DELPHOS Delphos is lucky to
be home to not one but two historical
museums located on Main Street. One
of those museums is the Museum
of Postal History, one of only three
dedicated to the postal service in the
United States.
The Museum of Postal History had
its humble beginnings in 1995 in the
basement of the post office. Inspiration
came to museum curator and former
Delphos Postmaster Gary Levitt in
1993 when he stumbled upon original
photographs of the Delphos Post Office
and its dedication in 1933. Levitts
curiosity then led to finding, with help,
other photos, Delphos Herald news
stories, local brick and lumber samples
and more. Noticing it was 60 years
since the post office was opened, Levitt
and others put together an open house
to build awareness. The exhibit was a
success which led to bigger aspirations.
It went really well and we had such
great artifacts. So we thought it should
be a permanent museum. If we can have
a canal museum on Main Street, why
not a postal one as well? he asked.
It took two years of hard work and
on Nov. 11, 1995, the museum opened
to the public 62 years to the day
since the Delphos Post Office had its
dedication in 1933.
The museum moved to its present
location at the corner of Main and
Fourth streets in 2008.
One attraction is a series dedicated
to the transportation and delivery and
its evolution over the many years. The
museum is also home to historical
murals that were done by Delphos own
art guild as well as a dedicated replica
of a railway mail service car that was
used in Delphos.
The museum is now home to a
wide array of postal artifacts from an
extensive stamp collection to a buggy
used for rural postal delivery. And
though the list of artifacts is impressive,
the true draw of the museum for people

DEFIANCE As they always
say, One mans trash is another
mans treasure. The Hench relatives
found just how true that was as they
were cleaning up their deceased
aunt, Jean Henchs, old historic
home in Defiance.
Their find? Over 700 baseball
cards from 1910 in pristine condition.
Their value? Appraisers and experts
say they could be worth $3 million.
Karl Kissner, a nephew of Jean
Hench, did not think a whole lot
about the old green soot-covered
box he and his cousin Karla found
under an old dollhouse in the attic.
They looked in the box and there
were hundreds of old baseball cards
tied together with twine. They knew
they could have something valuable,
but it was two weeks later before the
family found out exactly what they
had found and their value.
How did these priceless baseball
cards come about and what were
they doing in the Hench home?
The story of the baseball cards
and the Hench family can be traced
back to 1894 when Carl Hench came
to the United States from Germany.
At first he was a barrel maker in
New Bavaria and in 1906 came to
Defiance.
He opened Henchs Meat Market
which also sold candies and dry
goods. The store was located on
Fifth and Perry Streets in Defiance.
Kissner said, In those days, they
must have had these baseball cards
as a promotional item. He probably
gave them away as an incentive
when they bought another item.
We suspect that he got them from a
candy company who distributed the
cards with caramels.
It is believed that Hench just
stored the cards and forgot about
them. In 1951, the Henches and
another family grocery store, The
Nolan Brothers, combined their
business and grocery expertise
and formed what is now Chief
Supermarket.
The house the Henches lived in
and where the treasured baseball
cards were found has been in the
family for over 100 years. The two-
story home was built by Tenzer
Lumber Company between 1880
and 1900. Carl Hench purchased the
home in 1909 and raised his family.
Jean Hench was the last relative
to live in the family home. She never
married or had any children. When
she died in October 2011, she left the
estate to her 20 nieces and nephews.
Karl Kissner, the youngest, was put
in charge of the estate.
She was a so-called pack rat
and with three generations of
memorabilia to go through, it wasnt
until two weeks later and after some
research that Karl realized that the
baseball cards were a rare find.
One of the first things he did was
take them over across the street and
put them in a bank vault. Eight of
the cards were sent to expert Peter
Calderon of Heritage Auctions in
Dallas.
It so happened that these old
cards were from the E98 series. They
included Hall of Fames Ty Cobb, Cy
Young and Honus Wagner. Experts
say there may never be another find
of this magnitude.
Heritage Auction plans on selling
the baseball cards over the next two
or three years with the 20 nieces and
nephews sharing the benefits.
Karl Kissner said, Once I realized
what we had, I could not sleep until I
had them in a safe place.
Kissner is the owner/operator of
Kissners Restaurant in Defiance.
In fact, his father, Bruno Kissner,
purchased the restaurant 1928. Karl
has not let the find slow him down
any stating, I began working in
this restaurant when I was 11. I do
dishes, cook, clean and whatever
needs to be done.
In fact, Grandpa Karl and my
uncle used to walk down to Kissners
Restaurant from the market and get
their lunch many years ago. My
father, Bruno, married Margaret,
one of the Hench sisters.
The baseball card find has flooded
the media, but you can find Karl
Kissner still cooking, doing dishes,
and running the family restaurant.
When asked if he was a baseball
fan, he said he follows area major
leaguers, Chad Billingsley and Jon
Neise.

