INTRODUCTION
This publication documents the history of changes that have taken place in AustralianStandards for structural steel, with specific reference to plate product. All the significantchanges have been listed and, where possible, reasons for such changes are given. As most of these changes are a result of the development of the steel industry in Australia, majordevelopments/plant commissioning in the steel industry are also listed. For the benefit of readers and steel users, the following attachments are included:(a)

Attachment 1
Australian Standards for Structural

Steel
Development

of Australian Steel Industry
This attachment lists in chronological order all the Australian structural steel Standardsand the major developments in the Australian steel industry with emphasis on plateproduct.(b)

Attachment 2

Evolution of Australian Standard for Structural Steel
This attachment shows the relationship and evolution of Australian structural steelStandards in two time periods—(i)

1928 to 1986; and(ii)

1989 to 1997.The attachment has been split in this way because the 1989/1990 edition was a majorrevision (change in direction) and two other Standards (AS 1446 and AS 1594) were alsoincluded in the rehash along with all the other structural steel Standards.(c)

Attachment 3

Australian Structural Steel Plate
Obsolete Grades
This attachment shows the structural steel grades that replaced old grades and grades thatwere added or deleted in the new Standard, and their equivalence.(d)

Attachment 4

Australian Weather-resistant Structural Steel Plate
ObsoleteGrades
This attachment shows the weather-resistant structural steel grades that have replaced oldgrades and grades that were added or deleted in the new Standard, and their equivalence.(e)

Attachment 5

Structural Steel Plate
Equivalent International Grades
This attachment lists the grades from four (ISO, EN, ASTM and JIS) internationalStandards which are equivalent to current Australian/New Zealand structural steel plategrades.
