OBJECTIVES :
At the end of the message, the congregation must be able to: 1. Recite 2 Timothy 1:12 by heart. 2. Enumerate at least 3 important things that they want to commit to God. 3. List down what the Bible says about Jesus (and what He is able to do) regarding these matters. 4. Act on our real purpose for living (to worship God).
Introduction: The Story of William Tell o The boy stood firm and still. He was not afraid, for he had all faith in his father's skill. The Story of Abraham Offering Isaac o 7Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, My father! Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? 8Abraham said, God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son. So the two of them walked on together. 9Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
The Point: o Both sons willingly committed their lives into their fathers hands, knowing full well that their fathers are able to keep them safe.
But first, lets take a look at some background information on Pauls second letter to Timothy.

2 Timothy is Pauls final (preserved) letter. At the time of this writing, Nero was attempting to stop the spread of the Christian faith in Rome by severely persecuting believers. Paul was in prison again during this time. He was old, suffering deprivation as a common criminal (2:9), deserted by most of his friends (1:15), and aware that his ministry was over and his death near (4:6-8,18). Source: Full Life Study Bible Notes The situation Paul was in before he died was not picture-perfect. Those with weaker faith may find this discouraging - the combination of old age, imprisonment, desertion of so-called friends, imminent death. But not to Paul. In his last letter to Timothy, he went on encouraging him to steadfastly endure in his faith, his calling, his life. Why? Because the cause he was suffering for was worth it! If we died with him, we will also live with him. If we endure, we will also reign with him. 2 Tim. 2:11-12 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Rom. 8:18 He was willing to suffer for the cause because he knew and believed in the One he was suffering for. Whom did Paul believe (put his faith on)? How Paul came to know Jesus How Paul came to be persuaded that Jesus is able to keep that which he has committed unto him 1. He experienced the work of God in his life. 2. He experienced the work of God in his ministry. (Acts 16:16-40; 18:9-11; 19:11-20; 20:7-12; 23:111; 27:13-44; 28:1-10; 1 Tim. 1:12-16) What Paul committed to Jesus
1. Jesus Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. (2 Tim.2:89) I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20)
1. He was trained in the law he knew the Scriptures. 2. He had a personal encounter with Jesus. (Acts 9:3-19, 22:1-21; 26:2-18; Gal.1:15-16)
1. His body. 2. His reputation. (1 Thess.2:2, 2:4b-5 3. His ministry. (Col.1:28-2:3, 2 Thess.1:11) 4. His life. (Phil. 1:2021)

(Let congregation recite the verse again) For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. 2 Timothy 1:12 (KJV)
Reflection: WHAT ABOUT YOU? 1. 2. 3. 4. What are the things in life that you most care about? Whom do you trust the most? How well do you know this person? Would you trust him/her with that which is most important in your life?
Whom do you believe (put your faith on)? The Government? You will be disappointed. Other People? You will be disappointed. Yourself? You will be disappointed. Jesus? You will never be disappointed. Isaiah 28:16 says, Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken. (NLT) In KJV, he that believeth shall not make haste. Barnes Notes: Hebrew:
The idea is derived from one who is alarmed, and flees to a place of safety. The prophet says here, that the foundation on which Zion was reared would be so firm that if a man trusted to that he would have no cause of alarm, however much the storms beat around it.
We need to know whom we believe! It will determine how we respond to lifes challenges.
What do you know about Jesus? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Jesus saves. Jesus heals. (Isaiah 53:4-5; Luke 6:19, 9:11) Jesus baptizes. Jesus is coming again. Jesus forgives our sins. (1 John 1:9)