Looking through my
computer I came across the
following article.
Its an oldy but goody one
from the past.
Someone asked me the other
day about what I believe in. What
are my priorities? What are my
thoughts on religion? What are
my thoughts on politics? Good
old Dad always said the one
sure way to start an argument is
to discuss politics and religion.
So maybe I had better stay away
from those two.
As to what I believe? I
believe; shots were fired from
the grassy knoll in Dallas, the
American dollar is still the
best currency in the world, the
United States is the best place
on this earth to live, ice cream
taste better when it is hot in the
summer, the first kiss is always
the one you remember most,
saying thank you and please is
still an important part of our
vocabulary, listening to your
parents (even though it doesnt
makes too much sense to you)
is still an important part of
growing up, you should give a
man an honest days work for an
honest days pay, if you smile
people will wonder just what
you are up to and maybe that
will make them smile, marriage
should be between a man and
women, love for animals makes
you a good person, all men and
women who serve their country
are heroes not just those who
serve in combat.
The list could go on forever
so I must stop with this one
belief: Believe in God, Family,
and your fellow man and all
things will seem to work out just
fine.

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

All investments carry risk. But, as an investor, one of the biggest risks you face is that of not achieving your
long-term goals, such as enjoying a comfortable retirement and remaining fnancially independent throughout
your life. To help reach your objectives, you need to own a variety of investment vehicles and each carries its
own type of risk.
If you spread your investment dollars among vehicles that carry different types of risk, you may increase your
chances of owning some investments that do well, even if, at the same time, you own others that arent. As a result,
you may be able to reduce the overall level of volatility in your portfolio. (Keep in mind, though, that diversifcation cant
guarantee a proft or protect against all losses.)
To diversify your risk factors, you frst need to recognize them. Here are some of the most common types of
investment risk:
* Market risk This is the type of risk that everyone thinks about the risk that you could lose principal if the
value of your investment drops and does not recover before you sell it. All investments are subject to market risk.
You can help lessen this risk by owning a wide variety of investments from different industries and even different
countries.
* Infation (purchasing power) risk If you own a fxed-rate investment, such as a Certifcate of Deposit (CD),
that pays an interest rate below the current rate of infation, you are incurring purchasing power risk. Fixed-income
investments can help provide reliable income streams, but you also need to consider investments with growth
potential to help work toward your long-term goals.
* Interest-rate risk Bonds and other fxed-income investments are subject to interest-rate risk. If you own a
bond that pays 4% interest, and newly issued bonds pay 5%, it would be diffcult to sell your bond for full price. So if
you wanted to sell it prior to maturity, you might have to offer it at a discount to the original price. However, if you hold
your bonds to maturity, you can expect to receive return of your principal provided the bond does not default.
* Default risk Bonds, along with some more complex investments, such as options, are subject to default
risk. If a company issues a bond that youve bought and that company runs into severe fnancial diffculties, or even
goes bankrupt, it may default on its bonds, leaving you holding the bag. You can help protect against this risk by
sticking with investment-grade bonds those that receive high ratings from independent rating agencies such as
Standard & Poors or Moodys.
* Liquidity risk Some investments, like real estate, are harder to sell than others. Thus, real estate is
considered more illiquid than many common investments.
Make sure you understand what type of risk is associated with every investment you own. And try to avoid
overloading your portfolio with too many investments with the same type of risks. Doing so will not result in a totally
smooth journey through the investment world but it may help eliminate some of the bumps along the way.

Question: I have been ready a lot about increased cases of West Nile and Equine Encephalitis. What can
be done to protect my animals?
Answer: West Nile Encephalitis is a favivirus. The virus is spread by mosquitoes that become
infected from feeding from infected birds. After feeding from an infected bird, the virus eventually reaches
the mosquitos salivary glands. Transmission occurs when the infected mosquito then feeds on humans and
animals possibly injecting the virus during the bite. Transmission does not occur with every bite. Only about
1% whom are bitten become infected and severely ill.
Cases of West Nile are being reported earlier this year. This is most likely due to the mild winter that
we had. Mild winters do not allow a deep freeze that is needed to control insect populations by killing off the
adult stages. West Nile virus is also found in the Culex species of mosquitoes which survive through the
winter in the adult stage.
After the animal is bitten by an infected mosquito, the West Nile virus multiplies in the animals blood
system. It then crosses the blood brain barrier and infects the brain. The virus then interferes with the normal
central nervous system functioning and then causes infammation of the brain. Clinical signs include fever,
neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, paralysis and death.
Clinical signs that have been reported in dogs such as weakness, ataxia, faccid paralysis, decreased or
absent patellar refex, inability to stand, muscle tremors, depression, hyperesthesia, seizures, and fever.
Cats clinical signs usually include seizures ataxia, nystagmus, and hyperesthesia.
There is not cure for an animal infected with West Nile. The treatment given by your veterinarian is
supportive; in other words, managing any symptoms that are present to help your pets discomfort. This
treatment is as any with a viral agent. Full recovery is likely from the infection. Most horses that are infected
usually recover, but there have been cases of horse deaths from West Nile.
There is no vaccine for dogs or cats. You should discuss with your veterinarian types of protection to
use. There are some pet approved insecticides that are sold. DO NOT use DEET-based repellants that
are approved for human use. A vaccine is available to horses and should be given annually. It is strongly
recommended for horse owners to vaccinate their animals. West Nile vaccine is not the same as Eastern
equine encephalitis (EEE), or Western equine encephalitis (WEE), or the Venezuelan equine encephalitis
(VEE). West Nile encephalitis is from the family of favivirus. They present similar signs, but the vaccines
do not cross-protect.
Unfortunately due to the economy, many pet owners are choosing not to vaccinate their animals to
save money. This is also contributing the increase of cases that are being reported. The best prevention is
protection. Be sure to discuss the best options with your veterinarian.

