Authors book highlights challenges
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
Jodi Wilhelm-Fiore has a hero.
Its not a celebrity, or an ath-
lete, or even her favorite child-
hood teacher.
Its one of her best friends,
Julie McgraveyWaicus.
Fiore met Waicus the summer
before her freshman year at East-
ern Regional High School.
Fiores family had just moved
from Berlin to Voorhees, and
Fiore said she was nervous about
making friends at a new school.
I was the shy new kid on the
block beginning my freshman
year at Eastern High School in
September of 1985, Fiore said.
The very first friend I made was
Julie. She was a standout fresh-
man athlete who was on varsity
squads for field hockey, basketball
and lacrosse. Julie brought me
out of my shell and made me in-
stantly feel accepted with her
cheery, positive disposition.
The two have remained close
friends over the years, and have
watched each other get married,
go deeper into their careers and
have children.
Fiores family includes two
children Nick, 15 and Dan, 14.
And Waicus and her husband
PJ are the proud parents of Jack-
son, 11, and Darcie, 9.
But there is one thing that sets
her children apart. Both were
born with Angelman Syndrome,
a disorder that affects her chil-
drens ability to speak and some
of their cognitive functions.
They are nonverbal and have
developmental delays. Their
brains work at a slower pace,
Waicus said. But they are happy
and outgoing. Very touchy-feely
and the life of the party.
Waicus said her children will
develop and progress, but may
hover around a first-grade level
for most of their lives. Jackson
mostly makes sounds, but Darcie
can speak 10 or so words, her
mother said.
There are only about 1,000 indi-
viduals across the country diag-
nosed with AS. Waicus said there
are only about 20 families with
multiple children affected, mak-
ing their familys situation ex-
tremely rare.
Darcie and Jackson communi-
cate through sign language. They
also rely on an iPad application
that speaks for them. If they are
hungry, they can type I want
and scroll through hundreds of
pictures, eventually choosing
chicken, or a cookie and so on.
Waicus kids attend the Larc
School in Bellmawr, where they
receive individual attention and

therapy.
Outside of school, the two com-
pete in Special Olympics events,
like track and swimming. Even
recently, Waicus said, Darcie took
home quite a few medals at the
state Special Olympics event held
at The College of New Jersey.
They also compete in the Chal-
lenger Baseball League, and take
part in music and dance therapy.
For Waicus, her way of giving
back and finding hope for her
children is in raising money and
awareness for Angelmans Syn-
drome. Every May, she helps to or-
ganize a local walk at Cooper
River Park in Pennsauken to
raise money for the cause. This
year, the event brought more than
600 people together, the biggest
crowd yet, she said.
She works with other grass-
roots organizations to get the
word out about disabilities.
Our goal is to break down the
barriers surrounding disabili-
ties, she said.
Waicus is constantly answer-
ing questions, too, whenever she
and the kids are out and about.
She remembers a time when
Darcie ran up to another little girl
at the mall and tugged on the
girls shirt. Darcie couldnt tell
the girl she liked her shirt. Her
mother knew what her daughter
was trying to say, but the other lit-
tle girl had no clue what was
going on.
She was just saying hi. Thats
her way of doing so, Waicus
said. Its constant education. We
just want to make everyone
aware.
She and Fiore have traveled to
Voorhees Middle School and East-
ern to talk to kids about disabili-
ties and to spread the message of
tolerance.
Just as Waicus shares her per-
sonal connection to disabilities,
Fiore has her own way of telling
hers.
Fiore has published three
books so far in the Lia-Ria series.
The books are a tool for parents to
share stories of hardship in a
way children can understand
them.
In the books, Lia-Ria, named
after Fiores grandmother, Leah,
who inspired her to write, and
one of her former favorite stu-
dents, Ria Perri, helps children to
understand difficult situations.
