Pastors Corner ~
BREAD OF LIFE SERIES PART 4 WHEN GOD BECAME OUR FOOD I am absolutely certain that no nutritionist will ever accept the idea that God becomes our food. The earth is full of resources that sustain our food requirements: plants, fruit trees, vegetables, animal meat, fish and other marine products, etc. To the ordinary mind, the idea that God will become our food is completely absurd, ridiculous, irreverent and totally inconceivable! This same aversion for that idea was the reaction of the Jews when Jesus said that He will give his flesh to eat. This is simply an idea of cannibalism. It was too much for them to take this saying from Jesus. But we heard it right from Jesus own mouth, I am the bread that came down from heaven. He was talking about His sacramental presence at the Last Supper, on the Cross in Calvary and in the Holy Eucharist. Why would Jesus, the God who became Man want to become the food for the world? First, because God loves us unconditionally, He planned that we will be with Him for all eternity (Ephesians 1:10). In human relations, the closest that two lovers can get is to have one heart, one soul and share their bodies to each other. This is true for married couples. But God wants to be close to us more than just being outside of us but rather He wants to be IN us. When we take God IN ourselves through the Eucharist, we become like Him in holiness and we truly become his image and likeness (Genesis 1:27). To be worthy to be with Him forever, we have to practice being with Him on earth through faith and love. Jesus the Bread from heaven transforms us to become worthy of God. Secondly, the only One who can satisfy the deepest longings of creation is the Creator Himself. Jesus, being God and Bread of life not only promises physical satisfaction (John 6:10-13) but gives answer to every human need and promises eternal bliss. Sometimes, we run around in circles without finding what the meaning of life is. In Jesus the Bread of Life, we find the fulfillment of the desires of our hearts, here and hereafter.
