Habitat for Humanity heads to Moorestown
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Sitting behind a set of railroad
tracks, an overgrown, uneven
plot of land will soon be used to
support a home.
The goal is to get the building
done by the end of the calendar
year, Habitat for Humanity
Burlington County executive di-
rector Todd Ermer said.
The organization held its
groundbreaking ceremony at 45
E. 3rd Street on Sunday, July 29,
making it the first Habitat for
Humanity home in Moorestown.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-
profit organization with the pur-
pose of providing low- to moder-
ate-income people with afford-
able homes. Specifically, the New
Jersey Affiliate of Habitat for
Humanity has served the
Burlington County community
since 1987.
Kayla and James Lyons, who
currently reside in Maple Shade,
are the lucky siblings who are
getting a chance to be homeown-
ers.
According to Ermer, every
family that applies for the Afford-
able Homeowners Program
needs to meet certain criteria.
Each family, or individual, must
currently live in substandard
housing that is unaffordable and
overcrowded or unsafe. The fam-
ily must also fall within specific

of the late Congressman John
Adler and candidate for N.J.

Youth soccer clinic
is being offered
A Youth Soccer Clinic will be
conducted this fall for boys and
girls entering grades K through 8.
Paul Wimbleton, who has 22 years
as a professional soccer player in
the International League and 15
years of youth coaching experi-
ence, will conduct all clinics.
Grades kindergarten and first -
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Grades second through eighth -
4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
The clinics, designed to be a
learning experience in a non-
competitive atmosphere, will be
held on Tuesday evenings Sept. 11
through Oct. 30 at Jeff Young
Park, 109 New Albany Road.
Players should bring shin
guards (mandatory) and sneakers
or cleats.
The cost for the program is $50,
and is in addition to the Saturday
Soccer Leagues that begin on
Sept. 22.
Registration is on a space avail-
able basis, depending on the num-
ber of volunteer coaches taking
part in the program, with the
BRIEFS
please see BRIEFS, page 4
income guidelines according to
family size.
The application process usual-
ly takes about three months. The
applicant must be willing to
spend 250 hours per family mem-
ber in sweat equity, and gather
the closing costs before building
the home, according to the Habi-
tat for Humanity Burlington web-
site.
The brother and sister duo
were smiling from ear to ear as
they drove a shovel into the soil
of their newly acquired property.
We just found out that we got
the property on Tuesday, Lyons
said.
Lyons still couldnt believe the
opportunity they were given.
They never thought it was possi-
ble and called the ceremony and
news surreal.
One important step for the pro-
gram was not only finding the
family for the home, but where to
build it and how the Lyons will
pay for it.
The program purchased the
land from 1st Colonial National
Bank at an inexpensive price
and is offering the siblings a 0
percent interest rate on their
mortgage. The house is also
being sold to the Lyons below
market value.
Ermer explained that all fami-
lies who are a part of the pro-
gram pay off the loan, at a 0 per-
cent interest rate, to Habitat for
Humanity Burlington County.
Habitat for Humanity acts as the
middle man, to ensure that the
family is able to sustain an af-
fordable lifestyle.
Thrivent Financial played a
big role in this project, providing
$100,000 toward the build.
Thrivent Financial Associate,
Dennis Lojek, heard about the
siblings but the ceremony was
the first time he actually met
them. He is looking forward to
helping out as much as he can
and stands by the programs pur-
pose.
This is a hand-up, not a hand-
down, said Lojek. People think
we give them the house [but] they
actually work on the house and
pay for it.
Local volunteers, friends and
family members are the expand-
ing backbone for this build.
Ermer said that they dont have a
lot of recruitment efforts, but the
people from the community
know about the program and
come out to help.
With local support, the Lyons
new home is expected to be com-
pleted by the end of this year.
Without our many contribu-
tors, we would not be able to sus-
tain, Ermer said.

