Guided tours are scheduled to begin at noon and conclude by 3 p.m., rain or shine, at the game farms in Armstrong, Crawford and Lycoming (two farms) counties. The tours are designed to provide the public an opportunity to learn more about the Game Commissions game farms and our pheasant propagation program, said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. While pheasants are not a native species to Pennsylvania, or the United States for that matter, the Game Commissions pheasant-stocking program continues to be a service in high demand, provides a tangible product for the license buyer, and adds diversity to todays hunting experience at a time when wild pheasant populations are low. Also, as we continue to work to recruit and retain hunters, pheasant hunting seems to be one thing that our senior license holders enjoy, as it reminds them of their youth, and our newer junior license holders enjoy, as it provides them with an exciting hunt. Tour stops will include hatcheries, brooder houses, and rearing, grow-out and over-wintering pens. Workshop discussions will focus on objectives in propagation management, including sportsmens organizations participating in raising day-old chicks provided by the farms to increase local hunting opportunities and surplus day-old hen chicks that are sold to the public. Also, after registration and before taking the tour, visitors may view a brief DVD highlighting farm operations throughout the year. When visitors arrive on tour dates, they will be asked to register before game farm personnel take them on a guided tour. In order to maintain biosecurity and minimize human contact with the birds, visitors will be asked to remain with tour groups.

Since budget cuts in 2005, the agency reduced the production of ring-necked pheasants from 200,000 birds to 100,000 birds annually at the Game Commissions game farms, and the agency temporarily closed one of the game farms. Thanks to recent revenues from Marcellus Shale-related gas leases on State Game Lands, the agency has increased its production level to distribute 200,000 birds for the 2012-13 hunting seasons, and we reopened the fourth game farm in 2010 to reach that production level, Roe said. Also, in recent years, the Game Commission has invested in many long overdue game farm infrastructure improvements. With the increase to 200,000 pheasants being stocked for the 2012-13 seasons, Roe said he hopes hunters have an even better pheasant hunting experience in the upcoming seasons. Were expecting hunters will see more pheasants in the field, because the Game Commission will be stocking pheasants during the first four weeks of the seasons, which is two weeks more than in recent years, Roe said. Because of these improvements and expanded production, we encourage pheasant hunters, as well as other interested individuals, to participate in our public tours of the four game farms. Goals for the pheasant propagation program are found in the agencys pheasant management plan, which can be viewed on the agencys web site (www.pgc.state.pa.us) by putting your cursor over Hunt/Trap in the menu bar at the top of the page, then clicking on Hunting and then choosing Pheasant from the Small Game listing. Directions to the game farms are as follows: Loyalsock Game Farm: Lycoming County, 136 Game Farm Rd., Montoursville, PA 17754. The game farm is five miles north of Montoursville on Route 87, but the Route 973 bridge over the Loyalsock Creek still is out due to last years flood. The game farm is 1.5 miles east of Warrensville on Route 973. Follow Warrensville Road 5.7 miles north to Warrensville from the Warrensville Road exit (Exit 23) of Interstate 80. Tour starts at the hatchery. Northcentral Game Farm: Lycoming County, 1609 Proctor Rd., Williamsport, PA 17701. The game farm is 18 miles north of Montoursville off of Route 87. Tour starts at the hatchery of the Proctor (northern) farm. Western Game Farm: Crawford County, 25761 Highway 408, Cambridge Springs, PA 16403. The game farm is 3.5 miles east of Cambridge Springs on Route 408. Tour starts at the office/hatchery. Southwest Game Farm: Armstrong County, 217 Pheasant Farm Rd., New Bethlehem, PA 16242. Chewy Chocolate PB Sandwich Cookies Dough: 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 1/2 cup rolled oats, pulverized to coarse flour in a food processor or blender 1/2 cup Dutch cocoa powder 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 3/4 cup Smart Balance(r) Original Buttery Spread 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1 egg 1 1/2 oz unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled slightly Filling: 1/2 cup Smart Balance(r) Rich Roast Creamy Peanut Butter 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar 3 Tbsp Smart Balance(r) Fat Free Milk 1/2 tsp vanilla In a small bowl, combine flours, oats, cocoa, baking powder and salt; set aside. In a medium mixing bowl, cream Buttery Spread and sugars with an electric mixer. Beat in vanilla and egg. Blend in melted chocolate. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Using a 1-tablespoon scoop, spoon dough 2 inches apart onto parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake at 325 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on parchment paper for at least 5 minutes. For filling, cream together all ingredients in a mixing bowl until smooth. If needed, add a small amount of extra milk to reach the desired consistency. Transfer filling to a zip-top plastic bag or piping bag. When completely cooled, place half the cookies bottom side up. Pipe filling onto the cookies, using about 2 teaspoons of filling per cookie. Top with the remaining cookies, bottom side down, to create a sandwich. Yield: about 24 sandwich cookies (48 cookies made into 24 sandwiches) Per 1-sandwich cookie serving: 196 calories, 3g protein, 28g carbohydrate, 8.5g fat, 2g saturated fat, 4g monounsaturated fat, 2g polyunsaturated fat, 0g trans fat, 238mg omega-3 fatty acids, 1,688mg omega-6 fatty acids, 8mg cholesterol, 133mg sodium, 2g fiber