perusing or receiving an extensive tour,
the museum tells the story of the postal
service and the enormous impact it has
had on todays society. It showcases the
significant role it had in the development
of the nation and how it helped shape
our culture today, through transportation
research, telegraph development and
more.
The museum reminds visitors the
importance of the post office, one of
the few agencies even mentioned in the
Constitution, and that the post office
used to be the major banking system
in the country. The mail carriers were
even in charge of keeping count of deer
and other wildlife to help determine
hunting season. These are just two of
the many ways the museum imparts the
significance and the history of the postal
service. Visitors will hear the story of the
struggles old and new of the post
office and its journey from the horse
and buggy colonial days to the car and
segway days of today and tomorrow.
The museum sees visitors from far
and wide to hear the important history
of the postal service. They come from
all over Northwest Ohio and even from
Germany. Whether its the Goldwings
Club, the Red Hat Society or a senior
citizens group, the museum has many
pass through its doors.
The nonprofit museum stays
operational with tax deductible
donations, volunteers, grants and
periodical excursions. The excursions
are motor-coach trips Levitt plans
and leads. The escorted tours start in
Delphos and go to destinations all over
the United States as travelers enjoy
exciting and educational adventures.
Past destinations have been Boston,
Gettysburg, Washington, D.C., and
Nashville. The museum has a trip
coming up in October to New York
City. If anyone is interested in the New
York trip, reservations can be made by

The museum is open from 1-3 p.m.
on Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on
Saturdays or by appointment. If anyone
is curious and wants more information,
they can go to the museums web
site at postalhistorymuseum.org.
At the site, people can sign up for
the museums newsletter, get more
information about the excursions or
wet their appetite for enriching and
critical American history. On the
site is a three minute teaser tour of
the museum. The brief pictorial tour
will only heighten excitement for
potential visitors. The trip, whether
it take a tank of gas or more, will be
worth the time. Admission is free but
the deep enriching knowledge gained
as well as the fun that will accompany
education will be priceless.

with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She is employed as a
Teacher at North Broadway Childrens Center in Columbus, OH. Evan
is a 2007 graduate of Crestview High School. He graduated from The
Ohio State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He
also graduated from their ROTC program and is a 2

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could.Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.

Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated

Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found

If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.

PEACH CREAM PIE
FILLING:
8 oz. cream cheese
2 eggs
half cup sugar
2 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Beat eggs, soften cream
cheese and beat with the sugar
and add to beaten eggs, milk,
flour and vanilla mixture. Pour
into unbaked pie shell, Bake
for 30 minutes.
GLAZE:
5 or 6 peaches sliced
2 tablespoon cornstarch
fourth cup sugar
1 tsp. lemon juice
Cook over low heat till
mixture thickens and pour over
baked pie. Cool.

CHP Hospice hosted its annual
Rays of Hope camp, June 26-28 at
Camp Clay in Van Wert for children
who have experience a recent loss
of a loved one.
The camp offers youth from
throughout the area, the opportunity
to gain a better understanding of
their grief with other peers of their
age.
Tatiana Olmeda didnt really
want to attend grief camp. However,
her brothers and sisters came last
year to explore their emotions
after their older brother died, and
they convinced the 14-year-old to
attend.
It is just really hard going
through the process, said Olmeda.
Now she says Rays of Hope has
helped her delve into the feelings
she would typically hide.
Tatianas brother, Ramone,
completed an art project about his
brother.
My family has a little garden
for him in the back yard, he said.
Im going to put it back there.
Alyssa Walter has come for the
past four years. Her father died in a
construction accident. She was also
hesitant that first year.
Every year I feel like I have
less grief and gain more closure,
she said.
Heather Fields came after her
grandfather died of cancer. Camp is
a place where she can talk openly
about the pain she usually doesnt
feel comfortable sharing because
most of her friends havent been
through what she has.
While mornings are for sharing
and education; in the afternoon, the
kids take part in typical summer
camp activities like swimming,
games and rock wall climbing.
We had to write in what we feel
but what others see on the outside,
said Tatiana about a picture of
herself surrounded by words like
happy and funny, but with words
sad and angry in the middle.
She says her true feelings often
arent the ones she lets people see.
Rays of Hope provides kids with
an outlet for those true feelings.

