
visit. Soon after, the motorcade pulled in
and Obama, dressed casually in khakis and
an oxford shirt, greeted the owners, staff
and a few bystanders allowed back in for
the visit.
He just came right up to us and was su-
per nice, Sandy said, while is this really
happening? just kept running through
her mind.
Obama did some shopping, picking up
peaches and sweet corn and leaving his
change $17 in the Help the Berg-
man girls go to Las Vegas fund.
Sandy said it didnt take long for word of
the stop to spread around the area. Locals
streamed through the stand throughout
the day to hear the story.
After his stop at Bergmans, Obama con-
tinued on to a planned stop in Sandusky.

Going to the island or need a day at Monsoon La-
goon to cool off? Then support the American Cancer
Society by purchasing a duck for the second annual
Duck Drop to be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 18 at Monsoon
Lagoon. Your $10 duck purchase will give you a choice
of a one-day Waterpark Pass to Monsoon Lagoon or a

Boat Line. All ducks will be dropped into the lazy river
at Monsoon Lagoon and the frst to fnish wins the
grand prize of $700. Second is $500 and third will be
$300 worth of local gift certifcates. Last year it took
4 minutes for the ducks to race around the lazy river.
Support the cause by purchasing your tickets today
in memory or honor of someone you know who has
suffered with cancer. These tickets are available at the
OurGuest Inn & Suites, 220 E. Perry St. in Port Clinton

Have you been noticing giant black
plumes of smoke in the sky around
Lake Erie lately? The local Pheasants
Forever chapter and the Ottawa Soil
& Water Conservation District have
been conducting prescribed burns as
a fundamental part of the Lake Erie
Cooperative Weed Management Area
program. This program aims to pro-
tect, restore, and enhance the West-
ern Lake Erie Basin landscape and
wetlands by coordinating efforts to
identify, prevent and control invasive
species.
The main target species is Phrag-
mites australis, also known as the
common reed. Phragmites is a non-
native, invasive wetland plant that
has a very complex root system and
spreads quickly by means of under-
ground rhizomes that produce new
shoots. Phragmites can grow to be
15-feet tall and is very tolerant to
changes; however, there is no mod-
ern day use for this reed and it chokes
out any other native vegetation that
would otherwise be benefcial to
wildlife and the condition of the wet-
land.
The process of eliminating this in-
vasive plant is to apply water-safe
herbicides for two seasons to ensure
that all the Phragmites in that loca-
tion has been killed. Afterwards, a
site-specifed prescribed burn is con-
ducted to rejuvenate the soil and ac-
tivate the native seed bank. In some
instances, seeds may be planted into
the burned area to increase the sur-
vival rate of native vegetation.
Since the start of this program in
the fall of 2010, nearly 2,500 acres
of Phragmites has been treated and
more than 100 property owners have
been a part of the solution. If you are
aware of Phragmites growing on your
property, contact the Ottawa Soil &
Water Conservation District at 419-
898-1595 to begin eliminating the
invasive plant and help restore your
wetland.
Thanks to grants received through
the Great Lakes Restoration Initia-
tive, this program is available free of
charge to landowners in Lucas, Ot-
tawa, Erie and Sandusky counties.

David R. Bush, PhD., Heidelberg
University, Tiffn, will present a pro-
gram at 7 p.m. July 16 at the Ida Rupp
Public Library covering his archeo-
logical work at the Johnsons Island
Confederate Prison and Cemetery.
Bush began his archeological study
of the Johnsons Island site in 1989.
Professor Bushs research has yielded
many signifcant fnds on the Island,
including the location of Fort Hill,
Fort Johnson (the prison stockade)
and the dock area. Excavations and
digs have been used to study several
of the sinks (latrines), the powder
magazine for Fort Hill, a prison well
and portions of two prison blocks.
The archeological research and ex-
cavations are being used to determine
the conditions in which the Confed-
erate Offcers were held and also to
locate abandoned personal posses-
sions that may be on the site. Much
has been accomplished through
Bushs efforts and the efforts of his
archeology students.
The Ida Rupp Public Library is
proud to have a distinguished re-
searcher as Bush speak at the facility
during the Lincoln: The Constitution
and the Civil War exhibition on dis-
play until July 31 and presented by
the American Library Association
and The National Constitution Cen-
ter.

