The Wolfes Den
Hello everyone! Here we are getting antsy for spring weather. Maybe we did get lucky and have only a short amount of winter weather. I dont know about you but my lake still shows signs of needing rain and could use a bunch of it. With this copy of The Emerald Star being considered the valentine edition, I thought of writing about feelings of love. Do you know how mushy it would end up? Ive had an eventful few years and would not want to bring it to the surface again. Definitely. However, I did a lot of research about emotions and feelings that are sent from the brain which pulls on those heart strings. Can you imagine how much I read about an authors feelings of what they experienced? I mean, what the heck? He only wrote of his own experiences and what he witnessed friends go through. Sounds simple enough but I still read through it all hoping to find the answer, a one word answer as if there is one. After countless hours of reading I came to a conclusion (because of the headache), there isnt an answer why because each of us are different. Similar yet so different. Guess I should write about a book and then get my therapist to be a specialist to confirm certain aspects of those feelings I had and recall. Then it validates what was written and boy do I have some stories to tell. It seems that we all are experienced in the field of love at some level or another. Experts? Depends on who you ask nowadays. Just ask your best friend about a past love they once had. It would be hard to imagine what the number of stories that ended with great endings would be. I mean, if it were, wouldnt that be a tale to tell? Doesnt that get your mind going? Think of all those love romance movies youve seen over the years. You normally only remember a few good parts of that movie. It may have been special to you, because you may have experienced similar things that the character went through in that movie. Do you still? There were a few funny facts I want to share with you. Did you know?...People are more likely to tilt their heads to the right when kissing instead of the left (65 percent of people go to the right!). The oldest known love song was written 4,000 years ago and comes from an area between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers but what the name is I forgot if it said or not. Heres one to think about, that one in five long-term love relationships began with one or both partners being involved with someone else. Interesting, isnt it? Heres a few more. Falling in love can induce a calming effect on the body and mind and raises levels of nerve growth factor for about a year, which helps to restore the nervous system and improves the lovers memory. Love can also exert the same stress on your body as deep fear. You see the same physiological responsespupil dilation, sweaty palms, and increased heart rate. Men who kiss their wives in the morning live five years longer than those who dont. The tradition of the diamond engagement ring comes from Archduke Maximillian of Austria who, in the 15th century, gave a diamond ring to his fiance, Mary of Burgundy. People who are newly in love produce decreased levels of the hormone serotonin as low as levels seen in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Perhaps thats why its so easy to feel obsessed when youre smitten. According to mathematical theory, we should date a dozen people before choosing a long-term partner; that provides the best chance that youll make a love match. So, I guess if you want to play the numbers this would be true. Like most of you, Ill know it when I feel it. In todays disposable type of world, watch yourself for you may find yourself with someone somewhere in what you thought was a love never to end. Enjoy the love you have everyday you have the chance, for the may last forever all begins with you.

