Church History I Mondays 7-9PM Aug 20 Oct 8 Purpose: o Church history is the heart of His story, Gods kingdom

om work on earth. This course seeks to explore the development of the Christian church from its beginning up to the Reformation. It covers key people and events that God used throughout history to bolster His church and also those negative influences that infected her. The goal of this course is to use the lessons from church history to advance the kingdom of God through life and ministry. Grading Scale o All Covenant Institute courses operate on a ten-point scale. o The grade for Church History I will be based on the following: Reading of Getting to Know the Church Fathers: An Evangelical Introduction by Bryan M. Litfin (Due Oct 8th) 50% Historical Biography (Due Oct 8th) 25% Primary Source Reading (Due Oct 8th) 20% Participation 5% Class Auditing o Those desirous to attend and are not working toward the certificate in religious studies need not complete any of the above assignments except participate in class discussions. Certificate in Religious Studies o Those desirous of earning the certificate in religious studies must complete all of the above assignments in order to receive credit for this course. o A 2.00 GPA must be earned in order for the course to count toward the certificate. Transcripts and Other Records o All Transcripts and attendance records will be kept and maintained by Covenant Institute

Garner III, MDiv o joegarner3@gmail.com o facebook.com/jgarneriii Assignment Descriptions o Reading of Getting to Know the Church Fathers: An Evangelical Introduction by Bryan M. Litfin The student will submit a signed paper on the final day of class (Oct 8th) indicating the percentage of the book that has been read. o Historical Biography The student will write a 5 8 page paper giving a concise biography of a historical figure of church history from the birth of the church up to (but not including) the Reformation. The subject of the biography must be approved by the instructor no later than September 10th This paper will be double-spaced and written in 12 point Times New Roman Font All source materials including websites must be cited and included in a bibliography at the end of the paper. o Primary Source Reading The student must read at least one primary source work(s) from the period of Church History from the birth of the Church up to (but not including) the Reformation. This primary source material must consist of at least 30 pages of reading. See the website www.ccel.org for free primary source readings throughout Church History. A list of suggested readings will be available on the first day of class and from the instructor at any future point. The student will submit a signed paper on the final day of class (Oct 8th) indicating the author and work(s) read. o Participation Students are expected to not only attend but also participate in class lectures and discussions