Garden renovation
The Friends of Port Clinton Parks is pleased to an-
nounce the completion of the renovation of the garden in
Lakeview Park. Over the past several years, Maxine Carni-
com and Barbara McLaury, with help from their spouses,
have been restoring the garden. However, the crumbling
retaining wall and the narrow, uneven sidewalk around
the garden made it less at-
tractive than it could be.
That has all been changed
with the completion of this
project. The retaining wall
has been rebuilt and a new
handipcapped acecessible sidewalk now surrounds the
garden. The sidewalk connects with the sidewalk on the
south side of the paved parking lot to make the garden
truly accessible.
In addition, thanks to the generosity of Tom and Lois
Evans of Masonry Construction, a concrete pad has been
added along the garden sidewalk on which a park bench
will soon be placed. Tom and Lois also added six concrete
pads along the south sidewalk so the trash cans will no
longer have to sit on the sidewalk itself, obstructing foot
and wheelchair traffc.
To complete the renovation of the garden, the City of
Port Clinton has contributed a delightful bronze statue of
a young girl walking her dogs which has been placed on a
pedestal in the fron section
of the garden. The pedestal
is yet another generous gift
from Masonry Construc-
tion. It is a marvelous addi-
tion to a beautiful feature of
Lakeview Park.
The Friends of Port Clin-
ton Parks thanks all those
who have contributed to
this project over the past
year. Special thanks to the
Harry Stensen Memorial
Fund for a generous gift
to enable this project. The
next project the Friends
hope to complete is to pave
under the small pavilion in
the south-east quarter of
Lakeview Park. When this
project is completed, the
pavilion will be rededicated
as the Underwood Pavilion,
in memory of Bob Under-
wood, a long-time board
member of Friends of Port
Clinton Parks and a great
friend and benefactor of
this community.

The National Oceanic & Atmospheric
Administrations National Centers for
Coastal Ocean Science issued the frst-
ever seasonal harmful algal bloom fore-
cast for Lake Erie at an all-day press event
Thursday at Ohio State Universitys Stone
Laboratory. The forecast predicts a mild
bloom, similar to conditions last seen in
2007 and about one-tenth the size of last
years bloom.
A mild bloom is great news for this
year, said Dr. Jeffrey Reutter, Director of
Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory.
But this is happening because were in
a drought, not because phosphorus load-
ing to Lake Erie has improved. If we have
a real wet spring in 2013, we could be
right back to where we were.
Phosphorus, which is contained in
many commercial fertilizers, tends to be
the nutrient that determines how much
this harmful algal species can grow in
Lake Erie. Phosphorus usually enters the
lake in the form of fertilizer runoff from
agricultural felds, as well as through
combined sewer overfows caused by
heavy rains.
Representatives from NOAA, the Uni-
versity of Toledo, Heidelberg University
and Ohio Sea Grant were on hand to not
only answer questions related to the fore-
cast and HABs in general, but also dem-
onstrated techniques used to sample algal
blooms as part of a science cruise onto
Lake Erie. Sampling algal concentrations
is an important part of validating and re-
fning computer models like the one used
to create NOAAs forecast, because it al-
lows researchers to determine whether
model predictions match up with actual
conditions in the lake.
Its not enough to have satellite imag-
es, explains Dr. Richard Stumpf, Ocean-
ographer at NCCOS. Without feld data,
you have nothing. This summer, that
data will be collected at Stone Lab to help
NOAA modelers further improve the al-
gorithms used to convert satellite images
of Lake Erie into actual and predicted
algal concentrations. Collaborations
with the National Center for Water Qual-
ity Research at Heidelberg University, as
well as with the University of Toledo, also
continue to provide information on nu-
trient levels in the lake and its tributaries.
In addition to the morning press events,
a live webinar also allowed additional
reporters and the general public to ask
questions about the forecast, HABs and
nutrient loading in Lake Erie. More than
100 people attended the online session,
which is available for viewing at go.osu/
habsforecast.
Harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie most
often consist of Microcystis, a cyanobac-
terium more commonly called blue-
green alga that can produce a liver
toxin called microcystin. The toxin can
be removed from drinking water drawn
from the lake, but increases the cost of
water treatment by $3,000 or more per
day. In addition, Microcystis can severely
reduce tourism income, as recreational
water use is made hazardous by the toxin,
or unpleasant by layers of blue-green al-
gae foating on the waters surface. Being
able to forecast the HABs extent allows
community offcials and tourism manag-
ers to prepare for its impacts and adjust
seasonal budgets in advance instead of
reacting to the event as it happens.

