When NFS is enabled, you can configure rules for host-based access to folders. Rules can be added to specify the hosts that are allowed to access folders using NFS. This page allow you to configure NFS rules to specify access for hosts. For example, *.cs.foo.com matches all hosts in the domain cs.foo.com. To export a folder to all hosts on an IP address or subnetwork simultaneously, specify an IP address and netmask pair as address/netmask where the netmask can be in dotted-decimal format, or as a contiguous mask length. Filenaming Conventions
When sharing files on a network, you must choose filenames that are compatible with all devices that will use the file. The StorCenter device shares files using the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol and stores its files on a EXT2 hard drive. You will need to use characters supported by these filesystems to successfully share your files. Any filename supported by a Windows PC should work with most platforms. Invalid filenames: Any filename containing the characters: " / \ < > ? : * | Any filename that contains extended characters such as , , , , etc. (characters typed with the the Ctrl key on the Mac). Any filename that ends with a space or period. Any filename that begins with a period. some filenames such as comX, lptX, con, nul, prn, etc. maybe reserved for use by the operating system of your client computer (where X represents a number). Although filenames may be up to 256 characters long, the file path is limited to 260 characters in some operating systems. For best results, use short filenames.

Access to Shared Folders must be granted explicitly to administrators, as with other users. user Create a secured Shared Folder for this usercheck this box if you would like to create a secured Shared Folder for this user. The created Shared Folder will have the new user's name and will give access only to that user. If you do not wish to create a secured Shared Folder for this user on the device, uncheck this checkbox. 4. Click Next to grant Shared Folder access rights for this user. 5. Set the access rights for the user to access the available Shared Folders. An administrator can modify access rights to any Shared Folder by selecting Read/Write Read/Write, Read, Read or None for that Shared Folder. Unsecured Shared Folders are not displayed in the list since access to them cannot be restricted. 6. Once you have finished setting the access rights for the user, click Apply to add the user. If the user was created successfully, a confirmation page will display. Click OK to return to the Users page or the Home page. Adding ADS Users: When you enable and configure Active Directory using the StorCenter Manager, it associates the StorCenter with the Active Directory controller, but does not automatically add all domain users to StorCenter Manager. Individual users are added once they access the StorCenter with a valid Active Directory username and password. At that time, their username will be added to the list of users and a secured Shared Folder will be created for that user. A secured Shared Folder provides each user with a private, secured area to save files. By default the public and Backups Shared Folder are Read/Write access for all users and therefore publicly accessible by all users. When Active Directory is enabled, all new users are automatically denied access to existing secure Shared Folders. Users must first access the StorCenter before an administrator can

grant them access to a Shared Folder. A user must exist in the User Accounts page of the StorCenter Manager before an administrator can grant them access to a Shared Folder. NOTE: Administrators cannot add, delete, or modify user accounts displayed in the StorCenter Manager when Active Directory is enabled. All user account management must be performed through the domain controller.

The descriptive name can be up to 64 characters and spaces are allowed. 3. To add or remove administrative privileges, check or uncheck the Administrator checkbox. NOTE: StorCenter administrators do not have access to all Shared Folders by default. Access rights to Shared Folders must be granted explicitly to administrators, as with other users. 4. To change the password for the user, choose Yes When Yes is selected, the Yes. password fields display. Type a new password for the user. For added security, the password should be between 8 and 12 characters. Spaces are not allowed. Confirm the password in the Confirm Password textbox. If the text in this field does not match the text in the Password field, an error displays. 5. Click Next to modify access privileges for the user. This is Step 2 of 2. Managing Groups
Administrators can grant individual users access rights to Shared Folders on the Iomega StorCenter device. Groups provides administrators with the added ability to create one or more groups and grant each group rights to Shared Folders on the Iomega StorCenter device. Groups can contain one or more groups and one or more users and users can belong to more than one group. When groups are defined, a user's access rights are the most rights granted to the user and all groups to which the user belongs. Access the Groups page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking Groups Groups. By default, there are no groups defined. Once an administrator defines one or more groups, the Groups functionality is dynamically available when creating, modifying, and viewing users, Shared Folders, and groups. In addition, the help is dynamically updated with the appropriate content whether groups are defined or not. To view the current list of users, click the Users link. If you are running with Active Directory enabled, as opposed to Workgroup mode, the administrator will have the ability to view Active Directory groups, add them to the Iomega StorCenter device, and change the group's Shared Folder access. However, when Active Directory is enabled, the administrator cannot create, modify, or update group or user permissions using the Iomega StorCenter Manager as these features are hidden. The administrator must adjust permissions on the Active Directory domain controller.

