PASTORAL LETTER

Dear brothers and sisters in Jesus,

am pleased to learn that our Catechism Department has chosen as this years Motto Family prayer: beginning of catechesis and I am delighted to devote the first pastoral letter after my Episcopal Ordination and solemn installation as your Bishop to the theme of catechetical formation. Already in the previous pastoral letter I had underlined the importance of family in society and of the centrality of family prayer in married life. I take this opportunity to appreciate the selfless services of all our catechism teachers, guidance of our priests and sisters, students and their parents who are zealously engaged in the faith formation of hundreds of our kids and thereby of the whole future generation. May God bless you all! The Second Vatican Council, the 50th anniversary of which is being celebrated this year, stresses that family is the domestic church. Family is the first pulpit where the Word of God is to be preached and practiced. Naturally the first preachers in this scenario are parents and grandparents. The habit of reading the Bible and sharing the Word of God should be fostered in each Christian family. The practice of reading a passage of the Bible before meals in some families and religious houses is laudable. Similarly, parents can introduce Bible reading before, during or after family prayer. Parents must see that there is a copy of the Bible in each home; for each child, a Childrens Bible could be given as a Birthday gift, which will form part of their collection of books. So that the Word of God is spread in our communities, copies of the Bible would be suitable prizes for a variety of family or neighborhood events and parish competitions. Family prayer is very important in maintaining the religious atmosphere in a family. Whether it is in the evening or during the meals, the coming together of all family members and praying together will cement family ties and nourish the love and communion of all family members. As St. Augustine says, a family that prays together, stays together. The beautiful practice of greeting each other after the family prayer must

be continued. It has not only a spiritual effect, but also a psychological and social effect. It becomes a means of reconciliation and forgiveness, an expression of love and unity. It is from the atmosphere of a prayerful family that good vocations will sprout. In Kerala, if parents are hindered to attend the evening prayers in the family, grandparents will take the initiative and lead the prayer. But in the migrant context of Delhi, many kids do not have that possibility. Therefore, parents should pay special attention that our kids foster the habit of praying together in the family. For what should we pray during the family prayer? First and foremost, the family prayer should be prompted by personal spirituality. Family prayer leads our children to God. Before they go to the playschools and primary schools, they learn elementary lessons of education in the family. Similarly, they should learn Christian values and virtues from parents in the family. Family prayer should strengthen our relationship with Jesus and make our spiritual life grow. It should be also an occasion to examine our consciences, to evaluate our relationships with the Lord and with others, especially with those in the family. Family prayer must be an occasion to feel the presence of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to whom families are dedicated. Such moments are also an occasion to meditate on whether the family lives like the Holy Family of Nazareth. Family prayer also offers moments to pray for those who are sick and suffering, in particular those who are in difficulty and mental strain. It is the time to pray for our children, their exams and their success. If parents do that well, their children will spontaneously learn to do it themselves. Family prayer is also a time to pray for the departed. Praying for the dead is a venerable tradition of the Syro-Malabar Church. I am happy to learn that in all family prayers one prayer is dedicated to the eternal repose of the dead. During family prayer different types of popular devotions, to the Blessed Virgin and to Saints, could be practiced. In this sense, in many parts the rosary forms an essential part of the family prayer. We are known to have great Marian devotion and it needs to be practiced at home. Devotions including Novenas and various forms of popular piety could be practiced together with family prayer. For example, where the tradition of Devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is practiced on Saturdays, it should be continued; as well as the devotion to St. Joseph in the month of March, Marian devotion in the month of May, devotion to Sacred Heart of Jesus in the month of June, etc. This will surely help introduce the lives of saints to our kids. In the context of the Syro-Malabar Church, devotion and novenas to Sr. Alphonsa, Bl. Chavara Kuriakose, Bl. Mariam Thresia, Bl. Mother Theresa, etc. could be introduced. The lives of saints teach us how they experienced God in their lives. In the same manner, where the practice of saying the evening breviary prayer in the family is observed, it ought to be continued. In the hectic world of today and under the pressure of each ones occupation, all may not be able to attend Holy Mass every day; but spending together some time in family prayer and praying for each other is something that could be realized if one really wants. If this is absolutely not practical in some cases due to various reasons, a common prayer

