[ANSI/IEEE title: IEEE Standard for Software Quality Assurance
Plans]
This Australian Standard was prepared by Committee QR/3, Software Quality
Assurance. It was approved on behalf of the Council of Standards Australia on
22 March 1994 and published on 16 May 1994.
Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australi an Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this informati on is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives detail s of new publications, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee QR/3
on Software Quality Assurance as an Australian Standard
The Standard is identical with, and has been reproduced from ANSI/IEEE 730.1 — 1989, IEEE Standard
for Software Quality Assurance Plans. It provides uniform requirements for the preparation of Software
Quality Assurance Plans (SQAPs).
Under the terms of the Active Corporation Agreement, this Standard is the result of a consensus among
Australian and New Zealand representatives on the Joint Committee to produce this document as an
Australian Standard.
The objective of this Standard is to provide guidance to software developers on the preparation and
content of Software Quality Assurance Plans (SQAPs) and to provide a basis for a degree of uniformity
in development and presentation, where appropriate. In deciding to make the internationally-recognized
ANSI/IEEE Standard available in Australia, the Committee noted that certain aspects of the Standard,
such as terms and definitions, are not completely consistent with local usage and practice. As a result

the Standard is intended for guidance or voluntary adoption, not for mandatory or rigid application.
For the purpose of this Australian Standard, the IEEE text should be modified by replacing references