We have a lot of highway constructions and utility construction going on in our area now. Spring break is just around the corner and traffic will increase dramatically, sp be patient. They are supposed to install the bear crossing on Highway 331 in the Owls Head area. I wonder who will get the job of educating the bears to use the crossing under the highway. Some of our water customers were sent letters from a company Home Serve out of Miami, which basically is an insurance company. They want to sell you insurance on your water line going to your house. We recommend you throw this in the trash. Service lines into your house are not that expensive to repair or replace in our area. Hunting season is almost over, so I will get back to normal now. I had a wonderful season this year. I got to go to Pierre, South Dakota on a pheasant hunt back in November. They dont have many trees at all, but lots of grass and rolling hills. It is a beautiful part of the country! Our latest water line project is almost complete. Hopefully by May we will be pumping water to the Basin Bayou and Trout Creek areas. An OCSO investigator who survived being shot three times while working to take a violent fugitive into custody says the amount of support hes received has been overwhelming, including letters from across the country. Investigator Steve Hough says the December 9th, event in Santa Rosa County, when the suspect came out of the home on Camille Garden Circle firing guns in both hands, initially seemed like something out of a movie. He says he relied on his training and returned fire immediately. But when he was knocked to the ground and saw all the blood, he realized hed been shot in the face. In addition, two bullets also went through Investigator Houghs leg, injuries he was unaware of until he arrived at the Emergency Room. Hough, who is part of the OCSO Sexual Predator & Offender Unit, was working at the time as part of a U.S. Marshals Service team. Investigator Hough and his wife Tanya say they want to voice their extreme gratitude for the emotional and financial support offered by co-workers, family, friends, local citizens, and even complete strangers over the last two months. Its just been incredible, said Hough. The amount of support thats come in is still, to this day, its overwhelming. Its phenomenal. Hough and his wife Tanya say it has boosted their spirits and helped ease the painful process of recovery. Hough says he plans to return to his job as a law enforcement officer once hes gotten through all the planned surgeries. He also wants to be able to share his experiences with fellow law enforcement officers in hopes his experience may provide insights that would benefit others who also find themselves in a gunfight. He also wants to be sure those who go through such an ordeal realize that its critical to open up and talk about what happened with others, so that you can heal both emotionally and physically. Monday, Sheriff Larry Ashley awarded Investigator Hough the OCSO Medal of Valor for his actions of putting his own safety at risk to capture a violent fugitive. OCSO Investigator Todd Watkins also received the Medal of Valor and Investigators Jeff McGill and John Merchant were awarded Medals of Merit.
The streets of Hammock Bay were full of action on Saturday, January 21st as over 100 people ran the First Annual Apple Classic 5K and 10K Race to benefit education in Walton County. The first annual event was held by the Walton Education Foundation, Inc. with all proceeds directly benefitting classroom mini-grants, scholarships and programs that directly impact local children. This is our first year for this signature event and we were pleased to have over 100 runners join us, said Meredith Spence, Executive Director of the Walton Education Foundation, Inc. The Freeport High School Key Club members and students in the Take Stock In Children Program volunteered for the event and brought such excitement to the runners. In addition to student volunteers, Foundation board members and the Walton Area Chamber of Commerces Education Council worked hard to make this event a success. Plans are already underway for the Second Annual Apple Classic 5K & 10K Race to be held in January 2013.

FWC Reports
Sometimes neighbors can work it out. FWC Lt. Mark Hollinhead and Officer Danny Arnette met with a landowner after receiving a complaint from a subject who leases adjoining property in Okaloosa County. The meeting resolved the complaint and clarified property boundaries and easements. Lt. Hollinhead observed a vehicle traveling in Walton County across a field at night displaying a light in a manner capable of disclosing the presence of wildlife. The vehicle was stopped and a dead deer was observed in the back of the vehicle. Lieutenant Hollinhead confirmed the deer was taken from a tree stand during legal hunting hours. The light was displayed to inspect for hogs and damage they had caused. A warning was issued for no hunting license. Officer Danny Arnette contacted Officer Randall Brooks about a trespass complaint he received from a land manager. Officer Brooks responded and identified two subjects who were hunting the property in Walton County without permission. Officer Brooks inquired about turkey feathers he observed in the suspects golf cart and determined one of the subjects had shot two turkeys. Both turkeys were cleaned prior to Officer Brooks arrival. The turkey carcasses were retrieved and identified as hen turkeys. The subject was cited for taking turkeys during the closed season. The turkeys and a rifle were seized for evidence. Officer Randall Brooks observed an alligator hide in the backyard of a residence. No one was at the residence, but later in the day, a subject called Officer Brooks and admitted to killing the alligator. Arrangements were made to meet the subject later. Charges are pending.
