Commissioner Court?
When Carlos Leon, retired Chief of
Police, suffered a horrendous accident on his Harley-Davidson in 2009, he decided hed had enough. God gave me a second chance and I took it seriously, Leon said. I believe that I died right there at the scene. I remember seeing my father, who was already dead, coming for me to take me wherever he was. But, it didnt happen. I was brought back to life for some reason I feel that God had another purpose for me. Once I mended from my numerous injuries, I became politically involved so that I could continue doing my best to help the city that I love. Leon, who still has one more race to run - on the Nov. 6 general election against Republican Bill Lenderman - was elected as the candidate for the Democratic Party in Pct. 1 of El Pasos County Commissioners Court. He said that if he wins that campaign, he would be proud to be joining a strong force where he hopes to make a difference. He retired as Chief of Police in 2003, having served in law enforcement for 29 years, 4 as Chief. He was highly successful in his tenure, having implemented a Stash House Unit, a program hailed across the nation that helped to stop drugs where they were being stored before shipment. He also helped to create an initiative aimed at eliminating gang activity by filing civil action against gang members, especially the notorious Aztecas. On August 26, 2009, Leon was riding his bike on a New Mexico back-road, Hwy. 28 near Mesilla, when a pickup truck pulled out in front of him. His injuries were so severe that he had to be airlifted to the University Medical Center. In that accident, his first on a motorcycle, he suffered broken bones on both his shoulders, a vertebrae, three ribs and both his arms. For four months, he was helpless in a wheelchair, with his family having to provide for all his needs, including taking him to the bathroom. He was in surgery for seven hours, spent two weeks in intensive care and ten days in a rehab clinic. Ive sworn off bikes, Leon said. I still love them, but, not for me. My mom suffered a stroke following the crash, something from which she never recovered. Leon said he will be in learning mode if he joins the Court in January. I still love bikes, but, I dont want to have to go through another accident like the one I had and put my family through all that suffering. I feel that Im a happy camper. I still have a lot to offer my community. If and when I become a County

have been 18 accidents with zero fatalities. Motorists should also be more aware. For some reason or other, when a motorist sees a bike, somehow, it doesnt register, Leon said. I considered myself a safe driver, and, yet, look what happened to me. Motorists, when they shift lanes, they should look for bikes as well as looking for cars. For bikers and others, always look

both ways before entering a street. One never knows what will be encountered coming in the other direction. People do make mistakes. If and when I get to Commissioners Court, I will dedicate myself to the city and county that I love, dedicate myself to the citizens as I did when I was Chief. Im excited because Im the type of person that never gives up.

Commissioner, I will go into it with an open mind because I will be in learning mode. Commissioners Court is getting good, and, yes, Im in favor of the city working closely with the county. We can accomplish more by working together. Leon, 60, said he has high energy, despite the fact that he has titanium steel all over his body. My key to succeeding on Commissioners Court is that I strongly believe in being inclusive. If I have been successful to some extent in my life its because I know when to keep my mouth shut and listen. El Pasos been good to me. I was born and raised in the Lower Valley, graduated from Ysleta High School. Im fortunate in having my wife, Bonnie, weve been married 35 years. I have three kids, two of them live here in El Paso, and one lives in Houston. Ive been blessed in my life. My strongest advice to bikers is to always wear a helmet, because thats what saved my life. Leon said when he set out for his ride to Mesilla, he realized that he was wearing the wrong helmet, it was larger than the other. I felt lazy to go back and get the smaller helmet, but, you know, now Im glad that I didnt go back for it. The large helmet saved my life. Some bikers, they dont like to wear helmets, they have the attitude that if its my turn to go, Ill just go. But, it doesnt always happen that way. If you survive a crash, you might become a vegetable. Maybe that wont happen, but, to me, the risk is just not worth it. Motorcycle accidents seem to be very common in El Paso. Angelica Becerra, a deputy with the El Paso County Sheriffs Dept., said in 2011 there were 26 accidents involving motorcycles, with two deaths. Thus far in 2012, there

A July with No Complaints

The month of July was very good to us. We experienced below normal temperatures and above normal rainfall (2.39 for the month - .84 above normal). I dont think anyone is complaining. In fact, this past month was a time period that we dont witness too often. We did not have a single day where temperatures were at 100 degrees or more. The hottest day we experienced was 99 and that was the first day of the month. I had a reader ask me how many times, since records were kept, we witnessed a July without triple digits. Below are the times and years, dating back to 1879. You will see that it hasnt happened too many times over the past 110 years or so. I also include the years that we had at least 20 or more days of triple digits for the month.