Jesus is Lord. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Jesus is the author and finisher of my faith. Jesus is interceding for me. (Rom.8:34, 1 Tim.2:5-6, Heb. 7:25) Jesus can calm the storm, winds & waves with just one word. Jesus is the answer to all my needs. Jesus is the Resurrection & the Life. Jesus is the Way to the Father. Jesus is the Bread of life.
What do you commit (entrust) to Jesus? YOUR PAST 1. Mistakes & Failures Jesus forgives. / Jesus does not condemn us. Whatever you did in the past, God has already forgiven you (Eph.1:7, Hebrews 10:17; Psalm 103:2). He did not wait for us to come to Him; He made the first move (Rom.5:8). All you need to do is to come to Him, repent, and receive His forgiveness (1 John 1:9). You dont have to live in shame and guilt over it (Romans 8:1)!
God has promised us in His Word that His protection will be upon us (Ps.91:3-7; 121:3-8). Verse 7 says, The LORD will protect you from all evil But this does not mean that no physical harm will ever come to us. As long as we are here in this sin-corrupted earth, bad things may happen. The second part of the verse says He will keep your soul. Yes, God will protect us, but if and when He allows us to experience trials & hardships, he promised that He will keep our soul, or as Paul said, The Lord will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. (2 Tim.4:18) Paul was never exempted from physical danger, but the Lord always came through for him. Even when he died a martyrs death, which others who dont understand may see as a gruesome way to die, the Lords promise still prevailed. Because Paul committed his life to Jesus, he will be rescued from the evil attacks and get to spend eternity with God in heaven. Proverbs 14:32 When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous have a refuge. Extra Note (Matthew Henrys Concise Commentary): Great security is promised to believers in the midst of danger. Wisdom shall keep them from being afraid without cause, and faith shall keep them from being unduly afraid. Whatever is done, our heavenly Father's will is done; and we have no reason to fear (on Ps 91:1-8) 2. Daily Provision 3. Health Jesus is the answer to all my needs. Jesus is our Healer.

Jesus is the same yesterday, today & forever. Jesus is the author and perfecter of my faith. / Jesus is interceding for me.
As we continue to live our lives here on earth, we struggle with temptations. Much as we would like to live a perfectly holy life, we find it hard to do so. But praise God for what Christ has accomplished for us on the cross! He has made it possible for us to be righteous in the eyes of God. Our faith in Him makes us righteous, and as we continue to put our faith in him despite all the difficulties in life, we will be able to endure all hardships that life may bring. And we are not alone in this battle! Though in heaven, Jesus continues to intercede for us to God the Father. What is your part? More than trusting Jesus for our personal needs and salvation, we must be willing to suffer, give everything for the cause. Survival and success here on earth is good, but to what end? Paul said this to the Philippian church: I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Phil.1:20-21 Living life & making a living: theres nothing wrong with these, unless they keep you from what you were made to do. Why are you here on earth? What is your purpose? What is your reason for living?
We were made to worship God! The Hebrew root word for work/serve also means worship . Work is a form of worship. o When we minister in the church, it is worship. o When we offer our secular job to God, it is worship. (Col.3:17) o When we serve others and do it for the glory of God, it is worship. Worship requires work (effort). o Worship requires the sacrifice of: Our physical bodies living sacrifice, holy & pleasing to God (Rom.12:1) Our resources time, money, effort Our comfort we must be willing to endure hardship for the sake of the gospel Knowing whom we believe (Jesus), what He did for us, and what He is able to do should drive us into action to live for Him (worship Him) and to be willing to suffer for His cause!

I know not what of good or ill May be reserved for me, Of weary ways or golden days, Before His face I see. But I know Whom I have believed, And am persuaded that He is able To keep that which I've committed Unto Him against that day.
I know not when my Lord may come, At night or noonday fair, Nor if I walk the vale with Him, Or meet Him in the air. But I know Whom I have believed, And am persuaded that He is able To keep that which I've committed Unto Him against that day

boy stood firm and still. He was not afraid, for he had all faith in his father's skill. The arrow whistled
through the air. It struck the apple fairly in the center, and carried it away. The people who saw it shouted with joy. As Tell was turning away from the place, an arrow which he had hidden under his coat dropped to the ground. "Fellow!" cried Gessler, "what mean you with this second arrow?" "Tyrant!" was Tell's proud answer, "this arrow was for your heart if I had hurt my child." And there is an old story, that, not long after this, Tell did shoot the tyrant with one of his arrows; and thus he set his country free.
