He says the problem with teachers is What the kids gonna learn from someone who decided that the best option in life is to become a teacher. I decided to bite my tongue instead of his, And resists the urge to remind the other dinner guests That its also true of what they say about lawyers. Because were eating after all and this is supposed to be a polite conversation. I mean youre a teacher Taylor, cmon be honest, tell us what you make. And I wish he hadnt done that, ask me to be honest Because you see I have this small policy in my classroom about honest and ass kicking which is if you ask for it then I have to let you have it. You want to know what I make? I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional medal of honor And I can make an A- feel like a slap on your face How dare you waste my time with anything less than your very best? I make them sit 40mins in a study hall with absolute silence No, you may not work in groups No you cant ask me a question so you better put your hand down Why wont I let you go to the bathroom? Because youre bored and you dont really have to go to the bathroom. Do you? I make parents tremble in fear when I call around dinner time Hey, this is Mr. Marly, I wish Im not calling at the bad time. I just want to talk about something your son said today. To the biggest bully in my class he said, Leave that kid alone, I still cry sometimes dont you? And it was the noblest act of courage that Ive ever seen in my entire life Because I make parents see their child for who they are, and who they can be. You want to know what I make?
