NEW RELEASES
THE SEASONS FRESHEST FILM FARE, FROM EXPLOSIVE HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTERS TO THE BUZZ-WORTHIEST INDIE DRAMAS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN.
LOOPER
THE AMBASSADOR Dir. Mads Brgger Opens 8/31
This darkly comic, genre-bending piece of gonzo journalism from international provocateur Mads Brgger (filmmaker of Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner RED CHAPEL) rips the corroded lid off the global scheme of political corruption and exploitation happening in one of the most dangerous places on the planet: the Central African Republic. Armed with a phalanx of hidden cameras, black-market diplomatic credentials and a bleeding-edge wit, Brgger transforms himself into an outlandish caricature of a European-African consul. As he immerses himself in the life-threatening underworld of nefarious bureaucrats, Brgger encounters blood diamond smuggling, bribery, and even murder -- while somehow managing to crack amazing razor-sharp barbs at every step along the way. From each absurdly terrifying/hilarious situation to the next, THE AMBASSADOR is a one-ofa-kind excursion from the man whom The Huffington Post has called the most provocative filmmaker in the world.
The prohibition era in America was a time for crime and violence to thrive. LAWLESS, from THE PROPOSITION writer and director team of Nick Cave and John Hillcoat, looks at this grisly period in our nations history by focusing on the true story of three bootlegging brothers in Virginia in 1931. Shia LeBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jason Clarke play the trio of moonshiners who have made quite the business out of defying the law. Now their operation is suddenly in jeopardy as a diligent Virginia deputy is making the brothers his main target. If Hillcoats previous films THE PROPOSITION and THE ROAD were any indication, LAWLESS, which also stars Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska and Gary Oldman, should be an interesting and wellcrafted take on one of the darkest times in American history.

NEW RELEASES
THE MASTER Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson Opens 9/21
The theatrical release of any new P.T. Anderson movie basically marks a new chapter in cinema. And no project of his has been as wildly anticipated -- and scrutinized -- as THE MASTER. PhilIp Seymour Hoffman is Lancaster Dodd, a self-made, self-absorbed and self-doubting paragon of intellect; a magnanimous socialite whos prone to thunderous episodes. His writings are devoted to exploring mankinds untapped potential, to the point that he seems intent on elevating himself and everyone around him to a superhuman level. Into his expanding circle stumbles Freddie Sutton (Joaquin Phoenix), a living storm of total self-destruction. The two men appear opposite in every way, but their meeting ignites a persevering mutual fascination that threatens their perceptions, their outside relationships, and even their personal well-being. Hoffman and Phoenix are said to both give the all-time best performances of their already-incredible careers. Andersons script and direction, completed with stunning 65mm photography, create the type of viewing experience that feels even more authentic and compelling than actual life.

ALAMOSCOPE
A NEW AND CONTINUING SERIES DEDICATED TO EXHIBITION OF FILM ON THE LEGENDARY 70MM FORMAT.
70mm: WEST SIDE STORY Dirs. Jerome Robbins & Robert Wise, 1961, NR, 152 min, 70mm RZ 8/24-8/26, 8/28
This world-class musical is inarguably among the great classics of cinema, but its much-ballyhooed drama, romance and daredevil dance sequences are matched by the incredible 70mm photography sweeping across the mighty cityscape. Get ready to experience the maximum benefits of your senses when this massive cinematic titan is presented in its fullest 70mm glory on our big big screen! The Sharks and The Jets will thrill and fill your eyes and your ears, as this blue collar Romeo & Juliet tale fills your heart to bursting. Its an experience that has rattled and rewarded audiences for generations, and now were bringing it out in the biggest and best way possible.
70mm: INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE Dir. Steven Spielberg, 1989, PG-13, 147 min, 70mm RZ 8/31-9/5
Im starting to think that Nazis are just no fun at all. I mean, it was bad enough when they tried to steal the Ark of the Covenant, but now theyre up to more crud. After Hitlers lil homies kidnap our heros eminent father (played by Sean Connery), Indy is forced to grab his trusty whip and jump right back into the Nazibattling business. In his final great adventure (sue me), he travels across the globe, narrowly avoiding death at every turn, leaping from tanks to planes to impossible battles, and facing one of the most powerful legends in history. This is truly a perfect action movie, the kind that they dont make anymore...especially on 70mm, which will have every pulse-pounding moment exploding off the screen and into your cerebral cortex.

ALAMOSCOPE
70mm: BARAKA Dir. Ron Fricke, 1992, NR, 96 min, 70mm RZ 9/8, 9/10, 9/12
BARAKA is a gorgeous, non-verbal journey that brings the farthest corners of the entire world to the cinema screen. Director Ron Frickes stunningly beautiful film, photographed in large format negative is a kaleidoscopic narrative that spans the monasteries of Tibet, the volanoes of Hawaii, the shocking poverty and glowing humanity of Calcutta, the ruins of Angkor Wat and more - a total of 152 locations in 24 countries. BARAKA is one of the most acclaimed and transcendent viewing experiences you will ever have.
