A railway station serves as the main entry point for Malgudi. It is here that you find Raju, the guide who will help you explore the village. On your way through Lawley's extension, you'll visit AnandaBhavan, where you can have a sip of coffee before continuing the journey. Some of the remarkable characters you'll meet during your visit are the town gossip, the financial expert, the man who owns Truth Press, the English teacher, and many others. The story begins with Swami, who was born and brought up in Malgudi, attending his monotonous schooling in Albert Mission School. What is the Subjects

Swami and Friends is the story of a 10-year-old boy, growing up during this particular time, his innocence, wonder, mischief and growing pains. He is a student at Albert Mission School, a school established by the British which gives importance to Christianity, English literature and education. His life is dramatically changed when Rajam - a symbol of colonial super power - joins the school and he and Rajam become friends. The central theme of the novel is growing up of young Swami. He is a spontaneous, impulsive, mischievous and yet a very innocent child. His character is a child in the fullest sense of the world. Through Swami's eyes the reader gets to peak in to the pre-independence days in South India. The life portrayed in the novel is accurate in its description of the colonial days - the uprisings, the rebellions, the contempt and the reverence the natives had for their subjugator, together with varied elements that have become one, such as cricket and education. Other themes of the novel is about the reality of childrens world. Every story based on friendship tells the fact that true friends are gifts of God. One should not let small disputes and misunderstandings strain friendships. They have strong imaginations and vivid sensations. The children have a tendency to exaggerate and it requires great psychological insight and understanding to paint the world from a childs point of view.

What is the Purpose?

Swami and Friends by R.K. Narayan is the story of a ten-year-old boy growing up in Malgudi, India during the independence movement of the 1930s. The story is told through the eyes of Swami, which is a good way to see how the independence movement has had an effect on people. Swami lives with his grandma and parents, so these changes are made more evident when contrasted to their opinions. There is also a lot of history in the book because it takes place in the thirties. The way different characters act towards the riots and strikes show the different view towards independence. Because the book shows the opinions of people of all ages, the reader is able to see the cultural changes across time and what, historically, lead to those changes. Swami and Friends is about Swami and his friends going to school, having a cricket team, and generally getting up to no good. It is basically a story about everyday life, with small plot twists throughout the book. Narayan chose to keep the plot of the book very basic because he wanted to show the effect independence had on all young boys, not just Swami. He wanted people to be able to relate to the story, and the way to do that is keeping the plot true to everyday life. The book is very simply written; Narayan does not use big words, but instead keeps his language basic and lets the story engage the reader purely based on the plot. Narayans writing style is similar to that of Chinua Achebes Things Fall Apart. Both authors concentrate more on the plot then on the specific language used to describe it. The story itself is powerful enough; its narration does not need to be as descriptive. The books are also slightly similar in content because at the most basic level they are both about how European Imperialism affects villages. Achebe and Narayan may have chosen these styles because they felt it was the story of villagers, so keeping the writing simple would reflect the plot, adding depth to the overall story.

Swami and Friends is semi-autobiographical, so there are many parallels that can be drawn between Narayan and Swami. Swami and Friends was Narayans first published book and he continued on the series with two more books that reflect his life similarly. I would recommend Swami and Friends because it is told from a ten-year-olds viewpoint, so you get a new perspective that is normally overlooked. Not only do you get new cultural and historic information, but also the plot is also engaging and easy to follow.

WHAT IS THE OCCASION?

The occasion in this novel is a town named Malguldi. This town is the main town in this novel. Many events had happened here. Swami house, school, his friend house also lives in this town. This town also be a meaningful town because its see the meaning of friendship between Swami and his all his friends. Most of R. K. Narayanan work including Swami and Friends is set in the fictional town of Malguldi. This novel also story during colonial era in Malguldi 1930.They are under British. So their nasionalism have rises their spirit to avoid the bad history to happen again. It can be seen when they did not use the British goods. There are many demonstrations had happened in the town because the spirit of the Indians that want their country are out of the colonial era.
