PYP 6 Newsletter

Welcome to PYP 6!!!

The first Transdisplinary Theme to open this school year is WHO WE ARE. It is an inquiry into the nature of the self, beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health, human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures, rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human. In this unit, our central idea is People have developed human rights and responsibilities to meet their needs and to protect their well-being. However, we are going to focus more on Childrens Rights. Our lines of inquiry are as follows: The connection between childrens rights and responsibilities The importance of developing childrens rights Promoting childrens rights and responsibilities At the end of this unit, students will choose one aspect of children rights (education, social, nationality, and political). Then they will promote its practices using a blog and a poster.

PERFORMING ARTS

In the first unit, students are going to learn skills in Drama. The lesson will focus on script writing and role-play. Students are going to apply their understanding about rights and responsibilities in building the script. Students will choose a case study about Bullying and try to solve the problem through a play. They will write their own script and perform it in front of their peers.

RELIGION

Religion will support PYP 6 by having FAITH in relation to Childrens Rights. Students will explore some freedom in faith, analyze some cases and discuss them from the religious perspectives. As the summative task, the students will choose some cases and analyze them. They will compare them to the Human Rights Declaration, UUD 1945, Childrens Right, the Bible reference message, and give a solution.

MATHS
Students started the year reviewing grade 5 Maths materials for a week including place value and number operations. They will be continued with converting fractions in this unit of inquiry. It is expected that students are able to do multiplication and division of fractions. Students will also learn about how to be able to change fractions into decimals, decimals into percentages, and percentages into fractions. At the end of the unit students will be expected to be able to use fractions, decimals and percentages interchangeably in real life situations (discount, tax, and interest).

INFORMATION LITERACY
In this unit, PYP 6 students learn to formulate their own research by understanding the stages. First they start with questioning, then they will learn how to answer the questions based on the keywords. After that, they will start their research by finding information through various resources, selecting relevant information, which is going to be used, recording the information, and finally presenting the information.

MANDARIN
The main objectives for PYP 6s first topic are making and answering a phone call, and talking through the phone. The language points are starting a telephone call, asking for and giving a phone number, having wrong numbers, leaving messages, and making an appointment. Students will have a phone call dialogue with partner, and teachers will record the performance as their summative task. As the final outcome, students should be able to: 1. Understand the structure of a phone call conversation. 2. Use the correct expressions for certain conditions. 3. Present a role-play in front of the class fluently and with confidence.

P.E.
During the first term, PYP 6 students will complete two topics simultaneously in PE lessons: movement to music and gymnastics. In movement to music, PYP 6 will learn about performing and creating freestyle movements using a variety of sport equipment such as basketballs, hoops, flags and ropes in small groups. In these lessons students will also be focusing on moving safely while developing their creativity, confidence, appreciation, cooperation and independence.

BAHASA INDONESIA ENGLISH


In English this unit, students will be learning how to study literature in small groups with Literature Circles. They will also study literature independently by completing Independent Reading Contracts in class. A writing editing system will be introduced and they will practice it by proof reading their own written work, that of their peers and pieces selected by the teacher. Students will be writing in the genre of Narrative. Students will focus on listening for meaning. They will continue their home reading program with the Reading A-Z readers borrowed from English class and may supplement that with their online memberships at RAZ-KIDS. Selama 6 minggu pertama ini, siswa kelas 6 belajar tentang bermacam-macam keterampilan dan pengetahuan kebahasaan, antara lain: 1. Kalimat aktif dan pasif. 2. Makna denotasi dan konotasi, serta penggunaannya dalam konteks kalimat. 3. Kalimat langsung dan mengubahnya menjadi kalimat tidak langsung dan sebaliknya. Semua pengetahuan kebahasaan ini akan digunakan untuk menulis berita yang nantinya akan dibacakan. Siswa akan berperan sebagai presenter berita seperti yang ada di televisi. Untuk itu keterampilan yang dibutuhkan tidak hanya menulis, tetapi juga membaca nyaring dengan intonasi dan bahasa tubuh yang proporsional. Orang tua dapat mendukung dengan cara: 1. Mendampingi siswa mencatat berita dari televisi atau peristiwa yang terjadi di sekitarnya. 2 2. Menyiapkan pakaian yang sesuai.