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Know Your Pet's 'Safe Area' DEAR READERS: I recently received a report from the University of Missouri about a dog named "Sugar," a Cocker Spaniel who was badly injured in the tornado that ravaged Joplin, Mo. When her owners grabbed her and ran for the safety of their basement shelter, "Sugar, sensing the increased fear of her owners, became panicky and bolted back upstairs to her own 'safe area," a spot under one of the beds.' With the tornado almost atop their house, the owners could not leave the shelter to retrieve her. Sugar survived the tornado, although she was badly injured and had lost use of her hind legs. Veterinarians at the University of Missouri performed emergency surgery to correct the injury to her spine. After many days of physical rehabilitation and therapy, Sugar is recovering with her owners. In addition to this encouraging story of recovery, what caught my interest was that Sugar's owners knew exactly where she preferred to hide when something scary was happening. This doesn't seem like much, but knowing your pet's favorite hiding places can be a lifesaving advantage in an emergency. With Sugar, unfortunately, this was not the case, as she was found several blocks away. There was nothing more her owners could do without putting themselves in mortal danger (something else that is important to keep in mind in an emergency). But in a less extreme emergency, when there's time to gather the family and pets, or when your pet is having a health emergency, you'll be able to find your pet faster, or direct emergency personnel to where your pet normally hides, if you know where that hiding place is. According to a recent study by Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, the average engagement ring is valued at over $2,500. Since the delicate nature of jewelry makes it susceptible to damage, proper cleaning and caring for your jewelry is one of the best ways to prolong its life and ensure its worth. "Not only does cleaning your jewelry on a regular basis keep it looking great, but it is also a smart way to see if your rings or gemstones have been damaged," says Amy Helein, graduate gemologist (GIA), certified gemologist appraiser (AGS) from Jewelers Mutual. Helein offers a few tips to keep jewelry looking great all year: Clean your jewelry frequently to avoid dirt buildup, which may hasten wear. Never clean your jewelry over the sink. Tiny pieces of jewelry can fall down the drain before you blink. Don't use toothpaste to clean your jewelry. It is a common misconception, but toothpaste has abrasives that can scratch metal and stone. For diamonds, do use ammonia-based cleaner or rubbing alcohol and gently scrub with a soft toothbrush; dry with a soft, clean cloth. If you buy jewelry cleaner, mind the product label. Some are just for diamonds, others for silver, opals and emeralds. When in doubt, use warm water and a soft-bristle toothbrush. With necklaces that contain a string, like a strand of pearls, use a damp cloth to wipe dirt off. Getting the string wet can cause it to stretch out and weaken. When not wearing your jewelry, place each item in a separate soft compartment or container. If cluttered together, jewelry can become scratched. Have a jeweler clean and inspect your most-often-worn jewelry at least annually, looking for loose settings, faulty links and worn prongs. During yearly inspections, have your jeweler check the current value of your jewelry to make sure you have adequate insurance coverage in the event of loss or damage. You may want to avoid sending food that will be inedible in a few days, but if you want to ship off a batch of favorite cookies, place them in a sturdy container and layer wax paper between the baked goods, using crumpled paper to fill in any void spaces. Secure the lid of the container to the body with tape to keep it from accidentally popping off. Place the container in a sturdy cardboard box and use packing materials to cushion the container tightly in place. Ship overnight, priority or standard. Also, if sending to a camper, check to see if the camp has any food restrictions; for example, to protect children from peanut allergies. Instant works. For college or boarding school students, consider coffee beans, tea bags or flavored instant coffee drinks. Send a snapshot. Include a photo. Although your child can probably catch up with the latest photos online, it's still nice to have a framed picture of the family to display or a snapshot for the bulletin board. DOLLAR STRECHERS Summer Play Clothes Every spring I look forward to the warmer weather and new spring/ summer clothes. Often these are simply last years spring or summer clothes pulled out of a box, but I need to fill in those gaps every year when children have grown or things have worn out. This year, with the rising gas and food prices, I have felt a need to cut back on things. Looking at the winter clothes I was packing away or giving away, I got an idea. First, I put away things that would still be nice and fit someone next fall. Then I took a look at all those pants with worn knees and long sleeved t-shirts that had seen better days. I got out my scissors and started to cut. Long sleeved shirts became short sleeved shirts and pants were soon cropped, capris or shorts, depending on where the holes were located. One or two items will need a patch or a strategic bit of dying, etc, but I managed to transform worn out school clothes into quite presentable play clothes for summer. Before You Call the Repair Service When I have an issue with my appliances, like washing machine or even the coffee maker, I have often saved a service call by doing the following. I go to a search engine and type in the appliance name and the symptoms. Many times, I have found that it is a common problem, and people have offered simple instructions on how to fix it. In some cases, it is a simple adjustment that you just need to know where to find the screw to tighten or the panel to take off and clean behind. Other times, I have found that I can fix it by replacing a part that costs less than $50. Many times, this has even included detailed instructions on where to order the part and how to install it. I have also found out occasionally that it is a complex problem that costs more to fix than to replace the item, or it is a complicated or delicate repair that requires an expert and well worth the service call charge. Sometimes, it doesnt give me any help, but since it takes only a minute and doesnt cost anything, Im not any worse off for doing it! I have even done this with my computer when I start getting weird messages. I type in the message and find that it is a simple fix, find that it is a complex fix I dont want to mess with, or find nothing at all. U.