Great Olympics Moments

I just love the Olympics, dont you? Thus far, this year, there have been two golden moments which have thrilled me. First is the Gold Medal in Gymnastics won by 16-year-old Gabby Douglas. For the first time in history, an African American girl won the overall title with her outstanding performances. She won two gold medals, not just one. She became the first black to win that prestigious award. But, watch out, blacks are superior athletes it wont be long before they dominate that sport, as they dominate many others. I always love to see underdogs win, dont you? Next in outstanding performances were the ones by Michael Phelps he has now won 21 Gold Medals - 17 Gold - in Olympic swimming competition. Hows that for magic. The guy mustve been born to be a fish because he sure swims like one. He glides through the water, with his elongated torso and his longish arms. Hes now won more medals than anyone in Olympics history. Its going to take many years before anyone breaks his record. On another note, I thought the coverage of the Olympics by Azteca 7 was far superior to that of NBC. The announcers were great, the sets fantastic, the sidebars and scenes of England impressive, and, the Medals Count kept us abreast on a daily basis. What a great job, Azteca 7 kudos. In my old age, Ive seen many outstanding moments, frozen passages of time that remind me of the world-class athletes from every country in the world that dare to compete against the very best. One of the first such events were the 1936 Olympics in which Jesse Owens shocked the German contingent, including Adolph Hitler who boasted that his Aryan Supermen would dominate the games in Berlin. Of course, I wasnt privy to Owens record breaking feats because I hadnt been born yet. According to news accounts of the day, however, Hitler refused to shake the hand of Owens because he had been humiliated by someone whom he considered inferior. Hitler not shaking hands with Owens became an international bomb for the Germans. However, German sports writer Sigfried Mischer, wrote in his book about that Olympics that he had seen Hitler and Owens shaking hands. The media, however, did not pick up on that. So, maybe Hitler did or didnt shake his hand, but that was no worse than the fact that the then-President of the United States did not invite any black Gold Medal winners to visit the White House. Owens won Gold in the 100m, the long jump, the 200m and the relay race. Maybe Hitler didnt shake his hand, and, maybe he wasnt invited to the White House. But, his name will resonate around the world, never to be forgotten. Another Olympics that stands out in my mind is the 1960 Olympics in Rome, where then-boxer Cassius Clay won Gold in the LightHeavyweight Division. I was 15 at that time and watched every one of Clays, (now Muhammad Ali) matches. Even then he had his famous Ali Shuffle, a bag of fancy footwork that confused his opponents. Ever the exuberant one, Ali was voted the Mayor of the Olympics Village, becoming one of the most popular athletes in Rome. Later, of course, Ali went on to win the Heavyweight Championship of the World when he defeated the formidable Sonny Liston in 1964. Ali took on all comers, remaining undefeated until Joe Frazier knocked him for a loop. As we all know, however, the great Ali didnt just shine in the ring, he also became a champion for civil rights by defying the powers of the time. He lost his title for refusing to fight in Vietnam, basing his refusal on the fact that he was a conscientious objector due to his religion. Ali became the first Heavyweight to win the title three times. Today, he is saddled with Parkinsons, a disease that has robbed him of his ability to speak, but, to me, he will remain forever young, forever the Champ. In 1968, I was a student at UT El Paso. I was sitting at home, watching the Olympics in Mexico City. Bob Beamon was about to make his recordsetting long jump. As Beamon took off, my t.v. went black. Something happened, and all I could hear was the announcers voice shouting excitedly about Beamons magical leap. Of course, the t.v. came back on and the scene was replayed countless times. But, I missed the original. Talk about fate. Beamon, who had once been a track athlete at UT El Paso, had been suspended by the university because he refused to compete in a track meet at Brigham Young University. Beamon considered that school to harbor racist policies. This is something which I didnt know, but, there you have it. Beamon, on his third jump he had fouled on his first two leaps set the record at 29 feet, 2 inches, a record that stood for 23 years, until Mike Powell broke it in 1991. Thus, for over 100 years, the Olympics have contained drama, athletic feats beyond compare, politics, and, yes, tragedy. Such as the 1972 Olympics held in Munich, Germany when eight Arab commandos infiltrated the Olympic Village, killed two Israeli team members and seized nine others as hostages. Those hostages were killed the next morning in a shootout between terrorists and German police. Oh, yeah, there was also a little matter of the U.S. losing its Gold Medal in basketball to a team from the Soviet Union. The Soviets were illegally given three chances to convert an in-bound pass into the winning basket. The Soviets won 51-50, breaking the U.S. record of having won 62 straight Gold Medals in basketball. The U.S. team refused to accept the Silver Medal. Oh, yes, and lets not forget that matter of Tlatelolco in 1968 Mexico City but, thats another story for another time. For now, lets hope that nothing untoward happens in this Olympiad. Let the athletes play, win or lose. Its still a great world-wide event dont you agree? Sin Fin

Q: I was intrigued by your recent column on decorating with Moroccan style. I've always loved it when there were a lot of different patterns used together (Matisse is my favorite artist). But I'm afraid to try it in my own home. Are there guidelines that would make it easier to put a lot of designs together?

A: There are only three rules you need master to create a successful
mix of patterns, Western-style. 1. All the patterns must have a common color denominator. 2. There should be a discernible difference in the scale of the patterns: large, medium, small. 3. A successful mix includes both geometrics and florals. But that's talking pattern mixes, Western-style. When it comes to the Moroccan way of layering patterns, the rules are slightly different because you're mostly dealing with geometrics. You also have more surfaces to decorate. As author/designer Maryam Montague points out in her colorful, new book ("Marrakesh by Design"), Moroccan floors often wear wall-to-wall patterns. Often, the pattern is on the ceramic tiles, for which the region is famous. However, in the bedroom we show here, borrowed from her book, the cement floor has been stencil-painted (by the author herself). The interlocking design underscores the other patterns in the room, including the red carpet that speaks to the red in the overall floral pattern on the bed throw. Here, the walls and ceiling are plainly painted. Other rooms in Maryam's vibrant book have lively tiled walls especially wainscothigh and dramatic ceilings, often stencil-painted in exotic colors.

How to Become a Great Home Cook

PICTURE FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY

The best way to become a great home cook is to learn proper techniques and then to practice. Learning some of the best secrets from professional chefs can really help, too. Here, for your cooking pleasure, are secrets from the pros that will help you avoid making five critical mistakes.

you season and taste as you go, your food will taste better. Always do a final taste just before serving to assure that your seasonings are still right on.

