Inception

Wipro was established in 1945 as a vegetable oil manufacturer in Amalner, Maharashtra. The company at that time was known as Western India Products Limited.

Its main area of business was the production of Sunflower Vanaspati Oil, and later on, soaps and other consumer care products.

Evolution
During the late 1970s and 1980s, Wipro began to venture into the fledgling IT industry in India. It was the first to market indigenous Personal Computers in 1985. It was during 1990s that Wipro took its hardware expertise into the services arena, and was among the pioneers in developing the ODC(Offshore Development Center) concept (popularly known as the Global Delivery Model or GDM).

Headquarter of the company is at Bangalore, India. Wipro's Global IT business caters to more than 150 global Fortune 500 clients across financial services, retail, transportation, manufacturing, healthcare services, energy and utilities, technology, telecom and media. The company employ over 120,000 people from over 70 nationalities and 72 plus global delivery centres across 5 continents.

Azim H. Premji - Chairman Azim Premji has led Wipro since the late 1960's. Then a $2 million hydrogenated cooking fat company, Wipro Limited is today a $6 billion revenue IT, BPO and R&D Services organization with presence in over 50 countries.

Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting (WCCLG) Established in 1945, the first product to be introduced by WCCLG was vegetable oil, later popularized under the brand name 'Sunflower Vanaspati'.

In the subsequent period, other Wipro brands emerged such as Wipro Baby Soft and Wipro Safewash, toilet soaps like Santoor and Chandrika. The company is the owners of international brands like Yardley and Unza.
It also provide comprehensive lighting solutions with fittings like Smartlite CFL, LED, emergency lights and more.

Wipro Infrastructure Engineering Since 1976, this division of Wipro Limited, has been in the business of manufacturing high-quality hydraulic cylinders, truck cylinders, and their components and solutions. It represent the Kayaba, Kawasaki, Sun Hydraulics and Teijin Seiki range of hydraulic products in India. Its advanced manufacturing, product development and testing facilities have increased its annual production, making Wipro a leader in the truck tipping systems market in India. Wipro Infrastructure Engineering is now the second largest independent manufacturer of cylinders in the world. The company has also recently ventured into water treatment systems and solutions to cater to the needs of various industries.

The company is engaged in the research and development of advanced solutions for healthcare industry.
Wipro GE Healthcare is a highly successful joint venture, and part of GE Healthcare South Asia. Its products and services range from diagnostics to IT, helping healthcare professionals combat cancer, heart disease and other ailments.