The first book Fiore published,
Lia-Ria and the Lockdown Drill,
talks about a world post-
Columbine, where students must
annually participate in a lock-
down drill blinds closed, win-
dows shut and students hiding.
Her most recent book, Lia-Ria
and the Ostrich Feathers, which
she published in May, presents
death to children in a manageable
way. Fiore dedicated the book to
her mother, who was killed by a
drunk driver when she was just 8
years old.
The second book Fiore pub-
lished is one Waicus holds near
and dear to her heart.
In Lia-Ria Meets the Angels,
three children, based of Fiores
sons and niece, meet Jackson and
Darcie in the park. And although
the two cant communicate ver-
bally, all of the children find
unique ways of communicating
with each other.
The duo says they have had
great success speaking to stu-
dents. Fiore reads her book and
Waicus tells the story of Jackson
and Darcie.
It really makes the kids appre-
ciate the gifts they have, walking
and talking, My kids didnt walk
until they were three. They just
realize they are fortunate,
Waicus said.
The books are available online
through Amazon.com. For more
information about Jackson and
Darcie, visit the familys website,

4 THE VOORHEES SUN JULY 25-31, 2012
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
Vatsal Gandhis got a bright fu-
ture ahead of him.
The 2012 Eastern Regional
High School grad is about to
begin his eight-year medical de-
gree at Duquesne and the Temple
University School of Medicine.
Even though the 18-year-old
has dreamed of entering the med-
ical field since he was a child, he
also spends his time focusing on
how to make his community
greener.
And, in his sophomore year, a
light went off.
When he heard his high school
was laying off 34 teachers, he
tasked himself with trying to find
ways to keep those teachers on
board, looking for ways to cut
elsewhere from the budget.
They always left the lights on,
even when no one was there,
Gandhi said.
Gandhi started doing his
homework. He researched wind
power, solar power and geother-
mal power, along with the more
traditional nuclear power and
coal power, hoping something
would be a fit for his school.
His research led him to solar
energy, which, he said, would
have saved the school $654,000 per
year for the schools energy bill
over 25 years.
Gandhi took his research to
school officials and district ad-
ministration in the hopes some
change could be made in his high
school to lower energy and elec-
tric bills.
He said staff listened to his
idea, but didnt move forward
with it. Gandhi said there wasnt
enough room for a solar field, but
even solar panels on the schools
roof would have been a huge fi-
nancial undertaking upfront.
Last summer, Gandhi partici-
pated in a research internship
with the University of Pennsylva-
nia. Penn chemistry professor
and co-director of PENNERGY
Dr. Andrew Rappe, along with Dr.
Alex Huang, a professor at NC
State University, reviewed Gand-
his research paper, A Green Pow-
ering of the Public Schools.
In his paper, Gandhi thanked
his teachers at Eastern who al-
lowed him to do his energy re-
search.
I would like to thank Mr.
William Crozier for teaching me
college-level chemistry which
helped me understanding the
chemistry behind the various en-
ergy sources; to Mrs. Cheryl
Roberts whose teaching of
physics thought me about power
and energy; and to Miss Roya
Nabi for her teaching of biology
to understand the greenhouse
gases and its impact on habitat;
and sincere thanks to Mr. Tull
and Mr. Melleby for allowing me
to access the school data, Gandhi
said.
Gandhi also received letters
from U.S. Department of Energy
and the White House, thanking
him for his extensive research
and interest in making his com-
munity more energy efficient.
Thank you for writing, Presi-
dent Barack Obama said in his
letter to Gandhi. I appreciate
hearing from you, and I share the
vision of millions of Americans
who want to secure our nations
energy future. We must seize this
important opportunity to create
new jobs and industries, reduce
our dependence on foreign oil,
and protect the public health and
our environment.
Gandhi said he is excited about
starting school this fall. Hes al-
ready reached out to his adviser
at Duquesne, who, he said, is
eager to read his high school re-
search.
Most likely Ill show it to my
Duquesne adviser, to try and
make a difference in Pittsburgh,
too, he said.

