Course Title: Texts:

Syllabus Jesus Christ: A Sure Foundation (Weeks 1 6) Rightly Dividing the Doctrine of Baptisms (Weeks 7-13)
Holy Bible. I will be using the King James Bible. If you want to use another translation, you are perfectly welcome. Seeing however that we will be looking in great detail at various verses, I do think that it would be a good idea if you also had a KJV. A Sure Foundation Notebook. Please bring a three-ring notebook as I will be handing out many notes. Also, I expect you to take notes on the teaching so that you can look it up later. A. Impart unto the hearers a love, hunger and reverence for Jesus Christ and His Word. B. Equip the hearers to be able to recognize and withstand false doctrines. C. Lay a foundation of Gods Word in the life of the learners so that they may build upon it and go on unto perfection fulfilling the purpose God has called them to. A. To show from the Scriptures that Jesus Christ is our Sure Foundation. B. To do this we will examine: Who Jesus Is Why He Came What He Did (His Life & Ministry) The Practical Aspects of His Being our Foundation A. Bill Oden B. Dan Green C. James Hudson A. Lecture B. Class Discussion C. Bible Study Assignments D. Music This being a church and not a Bible School, there will be no grades. Let me say however that does not make this course any less important than if you were going to a Bible School, paying thousands of dollars and being graded. Often grades can motivate students to do well as they competitively vie for honors and recognition. They may get the highest mark, but that does not guarantee they will get understanding from the LORD. If you will follow the suggestions Solomon gave to his son in Proverbs 2 and apply them to what you learn here, you will be guaranteed (from God) to get something far more valuable than any school or professor can guarantee.

Jesus the Son of God
When we say that Jesus is the Son of God, do we know exactly what we mean? Or perhaps I should phrase it Does what we mean agree with what the Bible means? When we talk about the Incarnation, the Trinity, the Deity of Christ, etc. we often have different concepts about this whole subject. When we say Trinity, some people mean Three in One and some people mean One in Three, and some of us don't know the difference. This is definitely an eternal, infinity truth that goes far beyond our limited human ability to comprehend. Paul states in 1 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. This truth of God being manifested in the flesh (the Incarnation) is without controversy, that is to say there is no contradiction in it but it is certainly a great mystery. We have little clichs we throw around to try and help us comprehend: Jesus the Godman, or Jesus was all God and all man, or Jesus was the Son of God and the Son of Man. We still scratch our heads and wonder what we mean. We know that Jesus was not just a man, but when we get around to talking about Him being God many are confounded. He is certainly not God the Father (no matter what Isaiah 9:6 says) and if indeed He is God there must then be two Gods (or three if you count the Holy Spirit); yet we know that cannot be true because of the plethora of verses that tell us there is one God (Dt. 6:4; Zech 14:19; Mk. 12:29, 32; Gen. 41:25; Mal. 2:10; James 2:19). So somehow in the mystery of all this, we have taken refuge in the title, Son of God. It certainly makes Him more than just a man, but leaves a distinction from God the Father. Let us just briefly look at what the Bible does not mean and what it does mean when It uses the phrase, Son of God. When the Bible uses the phrase Son of God about Jesus, it DOES NOT MEAN that Papa God and Mamma God had a baby boy God. No, Jesus is not some sort of Biospiritulogical offspring. When the Bible uses the phrase Son of God about Jesus, it DOES NOT MEAN that Mary is Mamma God. She is the human mother of my Lord, Elizabeth said, but she is human, Blessed art thou among women, not among Gods. Also when the Bible uses the phrase Son of God about Jesus, it DOES NOT MEAN that Jesus is less than God. When the Bible uses the phrase Son of God about Jesus, it DOES MEAN that JESUS IS GOD; that JESUS IS ONE WITH GOD; and that JESUS IS EQUAL WITH GOD. Consider the following Scriptures: John 10:22-42 and John 5:16-18. Jesus by calling God his Father (10:28, 29) or in essence the Son of God (10:36), and by saying that he and his Father were ONE, was understood to be making HIMSELF GOD, although they perceived Him as just a man. In John 5:17 when Jesus referred to God as His Father (Son of God) the Jews sought to slay him because by doing so He made Himself EQUAL WITH GOD. Through the terms FATHER and SON, God reveals to us the relationship that Jesus (God manifested in the flesh had with His Heavenly Father giving us an example that we should follow in his steps, submitting and serving God. In this sense then could it be said, my Father is greater than I (Jn. 14:28). As Michael Card says, That is the mystery, more than you can see. Give up on your ponderings. Fall down on your knees.