EXHAUSTED CAREGIVERS MUST GIVE THEMSELVES A BREAK

DEAR ABBY: I think what "End of My Rope" (May 3) may have failed to say is that she's tired of sacrificing her own life to care for her ill-tempered, terminally ill husband. Harsh as this may seem, it's a fact. I have been caring for my father for eight years. He's suffering from severe dementia and is now an invalid. I, too, provide him round-the-clock care. My suggestion to "End" would be to talk to a respite facility about giving her a "vacation" from her husband. I do this with my father twice a year. His appreciation for the care I give him increases greatly after being in a "home." He goes for only one week at a time, but it's long enough for me to miss him and for him to realize I'm not so bad after all. "End" is overwhelmed and angry right now because her husband expects so much from her. This isn't his fault. It is normal for someone with brain cancer. If no one else is stepping up to give her the breaks she so desperately needs, then she must consider her own well-being. She must do what her heart tells her. She has my sympathy and respect for what she has done so far. -- BEEN THERE, STILL DOING THAT DEAR BEEN THERE: Thank you for writing. Many readers responded, offering suggestions gained from personal experience. Their comments: DEAR ABBY: You gave "End of My Rope" helpful information about hospice care for her husband in their home, but more services are available from most hospices. In addition to doctors, nurses, home health aides and volunteers, services are provided by chaplains and social workers who offer essential emotional and spiritual support to dying patients and their families. The hospice that employs me as chaplain also provides bereavement counseling to families by professional grief counselors -- at no charge -- for a year after the patient's passing. -- HONORED TO BE A HOSPICE CHAPLAIN

DEAR ABBY by Abigail Van Buren

Use common sense.

Cooking is not an exact science. Unless you're baking, which is an exact science, you have to find a balance between your recipe and reality. Oven temperatures vary, or your electric cook top may not heat your saute pan as quickly or evenly as the gas range used by the recipe writer. Check your food periodically. If it is browning faster than the recipe indicates, turn it. Then, lower the heat. Recipe-writers cannot anticipate every situation. They rely on good cooks to use their common sense to interpret and implement recipes.

Read the recipe. Home cooks invariably make the mistake of reading the recipe as they go, instead of reading it before they start. A quick read before you get caught up in the cooking will make it less likely that you'll add ingredients in the wrong order, leave something out or do anything else that may compromise your dish. Think of your recipe as an instruction manual for your meal, and your first instruction is to read the instructions. Start in a hot pan. Unless
your recipe gives you specific instructions to do otherwise, always give your pan time to heat up before adding any food. Heat encourages food to release whatever moisture it has. Adding food to a pan that's hot creates an instant seal around the food to keep all the moisture (and flavor) inside. In a warm pan, your food will lose its moisture and you'll find your chicken breast or mushrooms stewing in their own juices. This is not good. A hot

pan should give you a sizzle when you add food to it. If you don't hear the sizzle, don't be afraid to pull the food out while you wait for the temperature to rise.

DEAR ABBY: I suggest "End" call all of her husband's friends and family. Many people offer help in times like this, but they don't know how. Schedule assignments for sitting with her husband, preparing meals, running errands, assisting with getting him in and out of the car on appointment days, or any tasks that need to be done. Loved ones will appreciate being asked to help in tangible ways. I urge her to take a drive or go out to lunch and leave the caretaking to a trusted friend for an hour or two. Her husband does not realize the enormous burden she carries. When she's at her lowest, I also recommend a simple prayer asking for strength. -- LOUISE IN BRADENTON, FLA. DEAR ABBY: Our dad was ill for a number of years with Alzheimer's. We are a large family of siblings, but most lived away from our hometown. Though we were fortunate to have in-home care, the day-to-day management fell to me and one of my sisters. As the oldest, I took it upon myself to write a straightforward letter to my siblings regarding Dad's condition and the progression of his illness. Then I assigned consecutive weekends to each one, telling them this was their weekend to come, spend time with Dad and help with his care. I said they were free to trade weekends among themselves, but the expectation was that Dad would have his family with him every weekend until he passed. It worked pretty well, with most siblings taking the responsibility seriously and as a chance to express their love and gratitude to Dad in his last days. -- DANIEL IN VISALIA, CALIF. DEAR ABBY: Did you know you do not need a physician to refer you to hospice? You can SELF-refer. However, the doctor must certify eligibility so care can begin. -- BRONX M.D. ** Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Don't over-tend the food. Once you add the food

to the pan, put the utensils down and step away. This doesn't mean you should leave the room. You still need to watch the food, but constant flipping, turning, stirring or other motions prevent the food from cooking properly, unless the recipe specifically calls for constant stirring. By over-tending, you're actually extending the cooking time, and you run the risk of altering the food's texture and color by moving it around too much.

Cooking is an art that requires practice, common sense and skill.

Forget the talk about cellphones causing brain tumors, which if you listen to physicists, is impossibility because the phones don't generate enough energy to break the DNA bonds necessary to cause mutations.

Hey, Its Your Leg Calling

No, the real issue is "phantom vibration syndrome." If you habitually carry your phone in your pocket, you probably know what I'm talking about: You feel your phone vibrating against your leg, only to realize it wasn't or, even weirder, isn't even in your pocket. The experience appears to be quite common. A recent survey of undergraduates at Indiana and Purdue universities found that 89 percent of students reported feeling the sensation at least once. On average, they felt the nonexistent buzzing

once every two weeks, though some say it occurred much more often. Researchers aren't sure how to explain what's happening. It could be a misinterpretation of sensory input, a form of social contagion or some kind of hallucination. One factor that seems to play a role is how much emotional importance heavy cellphone users place on their text messages. The greater the import, the more often they feel phantom buzzing.

Behavioral scientists say two personality types tend to be most sensitive to the "syndrome": Extroverts who check their phones a lot because keeping in touch with friends is a big part of their lives. And neurotics who worry about relationships and status and so put greater emphasis upon any communications they receive.

