Part Three
Read the following text and write a summary of it in the space provided on the
next page. Try to write about 100 words.
SLEEP
A good nights sleep involves both quality and quantity,
and while the amount needed varies from person to person,
experts generally recommend seven to eight hours. In one
study, seeking to identify the ideal length of sleep,
subjects spent 14 hours in the dark each day for four
weeks. At first, they slept about 11 hours a night, but
that decreased during the second and third weeks. By
the final week, they were sleeping an average of 8 hours
15 minutes a night, which is considered by some to be the physiological ideal.
However, research suggests that as far as mortality is concerned, the best survival is
experienced by those who sleep 6.5 to 7.5 hours.
If you feel refreshed in the morning and function optimally, then you are probably
getting enough sleep, and good quality sleep. If, however, the only thing that gets
you out of bed in the morning is the promise of caffeine, what should you do? Most
importantly, you should try to establish a regular pattern of going to bed and getting
up at the same time. The body has a natural 24-hour cycle and this can go out of
sync if you dont keep to a routine. But that doesnt mean you should go to bed if
youre not tired. If you go to bed too early, you may have trouble dropping off, or
suffer restless sleep.
Once youve established a regular routine that allows 7-8 hours sleep, what can you
do to maximise the chances of a good nights sleep? Just as you would warm up for
a workout, it seems that winding down as bedtime approaches is a good idea. A
warm bath, some relaxing music or gentle yoga can all get you in the mood for
slumber. Its best to pursue activities that calm the mind as bedtime draws near. That
rules out taking your laptop to bed, and means avoiding thrilling or violent films or
books, which could leave you feeling alert or apprehensive.
You also need to make sure your bedroom is conducive to a good sleep. The room
should be well-ventilated and completely dark. Your mattress should be neither too
firm nor too soft and should support your spine. Similarly, you should make sure that
your pillow doesnt throw your neck out of alignment with the rest of the spine. Having
too many pillows thrusts the head forward or sideways, while none at all can cause
the head to tip backwards.
While everyone has the odd bad night or phase of sleeping, if problems getting to
sleep or staying asleep persist, dont ignore them. Poor sleeping habits dont just
make you grumpy and sluggish, they have also been linked to a weakened immune
system, depression and even heart disease. Its enough to keep you awake at night!
