1. (a) What are the advantages & disadvantages of electrical energy over any other
type of energy source?
(b) In a house a bulb of 60 W, a geyser of 2 kW, a hot plate of 1 kW, an electric iron
of 500 W (all rated at 200 Volts) are connected in parallel with 200 V supply.
Suddenly voltage falls to 180 Volts, what will be the new power consumed by
all these appliances and current supplied by source, with reduced voltage.

2. (a) Explain the operation of DC motor.


(b) A DC shunt generator has an induced voltage of 127 V. When the machine
is on-load, the terminal voltage is 120 V. Find the load current, if the field
resistance is 150 Ω and armature resistance is 0.02 Ω. [8+8]

3. (a) Explain the working principle and operation of Transformer.


(b) The voltage ratio of a single-phase, 50 Hz, transformer is 5000/500 V at no
load. Calculate the number of turns in each winging if the maximum flux in
the core is 7.82 mWb. [8+8]

4. (a) With neat phaser diagrams explain the effects of various armature reactions.
(b) A 3-Φ, 2.5 MVA alternator has a rated terminal line voltage of 6.6 kV. The
star connected stator winding has an effective resistance of 0.073 Ω and syn-
chronous impedance of 4 Ω/ph. Calculate the voltage regulation for 80 % load
& UPF. [8+8]

5. (a) List the different types of instruments used for making voltmeters and amme-
ters.
(b) Prove that deflection in a Permanent Magnet Moving Coil Instrument is di-
rectly proportional to operating current. [6+10]

6. (a) Explain the operation of a centre-tap full-wave rectifier with input and output
waveforms.
(b) Derive the expression for efficiency of a full-wave rectifier. [8+8]

7. (a) Explain the working of a SCR when


i. gate is open
ii. gate is positive wrt. cathode.
(b) Explain SCR as a HWR with the mathematical analysis. [8+8]

1. (a) Explain the advantages of electrical energy over the other type of energy
sources.
(b) A resistance of 5 ohm is connected to a 100 V supply. If this resistance
increases the temperature of 1 liter of water in 10 minutes by 1o C, how much
time it will take to increase temperature of 2 liters of water by 1o C if voltage
increased to 200 V. [8+8]

2. (a) In detail explain the classification of DC generators based on their excitation


& winding connection.
(b) The lap wound armature of a 6 pole, 220 V, generator and runs at 300 rpm.
Calculate the useful fluxes per pole if the number of armature conductor cor-
responds to each pole are 1200. What would be the change in flux if armature
is wave wound? [6+10]

3. (a) Explain the working principle and operation of Transformer.

5. Explain the different methods by which controlling torque is provided in indicating


instruments in detail with appropriate diagrams. [16]

6. (a) Derive the expression for efficiency of a full-wave rectifier.


(b) A FWR using two diodes, the internal resistance of diode is 20Ω. The trans-
former rms secondary voltage from center-tap to each end of secondary is 50V
and load resistance is 1k Ω, Find [8+8]

7. (a) Explain the operation of a npn transistor.


(b) Explain transistor as an amplifier with a neat circuit diagram. [8+8]

1. (a) What are the different types of elements used in electrical circuit? Explain
the importance of each of them.
(b) From the basic definitions obtain the expression for power & Energy: [8+8]

2. (a) Explain the characteristics of cumulative & differential compound generators.


(b) A DC shunt generator has shunt field resistance of 120 Ω. Is it supplying a
load of 6 kW at a voltage of 240 V. If its armature resistance is 0.2 Ω & iron
losses are 200 W, calculate the efficiency of generator. [8+8]

3. (a) Explain the relation between the efficiency of transformer & power factor.
(b) A 100 kVA, 50 Hz, 440 / 11000 V single phase transformer has an efficiency
of 98.5 % when supplying full load at 0.8 pf lagging and an efficiency of 99
% when supplying half full load at unity pf. Find the full load iron & copper
losses. [6+10]

4. (a) Explain the construction of Induction Motor.


(b) An 8 pole, 3-Φ alternator is coupled to a prime mover running at 750 rpm. It
supplies an induction motor which has a full load speed of 960 rpm. Find the
number of poles of IM and slip. [8+8]

5. (a) What are the different types of torques required in the operating of indicating
instruments?
(b) List the different types of instruments used for making voltmeters and amme-
ters.
(c) Give the constructional details and working of any one type of Moving Iron
instrument. [4+6+6]

6. (a) Explain the operation of a center-tap full-wave rectifier with input and output
waveforms.
(b) In a center-tap circuit having input voltage 230V using step down transformer
having turns ratio 3:1, the diodes are assumed to be ideal. Find the [8+8]
i. dc output voltage
ii. peak inverse voltage
iii. rectifier efficiency.

7. (a) Explain input and output characteristics of CE configuration with necessary


diagrams.

(b) An electrostatic cathode ray tube has a final anode voltage of 600V. The
deflection plates are 5cm long and 1cm apart. The screen is at a distance of
20cm from the centre of plates. A voltage of 30V is applied to the deflection
plates. Calculate [8+8]
i. velocity of electron on reaching the field
ii. acceleration due to deflection field.
iii. deflection produced on the screen in cm and
iv. deflection sensitivity in cm/V.

1. (a) Explain Electric Circuit? Explain Open circuit & Short Circuit.
(b) An aluminum wire 7.5 m long is connected in parallel with a copper wire 6 m
long. When a current of 5 A is passed through combination, it is found that
the current in aluminum wire is 3 A. The diameter of aluminum wire is 1 mm.
Determine the diameter of copper wire. Resistivity of copper wire is 0.017 µ
Ω m and that of aluminum is 0.028 µ Ω m. [6+10]

2. (a) Explain how EMF is induced in self excited generators.


(b) A 4 pole DC generator has a lap wound armature with 42 slots. The rated
output voltage of generator is 400 V when supplying a current of 150 Amp at
a speed of 1000 RPM. The resistance of armature circuit is 25 milliohms and
brush drop is 0.75 volts/brush. The flux per pole is 50 mWb. Calculate the
effective number of conductors per slot. [8+8]

3. (a) Obtain the expression for converting the transformer values from one winding
to other.
(b) A 50 kVA, 4000/400 V, 50 Hz, single-phase transformer has the following
winding resistances and leakage reactance: R1 =2.2 Ω, R2 =0.012 Ω, X1 = 3.4
Ω, X1 = 0.44 Ω. Calculate, equivalent resistance&reactance referred to HV
side. [8+8]

4. (a) Explain term Maximum torque, Full load torque, Starting torque, No-load
torque.
(b) An 8-pole, 50 Hz, 3-Φ slip ring IM has effective resistance of 0.08 Ω/phase.
The speed correspond to maximum torque is 650 rpm. What is the value of
resistance to be inserted in rotor circuit to obtain maximum torque at starting?

5. (a) How can the range of Moving Iron voltmeter be extended?


(b) A 20V Moving Iron voltmeter has a resistance of 300Ω and an inductance
of 0.12H. Assume that voltmeter reads correctly on dc. What will be the
percentage error when the instrument is placed on 15V ac supply at 100Hz.

6. (a) Derive the expression for efficiency of a full-wave rectifier.


(b) In a center-tap circuit having input voltage 230V using step down transformer
having turns ratio 5:1, the diodes are assumed to be ideal. Find the [8+8]
