CHAPTER I The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

Philippine is considered a third world country. In this status, it demonstrated backwardness in terms of modern technology and other field of scientific application. In the field of education, as a third world country, this means lack of modern school facilities and other gadgets as instructional devices. Cited with the insufficiency are the public schools. It is a mere fact that the budget of Philippine education is not enough to cover all the modernization of instruction. The teachers are only using pictures for their instructional devices. There are schools that even chairs are insufficient to school children. Instructional devices are vital in teaching. The concept of the topic cannot be transferred to the learners meaningfully without the use of some instructional devices. Though teachers are good in delivering the discussion, but without the aid of instructional devices, it not effective and efficient. In this global trend of education, the use of ICT devices is very important to easily facilitate the learning to the pupils/students. However, not all school can provide ICT devices to the school children. Moreover, teachers lack proper skills to handle the devices.

2 Teaching Science in general has many challenges specifically the Human Anatomy.Generally, physicians, dentists, physiotherapists, nurses, paramedics radiographers, and students of certain biological sciences, learn gross anatomy and microscopic anatomy from anatomical models, skeletons, textbooks, diagrams, photographs, lectures, and tutorials. The study of microscopic anatomy (or histology) can be aided by practical experience examining histological preparations (or slides) under a microscope; and in addition, medical and dental students generally also learn anatomy with practical experience of dissection and inspection of cadavers (dead human bodies). A thorough working knowledge of anatomy is required for all medical doctors, especially surgeons, and doctors working in some diagnostic specialties, such as histopathology and radiology. Human anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry are basic medical

sciences, which are generally taught to medical students in their first year at medical school. Human anatomy can be taught regionally or systemically; that is, respectively, studying anatomy by bodily regions such as the head and chest, or studying by specific systems, such as the nervous or respiratory systems. The major anatomy textbook, Grays, has recently been reorganized from a systems format to a regional format, in line with modern teaching. The effectiveness of teaching in this subject area depends of the strategy and approach of the teacher to convey its facts and concept.

3 Conceptual/Theoretical Framework

Human anatomy can be precisely defined as a complementary basic medical science, which deals with the scientific study of morphology of human body. In simpler words, human anatomy is the study of structure of human body. The researcher believed that teaching human anatomy needs appropriate teaching devices to be used for the effectiveness of teaching. This subject area has different components that need to be presented something in reality, if not this will not be absorb by the learners system. Regardless of the setting, a sound education in science emphasizes that science is both a way of knowing and a body of knowledge; it also emphasizes integrating scientific inquiry with scientific knowledge. Much is known about teaching science effectively to learners of all ages. This knowledge comes from research and scholarship conducted in both developed and developing countries. (John R. Staver 2007) The researcher firmly believed that teaching human anatomy using an ICT approach will increase the enthusiasm and performance level of the students in the field of science. This conceptualization is best presented through the following schema.

5 Statement of the Problem

This research study aimed to determine the performance level and the enthusiasm of the students in human anatomy using an ICT approach in the District of Naawan in the Division of Misamis Oriental during the School Year 2012-2013. Specifically, it seeks answer to the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the respondent in terms of: 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 1.5 Grade Level Age Gender Grades of Science, Mathematics & English Favorite Subject

2. Why do you like Science subject? 3. Why do you dislike Science subject? 4. Is their significant relation in teaching human anatomy using ICT approach considering the following variables? 4.1 computers 4.2 video presentations 4.3 PowerPoint presentations 4.5 on line researching

6 Hypothesis

The first, second and third problems are hypothesis free. To get the answer to the fourth problems, the following hypothesis is subject to statistical test at .05 level of significance. Null hypothesis. There is no significant relationship between the approach of teaching human anatomy with the performance and level of enthusiasm of students.

Significance of the Study

Results of this study may be of great help of the school system to assess the teaching approach of the teachers using ICT in human anatomy. On the part of the government, this will be a useful tool for the evaluation of the teachers additional privileges and benefits.

Scope and Delimitation This research study is conducted to the Public Elementary School Teachers and Pupils in the District of Naawan in the Division of Misamis Oriental, during the School Year 2012-2013. This study focused on the teaching of human anatomy using ICT approach to increase the performance of the pupils and the level of enthusiasm of the subject matter.

7 Definition of Terms For better understanding of the terms used in this study, they defined operationally to mean as follows:
