This latest certification recognises our
commitment to energy efficiency and our
expertise in this field, said Frdric Abbal,
president of Schneider Electric

France,
when the certification was announced
in June 2011. More than ever, we are
aiming for the highest standards in energy
management for both our customers
buildings and our own.
Schneider Electric is committed to the
continuous improvement of energy
performance for commercial and industrial
buildings, optimising their use, and reducing
their operating costs. Prior to reaching the
ISO

50001 milestone for its headquarters,

the company had obtained High Quality
Environmental standard (HQE) Exploitation,
ISO 14001, and NF EN 16001 certification.
The most demanding
energy management standard
The new ISO 50001 standard defines
the requirements for the development,
implementation, maintenance and
improvement of energy management systems.
It is intended to help companies accomplish
the following:
> Make better use of existing
energy-consuming assets
> Create transparency and facilitate
communication on the management
of energy resources
> Promote energy management best
practices and reinforce good energy
management behaviours
> Evaluate and prioritise the implementation
of new energy-efficient technologies
> Provide a framework for promoting
energy efficiency throughout the
supply chain
> Facilitate energy management
improvements for greenhouse gas
emission reduction projects
> Allow integration with other organisational
management systems such as
environmental, and health and safety
systems.
Because it is an international standard, ISO
50001 can be deployed to Schneider Electric
sites in 100-plus countries worldwide. It is
expected that the new standard could
impact 60 per cent of energy usage in the
world, with broad applicability across national
economic sectors.
In June 2011, Schneider Electric corporate
headquarters in Rueil-Malmaison, France, was certified
as complying with the new ISO 50001 standard for
energy management systems. It was the first building
in the world to earn such designation.

A showcase of energy efficiency solutions
Like many companies throughout the globe,
Schneider Electric manages complex building
environments and, at the same time, sets
ambitious energy efficiency targets. The
ISO 50001 certification was achieved as a
result of the implementation of Schneider
Electric internally developed energy efficiency
solutions, including:
> Renewable energy solutions
> Lighting, HVAC, and sun blinds control
> Energy monitoring and control
> Motor control for pumps and fans
> Efficient IT cabling
> Safe electrical distribution
> Advanced security and access control.
By intelligently integrating all building
systems on a single IP platform, the solution
development team was able to achieve up
to 30 per cent energy savings the same
energy performance that is promised
to customers.
Implemented within the facility are the following:
> Energy metering by zone, by usage in
each zone, and by energy
> Twelve temperature measurement
meters on air handling units, hot water
production, and heated floors
> 172 electrical energy meters, three gas
meters, 11 water meters.
The development teams target was to reduce
our energy consumption by a factor of four
compared with the former headquarters facility
and to achieve a consumption rate of 80 kWh/
m/year (244 kWh/m/year is the average office
buildings consumption in France).
More than 20000 visitors annually
The Schneider Electric corporate
headquarters site hosts more than 20000
visitors each year. Visitors are provided
an in-depth view of energy management
solutions. One of the buildings more
popular features is an energy dashboard
that displays the buildings annual energy
consumption. The information displayed
on the dashboard illustrates energy
consumption by type of use on a daily,
monthly, and annual basis. For each
parameter, consumption can be monitored
down to the level of individual workstations.

How green buildings impact people,
profits and the planet
Early action helps shorten ROI timelines
Whether breaking ground on a new building or operating/retrofitting
an existing facility, asset managers, property developers, property
managers, and occupants are under mounting pressure to achieve
higher performance with lower capital and operating costs. In addition,
a new awareness for conserving the finite resources of the planet
has placed a higher emphasis on energy consumption and water
conservation. Green buildings help to achieve both cost and resource
efficiency goals.
Three fundamental benefits result when
pursuing an aggressive green building strategy:
1. People - Increased productivity and well-being. The working
environment of employees within a building directly impacts their
productivity and overall satisfaction. Green buildings offer better
day lighting, outdoor views and indoor air quality. A healthy work
environment will attract new employees, will reduce employee
turnover, and will even result in less illness and reduced
absenteeism.
2. Planet - Reduced CO
2
emissions, reduced demand on municipal
services, reduced erosion. Green buildings have lower energy
and water usage. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions,
costs, and overall demand on utilities. In addition, traditional
construction practices that ignore the impact on the earth may
create significant negative consequences such as soil erosion
and flooding. Site management, landscaping, and other features
of green buildings can dramatically reduce these problems.
3. Profit - Lower energy use and increased property value.
Reduced energy costs are a major benefit of green buildings.
Measurement, monitoring, and automation of building systems
ensure that equipment is in use only when needed and that
operations function at peak efficiency.
By reducing a buildings operating costs, the net operating income
of that building is increased. According to the New Buildings Institute,
a nonprofit organisation that is working to improve the energy
performance of commercial buildings, increasing a buildings net
operating income increases the buildings appraised value by 10 times
the annual cost savings.

If enterprise data centres are
to become more energy
efficient, a number of pragmatic
operational approaches will have
to be implemented. Efficiency
optimisation must deal with the
data centre system as a whole.
Attempts to optimise the individual
inefficiencies will be less effective.
The following system-wide practices
provide a checklist for improved
data centre efficiency:
1 Powering off unused equipment
Power and cooling equipment that is
not needed should not be energised.
2 Deploying hot aisle /
cold aisle arrangement
The rows of racks should be oriented so
that the fronts of the servers face each
other. Such a layout, if properly organised,
can greatly reduce energy losses and also
prolong the life of the servers.
3 Tuning redundant systems
Subsystems that must be used
below their rated capacity (to support
redundancy) should be optimised for their
fractional-load efficiency, not for their full-
load efficiency.

best energy saving practices
Quick impact fixes for underperforming data centres

4 Leveraging the intelligence
of capacity management tools
These tools help to minimise stranded
capacity within the data centre, allowing
the maximum amount of IT equipment to be
installed within the gross power and cooling
envelope, pushing the system to the highest
point on its efficiency curve.
5 Instrumentation to monitor
energy consumption
The data centre should be instrumented
to identify and warn about conditions
that generate suboptimal electrical
consumption, so that energy waste
situations can be quickly corrected.
6 Scalable power and
cooling to enable right-sizing
The use of a scalable power and cooling
solution can increase efficiency in smaller
data centres or in data centres that are
early in their life cycles, as well as defer
capital and operating costs until needed.
7 Row-based cooling
Shortening the air flow path via row-based
cooling reduces mixing of hot and cold air
streams, which improves the predictability of
air distribution and improves the efficiency of
delivering cold air to the loads that need it.
8 Free cooling
This is a common term used to denote a
data centre operating in economiser mode.
While not truly free, these technologies
can be very helpful in improving data centre
efficiency in the appropriate geographies.
Cooling economiser systems save energy
by utilising outdoor air during colder months
of the year, allowing mechanical cooling
systems like chillers and compressors to be
shut off or operated at a reduced capacity.
9 High-efficiency UPS
Technologies are now available that
substantially increase the efficiency
obtainable by UPS systems.
10 Variable frequency drives (VFD)
Many electric motor-driven devices in the
data centre operate at full speed even when
the loads they are supporting require less
capacity. Variable frequency drives (VFD)
help to match the output of the fan to the
load. The speed control mechanism in
these devices helps to maximise efficiency.
Both management software and wired and
wireless thermal sensors can help in the
regulation or control of VFD drives.
11 Modular containerised solutions
Existing building structures often limit the
electrical efficiencies that can be achieved
through power and cooling distribution.
Manufacturers can now build modular,
containerised power and cooling modules
that utilise standard power and cooling
components and design them to a specific
power usage effectiveness (PUE) target.
Packaged, shipped, and installed as a
container that plugs into an existing building,
these solutions can rapidly increase
efficiencies within existing data centres.
12 Hot aisle containment
A hot-aisle containment system
(HACS) allows higher work environment
temperatures and increased chilled water
temperatures, which result in increased
economiser hours and significant electrical
cost savings.
Priorities for
execution of
this checklist
will differ
based upon the
characteristics
of the data
centre being
analysed.