tat for Humanity Burlington

N
ew Jersey does solar power.
Does it well. Does it too well,
as it turns out.
According to the governors office,
the state installed more solar capacity
in the first quarter of 2012 than any
other state and led the nation in solar
installations on commercial and indus-
trial properties in 2011.
Now, thats a source of pride. Being a
national leader in something other
than reality television shows is a good
thing.
But, as it turns out, you can have too
much of a good thing.
The supply of solar power has now
surpassed the demand, bringing the
market crashing down. And when the
market crashes, solar projects in the
construction phase can stop. Jobs can
be lost. The momentum of the solar in-
dustry can come to a halt.
The measure signed by Gov.
Christie, which had bipartisan sup-
port, aims to boost the market by re-
quiring power companies to purchase
more solar power. In other words, the
state is trying to increase the demand,
hoping that, eventually, it catches up to
the supply, thereby giving those in the
business of building solar projects a
reason to keep doing what theyre
doing.
We think the bill certainly cant
hurt, given the current market situa-
tion, but we also agree with experts
who think more might need to be done.
In a statement, the Mid-Atlantic
Solar Energy Industries Association
points out that the measure doesnt do
enough to prevent a recurrence of the
over-supply situation. It proposes con-
trolling the pace of solar project pro-
duction.
It might be a bit premature to take
that step, but, as the state has seen, this
is a market that, left to its own, can run
itself into the ground fairly quickly.
Give the new measure time to work.
See if the demand can catch up to the
supply. But be ready to step in if it be-
comes clear that more steps are needed
to avoid another crash.
in our opinion
Solar solution
Recent action will help the market, at least in the short term
A super-solar state
New Jersey is a national leader when it
comes to producing solar power. Oddly,
that is now a bad thing. Supply exceeds
demand, and the market has crashed.
A measure signed last month will help
to correct that.
Wesley Bishop South project on hold
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
During a special meeting, the council
discussed the future of the Wesley Bishop
South project, Monday July 23. After a
unanimous vote, the council rescinded the
bidding for the project and will hold off on
the improvements until next year.
Previously, the council approved the use
of $1.5 million from the Open Space, Recre-
ation, Farmland, and Historic Preserva-
tion Trust Fund for the construction of a
turf field, parking lot improvements and
drainage improvements to Wesley Bishop
Park North.
An estimated $400,000 was set for the
Wesley Bishop South project to improve
the parking lot, irrigation system and the
recreational field.
Mayor John Button mentioned that the
discussion between engineers and town
manager Scott Carew, along with requests
from various sports groups, prompted the
decision to delay the project until next
year.
The sports groups felt that if we moved
forward now, it would negatively impact
their season, said Button. They asked
that we delay the project.
If the town decides to dip directly into
the Trust Fund for the Wesley Bishop
North project, approximately $800,000 will
remain in the Trust Fund, according to
Chief Financial Officer Tom Merchel. If
the Wesley South project is approved next
year, $400,000 will remain in the Trust
Fund if both projects are directly using the
Trust Fund.
The rest of the meeting was dedicated to
discussing the Town Hall/Library project.
The council received an updated status
and timeline for the project. The issue that
appeared for the plan is the soils instabili-
ty under the foundation. The council was
presented with four options to resolve the
issues with the grounds to continue on
with the project.
I am pleased with where the discussion
has gone, Button said.
The council will meet again to discuss
the Town Hall/Library project, Monday
Aug. 20. The discussion for the Wesley
Bishop South project is pending until next
year.

Perkins Center for the
Arts receives donations
to fund scholarships
Perkins Center for the Arts an-
nually requests contributions to
its camp hero fund in order to
provide summer arts camp schol-
arships to children with limited
means of living in Camden. This
year, we were honored to receive
funding support from two young
adults, both long-term Perkins
students.
Skylar Ray Noyes has been in-
spired by a documentary about
children living in Camden, for a
number of years. This year, she
started a foundation called Skyes
the Limit, in order to help under-
privileged girls from city environ-
ments. Skylar has been raising
money for this foundation
through lemonade stands, dona-
tions from friends and family,
chores, pet care, and odd jobs.
Through her efforts she was able
to raise $400 and donated it to-
ward the camp scholarship fund
at Perkins Center. We look for-
ward to seeing her foundation
continue its good work.
Elizabeth Maguire has a long
tradition of selecting a charity to
feature as part of her birthday.
This year, instead of presents, she
asked the people who attended
her birthday party to make a do-
nation to Perkins Centers camp
hero program instead of birthday
gifts. Her efforts were able to
raise $175 toward our camp schol-
arship fund. We thank Elizabeth
and her family for this generous
act.
Perkins Center for the Arts is
honored to have such generous
young ladies as part of its family.
We applaud these acts of generos-
ity and their awareness of the di-
versity of need that exists in
South Jersey.
Perkins Center for the Arts is a
unique cultural organization ded-
icated to excellence in the arts
and to providing a wide range of
creative opportunities for people
of all ages and every level of
artistic development.
For more information call 856-

ter.org.

State Sen. Dawn Marie Ad-

welcomed the announcement that
the Burlington County Division
of Cultural Affairs and Tourism
will receive a grant for more than
$80,000 through the New Jersey
State Council on the Arts.
In this difficult economic en-
vironment, we are relieved that
this badly needed funding will

worthy organizations in our area.
This funding will help assure that
some deserving art programs will
continue to flourish and provide
cultural entertainment for our

In the past, groups that benefit-
ed from the funding included:

Burlington County Freeholder
Mary Ann OBrien, who oversees
the Health Department and ani-
mal shelter, announced a
reduced fees adopt-a-pet program
Dog Days of Summer at the
Burlington County Animal Shel-
ter.
A kickoff event was held on
July 28. Fees are now reduced for
both dogs and cats and the event
included pet friendly vendors,
rescue groups and fun activities
for the whole family.
The reduced dog adoption pro-
gram will run concurrently with
the adopt-a-shelter-cat promo-
tion, running through the end of
August.
The cat adoption fee has been
reduced from $45 to $20.
The reduced adoption fees for
dogs and puppies will be $40, as
opposed to the regular charges of
$75 for dogs.
This annual program helps to
give needy animals good homes
with reduced adoption fees and
also includes having their pets
spayed or neutered, said
OBrien.
The shelter provides spayed or
neutered animals for adoption in
hopes of controlling the countys
animal population.
The County Animal Shelter is
located on Academy Drive off of
Woodlane Road, behind the
Burlington County Library in
Westhampton Township.
Hours of operation are noon to
7:00 p.m. on Mondays and Thurs-
days; noon to 4 pm on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Fridays, and
noon to 3:30 pm on Saturdays. The
shelter is closed on Sundays and
holidays.
For more information, call the
County Animal Shelter at 609-265-
5073.
