Children do not come to their English lessons like blank sheet of papers. They already have views about attitude toward learning English, as the two quotes to ten years old Spanish children show these attitude student are formed by the social environment in which they grow up and by the people around them .it is important to be aware of these attitudes as they can influences pupils desire and motivation to learn and ultimately their success in learning English. In this chapter will consider; Pupils attitudes to learning English and what influences them Finding out about pupils attitude Ways of developing positive attitudes towards English Teachers attitudes to their own language Pupils attitudes to learning English and what influences them Task 1 Do you like to learning English? It is difficult to know exactly what has influenced pupils attitudes but we could guess from the comments that pupils are influenced by; Teaching method (it is difficult, I feel left behind), Seeing a need for English outside school (work in other countries, useful leader on, understand game instruction, world language), Personal preferences interest in language (it is a beautiful language). Pupils attitudes seem to change as they get older, perhaps in response to internal development and different experiences in their environment. It is interesting to consider differences in attitudes between age groups and also differences in the factor which influence their attitudes.

Task 2 Differences in attitudes between age group What factors are likely to influence the attitudes of younger children aged six to ten?

Younger children tend to be influenced by their feelings for their teacher, the general learning atmosphere in the classroom the method used and by their parents opinion. Two of the most important reasons for pupils liking English appear to be teacher and teaching method. However parental and peer influences are important and need to be considered in trying to develop positive attitudes. Parental influences may be more important in younger children, while peer influences may become more important as children approach their teens. There do seem to be differences in attitudes to learning English between age groups younger children tend to be more enthusiastic, while older children (11-12 upwards) often become less interested, embarrassed by having to learn a language or even hostile because they dont want to seem foolish in front of their friends. Attitudes do not remind fixed and can be positively or negatively by influences or pupils from outside school. Finding out about pupils attitude Task 3 What do teachers think influences pupils attitudes? Teachers and pupils both mention the teacher method and focus on games and communication as being information. They also both refer to the influences of youth culture. One child say its cool to learn English Teachers also point out the children have no real need for the language they have to learn it because it is on the curriculum. The older pupils quoted earlier, however, all see need for English. Two Teachers indicate how attitudes change as pupils move up the school and more effort is demanded. Think about why attitudes seem to chance as pupils get older. It is because teaching methods get less interesting, more formal, and more exam-oriented? Or is it because pupils are changing emotionally, physically, and cognitively, and are becoming more influenced by youth culture and peer opinion, which are sometimes anti-school. It is important to find out what our pupils attitudes are from time to time. We can assume that we know what they are. Children are every bit as complex emotionally as adults, and are equally effected by their experiences with regard to their language learning.