Solutions
Four practical steps for reducing
overall energy costs
Individuals and companies realise that energy
consumption rules have changed
Individuals, corporations, and governments
across the globe waste billions of dollars in
energy each year. This is due to traditional
energy consuming habits that were formed
when energy was plentiful and inexpensive.
These habits must be modified for two
critical reasons: the steep cost of energy
negatively impacts profits and personal
wealth, and greenhouse gas emissions
contribute to the deterioration of the overall
quality of life on the planet.
Schneider Electric

has spent years developing

solutions that address this energy efficiency
challenge and has established a tested
energy management methodology. Energy
management has evolved from the simple
isolated actions of individuals (such as people
in their homes or businesses who change
their light bulbs from incandescent to CFL,
but who still continue to leave the light on
when no one is in the room), to an integrated
life cycle characterised by management of
multiple energy delivery and support systems.
How to accrue some quick energy wins
The Schneider Electric methodology to
energy management involves the following
four steps:
1. Measure consumption energy audits
and the installation of reliable power
quality meters establish the benchmark
or starting point from which you can
build an energy management plan.
2. Fix the basics low-cost easy fixes,
such as the installation of variable speed
drives in motors, pumps, or cooling
devices or the installation of high-
efficiency UPS can have an immediate
impact on your electrical bill.
3. Automate this eliminates reliance on
unpredictable human behaviour and
allows for the fine tuning of lighting
and HVAC systems so that the facility
or home can respond in an energy
efficient manner to dynamic
environmental conditions.
4. Monitor easy-to-use software identifies
energy waste trends and areas of
concern so that management can quickly
respond before money is wasted. Energy
management is not a one-shot operation,
but a continuous loop of improvement.

Measure your energy to save money and
improve efficiency
A smart, safe, and simple way to put energy
measurement everywhere you need it
As energy costs increase and more stringent
greenhouse gas emissions regulations are
introduced, its essential for your business to find
ways to reduce energy consumption. Having
distributed energy metering throughout each of
your facilities is a critical first step. It will help you
understand exactly where, when, and how much
energy you are consuming so you can discover
opportunities to improve your efficiency.
Up to now, adding metering at multiple
locations represented a significant investment,
due to the cost of each meter, other
associated components, and installation time.
Schneider Electric

now offers a simpler and

more affordable alternative. The Micrologic

E
control unit is a new option for the Compact

NS (630A >) and Masterpact

NT/NW ranges
of circuit breakers. Beyond its core protective
functions, the Micrologic E offers integrated
power and energy measurements. As part of
a new or upgraded installation, you can now
have an energy meter in every location you
have a circuit breaker.
The smart choice for smart metering
At only a small incremental cost above the
popular Micrologic A model, the Micrologic E
control unit delivers the energy data needed to
isolate where energy is being wasted and expose
energy-related costs at the building, department,
or machine level. This will help you drive energy
efficient practices throughout your organisation.
A safe pairing of protection and measurement
The Micrologic E features a unique internal
architecture that safely and reliably
separates protection and measurement
functions. Additionally, a display auto-scroll
function enables touch-free access to
measurements, while a new trip history
supports fast troubleshooting of the electrical
distribution system.
Simple access to energy intelligence
Energy data and other information are viewable
through the integrated display, a separate
display module, or over a communications
network. Schneider Electric or third-party
software can be used to efficiently gather
and analyse data from all circuit breakers,
helping you track consumption patterns, set
performance baselines, and validate the savings
from equipment upgrades or process changes.

Remote Energy Management.

Information the way you want it
Remote Energy Management (REM), a
cost-effective, web-based solution, helps
customers profile their energy usage
and carbon footprint across multiple
sites as well as generate alarms, savings
recommendations, and baseline comparisons.
With REM, customers can generate reports
on everything from energy load profiles to
sustainability achievements, then customise
and convert these reports into widgets for
their home pages. There is no need for a
separate log-in, and information can be
accessed through any Internet-capable
device. Because it is subscription-based, REM
eliminates the need for expensive software or
in-house IT expertise as well.
Making the complex simple
Our ambition is to turn energy digital, and to
do it everywhere possible, explains Philipe
Delorme, executive vice president of strategy
and innovation for Schneider Electric. Remote
energy monitoring applications, notes Delorme,
play a critical role by allowing customers to
access an energy dashboard easily.
Reports and analytics may be customised by
job function. A facilities manager could review
information on a shift-by-shift basis while
a senior executive might create summary
reports measuring performance against
budget or preset targets. Agnostic in nature,
Remote Energy Management is able to
aggregate, cleanse, store, and analyse data
from disparate sources, including multiple
building management systems. REM works
across walls, platforms and business units.

