Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australi an Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new edit ions as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australi an Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editi ons
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This standard was issued in draft form for public review as Doc. 1154.

PREFACE

This Australian standard, prepared by the SAA Committee on Metrology, is one of a

series for metrological equipment used in engineering industries for precision
measurement. It provides for angle plates for use with moderate loads and basically
intended for inspection purposes. Angle plates for workshop use are specified in
AS B167 (endorsement of BS 3080: 1959 with Australian amendment).
This standard has been developed on the basis of BS 3645:1963 but differs from that
standard in a number of respects, the main differences being as follows:
(i) The material clauses have been altered considerably, especially with regard to cast
iron angle plates.
(ii) The designation of angle plates has been altered to make it uniform with the

designation of similar metrological equipment in other Australian standards.

(iii) The definition of “parallelism tolerance” is altered.

Requirements are specified for material, finish and accuracy, and recommended
standard sizes are given.

2 TERMS AND DEFINITIONS.

2.1 Working Faces. The term ‘working faces’ applies to the exterior faces, end
faces and longitudinal edges (see Fig. 1).
2.2 Flatness Tolerance — the maximum permissible distance between two
imaginary parallel planes within which the surface under consideration can just be
enclosed.
2.3 Squareness Tolerance — the maximum permissible distance separating two
imaginary parallel planes, which just enclose one of the surfaces under consideration
and which are perpendicular to the other surface, taken as the datum (see Fig. 2).
NO TE: That one of the mutually perpendicular surf aces which constit utes the longer leg, is to be
chosen as the datum.
2.4 Parallelism Tolerance between Two Surfaces — the maximum permissible
distance separating two imaginary planes within which the surface under consideration
can just be enclosed and which are parallel to the other surface, taken as the datum.

3 DESIGNATING SIZE. The designating sizes of an angle plate are breadth, height
and length given in the order indicated, i.e. B × H × L (see Fig. 1 and Table 2).

4 RECOMMENDED DIMENSIONS. Recommended general dimensions for

standard precision angle plates are given in Table 1. Plates of other sizes should be
ordered only when it is not practicable to adopt one of the standard sizes.
When plates of intermediate sizes are supplied they should be made to the same
tolerances as those tabulated for the next smaller standard size.
