Week 5 Day 1

PRAYER PROMISE: HEBREWS 4:15-16 (HCSB) "We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time. 1. Lesson Review (a) Eight Reasons God Answers Prayer (b) Four Reasons God Doesn't Answer Prayer (c) Ten Principles for Asking in Prayer Petition is asking for yourself, your family, your church or your group. (a) Abram (Abraham) asked God for a son. Genesis 15:2 But Abram said, Lord God, what can You give me, since I am childless and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? (b) Hannah prayed for a son. 1 Samuel 1:10-11 Deeply hurt, Hannah prayed to the Lord and wept with many tears. Making a vow, she pleaded, Lord of Hosts, if You will take notice of Your servants affliction, remember and not forget me, and give Your servant a son, I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and his hair will never be cut

(c) King Hezekiah was dying and prayed for a child 2 King 20:1-3 In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, This is what the Lord says: Put your affairs in order,[a] for you are about to die; you will not recover. Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, Please Lord, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and wholeheartedly and have done what pleases You. And Hezekiah wept bitterly. (d) Zechariah and Elizabeth prayed for a child. Luke 1:13 "The angel said to him: Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. God heard and answered all of the petitions above! 3. Personal petition is acceptable to the Lord since He answers and even encourages these personal requests. God is pleased to hear your personal requests. God's purpose in encouraging petition is to mold you into a certain kind of person. (a) Abraham didn't just receive a son, God gave him a nation. (b) Hannah became a mother and motherhood changed her into a woman of God. (c) Hezekiah became one of Israel's greatest kings. Prayer is simply open honest communication with God. It is an expression of your heart to Him for He knows exactly the condition of your heart at any given moment. Open dialogue with God will cause the requests of the prayer to be answered.

Week 5 Day 2

1.

PRAYER PROMISE : PSALM 91:15 When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will rescue him and give him honor. PETITION : ASK FOR YOUR PERSONAL NEEDS Petition God for your personal needs. Jesus authorized a series of personal requests. Matthew 6:9-13 : The Model Prayer (The Lord's Prayer) Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, Your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Jesus taught us to pray for three general areas i. Physical Needs (your daily food) Jesus wants you to pray for physical needs but not for fleshly desires.

Proverbs 30:7-9 Two things I ask of You; dont deny them to me before I die: Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me. Give me neither poverty nor wealth; feed me with the food I need. Otherwise, I might have too much and deny You, saying, Who is the Lord? or I might have nothing and steal, profaning the name of my God. Thot : Ask for REAL NEEDS and not WANTS. Be truthful in your petitions.

James 4:3 You ask and dont receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your evil desires. Thot : Ask God in prayer with the RIGHT motives, not with evil intent. ii. Restoration of Broken Fellowship (forgiveness of sins) Seek His forgiveness and turn away from your sin. iii. Protection from Forces Beyond Control (deliverance from temptation and the evil one.) Temptation : an enticement to sin, a trial, a testing. God will not allow you to be tested beyond what you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are able to bear it.

Luke 6:12-13 : Jesus Chosed His 12 Disiciples During those days He went out to the mountain to pray and spent all night in prayer to God. When daylight came, He summoned His disciples, and He chose 12 of themHe also named them apostles. Mark 1:35 : Jesus Prayed Before He Preached in Galilee Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place. And He was praying there.

Gifts from the Father of Heaven. God gives good gifts to meet your needs in accordance to His will. i. James 1:17 Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no variation or shadow cast by turning.

ii. Matthew 7:7-11 Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! 4. God does not want you to be petty or immature because one day you will reign with Christ. You are royalty and nobility. Our personal petitions should be directed by the Holy Spirit. He reveals the kind of person you are to become a witness, a Kingdom worker, a giver, a godly parent or spouse, or one who offers praise to Him in prayer. When you pray, emphasize growing spiritually. Pray to become like Him and like Jesus. Pray for ways to maintain the honor of the family name-Christians and for characteristics God will develop in you. Prayer is not quaint and tidy, pious or technical. God-honoring prayer is raw, authentic, cries of utter helplessness and shameless pounding on Gods door. Its being unconcerned about formality and gaining the good opinion of others. It is simply to ask for his help to build His Kingdom, to live His calling, to be His witnesses, to forgive others, to escape temptation, and to see His great renown until He gives you the divine resources to feed the spiritually poor and walk to the front lines again

Keep trusting in God. Trust is a vital component of a family relationship and a basis for prayer. In 1 Chronicles 5:20, God answered the prayer of the Israelites and helped them defeat their enemies. 1 Chronicles 5:20 They were helped in fighting them, and God delivered the Hagrites and all their allies into their hands, because they cried out to him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted in him. You can trust God to lead you. What He leads you to become will always be the best. Prayer for Trust (by Thomas Merton) MY LORD GOD, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

James 5:17-18 (NKJ) Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit. What can we learn from Elijah regarding prayer?

1 Peter 5:5-7 Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you. iii. Brings greater authority to prayer. There is greater authority in united prayer. iv. Increases the amount of praying in your behalf. v. Broadens the understanding of how to pray for your need. Learn from others how to pray when you don't. Others may have the same experience and thus able to pray for you specifically. vi. Blesses those who have the privilege of praying for you. Report on answered prayers to those whom you have enlisted to pray for you so that they may be blessed and rejoice with you. vii. Strengthens the bond of love between you and those who pray for you. The bond of love is created or strengthened through praying for each other. viii. Secures strength for an area of personal weakness or failure. You will be strengthened and encouraged when you are victorious over your personal weakness through the prayer of others for you. 4. Praying For Others in Return To effectively pray for others, put yourself in the place of the one for whom you are praying. Think of problems, conflicts or pressure the person may face and emphatise with him/her. Suggestion for Praying Together Listen carefully for opportunities to respond to others' prayers. If a person makes a personal petition, intercede for that need or concern. If a person prays for forgiveness, you might ask the Lord for forgiveness, cleansing and restoration. If a person asks the Lord a question, be sensitive to the fact that God may speak the answer through you. 12