70mm: THE MASTER Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson, 2012, R, 70mm RZ Opens 9/21
From BOOGIE NIGHTS to THERE WILL BE BLOOD, the theatrical release of any new P.T. Anderson movie basically marks a new chapter in cinema. Hollywoods flimsy veil of bleached smiles and superhero spandex is thrown aside to illuminate uniquely told stories of flawed humans destined for triumph and/or agony. And no project of his has been as wildly anticipated -- and scrutinized -- as THE MASTER. PhilIp Seymour Hoffman is Lancaster Dodd, a selfmade, self-absorbed and selfdoubting paragon of intellect; a magnanimous socialite whos prone to thunderous episodes. Hoffman and Phoenix are said to both give the all-time best performances of their already-incredible careers, with equally strong work from Amy Adams as Dodds brilliant wife/business partner. Andersons script and direction, completed with stunning 65mm photography, create the type of viewing experience that feels even more authentic and compelling than actual life. By all accounts, THE MASTER stands to be one of the rarest accomplishments possible: a perfect movie.
70mm: GHOSTBUSTERS Dir. Ivan Reitman, 1984, PG, 105 min, 70mm RZ 9/14-9/17, 9/19, 9/20
Its possible that GHOSTBUSTERS is the worlds only universally adored movie. If you dont love it, youre obviously not a human being. Spectre-destroyers Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis and the vastly under-appreciated Hudson collectively defined everything we enjoy in 80s cinema, unleashing a supernatural adventure that busts funnybones as well as ghosts. Together, the four hopped in a converted ambulance and made an entire decade safe for hilarity, action, and transdimensional demon combat. But you knew that already, as this timeless classic is burned into our minds eternally...but NOW it can be seen in paranormally perfect 70mm, which will bust your skull open like a lightning bolt shot straight outta Gozer!
70mm: CLEOPATRA Dir. Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1963, NR, 251 min, 70mm RZ TBA
This astonishingly huge, lavish historical epic broke box-office records. It was a TITANIC-sized success. But the budget and cost overruns were so high that it still did not break even. Heads rolled in Hollywood over CLEOPATRA and it became a catchphrase for bloated filmic spectacles, but all these years later, its still magnificent to see. Like the pyramids, it is a gaudy monument to bloated egos, and also like the pyramids, it will fill you with wonder at the hugeness of its scale. Elizabeth Taylor, who naturally plays the title character, and Richard Burton, who plays her tragic lover Marc Antony, were the two greatest stars of their age. Walter Wanger surrounded his two shining jewels with millions of dollars in sets, locations, props and dancing elephants. Its huge, and hugely vulgar - fortunately, its also fabulously colorful and entertaining on as grand a scale. Taylor and Burton are magnetic, and their chemistry is palpable. CLEOPATRA is gigantic, grand and monstrous all at once. If you love Hollywood, do not miss it.
70mm: PLAYTIME Dir. Jacques Tati, 1967, NR, 155 min, 70mm RZ TBA
Writer/director Tati expertly transforms the screen into a manic comedic typhoon of outrageous inventions and blaring colors in his single greatest, grandest and most earthshakingly hilarious foray into fearless filmmaking. In PLAYTIME, Monsieur Hulot (played by the director) stumbles through the terrifyingly modernized streets of Paris, where ludicrous architecture and zany Rube Goldberg-esque mantraps cause increasingly complex goofball crises. Its very truly one of the most stunning accomplishments in the history of movies; an impossible spectacle thatll unravel your brain while you laugh yourself inside out. PLAYTIME was shot in 70mm, and well be experiencing it in a big, big, bright, recently restored 70mm print, where Tatis visionary madcappery will explode into your senses and never leave your skull. Unforgettable, unbelievable, and unmissable!

MUSIC MONDAY
PUMP UP THE VOLUME Dir. Allan Moyle, 1990, R, 102 min RZ 10/1 & 10/8
Oh Christian Slater, if only youre career had turned out as promising as we all thought it would back in the late 80s/early 90s, back when you were THE poster boy for cooler-than-thou suburban angst. That hair! That Nicholson drawl! You gleamed cubes and rocked black trench coats like nobody else could! (And others did try... they just looked abysmally lame) And in this sadly underrated teen drama from 1990 you ruled the airwaves as a wait for it PIRATE RADIO DJ broadcasting scathing Lenny Bruce-esque rants n raves all night long in between cuts from The Pixies, the Descendants, Bad Brains, and Concrete Blonde. How gawddamed cool was that? Cool enough to be treasured/required VHS viewing for those who came of age in the 90s. Credit goes of course to Slater for pulling such off great, crush-worthy popcorn idol of anti-authoritarianism, but much credit probably also belongs to director Allan Moyle. Hes managed to capture the zeitgeist of underground(ish) teen culture in not one, but three classic films with iconic soundtracks: PUV, TIMES SQUARE (1980), and EMPIRE RECORDS (1995). Not bad for a kind of old, kinda bald white guy. (George Bragdon) Print Courtesy of the
Sundance Collection at the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
HAMLET IN ROCK Dir. Rudolf Volz, 2008, NR, 120 min RZ 10/15
We guarantee that youve never experienced the Bard like this before. HAMLET IN ROCK is light years beyond your typical adaptation of a classic Shakespearean tale. It is HAMLET imagined as an in-your-face, no-holds-barred rock n roll musical, set in OUTER SPACE. The singular vision of German mathematician and software designer turned writer/director/composer Rudolf Volz, HAMLET IN ROCK features a whiny goth Hamlet, Queen Gertrude with a bright red, phallic crown, and 24 stunningly original rock ballads belted into the cosmos. And did we mention that the gravedigger takes the form of a three-eared, otherwise unexplained space rabbit? The outer space theme is more implied than actual, suggested by revealing pleather outfits generously adorned with chevrons and an ethereal atmosphere meant to suggest the abandoned innards of a spaceships dark and dreary hull. In space, they say no one can hear you scream... Thats only because they cant hear you over the wailing and shredding of HAMLET IN ROCKs electric guitar! Featuring a post-show Skype Q&A with writer/director/composer Rudolf Volz! (Sam Prime)
PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE Dir. Brian De Palma, 1974, PG, 92 min RZ 10/22 & 10/29
Its not surprising in a way that PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE has continued to lurk like a black-clad avenger in the shadows and catacombs of good film canon. Though cinematically daring and virtuosic, its pretty weird, and the themes of pervasive cultural death-worship may have cut a little deep at the time. So while it doesnt take its place on the high wall of honor with other 70s classics, some of us proudly display it in the trophy cases of our hearts. Brian De Palma plunders every era and style of cinema for his effects. The great Paul Williams (who also wrote the music) stars as Swan, a record producer and talent impresario. Hes Mephistopheles by way of Phil Spector. De Palma favorite William Finley is tweaked perfection as Winslow Leach, a young composer who signs a contract with Swan - not in ink of course - and suffers the consequences. Lovely Jessica Harper (SUSPIRIA) is the romantic interest in this electronic-gothic masterpiece. The musical numbers set a new high water mark for tastelessness and excess. A confetti cannon loaded with disposable pop music, black magic, sex, love, loss and pain - dont miss it! (Lars)

TERROR TUESDAY
SPONSORED BY VULCAN VIDEO EVERY TUESDAY NIGHT AT THE RITZ FOR JUST THREE BUCKS!