Crucifers Heal You! Canola Congeals You! Why Nutrition Rules

Real food heals. Some popular pharmaceuticals kill. Crazy, you say? Ahem ...
here's a solid fact: Every year, over 125,000 Americans die as a side effect of taking a legal drug. No one has ever keeled over from too much cauliflower, watermelon or olive oil. your nutritional profile is to get tested and discuss your blood chemistry, line by line, with an expert who can prescribe food real food first, supplements second to get you back in balance. Carmen Fusco is one of those experts a nutrition professor, clinician and research scientist with a very big brain and a very low tolerance for healing patients with drugs. She started her career back in the '70s, teaching pharmacology. Once she realized the destructive side effects and misleading claims of many drugs, she switched her allegiance to healing with real food focusing on "the nutritional aspects of aging" and that's her specialty now. That's why I went to see her, and it turned out to be a mindblowing experience. I was Carmenized! And you should be, too if not by Fusco, who lives in New York and refuses to be cloned, then by a gifted nutritionist of your own careful choosing. B6, trying to keep up with her dazzling display of micronutrient minutia. When you consult with your own nutritionist, bring a tape recorder or friend to take notes.) She's also big on low-sodium tamari, garlic, mustard and oregano to flavor food. Go light on salt, and if you are one of millions trying to regulate blood sugar, season with pure cinnamon.

A cook, she also offered up a tantalizing recipe for mixing it with chopped celery, red onion, a little real mayo and turmeric. She adores turmeric! Why? ...)

Real food not the fake processed foods filled with nasty chemicals and naughty additives prevents disease, too. Real food also gives you sustainable energy, versus the Red Bull family of energy shots that later leave you sleeping on the subway.
Even if you flunked biology and think the Krebs cycle is a new kind of adult threewheeler, you can appreciate that every cell of your body and brain works or doesn't work according to the nutrients it does or doesn't get. It's a delicate balance, and if you don't get the mix of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and acid-to-alkaline just right, you get sick. Sometimes very sick think heart disease, cancer, diabetes and more. Last week acting responsibly, as your most personal trainer I explained why having a gifted nutritionist on your health care team is more important than teeth brightening. Strapping it on. For evening this fall, the party shoes you are going to want are strappy high heels. Think T-straps and ankle straps. Mortgage Rates Make This Best Time to Buy or Refinance

He (or she) who hesitates is lost! It's an old saying, and right now it applies to the housing market. Yes, the economic headlines are still gloomy, many are unemployed and foreclosures are actually rising. But paradoxically, those obvious facts are creating one of the best home-buying opportunities in history. Not only have prices fallen by 30 percent or more in many locations, mortgage rates last week hit 60-year lows. The average rate on a 30-year fixedrate mortgage fell below 3.5 percent for the first time since the 1950s. The average rate on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage is now 2.8 percent. Combine low rates and low prices, and you have an incredible opportunity. But for most people, that opportunity will be obvious only in hindsight. We are all conditioned to remember only the recent past. And, for housing, that recent past is scary. Gone are the stories of profits made on the sale of a home. They have been replaced with eviction notices and lost equity. Just as no tree grows to the sky, no market continues in one direction forever. But only a few people have the discipline to step back, gain perspective and take the risk of going against the obvious current trend. Owning your own home is still a centerpiece of the American dream. It was the dream of the pioneers who took wagon trains west, seeking their own land. It was the dream for the immigrants who arrived on our shores. It was the dream of the post-World War II generation who built the suburbs. It was the city condo dream for a generation of yuppies. And home ownership will once again be the dream for the next generation of American prosperity. It's just that the benefits of building equity with a tax-deductible mortgage are less apparent now than they appeared to be just a decade ago, when homebuyers never dreamed that home prices could fall. That fear of losing money on a home is one of the factors making this the time to buy if you have good credit and a down payment. Fear helps push prices down, creating the opportunity for future gains. I have always advised that your house is not your "piggy bank." But properly financed and under the right circumstances, the single-family home will once again become the foundation of middle-class financial security. And for those who already own a home, and may have refinanced in the past, it's time to do another refinancing and lock in these record low rates. The rest of the world has been sending money to the presumed safety of the U.S. dollar, helping the Fed keep rates low. But if Europe survives as a single economic unit, or if American debt problems become overwhelming, you can be sure that dollar fears will push rates higher. Whether you're getting a mortgage for a new purchase or considering a refinancing, it pays to be creative and to compare rates and deals online. No longer is your hometown bank the automatic place to start although you should definitely check with your local lenders to see if they can match the best rates online.

the savage truth on Money by terry savage

The place to start looking is Bankrate.com. They'll

quote for both new purchases and refinancings, both 30-year and 15-year fixed-rate deals. You'll input your city and state, so they can give you quotes from lenders who can actually do your deal. And they offer quotes on mortgages with either 20 percent or 5 percent down. (The latter are more difficult to obtain.) You'll be asked to input your credit score, as well. Bankrate.com stands behind these quotations, so you know you're not being offered a teaser deal. It makes absolutely no sense to take an adjustable-rate mortgage now. The slightly lower rate is not worth the upside exposure if inflation fears should return. The whole idea of making this purchase now is to lock in this financial opportunity. Be sure to compare deals by using the APR annual percentage rate, which includes the effect of points you might pay. In fact, since banks are flush with money to lend to those with good credit, you should avoid paying any points on your mortgage and refinancing.

