ts the color. Its the massive pool on the patio. Its the football-sized backyard for Fido. No, to me, its the little things that make my house a home. Small, but comforting items like that old lamp at my bedside, my favorite socks as fuzzy as a babys blanket, and even that old 1980s blender my mother drags around from house to house make any four walled structure feel like my home. It is a tradition in many families to have a humongous garage sale before the big move, but before various strangers wander off with your unwanted belongings, make sure you set a few things aside for your new home. These few things dont have to be large, expensive, or even in good condition, but they do have to have the ability to bring sentimental value to your new home. By sentimental value, I mean the ability to turn a brand new house into your home. If you

It Will Never Change

choose the right belongings to bring, you will feel like youre living in your same old house, even though it may be 10,000 miles away. Im getting ready to go off to college soon and those depleted, dilapidated dorms arent exactly welcoming places to the average college freshman. But at each college dorm I walk into, I force myself to close my eyes and envision myself living there, complete with that old lamp at my bedside, my fuzzy socks and maybe even the 1980s blender that hardly works. With all of my familiar possessions, that previously vacant dorm is now my home. To be my home, my shelter doesnt even have to be a house. My home is also my bright red four-man tent. I know what you are thinking. The answer is no. When I am camping, of course I dont haul my bulky lamp or blender with me. However, I do manage to throw my fuzzy socks into my backpack. And because I have owned my neon red tent for such a long time now, it is now considered my home. Not because of the color or brand, but because I am comforted by the way it leaks in the upper right hand corner and the way the pole splits down the middle when I try to thrust each section together. Its the little things like these that comfort me and make my house a home, but would be a mere nuisance to anyone else. Dont just move into a new house; move into a new home with your own sentimental belongings. It may not be a blender, a lamp or a pair of socks, but find something you cherish that will always make you feel at home.