Equipment You'll Need: Glass canning jars Rings and lids A nonreactive pot Hot water bath canner with a rack Jar lifter Canning funnel Fruit, vegetables and canning spices Pasta Sauce Yields 5 pints 6 pounds fresh tomatoes (about 18 medium) 14 cup granulated sugar 1 pouch (5 ounces) Mrs. Wages Pasta Sauce Mix Wash fresh tomatoes. Scald 3 minutes in boiling water. Dip into cold water. Cut out cores, remove skins and puree to smooth consistency in blender or food processor. Combine puree, sugar and pasta sauce mix in a large pot and bring to a boil. Stir occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer 25 minutes. Stir occasionally. Pasta sauce is ready. Serve it: Ready to use, or pour into containers and re_frigerate up to one week. Freeze it: Pour into freezer containers and let cool. Store in freezer up to one year. Can it: Pour hot sauce into clean, sterilized pint canning jars, leaving 12-inch headspace. Cap each jar when filled. Process 40 minutes in boiling water bath. Test jars for airtight seals according to manufacturer's directions. Store up to one year. If jars do not completely seal, refrigerate and consume within one week.

JMH UNVEILS COMPLETED ROOM IN RENOVATION PROJECT Wellsville, NY (July 25, 2012)- Spectacular. That is one of the words used to describe the recently completed sample room on the second floor at Jones Memorial Hospital. This year, the focus of the hospitals Hometown Heroes Annual Fund Drive, is the complete renovation of 12 patient rooms on the second floor. Once completed, each room will have fresh paint, new flooring and new furniture including tables and chairs, bedside stands and wall cabinets. In addition, they

