PREFACE
This Australian Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committees on Customer
Metering and Services Interfaces, and Electricity Metering Equipment to supersede
AS 4140(Int) —1993.
The objective of this Standard is to collate terms used in AS 4141, Customer/utility
information exchange (published in Parts), in AS 1284, Electricity Metering (published in
Parts) and generally in the electricity, gas, and water supply industries.
In the drafting of this edition, reference was made to ongoing work in IEC/TC 13 − WG 14,

reading, tariff and load control. That work, when completed, may be included in a future
edition of this Standard.
This edition incorporates editorial improvements and includes additional terms: cumulative

maximum demand, tariff parameters, sublayer, LLC and MAC sublayers, collapsed
architecture, ripple control. It recognizes that there is as yet no world standard convention for
the unqualified terms import metering and export metering; accordingly it introduces the terms
customer import metering (see 3.2) and customer export metering (see 3.3). A listing of
acronyms and abbreviations is provided.