Flgger is a 200 million Denmark-based
manufacturer with seven factories located in
the Nordic countries as well as in Poland and
China. The 1,600 employees manufacture
tools, paint, and designer wallpaper.
Leaders at the Flgger plant in Kolding,
Denmark, were tasked with lowering
energy consumption in order to reduce
manufacturing costs. They knew this would
require outside expertise which could provide
them with tools for energy optimisation, real-
time measurement, and analysis. Flgger
decided to partner with Schneider Electric

.
Over the years, Schneider Electric has offered
energy audits for large office buildings.
Now the energy auditing concept is being
extended to industrial buildings. Jens Ellevang,
energy audit manager at Schneider Electric,
commented on the new initiative:

We observe that customers in industry are
focused on energy savings. During periods
of lower manufacturing production, many
firms target expenses in order to identify
opportunities to save money. More and more
industrial companies are also now more
politically aware and are interested in lowering
their CO
2
emissions.
Energy goal of 20 per cent reduction
in consumption achieved
The Schneider Electric industrial facility energy
audits were organised to support Flgger,
which had launched a major energy project.
Nanna Arre, environment manager at
Flgger, explains:
Working in cooperation with Schneider
Electric, we set a goal to save 20 per cent
on the energy consumption at seven of our
plants in Denmark, Sweden, and Poland.
We needed an overview of how we used
energy, in addition to expert advice on how
to prioritise and optimise our energy saving
opportunities. This would allow us to focus
on those areas that would reap the most
dividends.
According to the first report, which targeted
our plant in Kolding, we were able to achieve
our goal of saving about 20 per cent, with
a relatively minor level of effort. Our lighting
systems and ventilation were in particular
need of optimisation, Nanna explains, and
she adds a few words on the work that
transpired:
It has been very exciting and educational
to take part. We now view things in a
whole new way, and have felt throughout
that our needs have been taken very
seriously. We did not simply have a formula
imposed on us. Instead, through an ongoing
dialogue with Schneider Electric, we have
discovered how to better manage our energy
consumption ourselves.
Measurement and monitoring
sustain cost reductions
When energy audits and calculations are
carried out, energy-efficient products, such
as frequency converters and light meters,
are installed. Even though the energy
consumption should therefore be under
control, oftentimes that consumption begins
to increase very slowly once again. Flggers
initial energy audit was followed up with an
investment in measurement equipment.
In order to get rid of the so-called hidden
energy consumption, additional measuring
data was needed and the data had to be
able to be analysed, explains Jens Ellevang,
By analysing, you are able to take control, and
when you are in control, you can optimise.
Schneider Electric has delivered and installed
electricity meters and software at Flgger,
which is now capable of taking continuous
readings of its own energy consumption.
Nanna Arre concludes: With our increased
focus on energy-efficient initiatives, we are
going to save approximately 267 000 on the
bottom line. And that is not just this year, but
every year.

With 1,230 employees, 110 doctors, and 760
beds, the Quirn Group is one of the largest and
most respected private hospital groups in Spain.
Quirns goal is to provide reliable, cost-effective,
and modern hospital facilities, while ensuring
comfort and safety for patients and staff.
To help Quirn achieve this goal for its hospital
in Madrid, Schneider Electric

implemented
an integrated hospital infrastructure solution
based on its EcoStruxure

architecture.
By combining control and management of
HVAC, security, power, lighting and supervisory
systems onto one open platform, Quirn can
monitor and control energy costs while improving
the quality of patient care and providing a safe
and secure hospital environment.
Building management controls for HVAC
and lighting, such as zone scheduling, night/
unoccupied setback, and optimum start/stop
help to create a comfortable, energy-efficient
environment. For example, HVAC comfort
settings are automatically adjusted at night
and when rooms are vacant. This helps Quirn
reduce energy waste and operations costs.
The benefits of the Schneider Electric solution
include a centralised view of energy use and
surveillance which improves security and
simplifies management and maintenance.
Double digit capital and operations
cost savings
The EcoStruxure approach has resulted in
immediate, up-front savings for Quirn. In
comparison with a traditional, non-integrated
approach, capital expenses were reduced
by about 20 per cent thanks to reduced
commissioning and cabling. In addition,
efficient and optimised energy usage is
expected to reduce the hospitals ongoing
operating expenses by up to 38 per cent.
A Schneider Electric project manager served
as Quirns single point of contact to mitigate
risk and keep the project on time, on budget,
and on track. Now, a flexible EcoStruxure for
healthcare solution will allow Quirn to easily
and cost effectively grow their hospital, while
keeping integration costs to a minimum.
