BOOK CORNER
In my class we focus on the importance of reading for pleasure. Reading is an enjoyable activity that few regularly have time to accomplish. With this in mind, I try to encourage my students to read by posting book ideas in the classroom wiki. This month our after-class book club will discuss, The Oxford Book of Latin American Short Stories. Editor Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria brings together fiftythree stories that span the history of Latin American literature by writers Catalina de Erauso, Ricardo Palma, Ruben Dario, Augusto Roa Bastos, Cristina Peri Rossi, along with Borges, Garcia Marquez, Fuentes, Cortazar, Vargas Llosa and many more. We will focus on one short story per book club meeting. Furthermore, we will continue the conversation on the discussion board of the classroom wiki. Any parent who is interested in joining our afternoon reading group please contact me or just drop by on Tues, Wed. or Thurs. Room 217 2:30-3:30 pm.

COMING ATTRACTIONS
At the latter part of the month, the students studies will focus on the continent of Asia. Due in part to its booming economies and population growth, it is important to learn more about this continent. Among the topics discussed will be: The Chinese Revolution, India colonization and independence, overpopulation, poverty, cultural differences, traditions and economic development.

As part of the lesson, we will discuss the regions diverse geographic characteristics. Among the topics discussed are: The Pre-Colombian Civilizations of the Inca, Maya and Aztec, Spanish colonialism, agricultural techniques, population change, varied climates, and cultural characteristics of each nation or region (e.g., Mexico, Central America, South America, Caribbean). The students will practice with interactive maps to locate all the nations and their capitols, as well as identify major landmarks and geographic characteristics (e.g., Machu Picchu, Iguazu Falls, Easter Island, Galapagos Islands, Amazon Jungle, and the Andes Mountains). Finally, during the duration of the lesson plan, students will practice, analyze, and develop key literacy, vocabulary, and phonics strategies that activate prior knowledge and promote student interest.