Erasing the StorCenter device

Erase Disks provides two options for irrecoverably deleting all data on your Iomega StorCenter device: Quick Erase and Secure Erase. The default option, Quick Erase, permanently deletes all record of existing or deleted data, users, and passwords. The Secure Erase option takes significantly longer, but provides an added security benefit by overwriting all disks with random data in addition to permanently erasing all data on the disks to prevent recovery of existing or deleted data, users, and passwords. Since this operation renders all data irrecoverable, to prevent accidental data loss you must manually delete all folders from your Iomega StorCenter device prior to performing a disk erase operation. You can use the disk erase feature only to erase the disks internal to the Iomega StorCenter device. You cannot use this feature to erase any external storage devices that may be connected. Access the Erase Disks page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking Disks >Manage Manage Disks >Erase Disks Erase Disks. 1. Setting Disk Protection

What is an Array? Changing the Data Protection What is JBOD? What is RAID 1? The StorCenter device comes preconfigured with a RAID 1 array. To enhance your experience with your StorCenter device, it is very important to become familiar with the basics of array handling.

What is an Array?
Arrays are devices that combine multiple physical disks into a single logical volume. RAID, or Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or Independent) Disks, is a method of combining multiple disks for data redundancy in case of a disk failure. This section describes each of the different types of arrays supported by your StorCenter device.

CAUTION! Some RAID configurations add a level of redundancy for your data; however, RAID should not be your only means of backup.

top of page

Changing the Data Protection

Before you can switch data protection schemes, you must delete all data from the device by removing all Shared Folders. If you are unfamiliar with RAID protection, it is recommended that you do not adjust this setting. 1. Navigate to the Settings tab click Disks and then the Manage Disks link. Click Data tab, Disks, Protection. Protection 2. Choose one of the following settings (See descriptions below): Mirror based data protection (RAID 1) Default Without data protection (JBOD) 3. Click OK to change the data protection. A confirmation page displays. 4. Check the confirmation checkbox and click Apply to change the data protection. Data protection will begin to rebuild and the Dashboard will display the current status.

top of page

What is a Spanned Volume?

JBOD, also known as spanning, combines multiple hard drives into a single large volume. Data is not written in parallel to multiple disks. Data is written to a single disk until it is full and then written to the next disk in the set. Spanning does not provide any data redundancy. Spanning requires two or more hard drives.

top of page

What is RAID 1?
RAID 1 mirrors or duplicates the contents of one drive on another equally-sized drive. Mirroring provides optimal data integrity and immediate access to your data if one drive fails. The StorCenter device only supports two-drive RAID 1 configurations. The RAID capacity is half the physical capacity of the two drives.

Using the Media Server

The Iomega StorCenter device has a built-in media server that, when enabled, can scan for media content in specific Shared Folder directories. Access the Media Server page by navigating to the Settings tab and clicking Server. Media Services > Media Server The Media Server supports playback of videos, music and pictures from any UPnP AV (Universal Plug and Play Audio Visual) network media players, such as iTunes , Windows Media Player , or Xbox 360 . The Iomega StorCenter device's built-in media server scans for files in the Media Folder directory specified on the Media Server page and any Public Media directory created directly below any user's shared folder. Any media content contained in these specific directories will be scanned by the Iomega StorCenter media server and accessible to any user on your network with a media player. Media content placed in the Public Media subfolder of a secured Shared Folder can be seen by all users on your network, even if they have not been granted access to the Shared Folder. Do not put content in this directory unless you are comfortable sharing it with

other users. Setting a Media Folder Once the media server is enabled, by default, the Media Folder is set as the Media directory in the public Shared Folder. To change the Media Folder, click Shared Folders to view a list of Shared Folders. Scanning for media content The Media Server automatically scans for media content on a regular basis. However, you can click Scan now at any time to force the media server to perform an immediate scan for media content. This is especially useful after you have changed the Media Folder or after you copy a large amount of media content to your Iomega StorCenter device. Using your Iomega StorCenter device as a media server You can move all of your media files from your individual home computers to your Iomega StorCenter device and have the ability to access all of your media content from any media networked device. The procedures shown below are intended as examples. Your media player or version may operate slightly differently than documented here. It is recommended that you refer to your media player documentation on how to add a network device. Setting up iTunes This example assumes that the Media Folder is set to the default and that the Shared Folders are connected to the computer in use. 1. Locate the source directory of your iTunes media content. 2. Drag, or copy, your existing media content to the Music Pictures or Videos Music, Pictures, subfolders of the Media folder located in the Public Shared Folder. 3. When you open the iTunes Library your Media folder will automatically display. Setting up Xbox 360 This example assumes that the Media Folder is set to the default and that the Shared Folders are connected to the computer in use. 1. Connect your Xbox 360 to your TV and connect your Xbox to the same local network as your Iomega StorCenter device. 2. Navigate to the Media tab in Xbox 360 and select Music Pictures or Videos Music, Pictures, Videos. 3. Select Computer from the options menu.