will have flat screen televisions, and new privacy curtains, window treatments and bedding. We are very excited by what is coming, said Donna Bliven, VP of Patient Care Services at JMH. Now that the first room is complete, we can see what the rest of the floor will look like at the end of the project and it is very exciting! According to Facilities Services Director Jeff Ely, by concentrating their efforts on completely renovating one room from top to bottom, we are able to show people what their gifts to the annual fund drive will accomplish. He noted that by the end of the year, the plan is to have 12 of the 23 patient rooms on the second floor completed. Of course, finances come into play, Jeff said. If all goes well, we will have six semiprivate and six private rooms done by the end of the year. The average cost of each room is about $6,000. The renovation project was inspired by the work that was done last fall on the second floor nurses station. Thanks to a gift from the late Kathryn Church of Andover, the nurses area was given a complete facelift by Bill Lynch of Andover Wood Products. It is a wonderful workspace and a major improvement, Donna added. This years Annual Fund Drive, which continues until October 1, offers some unique recognition opportunities. It is important that those who make a financial commitment to the hospital know how much their gift is appreciated and that they are recognized in an appropriate way, explained Judy Burt, Director of Community Relations at Jones. The nature of the project is such that we can put a plaque on each room either in honor of the donor or in memory of a loved one. To date, the annual fund drive has raised 50% of the funds needed to complete all 12 rooms. We are looking to our community to support this project, said Eva Benedict, CEO at Jones Memorial. At orientation, parents and students that are coming to the high school for the first time receive important information about policies and procedures at the high school and get a chance to meet the high school staff. While I cant be sure what went wrong with Rocky, I suspect that he either had a heart attack or a stroke. Guinea pig expert Peter Gurney, author of numerous books, including Piggy Potions (Kingdom Books), and a Web site, The A to Z of Guinea Pigs [http://web.onetel.net.uk/~petergurney/atozmainpage.htm] describes heart attack symptoms as the guinea pig being too weak to stand, often lying flat on its side, giving great heaving breaths and having a weak and slow heartbeat. A guinea pig that has suffered a stroke will usually be paralyzed down one side of its body, with its head tilted at an acute angle to its body, and its eyes may have rapid jerky movements. The reason an owner should differentiate between the two is that, particularly in the case of a heart attack, the sooner the guinea pig gets emergency treatment the better chance it has of surviving. It sounds like you were observant of your pets behavior prior to his becoming ill. Guinea pigs can show few overt signs of deteriorating health. Owners must watch for symptoms like a loss of appetite (one of the biggest signs), weight loss of just a couple ounces, subtle changes in behavior or changes in the animals coat and eyes. Any of these should warrant a call to the vet and a visit within 24 hours. Acute symptoms like Rockys are emergencies, and the guinea pig should be taken in immediately.

Clean them if they need it with a dry paper towel and store them in a large zip bag lined with a few layers of paper towels, changing the paper towels as soon as moisture starts to show on them. They last much longer, usually a week or two longer than just left in what they came home in. Also, I store my lettuce this way. Since we grow it in the garden, we always have a lot of it, but instead of a zip bag, I save the produce bags from the store and use them. Radishes brought in from the garden get cleaned and stored in a small container with water inside it. A large crop of tomatoes can be saved and frozen after being blanched. I use zip storage bags or slice and run them through the food dehydrator. Sometimes I grind them up to make a great tomato paste. mcART Nite 2012 The McKean County Historical Society will host its annual mcART Nite on Saturday, October 6. This event helps to showcase the talents of our countys artists and greatly assists with much needed funding for the Old Jail Museum as well. We have begun to contact artisans, but would like to encourage participation from others who may not be aware of this venue for sharing their refined art skills. The courthouse will be transformed into an art museum for the night and the fine art of painters, sculptors, photographers, authors, weavers and quilters will be on display for the viewing public. This years student work will be shown by the Bradford Area School District - this helps promote the amateur work of budding artists who may be part of future shows! The deadline for participation in this years show is set for Aug. 20 so we may begin to determine the space to reserve for the display of everyones artwork. Artists have graciously given pieces of their art work to the museum in the past for an auction that is held in the main courtroom. As stated, funds from this event will help with some of the expenses for running the museum. In an effort to better showcase the artists beautiful work prior to the night of the auction, we are asking to have any donations dropped off at the museum before Sept. 6. Photos of the work will be on the Facebook page for the museum and two of Smethports local businesses, Light Waves Laser Engraving and The Country Porch, will sponsor storefront window space to display some of the donated pieces, too. I save a paper towel roller when the towels are used up, fill the empty cardboard container with used bags from other shopping trips and stash it under the seat in my vehicle. GOOD HOUSEKEEPING Summer Plum Tart A satisfying finish to a summer meal -- fresh, sweet plums in a delicious crumb crust topped with crushed gingersnaps. COOK: 30 minutes TOTAL: 40 minutes MAKES: 12 servings 1/2 cup sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 pinch salt 2 pound (about 6 medium) ripe purple or red plums, unpeeled, each cut into 8 wedges 6 (about 1/3 cup) gingersnap cookies, coarsely crumbled 1. Prepare and bake Crumb Crust as recipe directs for 9-inch tart pan with removable bottom using gingersnap cookies; cool. 2. In 3-quart saucepan, stir sugar, cornstarch, salt and 1/3 cup cold water until blended. Add plum wedges, stirring to coat evenly. 3. Heat plum mixture to boiling over medium-high heat; boil 2 minutes, stirring. Remove saucepan from heat. 4. Spoon hot plum mixture into cooled crust. Refrigerate until wellchilled, about 3 hours. Sprinkle with crumbled gingersnap cookies just before serving.