XTRO
PIRANHA 2: THE SPAWNING Dir. James Cameron (for real), 1981, R, 84 min, 35mm RZ 9/11
There are a handful of performers that end up on our screen on a regular basis; booming, frail ham John Carradine, barrel-chested sweat machine Aldo Ray and the corpselike-but-still-kicking Lance Henriksen. While the first two spent time in the actual limelight of Hollywood, the latter is a talented dramatic force who has served almost his entire career in the salt mines of fame, eking out a modest living as a cyborg (KNIGHTS), bikerlord (STONE COLD), vampire (NEAR DARK) and enraged hillbilly (PUMPKINHEAD). But 1981 was his shot at the bigtime, working with future richest-director-of-all-time James Cameron on a boundary-leaping epic of...flying fish. Sadly, the airborne follow-up to Joe Dantes classic wouldnt break any box office records, though its still one hell of an assault, with the fanged beasts breaking all laws of nature in the name of a full-on beachfront Hawaiian holocaust. Cameron would later succeed with another death-at-sea story, but I guarantee that PIRANHA 2 is the superior film. Or at least its theme song wont make blood squirt out of your ears. (Zack)
PIECES Dir. Juan Piquer Simon, 1982, NR, 89 min, 35mm RZ 9/4
Nudity and sex are already disgusting enough without getting a chainsaw involved. Yet that doesnt stop the mysterious maniac at the local college campus from wielding his power tools in an effort to create the perfect patchwork ragdoll from all of the most pleasing available female parts. Released at the decline of TEXAS CHAINSAW-mania, this all-meat scumbuster managed to gain plenty of notoriety of its own. This was largely due to what one critic described as its relentless dedication to violent, unapologetic misogyny. But if that fuming journalist could only have looked past that one aspect of the film, shed have found a bold new world of graphic gut-spewing, absurd plot de-evolutions, authentically demented performances (including the married exploitation screen team of Christopher & Lynda Day George) and some shockingly unforgivable ching-chong racism. Oh well. Her loss. (Zack)
SPECIAL TOP SECRET TERRORTIME!!! Dir. Unknown, 198X, NR, 9X min, 35mm RZ 9/18
A few weeks back, Lars, Daniel and I made a tendon-ripping journey to the midwest, where we managed to rescue roughly 1300 35mm film prints from the jaws of certain death. It was back-breaking, flesh-ripping, agonizing torture, but we did it fall for you. Among these rusted, cobwebbed treasures are several outrageously rare horror and/or exploitation titles that youll be seeing at upcoming Weird Wednesdays and Terror Tuesdays, but were ripping the lid off the batch with an incredibly rare print of this universal crowd-pleaser that were probably not even legally allowed to screen! I cant reveal much about the plot without getting arrested, but lets just say that this little bundle of gristle is destined to tickle your gorybone. (Zack)

TERROR TUESDAY
SOCIETY Dir. Brian Yuzna, 1989, R, 99 min, 35mm RZ 9/25
Anyone whos ever worked a day in their life already knows that rich people are shit. They cant help it; too many first class flights and chocolate-dipped strawberries have softened their bodies and minds to an animal state. But it wasnt until this late 80s protoplasmic battle cry that we were encouraged to unmask the wealthy for the nauseating scum that they are. RE-ANIMATOR producer Yuzna slapped his rump into the directors seat for one of the most disturbingly goopy class wars in cinematic history, as a teenage boy unmasks the dark, drippy secrets of the American elite. If you think the housewives of Beverly Hills are vomitous -- and they are -- youd better slug back a gallon of Pepto before stepping into the theater tonight. Old Money is about to get Butt Nasty. (Zack)
SOUTHERN COMFORT Dir. Walter Hill, 1981, R, 106 min, 35mm RZ 10/9