M
egans Law was, if anything,
an extremely forward-think-
ing way of ensuring that
convicted sex offenders were easily
identifiable wherever they might live
after spending time locked away. Now,
if one state senator has his way, sex of-
fenders would not only have to register
their residential locations, theyd also
be required to identify themselves as
convicted sex offenders on social-
media websites such as Facebook.
We applaud this bill, and hope it ulti-
mately winds up on the governors
desk to be signed into law.
In addition to having to publicly dis-
close sex-offense convictions, the bill,
sponsored by state Sen. Kip Bateman,
R-Somerset, would also require offend-
ers to list, on their public profiles,
home addresses, where crimes took
place and a self description.
While there will be some who say a
bill such as this one goes too far and
is an invasion of privacy we believe
its for the best.
Far too often, we hear stories of sex-
ual predators who use the Internet to
prey on the vulnerabilities of young
people.
A few years ago, the Dateline NBC
specials To Catch a Predator re-
vealed just how many people used the
Internet to set up what they believed
were trysts with young people.
The penalties for failing to comply
with the proposed law are swift, as
well. A sex offender caught with a pub-
lic profile that doesnt identify a
Megans Law status would carry with
it a potential fine of $10,000 and up to a
year-and-a-half in prison.
A similar law was adopted in
Louisiana recently.
We commend Bateman for propos-
ing this bill. And we hope other states
take notice and enact similar legisla-
tion. There is no doubt that by having a
law such as this one on the books, pred-
ators will think twice about preying
upon the young.
And the children of our state will be
that much safer because of it.
in our opinion
Taking Megans Law to Facebook
State Senate bill would require sex offenders to self-ID on social-networking sites
Is the proposed law
too invasive?
A bill proposed by state Sen. Kip
Bateman, R-Somerset, would require
convicted sex offenders to identify
themselves, as such, on social-network-
ing websites. Would such a law be fair?
I regard the theatre as the greatest of all
art forms, the most immediate way in which
a human being can share with another the
sense of what it is to be a human being.

The Voorhees Theatre Company (VTC)
is a non-profit community theatre based at
the Voorhees Schools Theater. The mission
of the VTC is to provide opportunities for
young people to experience theatre as per-
formers, technicians, managers and audi-
ence members. This year, the VTC is cele-
brating its 10th Anniversary.
Since forming in 2002, the VTC has
staged a wide array of productions, includ-
ing South Pacific, Legend of Sleepy Hol-
low, Grease, West Side Story, Peter Pan, To
Kill a Mockingbird, The Wizard of Oz,
Cabaret and Oliver.
One of the most successful programs of
the VTC has been the summer theatre
camp held at the Voorhees Middle School.
The camp provides a complete theatrical
experience and of-
fers a choice of
concentration on
performing theatre
or technical the-
atre. The perform-
ance camp pro-
vides instructions
in all aspects of
performing and a
chance for partici-
pants to perform
and stage a musical
at the end of camp.
Tech campers
focus on the tech-
nical support that
brings the magic
on stage to life.
Lighting, sound,
sets and props are vital parts to any show.
This years musical of the summer the-
atre camp will be Nifty Fifties. Perform-
ances will be Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m.,
Thursday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.,
Friday, Aug. 3, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday,
Aug. 4, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The theater is
located at the Voorhees Middle School.
The VTCs Young Adult Program will
present Legally Blonde on Aug. 9, 10 and 11
at 7:30 p.m., also at the Voorhees Middle
School Theater.
Another popular VTC program is 24
Hour Theatre. High school performers
gather as the clock starts on their 24 hours
of writing, planning, rehearsing and per-
forming original stage productions. One
night later, the results are put before a live
audience.
This year, VTC will be providing a $500
scholarship to a graduating senior from a
South Jersey high school who plans to pur-
sue a post-high school education and has
participated as a performer or technician