The village of Sharpsburg just
missed being called Florentine in
1886. Violet and Zenz City were
two other names applied to this rural
village of Sharpsburg, near Fort
Recovery in Gibson Township.
The 1907 History of Mercer
County, (Chicago, IL: Biographical
Pub. Co.) and the 1978 History
of Mercer County, (TX: Taylor
Pub. Co.) relate history of the Zenz
Family. In 1867, George Zenz
arrived in Gibson Township; he
farmed and established a store. In
1903 the son John Zenz became the
store owner. In 1905, John erected
the large block home in 1905, which
reminded the neighbors of a castle.
When John Zenz advertised his
bid for Mercer County Auditor, he
stated that he took a course in the
Sprague Correspondence School of
Law, at Detroit, and then registered at
Columbus, Ohio, and read law under
Judge H.A. Miller. [E.G. Ungerer
was elected as Mercer County
Auditor in the 1916 elections.]
The various names assigned to this
village of Sharpsburg are of interest.
I referred to my book about maps
of Mercer County, History of the
Land Between the Saint Marys and
Wabash River Valleys, 1755-2000,
for name identification of the site of
Sharpsburg. The 1868 Atlas of the
State of Ohio, (New York: Henry
Stebbens) did not identify this site in
Gibson Township of Mercer County.
A one room School House was
located at this site, in the 1870s. In
1868, Saint Paul Catholic Church
was dedicated at this site. (I wrote
about that old log church becoming
a barn, in 1890, in my December
22, 2011 Our Old Book Case.)
The 1876 Map of Mercer County
(Philadelphia: F. Gourquin) marked
the school and the church, but the
1876 Map did not assign a name to
this village site at that time.
The 1888 Atlas of Mercer
County (Philadelphia, PA: Griffing,
Gordon & Co.) marked the site as
Violet Post Office, but did not
assign a name to this Village. The
1897 Map of Mercer County
(Columbus, OH: E.H. Caylor)
identified the site as the village
of Violet. The 1900 Atlas of
Mercer County (Celina, OH: J.E.
Hamburger) marked this site as Violet
Post Office, but did not assign a name
to the village. The 1907 History of
Mercer County, identified the village
as Sharpsburg. About that time, a
few citizens tried to change the name
of the village to Zenz City. In spite
of their efforts, the village came to be
known as Sharpsburg. The village
was neither platted nor incorporated.
Perhaps, Gibson Township Trustees
might have records of accurate
information about this history.
None of these references provide
the actual history of the naming of
the U.S. Post Office in this village. I
have been doing research to acquire
the history of Mercer Countys Post
Offices. The Violet Post Office was
established on July 8, 1886, and was
discontinued May 31, 1904, at the
arrival of Rural Free Delivery
I have a copy of a letter, dated June
19, 1886, to the First Assistant Post
Master General at Washington D.C.,
signed by Jacob Anthony, Post Master
of Fort Recovery, the nearest village
to the site of Sharpsburg at that time.
John P. Wourms was the proposed
Post Master at the Violet Post Office
in 1886. The proposed name for this
Post Office was originally Florentine
Special Post Office, in the village of
Violet, Ohio, as confirmed by the
1886 map attached to that 1886 letter.
On the line, The proposed office to
be called: was written Florentine.
However, in a different handwriting,
someone had taken his ink pen and
scratched out the name, Florentine,
and had written the name Violet
for the Post Office. This 1886 U.S.
Post Office correspondence confirms
the name of the village in 1886 was
Violet. This 1886 letter confirms
that the original name of the Post
Office was meant to be Florentine,
but whoever put the final letter in
the post office mail, changed the
history of Sharpsburg and named
the post office, Violet. Since the
Violet Post Office was closed in
1904, perhaps, that name was lost to
history? I do not have facts as to why
or when the village became known as
Sharpsburg.

Republican Primary Election August 8, 1916. John Zenz was born
in 1876 at Violet, now known as Sharpsburg.

Students place
in competition
A component of the recently established agriculture pro-
gram at Wright State Lake Campus included a course on dairy
cattle evaluation. Participating students learned about dairy
cattle physiology, pedigree, linear evaluation, and oral defense
of reasons. Students in the class competed in the National
Association of College Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA)
Dairy Judging Contest held in Wooster, Ohio on April 17th.
Members of the Wright State Lake Campus teams did well
in the Associates and Bachelors Degree Divisions of competi-
tion. In the Associates Degree Division awards were given
for top placings in the respective breeds judged that day (Hol-
stein, Ayrshire, and Jersey) as well as overall individual and
team awards. Second Place in Ayrshire (Associate Division)
was Damon Bertke and Third Place (Associate Division) was
Brian Schulte. Overall awards indicated the team placed well.
Damon Bertke was the Second Place Individual and the Asso-
ciates Degree team was 2nd Place in their Division.
The Bachelors Degree Team won their division in compe-
tition. Garrett Dorsten placed 2nd overall as an individual,
with Kevin Kaup placing third. The Bachelors Degree team
was 2nd in each of the breed divisions (Holstein, Jersey, and
Ayrshire), as well as placing 2nd as a team in Oral Reasons. A
number of the Bachelors Degree Team Members placed indi-
vidually in breed competition with Garrett Dorsten placing
Second in the Jersey Breed, while Kevin Kaup was Third in
Holsteins and First in Ayrshire.
Representing Wright State Lake Campus in competition included: Damon Bertke, garrett Dorsten, Alex Fullenkamp,
Abe gibbs, Jordan Hellwarth, Kevin Kaup, greg Koesters, Tyler Koesters, Joanna Osterloh, Kassie Pease, Wendi
Phillips, Brian Schulte, and Matt Thobe. The team was coached by Dr. greg Homan and sponsored by Farm Credit
Services.