A dozen weekend warriors on Army Reserves maneuvers in the Louisiana bayou fall into the bad graces of the local yokels. What follows is an intestine-blasting battle for survival as the armchair army men fire fully automatic training blanks at the most highly skilled, heavily armed, kill-crazy swampdwellers this side of the Pecos. Walter Hill made SOUTHERN COMFORT two years after his undisputed classic THE WARRIORS, and I submit that this right here is the superior film: DELIVERANCE + RAMBO injecting pure caffeine into its eyeballs. The last 10 minutes will have you dancing in your seat like a fetus on a hot skillet. Featuring an incredible cast including Powers Boothe (RED DAWN), Fred Ward, Keith Carradine and several other familiar Hollywood luminaries who dont mind getting disemboweled, spiked, shot in the face, mangled by bear traps, blown to pieces and otherwise treated like bologna slices with targets on them. (Zack)
KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE Dir. Stephen Chiodo, 1988, PG-13, 88 min, 35mm RZ 10/23
The most forehead-exploding big-budget scifi/horror/comedy of the 80s, written and directed by the special effects wizards behind CRITTERS and the Large Marge monsterface scene from PEE-WEES BIG ADVENTURE. A circus tent-shaped meteor crashlands in the forest, releasing an army of neon-colored, face-painted intergalactic creatures who mummify humans in cotton candy cocoons and slurp their sweetened blood through crazy straws. These diabolical bozos mow through the populace using only the most entertaining means: invisible cars, carnivorous shadow puppets, popcorn blasters, decapitating boxing matches, hand-to-spinalcord ventriloquism and much, much more. The only people with the guts to stand up to these extraterrestrial sillybones are two kind-hearted teens and the horny local ice cream vendors. Watch for thundering mans-man actor John Vernon as the homophobic small town cop who just isnt gonna put up with any of this space clown shit. All this topped off with a theme song by pioneering goofpunk band The Dickies. Not to be viewed by anyone who fear clowns or enjoying life. (Zack)
KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS Dir. Bud Cardos, 1977, PG, 97 min, 35mm RZ 10/16
William Shatner battles a million man-eating tarantulas in a movie directed by a guy named Bud. Do I really need to write anything else here? From killer whales to meat-seeking ants, there were plenty of movies made in the late 70s about sinister critters, but only a handful of them are as pitch-perfectly crazed as this downhill slide into mankinds extermination. The octopedal force on display here is enough to have you standing on a stool in your kitchen and squealing for weeks. And, as expected, the reliably unhinged Shatner gives this arachnoid megawave some stiff competition when it comes to scattering across the screen all willynilly with hairy limbs a-flyin. Failing him in his ever-losing war against fuzzy little dudes is the great Woody Strode (ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST) and THE CANDY SNATCHERS Tiffany Bolling. So stop by a spider-phobic friends house, tell them youre treating them to a night at the movies and watch them never speak to you again for as long as you live. (Zack)
THE (80s) BLOB Dir. Chuck Russell, 1988, R, 95 min, 35mm RZ 10/30
Even my grandma has noted the staggering number of rotten horror remakes Hollywood has squeezed out in its post-1990 quest for Supreme Worthlessness. But there was a short time when a monster movie re-imagining meant a bigger, bloodier and -- in this case -- blobbier version of a beloved favorite, upping the ante for vomitous wildness in ways unthinkable during the golden age of silver screen homicide. Flesh-ripping, oozing renovations of THE THING and THE FLY brought new life to old horrors, but the goopiest and most whiplashing update of all was unsung masterpiece THE BLOB. In fact, Im just gonna say it: its better than the original, and youll be forced to agree when you see this 80s-fied descendant of Steve McQueens bag-o-jelly nemesis in action. Were talking a veiny, acidic, unstoppable ingestion machine, capable of crushing vehicles, pulling chubby Italians into tiny drainpipes and performing the ultimate act of heroism: killing children. SPONSORED BY I LOVE VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE RITZ FOR JUST THREE BUCKS!