Remember that property taxes and insurance will add to your monthly payment. You can likely get a better deal if you purchase homeowners insurance, paying the bills yourself using an automatic debit system. Here's a tip from my mortgage experts, one that I had never heard of before. You can do a deal with "negative points." What's that? A very creative way to avoid out-of-pocket expenses for a new survey, title search and appraisal. You know that you can pay points to "buy down" your mortgage rate. People have been doing that for years, but it makes no sense in today's low rate environment. "Negative points" is just the reverse. After you do your deal and are told how much you must pay upfront in closing costs and fees,

you can offer to pay a slightly higher rate on your mortgage to avoid those out-of-pocket costs! And that could make enough of a difference to give you a larger down payment or make refinancing affordable. Sure, there's bad news about the economy, jobs and housing. But America will recover and you'll wish you had taken advantage of a once-in-a-generation opportunity. That's the Savage Truth. BEFORE SON JOINS FOOTBALL TEAM, HE MUST KNOW HEALTH RISKS

Q: Our son wants to try out for the football team this year, but I'm concerned. He's only a freshman, and we have friends whose sons have sustained fairly serious injuries playing high school football. Should we forbid him from trying out? Jim: There's no denying football is a rough sport. I should know -- my own high school football career ended with a broken collarbone! And there's a significant amount of research suggesting that broken bones are just the tip of the iceberg. According to a 2010 New York Times article, football accounts for 22 percent of all concussions among 8- to 19-year-olds. In fact, 27 percent of football players ages 12 through 17 have had a least one concussion.
And the sport only gets more brutal when you from trying out for the team. Football is a great sport that teaches kids teamwork and helps them get in shape. At this point, the dangers of college and pro football are not a factor regarding your son, and probably never will be. However, the "win at all costs" mentality that pervades professional sports can trickle down to the high school level as well. You -- and your son -- simply need to be aware of the risks involved. Most injuries will have no long-term impact, so long as they're allowed to heal properly. Talk to the coach, and make sure he doesn't push his players back out on the field too soon after being hurt. Playing while injured isn't just tough -- it's stupid. ** Continues on page 15

move to the college and professional levels. Researchers have identified a serious condition in some NFL players called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E. It can develop after repeated concussions and other trauma, resulting in serious depression and lack of impulse control. This condition may affect college-level players, too. Despite these alarming facts, I think it could be a mistake to prohibit your son

Conquer the Galaxy in 'Endless Space'

DEVELOPER: Amplitude Studios PUBLISHER: Amplitude Studios SYSTEM: Windows 7/Vista/XP PRICE: $29.99 ESRB RATING: Teen REVIEW RATING: 4.0 stars (out of 5) Turn-based strategy games based on history are quite popular, but those that explore the limitless boundaries of space are few and far between. That's why I was pleasantly surprised at the nearly unlimited number of options found in the indie title, "Endless Space." For once, a video game lives up to its name! Players begin this 4X game (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate) by choosing one of eight races to use in their exploration of the galaxy. If none of the races suit the player, he or she can create one of their own. Then it's time to use diplomacy, economics, war or a combination of these tactics to find new

planets to colonize, new resources to ravage and new technologies to research. Unlike some strategy games, "Endless Space" lets players customize nearly everything, starting with the winning conditions. This game also offers a tech tree that branches out in four distinct directions. Players quickly realize that putting all their points into one category will hamper others, like having a strong military with weak economic conditions. As a result, carefully balancing out the tech tree can mean the difference between being a beloved intergalactic ruler and an insidious space emperor! Additional customization comes from creating a battleship and outfitting it with strong armor and a plethora of powerful weapons. It's also possible to hire hero characters as fleet admirals that earn experience and gain new levels. Their unique attributes can have a significant effect on game play. All of these options may sound daunting, but the clean and intuitive control scheme helps make this game more enjoyable. Since nothing is more than a few menus away, micromanaging entire fleets is less bothersome. There's also a handy help system that's actually helpful! Continues on next page

FOCUS ON THE FAMILY ...

Continued from page 13 Q: I have a 15-year-old daughter who's very artistic and melodramatic. Lately, she's started acting odd -- dressing in black, staying in her room a lot and avoiding the family. Is this normal teenage behavior, or should I be concerned? Juli: Yes, it's normal teenage behavior, and yes, you should be concerned. The adolescent years often include the behaviors your daughter is exhibiting: mood swings, withdrawal and going through "fads" with music and clothing. Just because these behaviors are normal doesn't mean they shouldn't cause concern. Teenagers lack both life experience and the ability to think through consequences of their choices. This leaves them vulnerable to highrisk behaviors, including drug and alcohol use, sexual activity and self-injury. Parents of teens should be especially attentive when they notice drastic changes in behavior. For example, a straight-A student begins neglecting his schoolwork or a social teen suddenly doesn't want to talk to her friends. While your daughter is pulling away from you, your strategy should be to "lean into" her. It's critical that you work at connecting with her, even if she seems to resist. Find ways to spend time with her, such as running errands or going to the mall. Ask openended questions about school, her friends and the music she likes. Is there anything going on in her life -family conflict, a breakup, or even problems with a bully -- that may be causing her pain above and beyond the normal adolescent experience? You mentioned that she's artistic. Perhaps her drawings, poetry or other forms of expression can be a window into what she's feeling. While a certain amount of moodiness is normal in teens, if you see consistent themes of despair or thoughts of selfinjury or suicide, it's time to contact someone who specializes in teen issues to help your daughter weather the storm. ** (Jim Daly is president of Focus on the Family, host of the Focus on the Family radio program, and a husband and father of two. 'Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD'

