HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF T-SHIRTS

T-shirts are durable, versatile garments with mass appeal that may be worn as outerwear or underwear. Since their creation in 1920, T-shirts have evolved into a twobillion dollar market. T-shirts are available in a variety of colors, patterns, and styles, such as the standard crew neck and V-neck, as well as tank tops and scoop necks.Tshirts are also popular garments on which to display one's interests, tastes, and affiliations using customized screen prints or heat transfers. T shirts history begins with the industrial revolution in England and the rise of international trade. After the industrial revolution mass production became a possibility and T shirt history grew exponentially. Although the cotton for the bulk manufacture of T shirts came orginally from the America, it was in Europe that the T shirt history developed first. In 1931, White cotton, crewneck T-shirts became regulation underwear for the U.S. Navy. Two decades later, at the University of Southern California, football players donned similar shirts to prevent chafing from heavy shoulder pads. The tees became so fashionable that students started pilfering them for casual wear. Hollywood rebel Marlon Brando exuded animal magnetism in A Streetcar Named Desire [1] when he wore a thin, white T-shirt in 1951.

Teens loved the look, and by years end, T-shirt sales totalled $180 million.

Since then, the t-shirt designs have been taken by storm, be it the tie and die mania, or the I Ny t-shirts, or the Frankie says relax T-shirts.

DESCRIPTION OF A T-SHIRT MANUFACTURING UNIT

We visited a T-shirt manufacturing factory located in Gurgaon, called KC Knits, where we learnt the various processes involved in making a T-shirt. Here is a brief description of the same. Raw Materials : The majority of T-shirts are made of 100% cotton, polyester, or a cotton/polyester blend. Stretchable T-shirts are made of knit fabrics, especially jerseys, rib knits, and interlock rib knits, which consist of two ribbed fabrics that are joined together. The Manufacturing Process : Styling: The T-shirt style is designed and the dimensions are transferred to patterns. Cutting: The T-shirt sections are cut to the dimensions of the patterns. The pieces consist of a tubed body, or separate front and back sections, sleeves, perhaps pockets, and trim. Assembling the front and back : For fabric that is not tubed, the separate pieces for the front and back sections must be stitched together at the sides. Assembling the sleeves : The hems of sleeves are generally finished before they are fitted into the garment, since it is easier to hem the fabric while it is flat. Stitching the hem : The garment hem is commonly sewn with an overedge stitch, resulting in a flexible hem. The tension of the stitch should be loose enough to allow stretching the garment without tearing the fabric. Attaching the neckband : For crew neck shirts, the neck edge should be slightly shorter in circumference than the outer edge where it is attached to the garment. Thus, the neckband must be stretched just the right amount to prevent bulging Label setting : One or more labels are usually attached at the back of the neckline. Labels provide information about the manufacturer, size, fabric content, and washing instructions.
