PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee WS/14 on the National Plumbing and Drainage Code.
This Standard is the result of a consensus among representatives on the Joint Committee
to produce it as an Australian Standard.
This Standard sets out objectives for sanitary plumbing and drainage in its functional and
performance requirements.
Reference to AS/NZS 3500.2.2, National Plumbing and Drainage, Part 2.2: Sanitary
plumbing and drainage — Acceptable solutions sets out a means of achieving minimum
deemed-to-satisfy requirements for the objectives and performance requirements of this
Standard.

It is recognized that the content of this part Standard would usually be the responsibility
of a regulatory body. Nevertheless, owing to the reforms taking place in the industry at
present, no national body has yet been identified to take up such responsibilities.
Therefore, for the purpose of this edition the document is published as part of the
AS 3500 series. If in the future a national regulatory administration is identified, the
Standard will be modified accordingly.
The performance requirements of this Standard have been published excluding a
‘durability’ clause. This course of action was found necessary owing to a division existing
within the committee members responsible for the document. It is possible that in the
future durability requirements could become part of this document by means of an
amendment or a full revision of the Standard.