DEVELOPER: Robomoto PUBLISHER: Activision SYSTEM: Microsoft XBLA (PSN) PRICE: $15 ESRB RATING: Teen REVIEW RATING: 2.5 stars (out of 5) As a former skateboarding enthusiast, I was thrilled when the "Tony Hawk Pro Skater" series dropped into the video game realm. The first title revolutionized the skateboarding genre, and the second one features excellent level design. Now the two have been combined and upgraded into one kickflip-filled package called "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD," but this remake falls short. Instead of simply combining the two games and upgrading the visuals, the developers have added bits and pieces of both games to create a lackluster title. For starters, only seven levels are included, three from the

first game and four from the second. This means many people will be disappointed because their favorite levels are missing. Also, there's no skate park editor, and the couch-side multiplayer modes are out in favor of online multiplayer only. I remember struggling to get used to the controls for the original "THPS," but at least it was easier than landing tricks in real life. Ironically, I have now grown accustomed to the superior "Skate" control scheme, so I'm forced to learn the "THPS" controls a second time. This is difficult enough by itself, but the new developer hasn't accurately recreated the physics of the original game, and the movement

seems a bit slow. On the other hand, some of the new features are very welcome! For example, the new skating modes (Hawkman and Big Head Survival), new objectives and the addition of modern skaters like Nyjah Huston and Tony Hawk's son. Of course, the HD visuals make this game much more enjoyable because no one could stand the blocky visuals of the original. "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD" may not be a great remake, but at least they left the awesome soundtrack intact!

PURRFECT HEALTH
Cats arent small dogs; they have their own care needs
By Dr. Marty Becker
Universal Uclick When you are reading about different cat breeds or checking the personality descriptions of cats at a shelter, you may come across some that are described as doglike. And its true that some cats, like dogs, will follow you around, play fetch or go for walks on leash. But if you want to take better care of your cat, the last thing you should be doing is treating him like a dog.

Pets, children often share toys

Those who think the line between pets and children has become a little fuzzy in recent
years may not be cheered by a new line of pet toys that is made to meet safety standards for children. SafeMade Pet Products meet guidelines to protect from choking, sharp edges and other potential hazards, and tests products for lead and phthalates. All of its bowls pass federal guidelines for food-safe dishware. But while it may seem like overkill, you only have to think about how often pet toys and dishes end up in the hands (and mouths) of small children to see that its not a bad idea at all for both pets and people. Want more talking pets? Andrew Grantham, creator of the Ultimate Dog Tease video (quotable line: The maple kind. Yeah.), has collaborated with the American Pet Products Associations Pets Add Life campaign for a new series of comedy videos. Theyre at youtube.com/petsaddlife.

Their nutritional needs are different. Cats are what

biologists call obligate carnivores. That means they must have meat in their diet to survive. Lots of meat. While dogs can exist on a diet that contains large amounts of grains, cats need meat protein to be at the top of their game. Meat contains a nutrient called taurine that is essential for heart and eye health and normal cell, muscle and skeletal function. Cats cant synthesize taurine on their own, so they must get it from their diet. Cats also have other nutritional requirements that vary from those of dogs, such as the type of vitamin A they can use. Thats why you should never feed your cat the same food you give your dog.

Giving treats to pets can sabotage any effort at taking weight off them.
Dog Fancy magazine recently made the point that one premium pigs ear treat is the equivalent of a person drinking six 12-ounce sodas. And that typical dog biscuit? Its equivalent to two double-stuffed fudge cookies. With half of all pets overweight or obese, its time to look at those treats. Since dogs can count but not judge size very well, break treats into tiny pieces and give those gradually, or substitute low-calorie treats, such as baby carrots or mini rice cakes. Dr. Marty Becker and Gina Spadafori

Cats outnumber dogs as pets in the United States and Canada, but you wouldnt know it by looking in any veterinary hospital.

The way cats express pain is different. Well, its not just different.
Its almost nonexistent. Its much easier to notice pain in a dog because we tend to interact with dogs directly. We take them on walks and we see whether theyre limping, for instance, or moving more slowly. With cats, its much more difficult to see the changes in mobility that signal injury or arthritis. Unless you happen to see your cat while hes doing his business in the litter box, you might not notice that hes having more difficulty squatting or no longer does that Rockettes-high kick to cover his scat. You might not notice that he doesnt jump to the top of the bookcase anymore, and you might like it that he no longer jumps on the kitchen counter. You just notice that hes sleeping more and, hey, thats what cats do, isnt it? Because cats are both predator and prey, they make a point of hiding any kind of weakness. They know instinctively that displaying pain puts them at risk from other predators, so they do their

best to mask it. That works to their disadvantage when it comes to veterinary care. The signs that a cat is in pain are so subtle that most people miss them unless they are keen observers of their cats.

Their physiology is different. Cats metabolize drugs differently than dogs or people do. Its very dangerous to give a cat the same drug that you or I or the dog next door might take, even if its for the same type of problem. Take pain, for instance. Ive seen clients kill their cats by going to the medicine chest and giving their cats aspirin or acetaminophen. The same holds true for parasite treatments. Never apply a flea or tick treatment or shampoo made for dogs to your cat. Always call your veterinarian first to ask if a particular medication is safe for your cat and at what dose.

Cats dont take care of themselves, and they need to see the veterinarian. Its a mystery
to me why people are so much less likely to provide veterinary care to their cats than to their dogs. Cats are the most popular pets in America, yet veterinarians are seeing a decline in veterinary visits for cats. Thats a shame because cats need and deserve great veterinary care to ensure that they live long, happy, healthy lives. Cats may be intelligent and independent, but they cant doctor themselvesat least not yet. Providing your cat with regular veterinary care is a good investment, and its one of the responsibilities you owe your cat when you bring him into your life.

Children and pets often share toys and even dishes may change hands ... and mouths.

CRYSTAL CASTLES
S
ince forming in the summer of 2004, Crystal Castles, the Toronto-based duo of Ethan Fawn and Alice Glass have amassed a cult following through their uncompromising and intense delivery, a slew of limited edition singles, and shows packed solely from word of mouth. Their music has sold out almost instantly; they have toured extensively in the UK, Europe, and North America with artists such as the Klaxons and Metric, and remixed songs for Bloc Party and the Klaxons, among others. Crystal Castles have attracted much attention from those trying to pigeonhole the band as leaders for such media-hyped subgenres as 8-bit and nu-rave, however their nihilist aesthetic and diverse body of work suggests their intentions and potential are worth much more. The following is a selection of frequently asked questions that the band would like to clarify, of which their answers are completely sincere and not contrived.

