PHYSICS PRACTICAL - A LEVEL 2ND YEAR You are to investigate the effect of temperature on the resistance of a thermistor.

Power supply

thermistor

1. You have been provided with a thermistor which is immersed in water. Connect the circuit shown in the diagram. Ensure that the meters are connected so that the positive terminal of the supply is connected to the positive terminal of each of the meters. 2. i ) Measure and record the temperature T of the water giving the value in kelvin (K). (T in K = oC + 273) ii) Measure and record the potential difference V across the thermistor and the current I through it. ii ) Calculate the resistance RT of the thermistor at the temperature T. iii) Justify the number of significant figures to which you have given the value of RT. 3. Raise the temperature by a suitable amount to determine the value of the resistance RT of the thermistor for a higher temperature. Repeat this to get, in all , five values of resistance at five different values of temperature, up to a maximum of 70oC. 4. Tabulate all your observations. 5. Theory suggests that

RT = A eE/(kT)
where A , E are constants and k = 1.38 x 10 -23 J/K = Boltzmans constant. Plot a suitable graph to enable you to find the constants A and E.. Give the S.I. units for A and E. 6. State any precautions you have taken to ensure that the observations are as accurate as possible. PHYSICS PRACTICAL - A LEVEL 1st YEAR

You are to find the e.m.f. and the internal resistance of a battery. 1. You have been provided with a battery, a switch, some resistors of known value, an ammeter and some connecting wires.

Connect the circuit shown in the diagram. Ensure that the meter is connected with the correct polarity. 2. Choosing five different values of R, record these values of R and the corresponding values of the current I. Tabulate all your observations. 3. Show that the physical quantities R and I obey the relation R = - r

where E and r are the e.m.f. and the internal resistance of the battery respectively. 4. Plot a suitable graph to obtain values for E and r. 5. State any precautions you have taken to ensure that the observations are as accurate as possible.

S1

You are to find the capacity of a capacitor by sharing its charge with another. 1. Connect the circuit shown below. a) Ensure that the positive terminals of the capacitors are connected to the positive poles of the battery.

Co S2 C

b) If you find it difficult to connect the circuit , ask the Supervisor and help will be given. You will loose 15 % of the marks. c) The value of Co is given on a card.

2. Keeping S1 closed and S2 open, record the voltage Vo on Co. 3. Keeping S1 open and S2 closed , record the voltage V on the two capacitors in parallel. 4. Repeat steps (2) and (3) for four more different potential differences chosen from the e.m.f. source. 5. Using the relation Q = CV show that the voltages Vo and V are related by the relation, Vo = ( 1 + C/Co )V . 6. Plot a graph to obtain the value of C. 7. Mention any precautions you may have taken to ensure accuracy.