Parkway FFA Presents Community
with Blue and Gold Award
The Parkway FFA
Chapter awarded three
area businesses during the
80th annual FFA banquet.
The Blue and Gold award
is awarded to businesses
that donate to benefit the
Parkway FFA Chapter and
local community. The
three businesses were
Willshire Sportsman Club,
Helena Agronomic Center
in Coldwater, and Burtch
Seed.
Willshire Sportsman
Club sponsored the Park-
way Wildlife and Nature
Interpretation teams. They
provided the team mem-
bers with t-shirts as well as
training to prepare them
for the events. Willshire
Sportsman Club paid for
each members entry fees
to each event as well.
Helena Agronomic Center in Coldwater has made many donations to the Parkway FFA for many activites and
awards given. They also provided materials needed for the FFA Mercer County Invitational. Helena in turn is a
part of the Syngenta blue jackets program in which the Parkway FFA Chapter received a free FFA jacket for
members to use.
Burtch Seed has helped not only the chapter, but also the community by furthering the agriculture advance-
ments. Burtch Seed has made many donations for the events and activities Parkway FFA participates in through-
out the year. They also have partnered with the Parkway FFA to hold the Burtch Seed Customer Appreciation Day
which helps promote the Parkway FFA Chapter and Parkway Local Schools.
For these businesses dedication for helping the Parkway FFA, they have received lifetime membership to
Parkway FFA Boosters as well as membership to the National FFA Alumni. The Parkway FFA Chapter would like
to thank these businesses for their support.

Hosts grow and
Know Day
Attendees can learn skills to
manage their property
The growing popularity of
gardening, food preservation
and other back to basics
topics will be the focus of a
new day-long seminar spon-
sored by the Ohio Farm Bu-
reau Federation.
The first ever Grow and
Know Days will be held
July 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
at the Bob Evans Farm in Rio
Grande. The event is billed as
a how-to seminar for property
owners, animal lovers, gar-
deners and food enthusiasts.
Its going to be a great day
of hands-on learning, said
Cara Lawson, promotion spe-
cialist for Ohio Farm Bureau
and one of the coordinators
for the event. This program-
ming is in direct response to
members wanting this sort of
information.
Attendees will be able to
select four different breakout
sessions with topics including
gardening, backyard egg pro-
duction, horse ownership,
food preparation and preser-
vation, fruit and nut tree man-
agement, property protection,
herb production, fence and
barn maintenance, beekeep-
ing and more.
Cost to participate is $25
for Farm Bureau members
and $85 for non members,
(which includes a member-
ship). In addition to the pro-
gram, registration includes a
Bob Evans cookout lunch on
the farm. Registration dead-
line is July 1. Event registra-

My job as an agricultural
journalist is fun because it al-
lows me to travel this fascinat-
ing state on a regular basis, of-
ten on Ohios 26 beautiful des-
ignated scenic byways (five of
which have a national designa-
tion). The five National Scenic
Byways in the state highlight
some of the states finest fea-
tures, including Ohios bounti-
ful agricultural production.
Lake Erie Coastal National
Scenic Byway
June is wine month and there
is no better route in the Midwest
to travel for fine wines than
Ohios northern coast. Ohios
wine business is booming and
gaining more international rec-
ognition every year for its high
quality wine production along
the temperate shores of Lake
Erie.
This route also offers ample
natural attractions for fishing
and bird enthusiasts and the
thrill-seeking appeal of Cedar
Point. Roller coasters, walleye
and wine, how can you go
wrong?
Historic National Road
National Scenic Byway
Much of this byway is lined
with interesting agricultural at-
tractions. Dull Homestead Farm
in Montgomery County features
a diversified operation including
hogs and seed corn, but the real
attention getter is the farms tow-
ering windmills and dedication to
renewable energy. The Dulls
have a visitors center to inform
guests about the farm. Devine
Farms and Pigeon Roost Farm in
Licking County offer pumpkins
and a myriad of fun family ori-
ented activities in the late sum-
mer and fall. The trip through
Belmont County passes near the
states largest Christmas tree
farm run by the Feisley family.
The renowned Dickinson Cattle
Co. Longhorn Cattle Ranch is
also near the route, just outside
of Barnesville. Also, be sure to
note the productive corn and soy-
bean fields lining much of Route
40 that are pumping dollars into
the economy and biofuels into
our vehicles.
Amish Country National
Scenic Byway
Few routes through Ohio of-
fer more picturesque glimpses of
modern and Amish agriculture
than this byway winding through
the heart of the nations largest
Amish community in and around
Holmes and Wayne counties.
Grazing dairy cattle, rolling hay
fields and plenty of down home
Amish appeal (and merchandise)
attract many visitors each year.
Ohio leads the nation in Swiss
cheese production, and ranks
high in other types of cheese pro-
duction, largely due to this region
of the state.
Ohio River National Scenic
Byway
It is hard to beat the rolling
landscape, charming towns, his-
torical and agricultural attractions
that ooze from this 452-mile
route along the Ohio River
through 14 counties. A few of my
favorite stops along the way, or
nearby the designated byway, in-
clude Sweetapple Farms (agri-
tainment), Stacy Family Farms
(strawberries) and Grimms
Green Acres (apples) in Washing-
ton County; the bridge from
Galia County to Point Pleasant,
West Virginia, home of the mys-
terious Mothman that inspired a
book and movie; the appealing
murals in Portsmouth; and some
tasty Montgomery Inn ribs and a
Reds game in Cincinnati.
The Canal Way National
Scenic Byway
This byway runs from Cleve-
land to Dover along the path of the
Ohio and Erie Canal and offers
several agricultural destinations.

