1. A flywheel having a mass of 35 Kg was allowed to swing as pendulum about a knife-


edge at inner side of rims shown in figure 1. If the measured period of oscillation was
1.22 seconds, determine the moment of inertia of the flywheel about geometrical
axis. Inner radius is 0.3m and outer radius is 0 .4m. [16]

2. Analysis of the oscilloscopic record of a rap test on a machine mounted on isolators
reveal that the rate of decay of the amplitude is 2.5% per cycle when the amplitude
is 1.5 cm and 4 % when the amplitude is 0.4 cm. Assume both coulomb as well as
the viscous damping are present in the system. Determine the magnitude of the
damping ratios. [16]

3. Write short notes on following:

(a) Dynamic coupling


(b) Static coupling [16]

4. Explain the working of a vibrometer. A vibrometer having a natural frequency of


31.4 rad/sec is employed to measure the vibration of a machine part. If it gives
a reading of 0.15 cm., what is the amplitude of vibration of the part? Operating
frequency is 200 rad/sec. Assume no damping. [16]

5. Derive the Hamilton principle for deriving the equation of motion for a continuous
system.

6. A uniform string of length 10 m and a large initial tension 1000N, stretched between
two supports, is displaced laterally through a distance 1.0m at the centre as shown
in figure6 and is released at t = 0. Find the equation of motion for this string. [16]

7. An Engine weighing 182 kgf is to be supported on four helical springs. When the
engine speed is 900 r.p.m there is a primary vertical distrubing force of maximum
value 31.8 kgf due to the unbalanced reciprocating weights. Assuming that the
engine vibrates in the vertical direction mH neither horizontal nor angular move-
ment, find the stiffness of each spring in kgf/cm of deflection to limit the maximum
total periodic force on the foundations to 2.27 kgf. What will be the amplitude of
vibration of the engine when speed is 600 rpm? [16]

8. Find the time period of the spring-mass system when mass is displaced by a distance
x in the direction of c spring as shown in figure 8. [16]

1. (a) The connecting rod shown in figure1. is supported at the wirst pin end. It
is displaced and allowed to oscillate. The mass of the rod is 5 kg and c.g. is
20 cm from the pivot point O. If the frequency of oscillation is 40 cyles per
minute, calculate the moment of inertia of the system about its c.g. [16]

2. A transformer of 3000 kg mass is mounted on the isolators embodying a coil spring
and a coulomb damper. Design the isolator, so that natural frequency of the system
is 4.5 Hz. And an initial displacement given to the transformer dies out in three
cycles. [16]

3. Write short notes on:

(a) Static coupling


(b) Frequency meter. [16]

4. A vibrometer having the amplitude of vibration of the machine part as 4mm end
e=0.2, performs harmonic motion. If the difference between the maximum and
minimum recorded value is 10mm, determine the natural frequency of vibrometer
if the frequency of the vibration part is 12radian per sec. [16]

5. Derive the Hamilton principle for deriving the equation of motion for a continuous
system.

6. The damping constant c of the dashpot shown in figure6 is given by


c = 6πµl/h3 [(a − h/2)2 − r2 ][(a2 − r2 )/(a − h/2) − h]

(a) Determine damping constant of the dashpot for the following data: µ =
0.3445Pa-s, l = 10 cm, h= 0.1 cm, a= 2 cm, r = 0.5 cm.
(b) Find the variation of damping constant c when
i. r is varied from 0.5 cm to 1.0 cm.
ii. h is varied from 0.05 cm to 0.10 cm.
iii. a is varied from 2 cm to 4 cm. [16]
7. (a) Explain vibration due to Engine unbalance?
(b) A verticle single cylinder engine weighing 545kgf is carried on elastic beams
whose static deflection under the weight of the engine is 0.965 cm. Calculate
the frequency of free vibration in a vertical plane. The engine is now run at
130 rpm. The reciprocating parts weigh 45.5 kgf stroke is 17.8cm and length
of the connecting rod 35.6 cm. Calculate from first principles, the verticle
movements of the engine due to
i. Lack of primary balance
ii. Lack of secondary balance. [16]
8. A four cylinder engine whose shaft is coupled to a damper at one end and a generator
at the other end has a flywheel mounted on the shaft b/w the engine and the
generator. The values of rotor inertias and shaft stiffness are given in Figure 8.[16]

1. Sphere of dia D floats half submerged in water. If the sphere is depressed slightly
and released, determine the period of the vibration. What is this period when D
= 1 meter. [16]

2. What is damping, explain the importance of the critical damping and find the
expression for the logarithmic decrement. [16]

3. Derive an expression steady state and transient displacement for forced harmonic
motion. [16]

4. A vibration measuring device is used to find the displacement, velocity and accel-
eration of a machine running at 120rpm. If the natural frequency of the instrument
is 5 Hz. and it shows 0.004 cm what are the three readings? Neglect damping. [16]

5. Derive the Hamilton principle for deriving the equation of motion for a continuous
system.

6. (a) Derive the differential equation of motion for the flexural vibration of a beam
of uniform cross section
(b) Hence show that the frequency equation of such a cantilever beam of length L
is given by cos ki L . cosh ki L = -1 where ki = (ω/a)1/2 and a= (EI/ρA)1/2
[16]

1. Find the natural frequency of vibration of a half solid cylinder when slightly dis-
placed at from equilibrium position and released as shown in Figure 1. [16]

2. A spring mass dashpot system consists of a spring of stiffness 343 N/m. The mass is
3.43 kg the system is displaced 2 cm beyond the equilibrium position and released.
Find the equation of motion for the system if the damping coefficient of the dashpot
is

(a) 137.2 N-sec/m,


(b) 68.6 N-sec/m
(c) 13.72 N-sec/m [16]

3. Write short notes on following:

4. A small reciprocating machine weighs 25kg and runs at a constant speed of 6000
r.p.m. After installation the forcing frequency was found to be too close to the
natural frequency of the system. Design a dynamic vibration absorber if the nearest
frequency of the system is to be at least 20% from the excitation frequency. [16]

5. A torsional system has an inertia of 1.176 kg-m2 and a torsional stiffness 235 N-
m/rad. It is acted upon by a torsional excitation at 150 cpm. Determine the
parameters of the absorber to be fixed to the main system if it is desired to keep
the natural frequencies at least 20% away from the impressed frequency. [16]

6. A uniform circular shaft of length L is deflected by a force P applied at a point


distance c from one end. Find the resulting transverse vibrations when the load is
suddenly removed. [16]

7. Using the D’Alembert’s principle derive the differential equation of “vehicle vibra-
tion” with single degree freedom for free vibration and obtain the solution and
discuss under the cases.

(a) Over damping

8. A shaft of negligible weight 6 cm diameter and 5 meters long is simply supported


at the ends and carries four weights 50 kg each at equal distances over the length of
the shaft. Find the frequency of vibration by Dunkerley’s method. Take E=2×106
Kg/cm2 . [16]
