Defence Force.
In developing this Standard information was considered from MIL-W-283H-1987, United
States Military Specification for Water Purification Tablets—Iodine.
The term ‘normative’ has been used in this Standard to define the application of the
appendix to which it applies. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral part of a Standard.

1 SCOPE
This Standard specifies requirements for iodine releasing water disinfection tablets for use
by individuals to disinfect small amounts of water from untreated water supplies and water
of unknown qualities.

3 DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this Standard the definitions below apply.
3.1 Active iodine
Iodine in I2 form.
3.2 Disinfection tablet
A tablet used to destroy or reduce disease causing microorganisms present in water.
3.3 Intermediate package
Packing for unit package.
3.4 Iodine releasing water disinfection tablets
Consists of tetraglycine hydroperiodide (the active ingredient); sodium acid pyrophosphate,
anhydrous (the buffering agent); and talc (the binding agent). The chemical composition of
tetraglycine hydroperiodide is (NH 2CH 2COOH) 4HI:1.25I2. Iodine in I2 form, the active
agent for disinfection, is produced when tetraglycine hydroperiodide reacts with water.
3.5 Unit package
Packing for tablets.
4 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Raw material
4.1.1 Tetraglycine hydroperiodide
The active ingredient tetraglycine hydroperiodide shall conform to requirements specified
in Table 1 when tested in accordance with methods specified in Column 4 of the Table.
