Quantities and Chemical Reactions Assignment

As we have already discussed in class, chemistry is found everywhere in our daily lives: from chemical process involved in cooking our food to the combustion reaction that allows us to drive to work and school each day. Recently we have been learning about quantities in chemical reactions. There are many processes that require precise quantitative accuracy in every chemical reaction that occurs. Two examples where accuracy is of utmost importance are in the medical field and also in chemical industry. For this assignment you will research ONE of these situations and provide a report on the importance of chemical quantities in the medical field or chemical industry. Choose one of the following situations and answer the questions in a 2 page report. Please use size 12 font and double spacing. Use appropriate referencing. Medical Field Health care professionals are expected to calculate dosages of prescription drugs accurately and safely. This requires precision in applying fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, and metric conversions. Despite the care taken by health care professionals, improper medication use by patients accounts for about 30% of hospital emergency department visits. 1. Pick a specific medical situation where accurate calculations must be used. Explain how those quantities are determined. Ex. Chemotherapy, Radiation, etc. 2. Why might two people on the same drug regimen not necessarily take the same dosage to treat the same illness? 3. Find an example of where incorrect quantities were used in a medical situation and explain the situation and outcome. Chemical Industry Errors in quantitative accuracy have played a role in many industrial chemical disasters worldwide. Failing to adjust the quantities of chemicals needed to produce different batch sizes of a product have created runaway reactions, resulting in huge explosions. Such industrial accidents can have devastating short and long-term effects on the environment.

1. Pick a specific industry where quantitative accuracy is essential. Describe the industry and how those quantities are determined. Ex. Pesticide production, Water treatment 2. Find an example of a specific industrial accident that resulted in short or
