htm Summary of Resources: Single-Sex Classrooms: Good or Bad for the Kids? http://news.yahoo.com/single-sex-classrooms-good-bad-kids191300227.html;_ylt=A2KLOzJrJP9PCAsAF6zQtDMD This article is stating that single-sex classrooms are not good for the kids involved and I happen to agree. Single-sex classrooms are supposed to benefit the boys and girls independently because they learn differently and a lot of public schools believe for that reason they should be taught differently. However, creating single-sex classrooms seems to create stereotypes. Single-sex education: the pros and cons http://www.greatschools.org/find-a-school/defining-your-ideal/1139-single-sex-education-thepros-and-cons.gs?page=all This article discusses the pros and cons of single-sex classrooms and stereotyping shows up on both the pro side and the con side. Some of the arguments for the pro side are classroom temperatures (girls learn better in warm temps while boys learn better in cooler temps), the opposite sex is a distraction as children get older so having singlesex classrooms keeps those distractions out. Some arguments for the con side involve children growing up and having to work in a world that is not single-sex so learning in single-sex settings limits opportunities to work cooperatively and co-exist successfully. The con side also said that gender differences for learning are not the same across the board, learning differences are based upon each child. The Case Against Single-Sex Classrooms http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/comment/2012/07/single-sex-education.html This particular article describes the main reasons as to why some people would choose single-sex classrooms and why some people would not. Overall, this article declared that the benefits for both boys and girls in single-sex classrooms would definitely benefit both boys and girls in general or in co-ed classrooms. Why Single Sex Education is spreading across the nation http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Latest-News-Wires/2012/0708/Why-single-sex-education-isspreading-across-the-US/(page)/2 This article is mainly a phone interview with, Dr. Leonard Sax, the founder of the Pennsylvania-based National Association for Single Sex Public Education. Sax is an advocator when it it comes to single-sex education. He makes good point when stating that single-sex education is nothing related to race when being related to Brown v. Board of Education. Video about single sex classrooms http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3MSJZu45iQ&feature=related this video provides a good overall introduction into single-sex education. Its a news report at a school at suburban St. Louise, explaining how the the principle has chosen

this type of learning. Boys and girls are separated and being taught in different ways using different topics and methods. For example, boys can move around the classroom and read books about monsters, while girls sit behind their desks listening to music and reading books about movie stars. Overall all students are being taught the same content but with different methods and topic. We can see how the statistics show an increase in single-sex education in the U.S.. The main concerns continues to be present is singlesex education enforcing gender stereotypes. What about the funding and resources for each classroom how would that be defined? Video about Fort Mills program- only 2 min and pretty good http://ed300-singlesexclassrooms.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html through this video we see the students point of view when it comes to single-sex education. From their point of view they enjoy being in single-sex education since there are less distractions. both the student and the parents are happy with the results of single sex education classroom down in For Mills Middle school. Website with info on gender learning differences http://www.education.com/topic/gender-differences/ What seems to make the biggest impact in single gender classrooms is not the fact that they are single gender so much as it is the teacher understanding and utilizing information about how the genders learn. While splitting up the classes can slightly improve test scores and grades, much greater improvements are seen when teachers are trained on how to teach using gender differences. An education website with a section on gender differences provides a multitude of resources on the subject of gender differences. One thing that multiple articles referenced was how important training the teachers is if you want to see an improvement in test scores. Another topic that was highlighted in several articles was how much more comfortable and safe students feel while in single gender classrooms. They are often able to better express themselves without feeling nervous. I think that this is an extremely important benefit. Students will get out of their education what they put in it. If they feel comfortable enough to express themselves and speak up in class, then they will get more out of their education. Also, I feel encouraged to know that training teachers on gender differences can have such an impact on student achievement. To me, this indicates that even without splitting up students into single gender classrooms, if we can implement different teaching strategies for the boys and girls in our classrooms, then we can increase the effectiveness of our teaching. Single-Sex vs. Coed: The Evidence http://www.singlesexschools.org/research-singlesexvscoed.htm There are many benefits of single sex education. It increases test scores, breaks down gender stereotypes, and decreases disciplinarian referrals. There are several different types of studies done to determine the effectiveness of these programs. Some look strictly at test scores and grades. These studies overlook what classes the students are taking. In single gender classrooms, girls are more likely to pursue subjects that have generally been deemed boy subjects and vice versa. For instance, at single gender schools, observers witness a larger percentage of girls participating in upper-level math and science classes and computer clubs. This is an example of how single gender classrooms help to break down gender stereotypes by providing all students with more opportunities. Other types of studies that are done are broken down by what schools are being studied. Some studies look at entire nations with a large number of single gender programs such as England or Australia. Others focus on one school before and after they institute single-gender education. The final type of study compares single gender and coed programs and tries to control for supplementary factors. Almost all of the studies that have been done, regardless of type, have found positive results from the

use of single gender education. While I hesitate to fully endorse single gender education, it is hard to ignore the facts. I think that in some cases single gender education is the only chance some schools have to offer all of their students a quality education. However, I dont think that such programs are for everyone. Some people thrive in coed environments and should not be arbitrarily removed from them any more than people that thrive in single gender environments should be removed from those environments. I think the important thing to realize is that students need to have this option made available to them. Students and their parents should be able to choose whether they want to learn in coed classrooms or single gender classrooms. Single-Sex education if ineffective http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/23/education/23single.html The article talk about the argument against same sex classrooms. It states that the evidence provided in support of these classrooms are mixed. It goes on to say that the separation of girls and boys is like segregation of races. Some say that it would not be segregation because there would be the option to be in a single sex classroom or not. PodCast http://www.npr.org/2011/10/25/141692830/are-single-sex-classrooms-better-for-kids The podcast is about half an hour long and provides the transcript to follow along. It presents both pros and cons of single sex classrooms. The information is presented from professionals in the field. It goes on to discuss how there have been many studies done throughout the United States but only a few are considered for their quality; even so, they usually come back with mixed results. Schools around the nation are implementing these programs trying to find a way to help their students. .
