Specific Fuel Consumption Recorder is an important factor to depict the efficiency of the locomotive in the load box. A measure of this would guide the diesel sheds and the POH workshops to save a considerable amount of fuel. Because, an improvement of a few percent in the ef ficiency would lead to a substantial saving in the fuel bill . With this realization the Computerised SFC Recorder has been designed and developed to know and record the various values of Specific Fuel Consumption, Traction Generator Voltage and Current and the Engine shaft horse power very accurately by applying the correction factors pertaining to temperature, altitude and the auxiliary load and Fuel oil density those are relevant to the various locomotives at the load box. The printout is recorded as an important document so as to refer it every time, when the load box is done, for computing the efficiency of that particular locomotive.

1. DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE EQUIPMENT:


The Computerised SFC Recorder is housed in two panels. One panel constitutes the main computer, the display panel, key -board and the printer while the other panel constitutes its mechanical counterparts like the fuel pump, fuel pump motor, fuel tank and the associated sensor . The computer panel can be kept inside the load box, while its mechanical panel can be kept outside the load box (to avoid any spillage of oil).

When the locomotive is connected to this equipment, the computer automatically controls the fuel oil leve l in our fuel tank (the SFC fuel tank and not the loco fuel tank), to prevent the locomotive from starving for its fuel. If an SFC reading is desired, the SFC cycle is initiated just at the press of the key marked SFC . Once the SFC cycle is initiated, the computer automatically measures the fuel consumption of the locomotive along with the Traction Generator Voltage and Current . It computes the SFC after getting the auxiliary horse power and temperature corrections through the key-board. Altitude correction, density correction and the Traction Generator efficiency are all incorporated during the manufacturing stage itself, according to the requirements of each and every Railway.

After computing the SFC, the results are displayed on the front panel. A hard copy of the results, viz., Date, Locomotive No., Notch, Traction Generator Voltage, Traction Generator Current, Corrected Horse Power, Specific Fuel Consumption, SFC Time, Traction Generator Efficiency and Fuel Consumption are obtained from the printer in the form of a print out. To aid easier working with this equipment even by non -technical persons, default settings and software by -passes have been provided.

2. IMPORTANT FEATURES: Continuous display of fuel consumption, at each and every notch Isolated sensing and display of Traction Generator Voltage and Traction Generator current throughout the working of the equipment (even when SFC is not taken). Status indications of the SFC cycle, Overweight alarm (audio-visual), Fuel Pump Status and Time measuring Period, SFC Result are all displayed on the Front Panel. Entry of the Locomotive Number, Date, notch, Temperature and Auxillary horsepower (with default settings) and selection of Traction Generator Efficiency through the key-board. A seperate Fuel tank, Fuel pump and motor which are automatically controlled by the computer. Seperate provisions for Relief valve outlet and Regulating valve outlet to be connected to this equipment for greater accuracy. Continuous averaging of the Traction Generator Voltage an d Current by the computer during the full SFC cycle for improved accuracy. This is a must for Water load box testing because, as the water evaporates(during the loading), the TG current will be continuously varying during the SFC time. A print-out of all the computed results to have a permanent record about the fuel consumption parameters, once the particular locomotive leaves the shed.