KATIE
By M. Vreeland This pleasingly plump calico has been a resident of Alaqua Animal Refuge as far back as anyone can remember. Its hard to understand how such an extra special cat has been passed by for so long. Maybe its because Katie doesnt vie for attention like some of her more outgoing cabin mates. In keeping with the calico personality, Katie is gentle and affectionate, to say nothing of extremely beautiful. Her markings and her gorgeous golden eyes make her a standout in any feline community. Katie has graciously accepted her position as one of our most senior ladies, but she secretly yearns for a forever home with a special someone to love her and be loved by her. Guess you could say that Katie is one sensational senior in search of her soul mate. If you happen to be a sensational senior as well and are looking for a four footed soul mate of your own, Alaqua Animal Refuge has a program designed to help you adopt the pet of your dreams. But whether youre a senior of simply a lover of cats, Katie hopes with all her heart that she will be your dream pet. "Northwest Florida's Premier Animal Sanctuary and Adoption Center" Alaqua Animal Refuge is a non-profit, nokill shelter, located at 914 Whitfield Road, Freeport. We welcome you to visit all the adoptable animals at our beautiful ten acre sanctuary any Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Freeport Man Arrested for Residential Burglary and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer
The Walton County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) yesterday arrested Britton Wayne Bush, 34, of Freeport, Fla. for burglary and battery on a law enforcement officer. The WCSO investigation began Feb. 5 after deputies received information that Britton allegedly entered a Freeport residence without permission and threatened to "blow up the house with dynamite." During the incident, the woman's boyfriend advised Bush to leave the residence. When he did not comply, the boyfriend pushed Bush outside and then locked the door. Bush allegedly entered the residence again and the woman's boyfriend pushed Bush into the garage area of the residence as he continued to make threatening remarks to the residents. Deputies located Bush walking on County Highway 83A. During the arrest, Bush struck a deputy. A taser was deployed as a means of less-lethal force to affect the arrest. Bush was charged with one count of burglary of an occupied dwelling, a second-degree felony; one count of battery on a law enforcement officer, a third-degree felony; and one count of criminal mischief and property damage, a second-degree misdemeanor.
Wetlands will bloom again after pineland purple, rayless sunflower and dense gayfeather were planted to restore natural habitat. Since being named flowery land by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon in Easter 1513, the state has lost many wetlands or theyve been degraded by human impacts. In December, the Northwest Florida Water Management District hand planted about 32 acres of wet prairie and hydric pine flatwood wildflowers on wetland restoration sites in Washington and Bay counties. District Executive Director Doug Barr says they have purchased over 212,000 acres of wetlands, floodplain and upland buffers to protect and restore water resources. He says restoration of wetlands impacted before they purchased them is an important component of their land management program. First, natural water flow was restored to degraded wetlands, then natural fire cycles were introduced and shrubs were eradicated. After this, wiregrass and toothache grass were planted. However, studies indicated that key species were not present in the seed bank, probably due to years of fire suppression and habitat degradation. David Clayton, District Environmental Scientist says the species selected for reintroduction were based on importance and occurrence in high quality wet prairie and hydric pine flatwoods of the region. He says seeds from these species were collected from the Districts Garcon Point and grown by DEP and a private nursery. Clayton adds that many of these species have not been cultivated before. Clayton helps develop wetland restoration plans and monitors the Districts mitigation projects to offset wetland losses from highway construction and other development activities. Over 150,000 plants, 22 varieties of wetland wildflowers, grasses and sedges, were planted in islands on 15.5 acres at the Sand Hill Lakes Mitigation Bank, Washington County, and 17 acres at Ward Creek West, Bay County. The delicate plants were transported by refrigerated trailer and carefully set by hand. Clayton says by next spring and summer these plants should blossom with a showy variety of wildflowers and their seeds should spread to further populate the surrounding wetlands.

At the recent DeFuniak Springs City Council meeting, Kitty Whitney President/ CEO of the Walton Area Chamber reported on the work, including the Leadership classes for adults and students. The Chambers Education Council announces that Walton High School is now offering the Youth Leadership Class to its Junior and Seniors for the 2011/2012 School year. The Walton High School Youth Leadership inaugural class has twenty two students lead by Ms. Kim Handdrop. In this class, the students will participate in character and ethics building exercises, prepare for and execute a Mock Trial with Judge Kelvin Wells, learn the importance of professional appearance in the business world as well as proper interview techniques and complete the Kendall Life Languages Program, taught by Dan Marcinkowski. Walton County School Superintendent, Carlene Anderson says she is very excited about having the Youth Leadership class now available at Walton High School. She says there is a lot of talent among students, and they are anxious to tap into that talent for this program. The Youth Leadership Program was the brainchild of Superintendent Anderson and former President and CEO of the Walton Area Chamber, Dawn Moliterno. Now in its fourth year, it has been taught at South Walton High and Freeport High each semester. The goal of the program, which is supported by the Walton Area Chambers Education Council, is to offer this class in all four high schools in Walton County. Whitney says the Chamber is proud to be a part of the development and education of the future leaders of our community and look forward to growing the Youth Leadership program into all of our schools.