The July 12, 2012 meeting of the
Galaxy Leaders 4-H club was called
to order by Vice President Cody Free-
man. Five members answered roll
call by saying if they were ready for
project judging. Four advisors and
four guests were also present.
Brayden Quinn led the Pledge of
Allegiance and Meg Birkmeyer led
the 4-H Pledge.
The Secretary and treasurers re-
ports were read and approved. Sa-
mantha Fritz made the motion and
Meg Birkmeyer seconded it. Motion
passed.
Under old business: members
have until August 1st to order t-shirts.
Members were reminded to keep
working on their projects. Advisor
Carol Westgerdes asked for ideas on
promoting how to join the club dis-
play for the booth. She also explained
what the back drop would look like
and asked for volunteers to help put
up the booth on August the 6th.
Under new business: Help is
needed to help with the Special Inter-
est Fun Fest on Saturday morning of
the fair. She also asked for helpers to
work foods, clothing and special in-
terest judging. Brianna Wenning had
a June birthday. She received a candy
bar. We had no July birthdays. Please
show up for your judging, be early and
bring all things that you did for your
project to show the judge. Following
the meeting the advisors looked at the
projects and answered questions they
had. The Happy Hearts 4-H club
needs extra helpers to run their shift in
the Fun Tent at the Community Pic-
nic. Volunteers signed up to help.
There were no reports for this
meeting.
The meeting was adjourned by
Meg Birkmeyer and seconded by
Samantha Fritz. Amanda Melhouse
served refreshments. The members
played hide and seek for recreation.
Important dates to remember: July
16th skillathon, July 17th clothes
and food judging, July 18th spe-
cial interest judging, July 23rd 4-H
Committee meeting, July 24th Jr.
Fair Board meeting.
The next meeting will be on Sep-
tember 13, 2012 at 7PM at the Cold-
water Library meeting room. This
will be the end of the year achieve-
ment night. Hannah Fox and Wy-
att Fritz will have reports. Rachel
Schmackers and Stacy Hess will have
refreshments. NO AUGUST MEET-
ING.

The Mercer Co. Juvenile
Court would like to invite you to
attend the Expanding Horizons
Olympics. The Olympics will be
held on August 15th with opening
ceremonies slated to begin at 9:11
a.m.. The event will be held at the
Westerheide Pond, 5276 Fleetfoot
Rd, Celina.
In the spring of 2010, the
Juvenile Court Probation Dept.
began a walkers/runners program
with the goal of keeping kids
involved and busy with a positive
activity throughout the summer
months. Last year, with the help
of the Civic Foundation, the
Expanding Horizons program
was developed. This program
expanded on the walkers/runners
group adding incentives for kids
to earn through good grades,
community service work and
other positive behaviors. Last
year we had eight kids compete
in at least one Mercer Health
5K challenge race. Fifteen kids
earned at least one trip, with
everyones favorite trip being
canoeing down the Miami River.
Throughout this process we have
been blessed to have community
members step up to help out.
People have donated their time,
running with us, participating in
advisory board meetings, helping
supervise incentive trips as well
as with their resources. Running
shoes, challenge race entries and
monetary donations have all been
made to the program. Through
Expanding horizons we have
been able to take kids on trips,
hold picnics and buy clothes and
school supplies.
This year it was suggested
to us that we take the kids to the
Olympics. Along with our regular
summer activities, we have been
training for the Olympics. We
would love for you to join us for the
entire day or feel free to stay for as
long as your schedule allows. We
would like to make it a special day
for the kids and also recognize all
of the people who work with and
support the kids and the things that
the Court and Expanding Horizons
try to accomplish. We thank you
for everything you do and hope to
see you at the Olympics!

