Here is another DIGITAL PAINTING TUTORIAL that you can learn from.

This tutorial will cover a portrait of a lady. If you need a good set of brushes, go here http://adonihs.deviantart.com/art/My-Brush-Pack-118954791. This tutorial comes from Gerald Jelitto. Step 1 Open up a new Photoshop document and create a basic sketch on a new layer. You can draw the portrait in a sketch book then scan the image to your computer if you are more comfortable making the sketch that way. Otherwise you can use a digital drawing tablet for the line art. I used a digital drawing tablet for this project. Also, make sure the resolution is at least 300 pixels. This helps increase the quality of the DIGITAL PAINTING.

Step 2 Once you are comfortable with your sketch, fill in the portrait with some base colors using a large brush. Use #e57752 as the base color to cover the entire painting. The lightest tone used was #f6d1c8. This color is used to highlight the right side of her cheek and nose. #97391f was used to create shadows on her skin. Some areas include the left side of her face, under her mouth, the left side of her neck etc. Fill in her eye brows with #68382c and use black for her eyes.

Step 3 Decrease your brush by 10% and blotch in the medium tones of her face. The light source is comes from right to left. Make sure your painting is consistent with the light source. Use #cb5748 as a base color for the lips.

Step 4 Continue to work on the highlights and shadows. At this time I still use the same soft brush but with a smaller radius. Begin to work on the plans of the face and smoothing out the skin. Zoom in and add some details to the eyes. Remember that eyes are wet so they are going to appear glossy. Add small highlights in the eyes. Use #754833 for the top eyelids.

Step 5 The majority of the face is now done. Work on the details of the body. Use #81351e to fill in shadows. The shadows will bring form to neck, collar bone, breast and arms. Use a medium brush to accomplish this.

Step 6 If the original line-art is still distinctively showing through the body, decrease the opacity of the line-art layer. Fill in her clothes with black.

Step 7 Any details in the features of the face are accomplished in this step. Work on the lips, nose and eyes. Additionally, use #f6cec4 to create highlights. These highlights will really make the painting pop, make the features distinct and give vibrancy to the painting.

Step 8 Blotch in the hair with #512f26 (usually the darkest color). Then take a slightly lighter color like #804f41 with a large hard brush and lower the opacity and flow to about 60-70%. Continue this process again using #9c6457 and create strands of hair that flow from the crown of her head. Remember to use the darkest color under the area where her hair overlaps. Keep working on the details until you are satisfied. This concludes the DIGITAL PAINTING TUTORIAL.

This article will cover a Digital Painting Portrait Tutorial. We will be painting a portrait of a young woman in Photoshop. I will also be using a Wacom Intuos 3. This is an intermediate tutorial that will focus on photo-realism. Please add us on Twitter and like us on FACEBOOK. The painting comes from Hossein Sadjadi.

Step 1 The majority of the head has been painted in this step. If you are just starting out with DIGITAL PAINTING, please view some of the other basic tutorials. The dark brown line on the right side of her face is used to define the final shape of her head and cheek. The planes of the face, ear and neck are created with a large soft round brush. Continue to apply natural colors to the painting primarily focusing on the lights and darks of the portrait.

Step 2 Use a dark brown brush to define the edge of the ear, neck and chest. Fill in these areas with skin tones. Remember the light source is coming from right to left. The right side of her neck and shoulder should be darker to indicate shadows. Make sure to use a large soft brush for this process.

Step 3 Use a dark brown to define the arm. Decrease the size of your brush to a medium size and start to develop shape inside the arm, neck and chest. Always work from dark to light. You can create the different planes of color using different size brushes or the polygon lasso tool. If you use the polygon lasso tool, select the are you want to paint and then fill the area with color.

Step 4 Photo-realism is created with attention to details. Zoom in to about 200% and decrease your brush size. Start working on the details of the ear. If you have never drawn an ear or looked at the anatomy of the ear, please view How To Draw An Ear. This tutorial should really help you.

Step 5 Most of the detail has been created. Now we will focus on the hair. There are tons of ways to create hair. First start by filling in the hair with a dark brown. Use the smudge tool with a small brush and pull the hair out from the mass of color. This will only create her bangs and the outside strands of her hair.

Step 6 Zoom in and use a small brush to start to create strands of hair inside of the large brown mass. Make sure that you draw loosely. Her hair texture is fine and free. Make sure the hair flows out from her crown.

Step 7 Now work on the left side of her hair. This would be considered the second clump of hair because it is parted between the right side. Reference the final photo for a better explanation. Indicate the hair on her neck with a dark brown color.

Step 8 Use the same technique with the hair under her neck and to the right side of her face. In this step, you can create a new layer or work with the one you have now. Fill in the background with several colors using a large brush. We are just making large masses for now.

Step 9 Draw a hand using dark brown. Begin to add tones to the hand using a medium brush. Remember just to focus on the planes and the highlights and shadows.

Step 10 Continue the womans hair by adding large brown masses down the right side of her face. Slightly begin to draw her right arm. Zoom in and use a very small brush to start to work in the details of the hands. Form the structure of the hand, fingers and joints.

Step 11 From this point on, we are going to be working with details. This means you must use a medium to small brush.

Step 12 Use small brushes or the lasso tool to fill in the planes of the figure. Use a small brush to paint in the details of the hair. Use the eyedropper tool to select a color within a section, then take a medium brush and paint over that section. This is one technique to smooth out your painting. This makes the DIGITAL PAINTING PORTRAIT look more realistic.

Step 13 Add the final details. You can add a more detailed background in this step.

Check out this DIGITAL PAINTING TUTORIAL of a chic woman below. Step 1 Before the base of the painting is the drawing. Start with a basic sketch using a drawing tablet in Photoshop. Follow this sketch as a guideline for the painting. You are following these lines to delimit the colors and shadings. Make sure the proportions are correct in the sketch before your proceed. There are tones of tutorials on this site that will help you with proportion in portraiture. Check out this tutorial How To Draw People: Anatomy Of The Face for some quick instruction.

Step 2 The rest of this tutorial is going to focus on theories and techniques on creating skin and then theories and techniques for creating hair. When creating skin, start with base colors. You want to start with the darkest areas first and then work with the lighter colors throughout the whole process of creating skin. Focus on the shadows and highlights.

Step 3 Skin holds many variations of color. You are going to apply layers of different colors and you do not want to over blend. Monochromatic shading is what you do not want to do. It uses different highlights and shades of the same color. This error is fatal on surfaces like skin, which is comprised of colors like blue, purple, red, yellow and orange hues that most artist do not include in the skin. Basically, build the skin with many colors and not just pink.

Step 5 In this step, we are blending all the colors applied. For the best effect, uses adjustments of opacity and flow to get a smooth gradient of color. The one fatal mistake with this is over-blending. Over-blending happens when you take the brush and wash out most of the color and contrast on the surface in attempt to make the area smoother. This causes the portrait to lose definition and become a cloudy mess. To avoid this, never use the air-brush until after you blocked in all the colors with a hard brush then set the airbrush to light opacitys.

Step 6 After you block in the hair with a dark color. Begin to add form to the hair. Follow your line-sketch and the flow of the hair from the crown. Her hair should be built in layers. Gradually change the opacity and flow to when building different colors in the hair.

Step 7 In the final step, use adjustment layers to bring out the color and highlights of different sections. If you are skilled at using the burn/dodge tool, you can touch up the painting otherwise I would stick with adjustment layers. This concludes the DIGITAL PAINTING TUTORIAL.