MS. 45
HARD TICKET TO HAWAII Dir. Andy Sidaris, 1987, R, 96 min, 35mm RZ 9/5
The late Andy Sidaris is legendary for his bikini-laced sexy adventure movies set in exotic locations. HARD TICKET TO HAWAII is his magnum opus. When a pair of beautiful undercover agents intercept an illegal diamond shipment, the bad guys get mad and soon theres a war brewing between the beautiful L.E.T.H.A.L. (Legion To Ensure Total Harmony & Law) agents and their ghetto-level James Bond villain adversaries. As if that were not a potent enough cocktail, Sidaris drops in a gigantic mutated killer serpent who strikes without warning. As you may have guessed, this is not a movie that makes its points with talk. Its ACTION, SEX, ACTION, SEX, ACTION, SEX all night long. Special thanks to producer Arlene Sidaris for making this screening possible. (Lars)
THE GUY FROM HARLEM Dir. Rene Martinez, 1977, R, 86 min, 35mm RZ 9/19
From the director of THE SIX THOUSAND DOLLAR NIGGER comes a new kind of hero, and a new kind of continuity. Trying to follow the plot of this movie is like trying to ride a drunken llama to Cuba. One minute, the John Shaft-inspired hero is guarding an African princess against assassins, the next minute she disappears completely from the plot and a whole other plotline emerges about a kidnapped girl. What happens to the princess? Who are all these characters who just show up without explanation? Why ask me? The important thing is, its cheap and brutally incompetent, and thats good news for people who occasionally like to laugh at giant projected images on a screen. With Wild Man Steve in a supporting role, and a bunch of really hateful white folks wearing toupees that look like they were purchased at Everythings A Dollar. (Lars)
VOODOO BLACK EXORCIST Dir. Manuel Cano, 1974, R, 88 min, 35mm RZ 9/26
Ubiquitous Spaghetti Western badass Aldo Sambrell (who is not black) plays a member of the ancient (black) Haitian Royal family who is killed for various bad deeds and mummified. During the course of a Caribbean pleasure cruise his sarcophagus is violated and he emerges to claim the woman he loves (also played by a white person in chocolatey black face makeup). There are a lot of things that are historically inaccurate, absurd and just plain Wrong with this movie, but who am I to criticize? If you walk through the doors of this theater, up the stairs and into an auditorium where you know a film called VOODOO BLACK EXORCIST is playing you deserve whatever the fates have in for you. Accept your destiny. (Lars)

WEIRD WEDNESDAY
THE WITCH WHO CAME FROM THE SEA Dir. Matt Cimber, 1976, R, 83 min, 35mm RZ 10/10
A perfect illustration of the sort of freedom filmmakers could have in the arena of low-budget films. This ragingly weird movie about a waitress psychological disintegration into castration mania could certainly have never been made in a Hollywood studio context and its a gigantic anomaly even among drive-in films. Millie Perkins (THE SHOOTING, DIARY OF ANNE FRANK) plays the tormented woman whose repressed memories of childhood abuse begin to surface in some pretty undesirable ways, compelling her to pick up a razor and go after some of the men she sees on TV everyday. While it was marketed (when it was marketed at all) as a psychotic slasher film, it has as much REPULSION and PERSONA in it as PSYCHO. Written by Robert Thom (writer of WILD IN THE STREETS and Perkins husband) and directed by the underrated Matt Cimber (THE BLACK SIX, HUNDRA). An unforgettable moviegoing experience. (Lars)

Free Kids Club: THE LAST UNICORN Dirs. Arthur Rankin, Jr. & Jules Bass, 1982, G, 92 min, 35mm VL 9/1-9/3
(PART OF OUR SUMMER OF 1982 SERIES!) Weary of being alone in the vast forest, unicorn Amalthea (voiced by Mia Farrow) begins to wonder if shes the last of her kind. Following a rumor, she joins forces with feeble wizard Schmendrick (Alan Arkin) to look for the mystical Red Bull, a creature known to hunt and imprison unicorns. In order to walk unnoticed among men, Schmendrick magically transforms Amalthea into a beautiful woman. Together they embark on an adventure into the dark land of King Haggard, the man rumored to control the Red Bull. Based on Peter Beagles novel of the same name, THE LAST UNICORN is a bright, colorful tale of love and loss. The film also features the vocal talents of Jeff Bridges, Christopher Lee, and Angela Lansbury. Complete with an over-the-top soundtrack by the classic-rock band America, THE LAST UNICORN is perhaps the high point of directors Rankin and Bass film careers.

This September, to celebrate the beginning of the new school year, BANGARANG! is taking you back to in the most fun way imaginable: the Adam Sandler classic BILLY MADISON. If you guys play your cards right, we might even have a Snack Pack or two waiting for you. I AM THE SMARTEST MAN ALIVE! BANGARANG!!!!!! (Greg MacLennan)
Fantastic Fest presents: BREATHLESS Dir. Ik-Joon Yang, 2008, NR, 130 min SL 9/5
Sang-hoon is a stone-cold, foul-mouthed debt collector. While the loan company he works for is modest, the amount of pain he unleashes on those who owe is not. Extreme violence against them is a day-to-day operation for Sang-hoon. His merciless behavior doesnt stop at work as he will beat on unsuspecting strangers and old men he passes on the street. Life is going along as usual for Sang-hoon until he meets Yeon-hue, a teenage girl whose courage and verbal wit take Sanghoon by surprise. The two have share an emotional connection (Yeon-hue suffers from a violent home life) and soon Yeon-hue brings out the compassion and love that Sang-hoon hides deep within himself. BREATHLESS, starring writer/director Ik-joon Yang, is filled with a rare combination of amazing fight sequences, brutal violence, humor and, because of the odd, but effective pairing of Sang-hoon and Yeon-hue, an unexpected poignancy. Dont miss this mesmerizing and impressive import from South Korea.
SUNRISE w/ live score by My Education Dir. F.W. Murnau, 1927, NR, 94 min, 35mm SL 9/9
SUNRISE is one of the all-time classics of American silent cinema. Directed by German expressionist F.W. Murnau, SUNRISE is a morality tale on the indiscretion of a married farmer. Tempted by the lure of the bustling cityscape in the form of a vacationing woman, the farmer is seduced into a lurid affair. His humble wife and child none the wiser, the romantic tryst soon spirals out of control when the woman from the city suggests that he sell the farm and drown his wife, so that they might start a new life together. What follows is a mans personal battle between an honest life of little means in the countryside or a life ill-begotten in the modern grid of the city. Winner of 3 Academy Awards (Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Picture -- the first awards of their kind at the inaugural Academy Award presentation on May 29th, 1929), SUNRISE is presented on 35mm with an original live score courtesy of local Austin favorite and friends of the Drafthouse, My Education. Dont miss this very special screening!

CINEPHILE
Big Screen Classics: HAUSU Dir. Nobuhiko Obayashi, 1977, NR, 88 min VL 9/12 & 9/13 : SR 9/19 & 9/20
No one can deny that Japan has established a legacy of skull-bursting cinematic hysteria. And in 1977, every last goddamn ounce of the nations unleashed insanity was distilled into one single film. The story follows teenage girl Oshare, a doomed fantasist living in a garish, neon-pastel world. She brings her friends to the remote home of her twisted, gnarled aunt, who is actually a restless, manic demonbeast. Even her fluffy cat is in on some super-unnatural hijinks. And thats only the beginning...it doesnt take long for the house itself to reveal its true nature as a living, breathing, virgin-devouring reality-annihilator. This aint your mamas haunted house...anyone unlucky enough to pass through its doors is faced with man-eating pianos, villainous mirrors and even a flying, ass-biting human head. The craziest movie ever made by the country that does crazy best. (Zack)
Zzang!!!: REVENGE OF THE NERDS Dir. Jeff Kanew, 1984, R, 90 min, 35mm RZ 9/16
Easily the finest of the post-ANIMAL HOUSE party meltdowns! Robert Carradine, Anthony Edwards and Curtis Booger Armstrong play over-the-top bozos that, in the hands of amateurs, wouldnt come off as likeable as they do here. But these are the masters of the form. This film has everything one would expect from a solid frat comedy: panty raids, full frontal nudity, beer guzzling and pot smoking, but all presented in a way that marked the dawn of a brave new era of geek appreciation. This film has a shocking amount of heart, which is probably why its legendary. The rousing end speech at the pep rally is the most moving scene in any wacky comedy ever. This film lit the eternal flame of nerd pride, and will always remain a beacon for the nearsighted, bookish and sexless. (Bryan)
JURASSIC PARK Dir. Steven Spielberg, 1993, 127 min, 35mm RZ 9/28-10/1
Almost 20 years after it first blew the minds of audiences Steven Spielbergs JURASSIC PARK still remains one of the most awe-inspiring films from the cinematic king of inspiring awe. At the time the films CGI was the most realistic and amazing moviegoers had ever seen, yet what makes the film still hold up to todays lofty technological standards was the combination of CGI with animatronics. The result is a film that feels nostalgic without looking dated. The story, part sci-fi, part horror, part action, is pure Spielberg. The film also has one of the best and most underrated scores the great John Williams ever composed and a cast that features the unlikely combination of Sam Neil, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Samuel L. Jackson and (Sir) Richard Attenborough. So do yourself a favor and see Spielbergs unrivaled dinosaur epic on the big screen in beautiful 35mm.
Aint It Cool News, Austin Chronicle & Toy Joy present Free Kids Club: THE TIME MACHINE Dir. George Pal, 1960, PG, 103 min, 35mm SL 9/29

A fearless scientist creates a vehicle that allows him to travel forward and backward through the veils of the centuries, encountering great changes in society and futuristic civilizations beyond the infinite possibilities of mans greatest imaginings! Marooned in a bizarre future, our hero H. George Wells (!!) is forced to battle a subterranean army of cannibaloid albino creatures to save the last members of the human race! Directed by special effects wizard George Pal and filled with magical action, wild science, dazzling imagery and incredible monsters! THE TIME MACHINE is by far the most incredibly exciting time youll ever have...with TIME!!
Video Hate Squad: SPLATTER FARM...UNCUT! Dir. The Polonia Brothers, 1987, NR, 75 min, VHS RZ 9/30
NOTE: While SPLATTER FARM has been released in DVD, the ONLY way to see the full, incredibly offensive version is on the impossibly hard-to-find VHS. And WE GOT IT! Identical twins Mark and John Polonia were undisputed Master Warriors from the mid-80s Video Age, a time when only the most iron-hearted visionaries gathered the resources to create feature-length homemade horror. And SPLATTER FARM is their masterpiece, placing them alongside the penniless pioneers of BLACK DEVIL DOLL FROM HELL, BOARDING HOUSE and VICTIMS as Pure Trash Royalty. Here, the twins star as Alan and Joseph, two mustachioed city boys on a rural getaway to their aunts farm, where the semi-catatonic junior caretaker has been taking liberties with the local populace. A bold creator that was taken from us too soon, the great John Polonia will be immortalized tonight in necrophilia, incest, cannibalism, man-rape and good old-fashioned intestinal squirting! (Zack)

CINEPHILE
AMADEUS Dir. Milos Forman, 1984, PG, 161 min SL 10/4
Golden Hornet Project (GHP) has launched a project to complete Mozarts unfinished Requiem, in collaboration with composers from the rock, hip-hop, video game and avant-garde music scenes. To support this monster project, which will be completed and presented to the public in 2014, we are hosting a series of screenings of the film AMADEUS over the next two years. Each screening will include a live choral performance of The Requiem work in progress performed by members of Texas Choral Consort with GHP co-artistic directors Peter Stopschinski and Graham Reynolds in attendance. Based on the stage play by Peter Shaffer, AMADEUS tells the tale of Salieri, a famous composer who is tormented and ultimately goes mad because of his jealousy of the infinitely more talented Mozart. His utter mediocrity when compared to Mozart is too much to bear, and Salieri hatches a plan to kill the brilliant composer.