The OLYMPIC &
BASEBALL CARDS
I will definitely miss the
coverage of the Olympics that
will soon disappear from T V.
With all the events happening
at all the varying menus I am
sure it was a difficult decision
as what to include and exclude,
but the most mundane Olympic
daytime television offering was
far superior to anything I could
find on the other channels. I
would be happy, however to offer
my suggestions concerning sports
that were included and excluded
from this years Olympics. I
enjoyed shooting my BB gun
when I was an elementary kid,
but to win an Olympic medals
for shooting a air rifle and pistol
at targets 30 feet away just
seems a little inappropriate when
the entertaining team sports of
womens softball and mens
baseball do not qualify. Are rugby
and air guns a more worldwide
sport than baseball and softball?
Volleyball, both the game played
on the beach and in the gym makes
for interesting television. The next
summer Olympics game will be
held in Rio Deganaro and the sun
and temperature should allow
the ladies to play the two women
game in their bikinis rather than
all that clothes, not that I really
care what they ware. It also seems
understandable when a ladies
volleyball team scores a point and
spontaneously executes a group
hug, but watching six big hairy
men on teams doing the same up
to 75 times during a match does
not seem quire as appropriate
It appears to be one of those
hidden treasure stories with quick
riches that is going to turn out well
for all concerned. It is also a good
story because it happened close to
home in Defiance, Ohio not some
where in California. Carl Hench, a
baseball fan, owned a meat store
in Defiance and passed away some
60 to 70 years ago. His unmarried
daughter lived in the home place
until last October when she passed
and left the home and contents
to her 20 nieces and nephews.
When cleaning the attic boxes
of old baseball cards were found
and many cards were in mint
condition. Recently an auction of
30 cards brought $565,322. That
meant approximately. $28,266
before taxes, auction fees, etc.,
for 20 relatives. Not so much to
change ones life style or solicit
freeloaders, but about enough to
buy a new car or take a first class
vacation courtesy of your old aunt.
Actually there are enough cards
left for several more auctions
during the next couple years. One
estimate has the total value of the
remaining cards being $3,000,000
and each kid is going to be
receiving a few more five figure
checks in the mail. Perhaps they
should consider doing something
special for the next family reunion
like taking the Grand Tour of
Europe or perhaps taking a tour
of major league baseball parks and
thank the old man who must have
loved the game

ROSSBURG, OH (Aug. 2) -
Through its special event status
versus a weekly racing series
venue, Eldora Speedway has the
unique ability to mix up their
menu of events throughout the
season and cater to many different
demographics with a variety of
race meets and promotions.
Such is the upcoming Office
Depot Family Fun Night on
Saturday, August 11, which is a
sharp contrast from the recently
completed month of high-profile
national events and huge prize
money. The tripleheader program
will highlight the UMP DIRTcar
Modifieds and Eldora Stock Cars,
along with the MMSA Mini Sprints,
who will be making their first-ever
appearance on the historic Eldora
.500-mile clay oval.
While the action on the track
remains intense, as the drivers
chase for valuable points towards
the championship title, the premise
of the evening is focused on fun;
from start to finish.
The point chase for the two
local divisions is heating up.
Rob Williams and Ryan Sutter
are deadlocked at 157 points in
the Modified pursuit, as each
hunt for their first-ever track
title. Under the new tie-breaker
in place this year, Williams would
garner the championship based
upon his feature win June 30. In
the Stock Car class, three-time
champion Barney Craig holds on
to a slim three point margin over
another former champion, Shawn
Phillippi.
Kicking off the evening will be
a huge autograph session within
the fan zone from 4:30 5:30
p.m. The popular session allows
everyone to personally greet the
drivers that will be racing that
night and get a close-up look at the
cars that will take to the track at
6:30.
Prior to race time, other
activities for the younger children
include inflatable bouncers and
balloon twisting clowns, along
with giveaway items from Office
Depot.
When the spotlight returns to
the race track, the three divisions
will battle it out in a full program
of competition that includes
preliminary heat races, B-Features
and the concluding A-Features.
Closing out the night will
be another one of the gigantic
fireworks extravaganzas that
Eldora has become known for in
recent years.

children 12 years of age and younger

4) -- The chase for the famed
globed trophy, the most cherished
hardware in dirt Late Model racing,
is officially on! Entry blanks
for the 42
nd
annual World 100 at
Eldora Speedway, to be contested
over the weekend of September
7 & 8, have been finalized. Some
exciting twists have been added to
the time-honored event; including
an enhanced format, increased
opportunities for competitors,
increased prize money and
increased contingencies.
Coming off the success of the
Dirt Late Model Dream by Ferris
Commercial Mowers format,
the World 100 will incorporate
qualifying features on Friday
night. The traditional two rounds of
single lap time trial runs will lock
the quickest 84 cars into Saturdays
six heat races; while the balance
will line up into one of three 20-lap
qualifying features; guaranteeing
fans Friday night racing.
Those features carry a lot of
weight and importance. At stake
in each one is a $1,000 paycheck
to the victor, starting berths in
Saturdays heat races for the top
12 finishers and valuable points
towards the UMP DIRTcar National
Championship.
Saturdays 15-lap heat races
will continue to be lined up via
an inversion determined by a
spin of the infamous Eldora
Wheel of Misfortune, with the
top three finishers advancing to
the $45,000-to-win World 100.

