noise measurement & analysis capability statement

transport infrastructure | community infrastructure | industrial infrastructure | climate change

Noise has become a signicant environmental issue, with the quality of the acoustic environment affecting work, recreation and sleep.

pitt&sherry offer a broad spectrum of acoustic consulting services including: Noise Measurement pitt&sherry operate a variety of Type 1 and 2 sound level meters that meet AS1259 measurement precision specications and the requirements of the National Measurement Act 1960. We have an in house Bruel & Kjaer 2260 Observer, and lease additional meters on an as-required basis, thereby ensuring that we always have the right equipment for the job. Noise measurement procedures take into account factors such as the siting of instrumentation, other noise including extraneous sources, local meteorological conditions, observer location, site dimensions and dominant (intrusive) characteristics of the sound such as tonality, impulsiveness, modulation and low frequency. Typical areas of application include: Measurement and assessment of road trafc and railway noise Measurement of sound pressure levels at receptor premises in relation to the measurement or assessment of noise emitted from commercial or industrial activity Noise surveys relating to particular noise emitting activity including sporting and other entertainment activities Background noise level measurement Air blast measurements in relation to extractive industry blasting activities Wind farms Noise emissions from discrete items of equipment. Noise Impact Studies pitt&sherry personnel are able to undertake noise impact assessments of development proposals. These usually take the following outline approach: Identify potential impacts and the times during which these impacts are likely Undertake a site acoustic survey at relevant receptor premises, to measure existing noise levels Determine noise limits at each receptor site Predict, by numerical modelling, the noise levels arising from the proposed development at the receptor premises and compare with the limiting values

Investigate noise mitigation measures if required. Trafc Noise Modelling & Prediction pitt&sherry use SoundPLAN to assess likely future trafc noise from road projects, and to design and evaluate noise mitigation benets from noise mounds and barriers. SoundPLAN is a leading international noise software model that is operated by over 3000 rms in more than 30 countries. SoundPLAN is a three dimensional graphics oriented program that can present high quality graphical and tabular predictions of noise against a wide range of international noise standards. Acoustic Condition Studies for Noise Sensitive Developments An increased focus is being directed at controlling development in inappropriate areas for example residential subdivision of land already subject to high ambient noise by restricting the extent of development or by requiring the provision of noise mitigation measures that will enable the relevant acoustic quality objectives to be met. pitt&sherry are able to assist developers and regulatory authorities to assess the likelihood that noise levels at proposed noise sensitive developments will exceed relevant acoustic environmental quality objectives, and to develop appropriate mitigation measures if required. Regulatory Compliance pitt&sherry are able to undertake measurement and assessment work directed at establishing regulatory compliance for a range of activities and industries including: Building construction and demolition sites Road construction and maintenance activity Blasting activity in the extractive industries Wind farms Sporting events Outdoor concerts Licensed premises Miscellaneous noise sources such as chainsaws, security alarms, vegetation cutting equipment and the like.
