SENIOR YEAR SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT Students will choose one of the following books, and write 3 Edline

discussion entries over the summer. During the school year, students will write an essay comparing their summer reading book to a book being read in class. The discussion posts will be the only source students can refer to when writing the essay. The discussion posts must be completed BEFORE the first day of school. Please note that if you are taking Honors English, you will be required to complete an additional assignment that includes reading two additional books. SUMMER READING TITLES: 1000 Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Lauren Hillenbrand Discussion Directions: Log onto Edline, you need to be logged on to access the discussions. Look on the home page (bottom right) for the Summer Reading, click Senior. Click the link on the webpage to open the discussion (prompts 1, 2, or 3 below). Click Comment to access the Add Comment page. Discussion Entries (3): While reading the chosen book: 1.) Identify a character that faces a physical, emotional, or psychological obstacle. Describe the character and the obstacle and explain why he or she has trouble dealing with it. Use AT LEAST THREE specific examples/passages from the book. Be sure to cite page numbers. 2.) Explain the various ways your chosen character deals with the obstacle using AT LEAST THREE specific examples/passages from the book. Be sure to cite page numbers. 3.) Discuss how your chosen character overcomes and the obstacle and the impact it has on his/her life using AT LEAST THREE specific examples/passages. Be sure to cite page numbers. NOTE: examples used in answering discussion questions should be EXACT QUOTES from the literature using quotation marks around the example to show that the exact words were taken from the book page numbers should also be included. During the school year, your teacher will assign the following essay question. You should print out and keep your discussion entries in order to use them to assist you in writing the essay. Essay: People of all ages and cultures face obstacles of one kind or another. Some obstacles may be physical while others may be emotional or psychological. Choose a character from your summer reading selection and a character from our assigned classroom selection that has faced some obstacle. In a well-developed essay, compare and contrast the two characters, the obstacle they faced, how they overcame it, and how their success impacted their lives. This essay is will be completed in class, NOT over the summer.