in each heat
will be lined up into one of two
B-Features, with the top five
from each of those advancing into
the World 100. Two provisional
positions for the quickest two cars
from time trials that did not advance
through their heat race will make
for 30 starters in the 100-lap chase
around Eldoras famed .500 clay
oval.
The B-Feature Scrambles,
which made their debut at the Dirt
Late Model Dream, will also be
incorporated into the World 100.
At the end of each of the advertised
20-lap chases, the five advancing
cars will pull into the pits, with the
remainder of the cars relining into
a 5-lap chase for $1,000 and UMP
DIRTcar National Championship
points.
Contingency awards posted
by sponsoring companies include
$1,000 to the quickest qualifier
(CM Graphics), a transmission to
the first driver not advancing from
B-Feature #1 (Bert Transmission)
and a professional seat system to
the first driver not advancing from
B-Feature #2 (ButlerBuilt). The
winners of each B-Feature and the
World 100 will receive four springs
(Eibach Springs) and the media
vote for the Best Appearing Car has
a $1,000 bonus (DirtonDirt.com).
Four shocks (Integra Shocks) will
be awarded in a unique twist via
random draw of those entrants
travelling to the World 100 with an
open trailer; and lap money will be
awarded to the top three positions
in each sponsored lap of the World
100.

While biking the alleys of
Coldwater I photographed several
hidden homes and gardens that
are not viewed from the main
streets. A Chronicle reader put
me onto the tree house that looks
like the house preceded the large
branches of the tree as though
the tree naturally grew through
the windows. What luck a child
that lives here to have their own
hideaway with private entrance
and ladder steps. It made me
smile all the way home. I will
be on the lookout for more tree
houses as I travel the alleys.
Another example of a showcase
backyard incorporates a striking
fireplace and luscious flowers and
green landscaping. Things that
caught my eye were the curved
shape of the pavers, always a good
addition to a garden. Flowering
thyme edges the brick area making
a buffer to keep in the mulch and
soil on a rainy day. Color, texture
and motion are all present in the
garden along with several trees.
Even with this summers draught
here is evidence that a beautiful
garden can still be obtained. I
highly recommend alley riding
for the treats and treasures that are
uncovered along the way.

State of the Heart Hospices

annual Camp BEARable
for grieving children recorded
the nonprofit agencys largest
number in attendance at the
camp which was held July 13-15
at the Spiritual Center of Maria
Stein. Sixty-four young people
attended the camp which is free
and is open to any youth needing
help dealing with grief. Children
from Indiana and Ohio attended
the camp.
In the years since the camp
has been in existence 484 youth
have attended and benefited from
the experience at camp, stated
Marlene Black, State of the
Heart Bereavement Specialist
and camp director. The camp is
open to any youth, age six to 15
and there need be no association
with hospice care.
We had young people
in attendance that had lost
siblings or parents to suicide
and homicide, and parents and
grandparents who had died in
auto accidents or natural death,
Black explained. Of the 64
attending, only seven had any
association with hospice care,
she pointed out.
Black said that this years
camp with a record number
presented State of the Heart staff
with the challenge of finding
enough specially trained adult
buddies for all of the youth.
The week before camp, we
had 14 young people sign up.
Fortunately, many of our State of
the Heart staff came forward and
volunteered to help as buddies.
This was a tremendous show of
support for the youth and the
camp experience.
A popular annual attraction
for the young people is a
display of cars from Forts
Street Car Classics Club from
Fort Recovery. This year, the
car club not only brought cars
to camp for the youngsters to
look at and even ride in, the
club also donated $300 to Camp
BEARable.
On hand to present the check
to Ted Bauer, executive director
of State of the Heart was Jack
Jutte, president of the car club
and a long-time supporter of
the camp. Sadly, Jutte died the
following week.
He really enjoyed the camp
and bringing the cars, stated
Black. Even though he was
not feeling well, he felt it was
important enough to attend the
camp. He felt strongly about
helping kids. That was just the
kind of man he was; he was
always there to help and was a
very caring individual.
Camp BEARable provides a
safe environment for the young
people, Black explained. They
are there with their peers and
with adults they trust. For many,
it is the first time they have
opened up about how they feel
about the loss of a loved one.
She added, The youth leave
camp having learned things
that will help them for the rest
of their lives. While they may
not realize it at the time, they are
learning valuable coping skills.
Bauer attended the camp for
the first time and was a buddy to
two young teens. I experienced
firsthand the value of camp
and the great resource it is for
our community, he said. We
are definitely committed to
continuing camp and helping
young people who need help
dealing with grief and loss.