during the family meal should be encouraged. Another way of family prayer is teaching the children to pray before going to school, or praying early morning when they get up, and at night time before they go to sleep, etc. A favorable atmosphere is to be set for conducting the family prayer. For example, with TVs on and high volume music playing in the next room, no family prayer can be conducted in peace and serenity. Lighting a candle or lamp, putting some flowers in the prayer room, etc will surely add to the atmosphere of the family prayer. It is also imperative to switch off the mobile phones and similar devices and thereby our children will learn to spend a few moments in silence and recollection. It goes without saying that the presence of both parents during the family prayer is extremely important. Family prayer is also an occasion to sing together. Many of our children are gifted with a talent in music and after or during the family prayer they should be encouraged to sing some devotional songs. I hope that the catechism department will give some guidance and practice also in devotional music, which could be sung during the family prayer. Equally important is the family meal. Unfortunately, in some families no fresh food is cooked and the children are constrained to consume alone fast food or frozen food. This is a dangerous tendency that affects the psychological balance of our children. In such separated or scattered family situations, no family prayer could be expected. It is my ardent wish that in our new diocese there will be thousands of good families well founded in deep faith and religious values, which is nourished by family prayer. Thus our parishes will become Christian communities of living witness to the future generation. + Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara Bishop of Faridabad

CONGREGATIO PRO ECCLESIIS ORIENTALIBUS Prot. No. 13/2012 Message on the occasion of the Episcopal ordination of Msgr. Kuriakose Bharanikulangara to the Eparchy of Faridabad of the Syro-Malabar faithful May 26th, 2012
Your Grace,

Leonardo Cardinal Sandri

oday, through the laying on of hands and the action of the Holy Spirit, you have been invested with the fullness of the priesthood of Jesus Christ. Sharing fully now in the mission handed on by the Apostles, you are to lead a portion of Gods people, teaching, sanctifying and governing them in communion with the Major Archbishop and Archiepiscopal Synod of the Syro-Malabar Church and the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI. Indeed, in view of your many years of service to the Holy See, His Holiness has accorded you the title Archbishop ad personam. As is well know, the local church entrusted to your care is no ordinary one. The erection of the new Eparchy of Faridabad of the Syro-Malabar faithful signifies recognition of the spreading of Syro-Malabar faithful throughout India and of the need to provide them with pastoral care according to their proper tradition. They have awaited you with eager longing, as was eloquently expressed to us from Delhi Syro Malabar Mission. This is an occasion full of hope: the prospect of the presence of a vital Syro-Malabar Church, with strong families, numerous vocations, and missionary zeal in the capital area of India promises good things for all the Christians and the people of all faiths present there. I willingly join with you and with the many faithful of Faridabad in thanking God for this great gift. May the grace that you receive today provide you with the wisdom, courage and charity that befit a faithful servant of Our Lord Jesus Christ. His Excellency, Archbishop Secretary, Msgr. Cyril Vasil, the Under-Secretary, Msgr. Maurizio Malvestiti, and all the Staff of this Congregation renew their best wishes on the occasion of your ordination to the episcopate. To His Beatitude Cardinal George Alencherry, to the Apostolic Nuncio and to the Bishops, Priests, consecrated persons and lay faithful participating in this solemn ordination ceremony, I express my brotherly and profound regards. May the Risen Lord, through the intercession of Our Lady, the Mother of God and of the Church, Queen of Apostles, and the prayers of St. Thomas, obtain for Your Grace the abundant outpouring of the Divine Spirit.

CONGREGATIO PRO GENTIUM EVANGELIZATIONE PROT. N.1344/12

Your Excellency,

Cardinal Fernando Filoni Rome, 7th May 2012

he creation of the new Diocese of Faridabad in India, comprising the territories in and around New Delhi (including the States of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir, as well as the civil Districts of Gauthambuddnagar and Ghaziabad of Uttar Pradesh) for the pastoral care of the Syro-Malabar faithful and their missionary activities, is a historical event in the history of the same Syro-Malabar sui iuris Church, in its two thousand years existence in India. Through this act of the Holy Father, a long cherished desire of the St. Thomas Christians of Syro-Malabar Church in India is fulfilled. On this happy occasion I sincerely congratulate you, Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, the First Bishop of the newly erected Diocese and I pray that the Lord assists you always in this new mission. The international experience you have gathered during the past seventeen years, that you served in different Apostolic Nunciatures, will certainly of be of great help to you in building up the new Diocese and guiding it pastorally. Full unity and communion within the same Church and with the other Churches sui iuris is necessary to give a common and convincing witness to the Gospel in the missionary context of the Country. The mission entrusted to the Church is one and the same: Go and preach to all the nations and baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Mathew 28, 19-20). Therefore, all the three Churches sui iuris should remain united in faith and proceed with a common mind and spirit, maintaining, however, the particular theological, liturgical, religious and spiritual patrimony of each one, which certainly adds to the beauty of the one and the same Catholic Church. I also take this occasion to invite all the Syro-Malabar faithful to intensely live their centuries long ecclesial and spiritual tradition, and to remain always united with their Bishop and other Pastors, with an open heart to promote communion with the faithful of other Churches sui iuris and collaborate with them, in living out and fulfilling the common missionary mandate.

