FAIR 2012

Kids set to strut their stuff at fair

Youth will fill the barns at the fairgrounds with animals ranging from cavies to goats to steers
TERESA MIDDLETON For The News-Review very August hundreds of 4-Hers around Douglas County spend a week at fair showcasing the projects they have worked on. Hands-on learning is 4-Hs motto and what better way for children to learn than by doing? They get a wonderful sense of accomplishment and responsibility when they complete something they have worked on and are able to display it for others to enjoy. When the public views the 4-H exhibits at fair, what they are seeing is the culmination of months of work, effort and care that the youth has invested in their project whether it is an article of clothing or an animal project. We hope that the public enjoys viewing the exhibits as much as the youth had while doing them. Many members will be filling the barns with their animal projects they have been raising. This year 4-H members are bringing 104 beef projects and 179 swine projects. Both 4-H and FFA members will be participating in Rotarys Market Auction on Friday night with 85 market steers and 171 market hogs slated for auction. Rounding out the large animal projects are 14 dairy cattle and 84 horses. Overflowing barns are a nice problem to have to deal with. It shows that youth are willing to take on projects that require work and dedication and they are proud to show the public what they have been able to accomplish.

Theres expected to be 171 market hogs presented by 4-H and FFA members at this years Rotary Market Auction that is scheduled for Friday evening. Kids have been working with their swine animals since around April 1. Steers will also be featured during Fridays auction.
MICHAEL SULLIVAN/ News-Review file photos

Between the 150 sheep and 50 goat entries, the sheep barn will offer a variety of breeds for the public viewing. The small animal barn will be hopping with 144 rabbits and cavies (guinea pigs) and 104 poultry exhibits. Small animals are a good place for young 4H members to gain experience and awareness of what it means to be responsible for an More than 100 animal. They are also years fair. good projects for youth that may not have the land to raise the larger animals. Forty-three dogs will be participating with their human 4-H members in such competitions as showmanship, obedience and agility during fair week. Over 800 static exhibits will be displayed in the Exhibit Building as well as table setting and food competitions, robotic demonstrations and public presentations. There will also be a tractor exhibit and a chick incubator exhibit, with the chicks sched-

poultry exhibits will be on display at this uled to start hatching Wednesday. We invite you to check out the Douglas County 4-H Fair Premium Book for the schedules of shows and competitions during the week. Thank you to all who support the youth of our county. Teresa Middleton is the 4-H Education Program Assistant at OSU Extension Service of Douglas County. She can be reached by email teresa.middleton@oregonstate.edu or by phone at 541-672-4461.