Port Forwarding
Most home routers or gateways use a NAT firewall to protect your home network from the Internet. NAT or Network Address Translation works by hiding your computer's IP address from internet devices and replacing it with the gateway IP address. It will then forward internet traffic to the proper computer. To further protect your home network, the NAT firewall disallows unrequested traffic from the internet. Some applications, such as Torrents and Remote Access, require unrequested inbound connections. To use these features with your StorCenter device, you will need to configure your router to allow inbound connections for these applications. This is known as Port Forwarding.

Configuring Port Forwarding

The Iomega StorCenter will attempt to automatically configure your router to port forward for remote access, once that feature is enabled. If the StorCenter is unsuccessful or if you need to use other features such as torrent download or FTP, you will need to manually configure your router. NOTE: Before port forwarding, you will want to change your StorCenter to a static IP address. The port forwarding steps will vary depending on your router. You will need to consult the user's manual that came with your router for more information. In most cases you should look for a section on port forwarding OR application access. Although, Iomega cannot provide you with exact steps for your router, we can provide some information on settings fields commonly found on Port Forwarding screens. (Not all fields are found on all devices. Fields may appear in a different order on your router.) Linksys Users: In addition to Port forwarding you will need to deselect Block Anonymous Internet Requests on the Firewall settings page.

For step by step instructions on some router models, see Port ForwardingRouter Specific Instructions. * Generally the External and Internal port settings will match; however, since a port can only be forwarded to one device you may need to change the external port to avoid a forwarding conflict. For example, if your router has external (web) configuration enabled it may already be using port 443. You may need to set the external port to 8080, etc. You can find your StorCenter device's IP address on the Settings Network Services Network Settings screen. These must match the port range you set in the Torrent Downloads screen under the Settings tab. Some Internet Service Providers block ports 6881-6999.

Configuring Port Forwarding on Double NAT Networks

If you have more than one router, make sure that the primary router (usually the one connected to or acting as the DSL/Cable modem) is the only one with DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and NAT (Network Address Translation) enabled. The second or cascaded router should be changed to bridging mode. Make sure the second router connects to the primary router using a standard port rather than the port labeled uplink or Internet. This will basically turn your secondary router into a switch; however, you can still enable its Wireless Access Point (if equipped). See the documentation that came with your router for configuration information and settings. If for some reason the network configuration cannot be changed and your setup requires the double NAT, you must perform the port forwarding steps twice. On the primary router, port forward to the cascaded router's external IP address. On the Cascaded router, port forward to the StorCenter's IP address. Use the table above for port settings.

Troubleshooting
If you encounter a problem while connecting or using your StorCenter device, check the topics listed below for possible solutions. Click on any of the following topics to expand or close the troubleshooting information. Drive does not power on Make sure you are using the power cable that came with your drive. Ensure that it is correctly connected. 1. Verify that the power cable is connected to the drive. 2. Verify that the power cable is plugged into a working power outlet. Make sure the status light is on. If it is not, press and release the power button. When the status light is blue, the drive is ready to use. For more information, see Initial Setup.

top of page

Drive is not recognized on your system Make sure the drive is powered on. See Connecting the StorCenter device. Check all connections (power and network). Make sure you are using a functional Ethernet cable. We suggest using the Ethernet cable that shipped with your drive. Verify that the link LED on the back of the drive is on. Make sure the Ethernet cable is connected to a 10/100/1000Base-T switch, hub, or router or directly to your computer. For best results, connect the StorCenter device to the same router as your computer. Make sure your network only has one device acting as a DHCP server. If your network has multiple routers, you may have multiple devices running DHCP. See the documentation that came with your DHCP device to reconfigure your network.

Performance seems slow In some cases the Write Caching feature may slow the performance of the StorCenter device. To disable, set Disk Write Caching to Always disabled (Disks Manage DisksManage Disks DisksWrite Caching). Disks Write Caching Some models of the StorCenter device will verify its drives once a month. Although the status light does not show disk activity during this process, the drive performance will be low. You cannot schedule, quit, or delay the verification. To find out if your StorCenter drive is performing a disk verification, see the Dashboard in the StorCenter Storage Manager software. The drive status will display as Verifying... followed by the percentage complete.

How do I change the name of my StorCenter Network Hard Drive? Always use StorCenter Manager to change the drive's name. Changing the name on your host computer does not change the name on the network. You can change the device name using the StorCenter Manager software. When you have logged into the device, click on device under the Settings tab. This will open the initial configuration wizard.

top of page

I changed the Network Name of the drive in Device Settings and I can no longer access it on my network Your computer needs to update its list of devices on the network. There are several possible solutions: Wait 5 - 15 minutes until your computer automatically updates its list. Restart your computer. The restart should force your computer to update its list. On large corporate networks this may not always work. You may still be able to access the drive using the IP Address (e.g.: \\192.168.3.7 ) until your computer automatically updates its list. See How do I find the device's IP address?