ogetherness is the key component of a good family. If the family is bound together in love they can face any challenges. We need to understand the small things that create bonding between spouses and develop those into habits well before our children grow up, so that it will be written in their hearts for the rest of their lives. Spending time together (in prayer, in meals, in recreation), respecting each other, helping each other, appreciating one another and expressing your love in the many little ways you know are some of these small things. Cant we start with these, should we wait for the big ones? As you may be aware the Family Apostolate of the Faridabad diocese is conducting pre-marriage guidance courses at regular intervals. This course is intended to provide essential spiritual, emotional and intellectual knowledge to begin a family life .It is a three day residential course normally scheduled to begin on a Friday morning and end on a Sunday evening to suit the participants who

PASTORAL LETTER ON THE OCCASION OF THE PRISON MINISTRY SUNDAY- 12th AUGUST 2012 BY THE PATRON OF PRISON MINISTRY INDIA*
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Jesus Christ, n this Prison Ministry Sunday, the Church asks us to make a journey, a journey to the prisoners and prisons to live the words of Jesus; when I was in prison, you came to visit me. It helps us to see the crucified face of Jesus in 3,68,998 prisoners in 1394 prisons of India. They are often neglected by the society, desperate and disappointed. They are marked with a number instead of a name. they wear the cloth stitched for somebody else. His time clock is smashed as soon as he enters the prison. He is watched all the time. He is chained like animals while being taken to the court. His absence is marked by the warden, never as father or mother nor son or daughter but merely as a missing number. Once the judgement of a prisoner has been made, the matter remains closed for the general public and the judiciary but the Church cannot forget them. The Church hails the profound dignity of every human person, despite his or her cruelties even those condemned to death. It bears witness to the truth that the worth of a human person is not measured by usefulness or talents, health or sickness, age creed or race. Our human dignity comes from God , in His image we are all made (Gen. 1:26). No amount of privation or suffering can ever remove this dignity, for we are always precious in the sight of God. The Indian prison today is a human warehouse. It is always overcrowded. Almost we have lodged 3,68,998 prisoners which exceed the available capacity of 3,20,450 prisoners, approximately an increase of 48,548 prisoners. A small hall accommodates about 40 to 60 people with one toilet without a door. There is always a bad smell around which normally stops them from having even a satisfactory meal. 70% of the prisoners are under-trials in India. The vast majority of under-trials have committed petty crimes It is true that many of the prisoners are criminals but 60% of them reportedly hail from broken families. Most often the neglected childhood has catered them to the prisons. Our Master is the Good Shepherd who deserted 99 sheep and had gone in search of the one that was lost. It is most certain; the lost sheep was not one of the obedient sheep. Today the works of mercy towards the prisoners is coordinated by Prison Ministry India under Catholic Bishops conference of India. About 6000 volunteers including priests, sisters, brothers and lay persons are involved in this ministry 30 rehabilitation centres are set apart in the care of released prisoners, children of prisoners and the victims by giving them hope, love and help. St. Maximilian Kolbe, the patron saint of prisons volunteers sacrificed his life to save a poor man and his family. Definitely the supreme sacrifice endured not in honour of a friend but a total stranger. Mother Theresa once told, Jesus said love another; He did not say, love the whole world;

we can do no great things; only small things with great love. Prison Ministry aims at reconciliation of the offender with the person he/she has offended, the offended child with his/her family and the prisoner with God who hates the sin but love and forgives the sinner. We want to make the prison, a place where men and women pray. We shall make the prisoner know that, they are not alone, without friends but we are their friends who truly love them in the name of Christ. In order to achieve this, we seek the collaboration of all of you, priests, sisters, brothers, social workers, health personnel,

lawyers, family members, councillors, psychologists and the civil society at large to make someone worthy whom society has judged worthless, consider useful whom society has judged useless. May I express my heartfelt appreciation and prayer to all of you for your committed works in prison ministry. May God bless all of you with His choicest blessings. + Rt. Rev. Peter Remigius Patron, Prison Ministry India