The OSS Joint Solid Waste Manage-
ment District sponsored the sixth an-
nual Earth Camp in Ottawa, Sandusky
and Seneca counties during the month
of June. More than 180 students enter-
ing grades 1-6 in the three-county dis-
trict attended the one-day camp that
offered fun activities on recycling topics
and lessons on the importance of our
natural resources. Camps were held on
different days at Lakeview Park in Port
Clinton, Conner Park in Fremont and
Meadowbrook Park in Bascom.
Campers were separated into three
groups: Planet Protectors, Go Green
Gang and Recycling Rock Stars and each
group rotated through stations. Team
fags were made and carried with pride
to each session during the camp.
Specifc activities included Minute to
Win It Challenges, where campers com-
peted against teammates and learned
how to create their own games at home
by reusing materials around the house.
Composting 101 taught campers about
the components needed to produce a
good compost pile and its benefts. A
hands on activity, Extreme Papermak-
ing, allowed campers to add materials
such as seeds, glitter, fower petals, etc.
to their paper pulp in the process of
making their own paper. The children
learned the importance of properly dis-
posing of their trash by participating in
a litter cleanup. They also challenged
one another during a recycling obstacle
course. Campers took home baskets
made from old brown paper bags they
decorated. Each participating child re-
ceived a certifcate of achievement.
The guest speakers for the camps in-
cluded: Mike Conner, director of the
Franciscan Earth Literacy Center who
spoke on the importance of our natural
resources, renewable and non-renew-
able energy and solar power during the
Seneca County Earth Camp. The guest
speaker for the Sandusky County Earth
Camp included Magee Marshs Seasonal
Naturalist, Emily Heppner, from the
Ohio Department of Natural Resources,
Division of Wildlife. Heppner shared
facts on native Ohio wildlife, the habi-
tats in which they live and showed the
children various animal skins. Educa-
tors Becky Simpson, Arianne Horton
and Paige Weichman from the Ottawa
County Soil & Water Conservation
District provided a program called Oh
Deer during the Ottawa County Earth
Camp. The program demonstrated to
the campers what components are nec-
essary for animals to survive in their
natural habitats.

Summer Earth
Camps a big success
Twenty-fve years ago, Kathy Jo Sch-
weitzer became a member of the local Ki-
wanis Club of Port Clinton. As the advisor
of Port Clinton High School Key Club, she
had no idea that her name would go down
in history. But it certainly did, as she was
recently honored at the Kiwanis Interna-
tional Convention in New Orleans, with
the KI Legion of Honor Award. As a Dis-
tinguished Past-President, Schweitzer has
become one of the frst women (July 7,
1987 to Sept.30, 1988) in the world to join
the all-men service organization and to be
invited to this celebration of the 25th An-
niversary of Women in Kiwanis.
It was a long road before Schweitzer, or
any other woman, could become a Kiwan-
is member. While amendments to allow
women as offcial members continued to
fail year after year, that didnt stop wom-
en from taking on numerous roles. One
woman regularly attended a California Ki-
wanis club meeting for 58 years, but wasnt
allowed to be a member; she played the
piano during the meetings. Women not
only helped as musicians, but also were
the center of many Kiwanis social events.
Ladies nights became popular in the early
years, when men could invite their wives/
signifcant others to experience Kiwanis
fellowship.
Starting in 1973, the subject of open-
ing Kiwanis membership to women was
brought up in spirited debates for more
than a decade at every international con-
vention. Some felt that having women
would bring too much change. Others
were distressed to know that their spouses
must remain second-class persons, doing
much of the work, but not being able to
be a full-time member. Then, at the 1987
convention in Washington, D.C., 14 clubs
sponsored Amendment 2, fnally allowing
women into membership, passing by a 2/3
majority vote. Today, women make up 26
percent of Kiwanis membership world-
wide.
The Kiwanis Club of Port Clinton has a
membership of 69, including 19 women.
The club members have been able to give
many years of service by not only working
with/supporting athletic and other com-
munity organizations, but also providing
youth programs such as two Key Clubs,
Builders Club, Terrifc Kids, Key Leader,
Students-of-the-Month and Scholarships.
The clubs mission is clear: Kiwanis is a
global organization of volunteers dedicat-
ed to serving one child and one commu-
nity at a time. This is why both men and
women are now welcome, because it takes
everyone to accomplish this.
At the New Orleans Kiwanis International Convention, Port Clinton Kiwanis Distin-
guished Past-President Kathy Jo Schweitzer (center) received the 25-year Legion of
Honor Award, for being one of the frst Kiwanis women members in the world. Also
pictured are Kiwanis International President Alan Penn and First Lady, Geri.

art scholarships in 2012.
Ilene Hamilton, from Terra State Community Col-
lege, received $300 and is a second-year student. She
won Best of Show in the schools recent art show.
Port Clinton High School students from art teacher
Cheryl Knapps classes have also been chosen for schol-
arships. First place of $100 went to Katrina Lindsley;
second place, $75, went to Taylor Gray; third, $50, went
to Kayleigh Householder; and three prizes for honor-
able mention, $25 each, went to Eryn Binder, Teri Met-
calf and Cameron Albright.
Judges Rosemary Schramm, Alice Holly and June
Douglas said it was a diffcult decision process because
everything at the recent show held at the Port Clinton
Performing Art Center was so well executed. They were
all winners.
Over many years, the Port Clinton Artists Club has
donated thousands of dollars for the development of
students in fne art. You may view art club members

