DETAILED LESSON PLAN Title: Oceanic Wheel of Fortune Age/Grade: 7-8 years old/2nd grade Purpose: I want the children to be able to learn vocabulary about the ocean in a fun and memorable way. The students will be able to play the wheel of fortune to learn new vocabulary. PASS or other applicable objectives: Language Arts (Grade 2): Standard 3: Vocabulary The student will develop and expand knowledge of words and word meanings to increase vocabulary. 1. Words in Context - Expand vocabulary in language and writing by reading and listening to a variety of text and literature. Detailed Procedures: Engage and Connect: The children will engage in the game we will play. The students may have seen their parents or grandparents watching wheel of fortune before and know how it works but for those who dont I can explain. Also the children will be learning about oceans in the classroom and I will incorporate the vocabulary into the game for students to connect the vocabulary to definitions of the vocab. Model, involve, guide, and question: I will explain the game for the children in a way they will understand. The students will then be involved because they will write the word they want their peers to guess and then write the question that will be used for the word. I will guide the children in the proper execution of the game. Also to write questions that other students will be able to answer. I will question the students to see if this game has helped them to learn new oceanic vocabulary. Summarize, check for understanding, and connect to other lessons and future learning or activities: How will you ensure they understand the skill or strategy? How will you bring a conclusion to the lesson or activity and connect it to what will come next? Have the students who understand the concepts of the game show the rest of the students the proper way to play wheel of fortune. I will ask them to go home and form their own questions with more ocean related vocabulary. We can come back the next day and play another round, after that we will move onto a different approach to learning about ocean life. Materials: I will need a dial for the game, 30 index cards, 30 markers, score board (if we keep score) Child assessment: I will ask them questions about the vocabulary they learned. I will have the students write sentences including the word that proves their understanding of the words. I will observe the process of the children playing the game. I will take the cards to later examine the childrens ability to write questions about vocabulary. Modifications/Accommodations (if applicable): I can have partners for students who are unable to write or are shy towards public speaking.
