October 1997

A man should keep his friendship in constant repair - Samuel Johnson (1755).

BANDS OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER ARE 80 AND 17 METRES

Friends Just enough room to draw your attention to my editorial in FOCUS 32 for more articles, please. If you havent yet returned your ballot form to GW3KGV, then please do so by 20 October. See you at Lords? Committee meeting held on 30 August attended by all members and G3PDL (President), and G3WGV and Maud Slater for specific agenda items. Arrangements for the presentation of the 1997 G3FXB Memorial Trophy were agreed and the new club ties were selling well. Final arrangements for Lords were agreed including the QSL collection, photo quiz, coasters and the special callsign GB5FOC for the station. It was agreed to hold the 1998 Annual Dinner at Lords and due to different contractual arrangements with the new owners, a ticket price of 29 is estimated. Maud presented the final accounts for 1996 audited by Doreen Puttick and it was not necessary to increase subscriptions for 1998. It was agreed to hold a ballot following the nomination of G3PDL, G3WGV and G4CEO for Committee, GW3KGV to act as Returning Officer and closing date for voting papers 20 October. It was agreed to re-print the FOC History Book and G3MXJ offered to write it. Estimates and options for printing, and the funding of it, were considered, and it was decided to ask the membership for donations (see September News Sheet). G3WGV gave a presentation on a proposed FOC Internet Web site following a suggestion from the 25th North American Dinner and agreement in principle at the previous committee meeting for FOC to have a Web page. G3WGV will arrange for the presentation to be available at Lords for members to give feedback and ideas and a proposal will be published in FOCUS 33 for consideration by members. G3MXJ said there were 476 members and 17 Associates. An objection to N3BB was considered and overruled. A suggestion from K5MA for rule changes to the Marathon was considered and it was agreed not to make any changes. The next meeting will be 22 November 1997 at G3MXJs QTH.

A71CW (1475): new call - A45XR. F9VN (1534): amend zip code - 66270.

It seems that some members do not correct their check-lists or memories when changes of members callsigns are made. More than 50% of the members I have worked since my change of call have no clue at all about who I am any more. I update my check-list with every call change that is published in the News Sheet and this is a plea for other members to do the same. plus anonymous donors and W6DU for a donation from the West Coast Dinner, and apologies for anyone missed out.

A red stamp on this News Sheet will indicate your 1998 subscription is due. Please note the following guidelines: 1. The 1998 rate is 14 for the UK, 16 for Europe and 18 or US $30 for non Europe. This is the same as for 1996 and 1997. 2. Subscriptions are due on or before the 1st January 1998. 3. All members, with the exception of those in North and South America, should pay in sterling to me at Wychwood, Park Lane, Maplehurst, Horsham, West Sussex, RH13 6LL. Cheques and bank drafts should be made payable to First Class C.W. Operators Club and not to me personally. Cheques in currency other than sterling cannot be accepted as it costs more in bank charges to change the cheque than its value! 4. All North and South American members should send their dues to Elliott Wolheim, W2MUM, at 41 Silversmith Lane, Levittown, NY 11756, USA with cheques made payable to E. Wolheim. Elliott is a keen stamp collector and really appreciates any enclosures with your cheques. We all receive a fair amount of foreign mail and sending any surplus stamps to Elliott will ensure they find a good home. A number of members are in credit by varying amounts and if there are any queries I can either be contacted direct, via the mail or telephone (01403 891342), or via G3MXJ or G4BUE. As in previous years, it will not be my policy to issue receipts against cheques, bank drafts, etc. I plan to collect subscriptions at Lords, particularly from overseas members to avoid bank charges and inconvenience. I am sure Elliott and I can rely on your cooperation as always. Many thanks.

SUBSCRIPTIONS by Maud Slater

A45XR: Chris, SP5EXA, (ex A71CW) is now QRV as A45XR. AA5DX: Suzanne and Ron are selling their Caribbean business and moving back to their Texas QTH by the spring of 1998. DJ9SB: Congratulations to Renata on being the first YL in the UFT CW Contest (French club) in December. F3DM: Older members will be saddened to hear that ex-member (520) recently became a Silent Key, aged over 80 years. G3LHJ: Sylvia and Derrick missed Lords this year due to their holiday with their globe trotting friends clashing. Derrick says he was outvoted four to one! G4ZVJ: Andy will be in the Far East 17 October/8 November and will be QRV as DU3/AH8F and possibly other calls. He will also be QRV again 21 November/2 December as 9G5VJ, with Steve, G3VMW, as 9G5SW, and (non-member) Ken, G4RWD, as 9G5WD, mainly CW on the WARC and LF bands, and in the CQ CW Contest as 9G5VJ multi-single. They have a Web page at <www.bramham.demon.co.uk>. G8VG: Pete is enjoying his new IC756 and says the DSP filtering is really magic and pulls the weak guys through the QRM. K3ZO: Fred was QRV from 14 September as HSZAR, and goes QRT 6 October. OK1CZ: Peter was QRV 13/19 September as TF/OK1CZ/P from various call areas, including TF7 Westman Island (EU-071), with an IC706 and a Windom antenna. OZ4UN: Paul will be in Washington DC on business again in November. W1PL: Laci had to cancel his plans to attend Lords as his eyes were playing up. He hopes his doctor will allow him to attend the Florida Dinner.