HISTORY
Q: How did they meet? Alice (of the noise band Fetus Fatale) and Ethan (of garage-metal band Jakarta) met reading to the blind (it was community service work). After discussing modern music, and how no one is doing anything new, they decided they would try to create a new sound and genre as best as they could. Naming themselves after She-Ra, The Princess of Power's fortress, they formed Crystal Castles. Q: When did you start? How did your first microphone check become your first single? In the summer of 2004, i put together a cd of instrumentals and gave them to alice to write vocal parts. When she was ready, we went to a local studio to record our first 5 songs. When we were done, the studio gave us 6 songs. They had secretly recorded the

microphone test and included it on the CD. I called the extra track "Alice Practice". Merok Records (London) heard the track and wanted to put it out on 7 inch, as the a-side. Our first microphone test became our first single. Merok pressed 500 copies and it sold out in 3 days. 7 ruined lives later and now this is our life.

described it best by saying you "play rough." What sort of stuff did you listen to and enjoy to get to this point, though? Our music isn't influenced by anyone. In our heads, what we're doing is completely original. If we're wrong and someone else is doing this out there, that's fine too. We don't care. Q: Describe your aesthetic. Large shiny chunks of vomit.

Q: Are you named after the Atari videogame "Crystal Castles"? No, We didn't know about the videogame at the time.

NOT AN ACCIDENT
Q: Someone once misquoted you and said you started by accident. Explain what you really said. I told an interviewer that the song "Alice Practice" was an accident (Alice was secretly recorded while testing the studio's microphones). The interviewer quoted me as saying the band was an accident. As if we fell on a keyboard and 40 songs just appeared.

MISC.
Q: You dont seem to care about how much press you get. Why? We're not doing this for anyone's approval. Q: Are there artists you'd like to work with? The Stooges in 1969. Joy Division in 1976. Q: In your opinion, do you think music like yours and what's going on in England at the moment has a chance to spread in America? Why/why not? That question reminds me of herpes.

SOUND
Q: Is it true your sound developed from mixing an old arcade machine chip with your keyboard or something like that? No. I smushed a birthday cake into my keyboard. Q: What sort of influences do you guys have? Listening to your work, I can genuinely say that it sounds unlike anything else around these days. There are bits and pieces of other genres, but I think you

NAME
Q: Where did you come up with the name Crystal Castles? We are named after She-Ra, The Princess of Power's fortress in the sky. The commercial for the toy version of the castle includes the lines "The fate of the world is safe in Crystal Castles" and "Crystal Castles, the source of all power."

INFLUENCE
Q: Was there anything you listened to or experienced maybe when you were younger that has influenced your sound? Nothing from our youth has influenced our sound. We are influenced by change.

Straight shootin
The hardest thing to do is hit the ball dead straight, and most often, even though it looks like the ball is flying straight, its hard to see what is actually happening. Most shots have some curve to them, but for this discussion, Ill describe the combination of mechanics the swing string that produces a straight shot. A golf shot flies straight because there is no sidespin on the ball, only backspin as it leaves the clubface. Think of it this way: The ball has a vertical and horizontal axis that looks like a plus sign: +. At impact, when the clubface is square to its path, there is no axis tilt (the plus sign remains perpendicular to the ground), so the ball rotates with pure backspin and the shot flies straight. Curve occurs when the clubface is not perpendicular to its path at impact, so the axis tilts to the left for a draw and to the right for a fade. The three strings of swing mechanics all produce good golf shots, but each has a different ball flight fade, draw or straight. The strings are made of the same seven building blocks: clubface position, ball position, foot flare, aim/alignment, hip action, release pattern/shaft lean and weight flow. stance.

Biddle Ridley, dead at 72

Long before Bill Elliott ever thought about driving a race car, his familys No. 9 Ford was winning races on the short tracks of the Southeast with Biddle Ridley doing the driving. Ridley, the brother of former Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year Jody Ridley, died July 30 at age 72 after a battle with cancer. I loved him to death, Elliott said of Biddle Ridley, a resident of Chatsworth, Ga. He and Jody about raised me. We raced together, stayed together and traveled a lot together. Elliott said Biddle Ridley, who put his own driving aside to work on his brothers cars, was an outstanding driver in his own right. He was a great driver, Elliott said. He won a ton of races. The Ridleys also played roles in getting Elliotts driving career started. They did a lot for me early on, he said. I very much enjoyed working with them. They were determined to do well.

Gordon breaks records with overdue win in Pocono race

eff Gordons droughtbreaking 86th career Sprint Cup victory likely will be remembered as a bittersweet one for the veteran driver. The same rainstorms that played into Gordons victory at Pocono Raceway also brought lightning that killed one fan and injured nine more, one of whom was in critical condition on Monday. Gordon lined up sixth for what turned out to be the races final restart, but surged into the lead when

the front two cars of Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth collided on the start. Before racing could resume, storms hit the track, and the race was called after 98 of 160 laps. Its nice to know that things can still go our way, Gordon said. The way our year has gone, well definitely take it like this. With all the things that have gone wrong for us this year, Im hoping that this is the one that makes up for it all.