EHOVE Adult Career Center celebrated its 17th grad-
uation ceremony for the Certifed Surgical Technol-
ogy program on June 28. Seven graduates includ-
ing Nicole Koester from Port Clinton attended the
10-month full-time program at EHOVE.
Class speaker Noelani Brown started off the ceremo-
ny: We started out as bartenders, factory workers and
stay-at-home moms, and now we stand before you as
proud surgical technologists.
This program lives up to its reputation, she said.
We were told we would be given the fundamentals
and tools that would change our lives. We now possess
them.
EHOVE Superintendent Sharon Mastroianni shared
some congratulatory remarks. Congratulations to the
Surgical Technology Faculty who set the bar high, held
the students accountable and told them every day
you can do this, said Mastroianni. You taught them
by example and demonstrated that hard work does pay
off.
Graduates certainly learned a lot in this program. A
Surgical Technologist is an allied health care profes-
sional who provides surgical care in a variety of set-
tings. They apply sterile and aseptic techniques, pass
instruments and assist in various ways.
Upon completion of the program, Surgical Technol-
ogists are eligible to sit for the National Certifcation
Exam. EHOVE continues to have a 100 percent pass
rate on this certifcation exam.
Every graduate had an internship and some of gradu-
ates already have jobs lined up.
EHOVE Career Center will begin the next Surgical
Technician Program full-time in August. A part-time
program also begins in January. For information, con-
tact EHOVE Adult Career Center at 419-499-4663, ext.

Paege Murphy will teach a Drawing
Workshop on Saturday, July 14, at the
Sutton Center, 1854 Perry St., sponsored
by the Port Clinton Artists Club. Murphy
specializes in pencil and colored pencil
drawings. She displays and sells her art in
Johns Nautical Shop and Smiths Coffee
Shop in Sandusky, and is the drawing in-
structor at Pat Catans, where she teaches
Introductory Drawing, Colored Pencil
Florals and her true love, teaching both
animal and human eyes. She also is an ac-
tive participant in the Sandusky Art Walk.
Murphys drawing workshop will be on
Creating Your Own Unique Face. Students
will be taught how to draw eyes, noses,
mouths and ears, and then given a visual
reference guide of the above to use in cre-
ating their own unique face. After adding
hair, eyebrows and eyelashes, it will be
great fun to see the different faces created
in this class.
Murphy will supply drawing paper. Stu-
dents will need one kneaded eraser and
graphite pencils H, HB, 2B, 3B and 4B,
or a set of various graphite pencils. A few
seats remain for this class. Contact Kathie
Widing at 419-341-0817 for information.

Four teams from the Lake Erie Flag Football League
traveled to Michigan to compete in a charity tourna-
ment June 23. The St. Judes Play for a Cure tourna-
ment, held at North Walled Lake High School, was
hosted by Michigan Youth Flag Football and boasted
39 teams across seven divisions. LEFFL was represented
with a team in frst-, second-, third- and ffth-grade divi-
sions.
The frst-grade team, LEFFL Rockets, coached by Les
Buhro, made its frst appearance at such a tournament.
Finishing with a record of 5 and 0, the team of 5- and
6-year-olds calling themselves the Red Wall of Pain,
took home a championship trophy.
Great job, boys! You made an old coach proud, said
Buhro at the conclusion of the all-day competition.
The second-grade team, coached by Fred Petersen,
also made its frst appearance, struggling with a diffcult
bracket and fnishing in third place with a 2 and 2 re-
cord. The team, outftted in green and white jerseys, is
also called the LEFFL Rockets.
The third-grade team, coached by Jake Jacobs, compet-
ed in the Michigan State Championship Tournament in
November, fnishing in second place. Finishing their di-
vision with a record of 5 and 0, they too brought home a
championship trophy. Jacobs team enjoyed success last
year, winning a regional tournament in Mentor to earn a
paid bid to the National Championship Tournament in
Kissimmee, Fla., in January.
Craig Ish made his third appearance in Michigan, hav-
ing coached his team in the Michigan State Champion-
ship Tournament in 2010 and 2011. With a fnal record
of 4 and 0, this win was the teams third consecutive
frst-place fnish. This win was especially impressive for
the LEFFL Patriots, a group of fourth-graders who had
to compete in the ffth-grade division due to lack of in-
terest in the fourth-grade division. It was quite an ac-
complishment!
Everybody was talking about how good the teams
from LEFFL are. Thats the statement you want to make
when going to a tournament. Nicely done, said Bryan
Ledin, executive director of Michigan Youth Flag Foot-
ball.
LEFFL President, Eric Parker had this to say follow-
ing Saturdays big wins: I am so proud of the boys and
coaches, way to bring home the hardware! Tradition
is what we are building, with lots of great memories!
The LEFFL began in the fall of 2005 with just 46
players as an option to soccer. The Spring 2012 sea-
son had more than 170 players across three divisions.
This league provides young players boys and girls
a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in non-
contact, continuous action while learning lessons in
teamwork.
