PREFACE
This handbook was prepared by Standards Australia in consultation with the Nation Office for the Information Economy (NOIE) (now the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts), project subcontractors Red Wahoo and an industry based advisory panel. It is an historical record of the outputs of two projects conducted by the project team which developed a national e-business framework, registry and toolkit concepts, collectively known as BizDex. A working group managed by Standards Australia, consisting of representatives from the vendor, service provider, government agencies, standards and end-user communities provided strategic direction and oversight for the projects.

These concepts were further demonstrated in a further project in which a large buyer in the wheat industry automated the grain ticket business process between its enterprise management software application (SAP) and an office management software application (Quicken) used by many of the 40,000 small businesses it trades with. It successfully demonstrated how the BizDex infrastructure could be used to connect a trading community. This document forms part of a series consisting of: HB 310BizDexA framework for registry operations. HB 311B2B registry service Detailed specification. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
BizLink, previously known as the B2B integration toolkit provides an interface for small business applications to comply with the national framework for B2B interoperability. This is known as the BizDex Framework and is based upon international standards so the BizLink should be re-usable across any industry for both national and international trading. A fundamental requirement is that BizLink will be available free of royalty charges so that application vendors can feel confident to embed the product into their applications and pass the benefits to their SME customers at low cost. This document is the second document in the toolkit stream and it defines the detailed functional specifications for the toolkit. The document is divided into three main sections: (a)

Introduction: Places this document in context with others in the project scope. Overview and approach: States the high level functional specifications for BizLink, defines some positioning with respect to existing and developing standards, and outlines development strategy. Detailed functional specifications: Describes BizLink technical requirements based on the already mentioned business requirements.

1.1 PROJECT SCOPE The toolkit project is divided into three phases, see Figure 1:

The Design PhaseIn this phase, business requirements are gathered and detailed specifications defined. The primary objective is to develop a confident cost estimate for the build phase. This phase will also deliver a proof of concept toolkit as a demonstration system and a business model for funding of subsequent phases. The Build phaseIn this phase, the production version of the toolkit is built and tested. This phase will also deliver a test framework to support deployment of the toolkit. The Commercialization phaseIn this phase, the toolkit is deployed to end users via a variety of channels (direct download, embedded in vendor applications, etc). Most critically, this phase delivers specific business functionality built into the toolkit. Product vendors and third party service providers can charge their customers for business value built on the toolkit and registry infrastructure.

1.2.3 Required knowledge The reader should be familiar with e-business standards such as ebXML and Web Services. The reader should also be familiar with the background and scope of the BizDex project, which can be found at www.bizdex.com.au. 1.3 ARCHITECTURE OVERVIEW Figure 2 provides an overview of the architecture of BizLink. It provides a distinct separation of functionality for public and private processes and well as being developed with a Component Based Architecture. This means that each box in the diagram is a standalone component with a public interface that can interact with other components.