When he was told of the situation with the fans, Gordon acknowledged the impact on his victory, one that put him in great position to claim one of the two wild card slots for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Thats the thing thats going to take away from the victory, is the fact that somebody was affected by that, he said. I mean, the fans here are so loyal and avid so you hate to hear something like that. Gordons victory was record-setting on two

fronts. He now has six at Pocono, the most of any driver, and his 86 Cup wins give him undisputed possession of third place on the all-time list. Although NASCARs official records say otherwise, Bobby Allison and most of the sports historians say he has 85. And this win didnt come out of the blue. Gordon had a strong enough car at Pocono to drive to the front from his 27th starting position, and hes been competitive in recent weeks. All I will say is weve

Townley puts off Cup debut

After brushing the wall getting up to speed on his first lap of practice at Pocono Raceway, John Wes Townley opted to postpone his Sprint Cup debut. Jason White took over Frank Stoddards No. 32 Ford and posted a 31st-place finish. Townley ran the Camping World Truck Series race at Pocono and finished eighth, his first-ever top-10 in a major NASCAR series.

Gordon named humanitarian

For his work on behalf of children dealing with serious illnesses, Jeff Gordon has been chosen as the seventh recipient of The Heisman Humanitarian Award, which he will receive during the 78th annual Heisman Memorial Trophy Dinner on Dec. 10 in New York. Gordon established his foundation in 1992 after his thencrew chief Ray Evernhams son was diagnosed with leukemia. Since then, the foundation has raised more than $11 million. Gordon also opened the Jeff Gordon Childrens Hospital in Concord, N.C. The Heisman award includes $50,000 for Gordons foundation.

Odd Hyundai Veloster is very likable

By Christopher A. Randazzo

SPOTLIGHTEPNEWS.COM AUGUST 09, 2012 PAGE 29

We are taught to never judge a book by its cover. But with the 2012 Hyundai Veloster, you are encouraged to do so. Because just by looking at it, you can tell a whole lot about this new, modern day hatchback from Hyundai. And let me start by saying, its different.
The Veloster is one cool, quirky car unlike any other car on the road today. It all starts with those sleek, spunky, aggressive lines a brave interpretation of a hatchback, which, by the way, the Veloster is. But take a walk around the Veloster and from the drivers side you will take it for being a two-door, yet from the passenger side you will see it as a four-door. Thats because Hyundai went with an asymmetrical three-door layout with the Veloster. And we are talking three real doors a long coupelike door on the drivers side and two smaller sedan-like doors on the passenger side. The idea works well. All passengers are encouraged to enter the Veloster from the passenger side. The back doors handle is mounted high in the C-pillar, but its easy to find and entering the Velosters back seat becomes a piece of cake. Once inside, you quickly learn that the Veloster is a strictly a four-seater the back seat is only meant for two (and the smaller those two are, the better). The front seats are nicely done providing good support be it to hold you in while cornering or for comfort on long road trips. Hyundai did a great job carrying over the same sci-fi exterior styling into the interior. It looks and feels good for a car in this class and all the controls are nicely laid out and easy to manage. I strongly recommend the Style Package that my tester came with. With it, the Veloster is equipped with a huge Panoramic sunroof and piano black interior accents along with some great looking 18inch wheels. Underneath the cool sheetmetal and comfortable interior is basically the same underpinnings found in the Hyundai Elantra although the suspension has been retuned to be more nimble and provide more of a sporty feel on curvy roads. The Veloster uses a slightly smaller engine though with its 1.6 liter four-cylinder. It makes 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but if you prefer an automatic, Hyundai offers an automated dual-clutch transmission (DCT) which includes steering-wheel mounted shift paddles. Hamlin to be first-time father

Denny Hamlin made a big announcement during his regular media appearance on Friday at Pocono. I just want to let everyone know that me and Jordan [Fish] are expecting next January, and excited about that, he said. Its been a long time coming, so its going to be exciting to be a dad. He said he hopes he can be as good a father to his child as his dad was to him. Half of what my dad was would be good, he said. My family has done a lot for me to get to this point, obviously, and just all of the sacrifices and all that theyve gone through. My dad tells me all of the time that some of the best times he had is just carrying me around in his pickup truck every day, taking me to work with him and things like that. Its going to be a great experience, and so Im really excited about it, and really just excited to be a part of it. For my parents to have grandkids is all going to be good. He also said there might be wedding bells somewhere in his future. I am 31, so I consider myself pretty patient if I havent been married yet, he said. Theres no reason to rush into it right now, especially with everything that is going on. Weve obviously got a busy six months ahead of us.

Hyundai Veloster ...

15.5 cubic foot hatchback swallowed our luggage for two with room to spare. After logging more than 400 miles in my weeks time with the Hyundai, I came away with it being more of an economical hatchback, than a pocket rocket. Hopefully, the turbo model will change that.

Nationwide race spotlights tomorrows Cup drivers

SPOTLIGHTEPNEWS.COM AUGUST 09, 2012 PAGE 31

Continued from page 29.. I couldnt have asked for a better looking Veloster than the Century White tester that I had. With its 18-inch wheels and black stripes and highlights, it looked a lot nicer than its $22,500 price tag would lead you to believe. But if I could, I would have asked for a manual shift version of the car. The DCT did its job well providing quick shifts at all the right times, but it seemed to rob some of the power out of the Velosters powertrain, and frankly, with just 138 horses, the 2900 pound Veloster cant really afford to lose any more power. Now it didnt feel dangerously slow, but it hardly had the power to match its exciting looks. For 2013, a turbo model is available and I cant wait to see how it

performs, with a manual transmission, of course. Taking a 250 mile road trip in the Veloster, I did manage to better the EPAs highway fuel economy number I saw 39 mpg (EPA claims 38 mpg highway, 29 mpg city). And on the trip, the Veloster did great its By The Numbers:

Despite the performance, I have to hand it to Hyundai. They really have taken a risk with the Veloster and it appears like it will pay off. With its eyecatching looks, sporty driving feel, comfortable cabin and its practicality, the Veloster should have no problem winning over the charm at the young crowd it is aimed at. -- Christopher A.