A TOWN CALLED PANIC Dirs. Stphane Aubier & Vincent Patar, 2009, NR, 75 min RZ 10/12-10/14
Its hard to believe that a stop motion animated Belgian film about a reckless Cowboy, his best friend the Indian, a super cool horse, and larcenous underwater gill-men could cause all the hard-boiled, seen-it-all programmers at the Alamo and Fantastic Fest to fall all over themselves, but that was the case when A TOWN CALLED PANIC screened at our festival in 2009. We laughed so hard and long at this movie that we happily jumped through many hoops to bring it to Austin a few years ago. But we can only be separated from this brilliant piece of animated filmmaking for so long, so were bringing it back and giving you (and ourselves) another chance to see this charming, funny and inventive film.
BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING - THE WAYNE WHITE STORY Dir. Neil Berkeley, 2012, NR, 93 min RZ 10/14 & 10/15
A funny, irreverent, joyful and inspiring documentary featuring the life and current times of one of Americas most important artists, Wayne White. Raised in the mountains of Tennessee, Wayne White started his career as a cartoonist in New York City. He quickly found success as one of the creators of the TV show, PEE WEES PLAYHOUSE, which led to more work designing some of the most arresting and iconic images in pop culture. Most recently, his word paintings, which feature pithy and often sarcastic text statements crafted onto vintage landscape paintings, have made him a darling of the fine art world. BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING chronicles the vaulted highs and the crushing lows of a commercial artist struggling to find peace and balance between his work and his art. Acting as his own narrator, Wayne guides us through his life using moments from his latest creation: a hilarious, biographical one-man show.
Zzang!!!: THE MONSTER SQUAD Dir. Fred Dekker, 1987, PG-13, 86 min, 35mm RZ 10/14
Only one 80s masterpiece can claim the title of The Killingest, Swearingest, Monster-est Kids Movie of All Time. Ill let you guess which film it is, but Ill give you a hint: Its THE MONSTER SQUAD, dammit!! A group of horror-obsessed adolescents are joined by the Frankenstein Monster to combat Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy and a Swamp Creature. Childhood innocence is forever lost in a blinding storm of silver bullets, sharpened stakes and enormous explosions. This child-sized chunk of anti-monster justice was unleashed on cinemas with such savage fury that few recognized its true greatness, but it has since been rediscovered as the classic it truly is! So grab your tickets before the full moon and be here for this show or well kick you right in the...genitals. (Zack)
Sommelier Cinema: BRAM STOKERS DRACULA Dir. Francis Ford Coppola, 1992, R, 128 min RZ 10/17
Francis Ford Coppolas big screen version of DRACULA is the most faithful adaptation of Bram Stokers classic novel. In 1992 the film was a huge box office hit. Over time though, like most of Coppolas work in the 90s, DRACULA has fallen off in popularity. Its a shame because the film is so expertly and boldly crafted. Coppola uses a very controlled and elegant visual style, which emphasizes both the erotic and gothic elements of Stokers story. The set and costume designs are beautiful, original and ambitious. All of the first-rate technical craft is met with great performances by Gary Oldman, as the infamous, titular vampire, Anthony Hopkins, and Winona Ryder. Even Keanu Reeves shows some acting chops. While the character of Dracula is usually portrayed as a campy vampire caricature, Coppolas film brilliantly and successfully looks for the darkness and tragedy behind one of the most famous literary characters ever.

Rolling Roadshow: QUADROPHENIA Dir. Franc Roddam, 1979, R, 117 min, 35mm 10/19
Its scooter-ridin mods against motorcycle rockers in this vision of The Whos swinging 1960s London. Jimmy (Phil Daniels) hates his job, detests his parents, and seeks a life led at his own convenience and by his own rules. He finds this outlet every evening cruising on the streets of London, where he truly comes alive, unburdened by his working class responsibilities. The good life doesnt last long, however, as Jimmys life all too suddenly becomes a downward spiral into abject fear and paranoia. Cinematic teenage rebellion fueled by the soundtrack of The Whos legendary 1973 concept album of the same name, QUADROPHENIA is a vividly-realized hypnotic and symphonic daydream, a modern musical classic. Big Screen Classics: AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON Dir. John Landis, 1981, R, 97 min SR 10/22-10/25 : VL 10/29-11/1
John Landiss cult classic, feels as clever and original today as it did over 30 years ago. The story follows two college students, Jack and David, who walk down the wrong dark road while backpacking through the British countryside and are attacked. While Jack is killed, the surviving David must put the pieces together and figure out what happened. Originally given the distinction by potential investors as too scary for a comedy and too funny for a horror film, AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON defied generic definition when it was initially released. The confusion was understandable as the cleverness and intelligence of Landis script is matched by the influential and brilliant makeup effects of Rick Baker. The combination makes this lycanthropic tale one of the pioneering films in the horror-comedy genre.
