Welcome to the Department, Seasons greetings, and Best Wishes (whicharenevertoolate)foranexcitingnewyear!Wehadbeenfeelingthe need to bring out this brochure the predecessor of which has all but fossilized.Newtwigsandallbabiesareasublimesightinanycase! Our department has witnessed a number of inevitable changes. A number of faculty members have retired after long years of contribution to the education and research here. Some we are fortunate to retain. And we areperhapsequally,ifnotmore,fortunateingettingoutstandingnewfaculty members on board so that the eternal cycle of academic life goes on with renewedenergy. The department has introduced several new undergraduate and graduate courses, admitted a number of research students, received substantial research and infrastructure grants, brought in new areas of researchactivitytogethermakingitavibrantandcohesiveentity. Programmes
The Department offers a two year M. Tech. Program with an intake capacity of 37 studentsandintegratedmasters(dualdegree)programwithanintakecapacityof40 students. At present, there are about 60 research scholars (full time + part time) enrolledfortheirPh.D.attheDepartmentofChemicalEngineering. M. Tech. students need to complete 60 credits (Core subjects: 40 credits, Program electives:14credits,OpenCourses:6credits).Theintegratedmasters(dualdegree) students need to complete 48 credits (in addition to their undergraduate credit requirement of 170 credits). Further details of 2 year M. Tech. and integrated Masters(dualdegree)programsandcoursesofferedareenclosed.Besidesthecore chemical engineering subjects, the Department offers several elective courses for postgraduate students to cater their research interests and to train them in emerging areas of chemical engineering (e.g. energy, environment, fuel cells, CFD, membrane separations, petroleum refinery engineering, separation processes, bio separations, polymer science and engineering, interfacial science and engineering, multiphase flows, etc). The department lays a strong emphasis on their research projectsthatbegininthesecondsemesterandcontinuetillthefourthsemester(22 credits).Theyareprovidedwithalltheresearchfacilitiesavailableatthedepartment. As a result, several M. Tech. students have made good contributions in terms internationalpublicationsandparticipationinnationalconferences. All the Ph.D. students have to complete and qualify certain number of courses (depending on their past degree) prescribed by the department and qualify their comprehensive examination (both written and oral examination) before their candidature for Ph.D. program is confirmed. They have been provided all research facilities available at the department (and also outside the department) to cater to their research needs. Several Ph.D. students are provided partial support for their participation in national and international conferences. In addition, many Ph.D. students spend short and long research stays at universities outside India through several ongoing international students exchange programs/collaborative research projectsattheinstituteanddepartment.
