Course Description: This is a course in expository writing with an emphasis on reading, critical thinking and writing that focuses on analysis and argumentation. Assignments are designed to aid students to generate ideas and write fluently by the end of the semester. Students will gain experience in the writing process, including revision. A source project is required with assignments in library research, note taking, outlining, and incorporating sources into a final draft. Texts: Between Worlds: Reader, Rhetoric and Handbook 7th Edition (Pearson) required Harbrace Essentials (Wadsworth Cengage) suggested Writing Research Papers, 2nd ed( Farmingdale State College) Pdf version available online at www.farmingdale.edu suggested COURSE RULES: 1. No assignment may be omitted. 2. Plagiarized work will receive a failing grade. Be advised that it is very obvious to English professors when something is not written in the student's style. 3. Absences or latenesss exceeding three (3) times will require a conference with the professor. Excessive absences/tardiness will directly affect your class participation grade. 4. Late work will be accepted only under special circumstances and only when the student has communicated the reason prior to the class when the assignment is due. A full grade deduction will occur for each day the assignment is not received on the day it is due. 5. There are no make-ups of tests except in the case of documented illness or hardship. Notification must be given prior to or on the date of the test. REQUIRED WORK: 1. 2. Regular attendance to class. Class Participation Successful completion of all assignments: Essays, Class Work, Blog Assignments, Homework, Source Project and all components , Midterm and Final (Source Presentation) Attendance at an on campus event preferably the Visitors Writing Program, with essay /formal review of the event with signature. ( see handout)