You may have the sinking sensation that someone or something is standing in your way, but don't just wring your hands in despair. Take this opportunity to reexamine your current path -- why you're doing what you're doing and the route you're taking. You can blaze a new trail, inspiring and amazing others while you're at it. Stop to affirm connections along the way. Listen carefully instead of chattering. Make sure you're getting credit where it's due as the week begins. There's a chance that good energy coming your way could be diverted. Call some positive attention to yourself. Your consciousness is expanding; you're seeing the connections and possibilities where others can't. Present your vision eloquently, and they'll love it. You may want to let someone else take charge of the plan. Choose someone who knows you best. Your usually limitless supply of enthusiasm and energy may run short as the week begins. Take time to recharge and choose with care the direction of your efforts. Fresh vigor is on the way, and you're likely to say exactly what's on your heart and mind. Your passion might take someone -- maybe even yourself -- by surprise now. Keeping relationships in balance requires attention. Are you ready to compromise? If you see something (or someone) you want as the week begins, your instinct is to lock onto it and never let go. While your passion's admirable, hold off on committing so completely. A new aspect or a different opportunity -- one that affects your worldview, and your hopes and dreams -- may well arise. If you share your expansive outlook with someone this weekend, a bond will grow. Learn more about yourself and others. Dig into something that fascinates you as the week begins. The stars augment your powers of observation and understanding now, so whether it's a work issue or a personal matter, you can expand your knowledge exponentially. Change and improvement are all around, especially in relationships. Clear those lines of communication, and open up your heart and mind. A challenge awaits you. Your softer, sensitive side may be less apparent than you think. Let those around you know about your needs and feelings, especially if those feelings are hurt. Be proactive about creating some good energy. Now's a great time to find a solution -- think about a good trade-off or an inventive compromise -- with a certain someone. If you have an action-packed plan for this weekend, well, you might want to scale back. Give that extroverted side a couple days off. That's when the stars will send you a golden opportunity to delve into things in a quieter yet very productive way. Reach out in family matters, too. Expect more exciting, action -packed times. Your always-bountiful charisma is even more apparent now, and sharing what's on your mind gets things going in a big way! Downplay your own angle and inquire into the perspectives of others.

(850) 892-8040 x 1188 (Spanish) Begin the day with a little meditation, yoga, a workout or just a calm walk. You have something to process, so be proactive about finding quiet headspace to do it in. You're back in your happy-go-lucky stride, and that confidence in your step guides splendid stuff to your path. Those around you can sense you're ready to say yes and see the potential. For a great date or just fun with friends this weekend, find a free outdoor concert, lounge in the park or take a nighttime stroll. Casual and low budget are perfect now. A friend, a partner or even your boss has a very helpful angle when it comes to making a choice as the week begins. Getting input shows your smarts, not weakness. Others -- maybe someone in particular -- can't help but pick up on your undeniable energy. Keep making your mark, you seem to get there so quickly as is.