This landmark legislation, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, redirected the use of a federal excise tax on sporting arms and ammunition to help restore Americas wildlife, explained Carl G. Roe, Pennsylvania Game Commission executive director. Now known as the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife

A. Willis Robertson, of Virginia, and U.S. Senator Key Pittman, of Nevada, who were instrumental in securing the bills passage in their respective chambers. The bill itself was written by Carl D. Shoemaker, who was a special investigator for the Special Committee on Conservation of

Wildlife Resources in the U.S. Senate. The bill was adopted by Congress and signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who wasnt quite as bully for wildlife as his distant rough-riding cousin, President Teddy Roosevelt, who was the countrys 26th president and incredibly instrumental in forging Americas then budding conservation movement. At that time, the Pennsylvania Game Commission was living off the revenues - $1.3 million in 1937 - obtained from a $2 resident hunting license and a $15 nonresident license. It wasnt enough to adequately manage the more than 450 species of wild birds and mammals the agency was mandated to conserve. Thats why the new P-R funding immediately became so important to the agency. It didnt hurt that the Commonwealth benefitted greatly from the formula the U.S. Biological Survey became the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in 1940 - used annually to disburse P-R funds. The hefty P-R allocations Pennsylvania receives annually have been and continue to be influenced mostly by the states large number of hunters. The USFWSs formula uses a states geographic size - Pennsylvania ranks 33rd - and hunting license sales - Pennsylvania is usually one of the top three states - to establish each states funding level. During the 1940s, hunter numbers dropped as Pennsylvanians enlisted for and fought in World War II. It would have been harder for the Game Commission to fulfill its duties had it not been for P-R funding. Those annual allocations helped keep the agencys programs on course. Then, after the war, the states hunter numbers grew every decade - particularly after the babyboomers became of hunting age - until they plateaued in the early 1980s. Pennsylvania continues to sell 900,000 to one million hunting licenses annually, and that keeps the Game Commission in an enviable position for P-R funding, explained Roe. Pennsylvania is grateful for all the PittmanRobertson Wildlife Restoration Program has done for the Commonwealth. Wildlife conservation in this state wouldnt be the same without it.

Pennsylvania currently is surpassed only by Texas in hunter numbers, based on a statistical analysis of all states conducted by the USFWS in the 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife Associated Recreation, the latest report from which statistical information can be obtained. There wasnt a close third place among the remaining 48 states. What makes the PittmanRobertson Wildlife Restoration Act so remarkable is the lasting ecological good it has fostered across America, said Roe. Since P-R began giving grant money to states in 1939, it has provided an amazing $7 billion - including more than $275 million to Pennsylvania for wildlife conservation. P-R money has helped the Game Commission buy more than 185,000 acres of State Game Lands, fund important wildlife surveys and research and improve habitat on State Game Lands. It also helps finance hunter education and was instrumental in the reintroduction of bald eagles. The Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act also has helped ensure that every dollar raised through state hunting license sales is spent on wildlife management. This came about through a late adjustment in the bills development crafted by Rep. Robertson. His amendment created a mandate requiring all participating states to enact laws prohibiting the use of hunting license revenues for any purpose other than operating their state wildlife management agency. Compliance among the states came quickly, but not necessarily enthusiastically. In the first two years of PR funding, 48 states split $2.29 million. Two of our now 50 states didnt receive federal aid, Alaska and Hawaii. Although Alaska began receiving P-R funding in 1942 and Hawaii in 1946, they received their aid because they were United States territories. Neither became states until 1959. When the PittmanRobertson Wildlife Restoration Act became law, the country had about 6.8 million hunters and Pennsylvania had about