Big changes are in place for the 5th Annual 30a St Patrick's Parade slated for
Friday March 16th. at 3.00pm. Forming on Scenic 30a near The Preserve, the parade heads westbound ending at Gulf Place. The event began as a small parade in 2008, and has now grown to a parade plus festival complete with green beer, Guinness sponsored banners, rocking entertainment and an Irish good time. 2012 is a banner year for the parade, bringing in highly acclaimed Celtic band Mickle-A-Do from Atlanta . The Grand Marshal of the parade will be Jac McTighe, who follows previous Grand Marshals Rick Talbert, Fire Chief, Commissioner Cecila Jones, Sheriff Michael Adkinson and Deputy Fire Chief Sean Hughes. Jac has also been Grand Marshal of the Atlanta St Patricks Parade. We are so delighted to have Mickle-A-Do this year, along with Jac McTighe as Grand Marshal, said Paul Vizard, event founder. The festival entertainment portion of the event has grown tremendously, and we expect a packed green at Gulf Place this year, so bring a chair and come early. We are also very grateful for our main sponsors of Gulf Place, Artists at Gulf Place, and businesses at Gulf Place, along with Andrews and Arnsdorf, and hope to add more closer to the event. At Gulf Place after the parade, will be food, drinks, and product vendors, face painting, and entertainment from 4pm onward with Irish Dancers, and Celtic Band Mickle-A-Do. Five lucky people will also find a pot of gold, as there will be 3 gold Celtic necklaces will be tossed to onlookers during the parade and 2 more at Gulf Place during the entertainment. One leprechaun will be slipping around the jigging feet. If he's caught, you just might find that pot o' gold at the end of the rainbow. Ft. Walton Beach's own Drake Irish Dancers will kick it up a notch and perform to their own brand of old country sounds, later to be joined by Mickle-A-Do for a jigging good time where merriment will bring the level up once more. Vendor table spaces are still available.
Chronicle
As the credits began to roll and I, along with everyone else in the theatre, began to rise and get out of my seat I heard a woman behind me say, That was the best movie I have ever seen..NOT. I seriously wanted to turn around and ask the woman what her problem was with this movie. Sure, the content is not realistic. Sure, teenage boys dont fly or have super powers, but isnt that the point of going to see a movie in the first place? To experience something extraordinary, something real life cannot give to you, to be entertained by the unrealistic? However, I did not say anything to the woman, I just kept my thoughts to myself, as I exited the theatre I overheard many other people making similar comments. That movie was so unrealistic. That would never happen. And so on. So, maybe I missed something, because I thought Chronicle was an exceptional movie. We all are familiar with the personal camera view point, from films like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Some people get queasy from the shaky camera view (that is the only down point I found to this movie), but it makes the movie feel more personal. Well, Chronicle went above and beyond the video camera concept. Instead of the movie being filmed from the view point of one singular camera the film was compiled from all the video camera footage around the events that made up the movie, from personal video cameras, hospital cameras, and news crew footage. It gave the film a more realistic feel, but let us go over this again, it is a movie, not an actual events. Chronicle is based on three high school aged boys who, at a party, discover an odd hole in the middle of the woods. The boys venture down the hole into a cave like tunnel, and find an odd thing that somehow gives the boys the ability to move things with their minds. The film never explains what exactly the thing is, or just how it gave the boys powers, but that really isnt important. One of the boys goes on a power trip and becomes the sort of villain of the film, yet because of the back drop, there is a type of sympathy found for the boy. I will not spoil the ending, but I will say, despite what I heard from the people around me in the theatre, go see Chronicle. If not for the story then just for the effects, which were spectacular! I cannot stress that enough, this film blew me away with the special effects. If you have any comments or recommendations email me at: beckerica2@gmail.com
In this edition we will go over a couple of tips on the barbecue. If you are one of those that replied to me about my article in the Emerald Star News , thanks for taking the time and your question. 1. Dont let those barbecue flare-ups put out the flame in your heart for outdoor grilling. There are several reasons why barbecues will suddenly flare up, turning your meat to ashes. Luckily, there are also several ways to fight back. Here are some suggestions: Move your meat away from the fire by raising the level of your grill. Some flareups are natural. By keeping your meat a bit higher, the flames may not reach the grill. Use a grade of meat with a bit less fat. Most of the time, its the dripping fat that causes the flare-ups. Use a marinade or barbecue sauce with less sugar. Sugar in the marinade not only attracts the flames, but will burn on the surface of the meat. Give the fire a bit less air to feed on by closing the vents down a bit. Camellia Festival & Heritage Day 2.