Bangarang!: DEAD ALIVE Dir. Peter Jackson, 1992, UR, 104 min, 35mm RZ 10/24 : VL 10/28
Sure Ash had a chainsaw hand and a boomstick, but Lionel has a shoulder mounted LAWNMOWER! A lot of people like to argue that the 90s were a wasteland of bad horror movies. Well Im here to tell you YOU ARE WRONG! Peter Jackson burst on to the scene with this relentlessly insane gore-fest that has more guts, puss and bodies splattering on its walls than you could hope for. What starts off as a shy love story of an awkward man who lives at home goes completely off the rails as soon as that Sumatran rat-monkey bites his mom and the zombies start piling up. Zombie babies will rip out of heads, guts will slop over every square inch of the screen, giant animatronic mothers will bleed at five gallons per second and a kung fu fighting priest WILL kick ass for the lord. Grab some pudding, strap yourself down and prepare for THE BLOODIEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME! BANGARANG! (Greg MacLennan)
Rolling Roadshow: THE BURBS Dir. Joe Dante, 1989, PG, 101 min, 35mm 10/27
I want to kill everyone. Satan is good. Satan is our pal. THE BURBS, one of the most hilarious horror/comedies of the 80s, remains the only major Hollywood studio comedy about suburban cannibalism! When Tom Hanks still had a pulse, he and Joe Dante led unsuspecting audiences into a deeply bizarre cul de sac of flesheating, body-thieving and suspected demonology, all with a banana peel slapstick flair that made everything feel as good-timey as an ice cream picnic with grandma. But the deep black waters of feral occultism run just beneath this fountain of yuks, with the spectre of death lurking around every turn. Hanks is joined by Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern and Corey Feldman in uncovering the most sinister secret to ever sully the manicured lawn of the American dream. (Zack)
Super Cutz: 100 BEST KILLS Dirs. Various, 120 min VL 10/27 : SR 10/31
Join us as we sit in a theater together and turn the spotlight on the Grim Reaper of movieland as he disembowels, detonates and decapitates again and again and again. Were not watching for character development or thematic resolution or any of that garbage; just the most life-defying acts of human extermination in film history. No man, woman, child or puppy is spared as the equalizing fist of mortality crushes cinemas best and worst into quivering red chowder. Tear yourself open and unleash the KIIILLLLLLLL!!!!!
Video Hate Squad: HACK-O-LANTERN Dir. Jag Mundhra, 1988, R, 87 min, VHS RZ 10/28
Young Tommy is visited by his grandfather (Hy Pyke), a devil-worshipping pumpkin salesman who bestows him with a mystical amulet. Fifteen years later, the boy has grown into a rock-obsessed junior hellmaster, still under the thumb of his oppressive, occult grandpap. Tommys misanthropic individuality is illustrated by a distaste for shirts, a pickled fetus shrine, and Dio-flavored voodoo hallucinations. Like so many movies of its era, HACK-O-LANTERN is a triumph of limited means. The gore is powerfully presented, the production quality is inexplicably strong and a few of the performances are worthy of some kind of award. Well, one anyway, courtesy of camera-lovin superham Hy Pyke; a bargain-basement spazz who unleashed similar gumption via small roles in equally discounted features SLITHIS and LEMORA: A CHILDS TALE OF THE SUPERNATURAL. As the satanic, incestobsessed Grandpa, Pyke is given his first starring role and takes it to an illogical zenith, playing every syllable and facial twitch for the back row of the straight-tovideo living room audience. UNIVERSAL MONSTERS
IN CELEBRATION OF UNIVERSALS 100TH ANNIVERSARY WELL BE SCREENING SOME OF THE STUDIOS BEST LOVED AND MOST FEARED MONSTER MOVIES.
Exclusive, one-of-a-kind CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON 3D posters from MONDO will be available to purchase at this screening. Join us for a brand new 3D restoration of one of the most genuinely fun monster movies ever made. When a team of scientists set off on an excursion up the Amazon to find traces of prehistoric life, they get more than they bargain for - an awesome amphibious gill-man, who stalks them and falls in love with a beautiful female scientist on board. Full of iconic sequences, the most famous of which is the oddly romantic underwater swimming sequence where the gillman follows his lovely prey. If youve never seen this in 3D, and few of us under the age of 70 have, you should stop reading this right now and mark that calendar! (Lars)
CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON 3D Dir. Jack Arnold, 1954, NR, 79 min SL 10/17, 10/20, 10/21
Exclusive, one-of-a-kind MUMMY posters from MONDO will be available to purchase at this screening. Boris Karloff delivers a performance for the eons as the title character in this still-underrated Universal horror. Though shocking at times, its surprisingly (for many) reserved and atmospheric. Universal made a whole raft of mummy movies in the 40s that feel like silly monster cartoons, but the original MUMMY is tasteful, romantic, weird and tragic in ways that are beautifully cinematic. At its heart is the immortal Karloff, an actor of rare power and subtlety. His performance here is among his best, and thats saying something. (Lars)
THE MUMMY Dir. Karl Freund, 1932, NR, 73 min RZ 10/21 & 10/22
Aint It Cool News, Austin Chronicle & Toy Joy present Free Kids Club: ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN Dir. Charles Barton, 1948, G, 83 min, 35mm SL 10/27
This classic, chaotic Halloween gut-buster is gonna make you feel like your whoooole skeleton is MADE OUTTA FUNNYBONES! One of the top comedy teams of the last wazillion years embark on a zanied-up tour of some non-Transylvanian destinations, where they nevertheless run up against the most hair-raising assortment of quasi-human creaturoids to ever spook up the silver screen. I mean, sure, yes...they meet Frankenstein. But along for the rampaging ride is none other than Lon Chaney as the original Wolfman and the mega-menacing Bela Lugosi as the Mighty Mayor of all Monsterdom: Count Dracula himself! This time around, these iconic heart-stoppers are more intent on giggle-making than blood-sucking, so grab your garlic, order a holy water shake and nestle in for a goofily ghoulish guffaw-go-round!
THE WOLF MAN Dir. George Waggner, 1941, NR, 70 min RZ 10/28 & 10/29
Exclusive, one-of-a-kind WOLF MAN posters from MONDO will be available to purchase at this screening.
Fast moving and suspenseful, this is one of the second wave of Universal Horrors. Full of the atmosphere that characterizes the first batch of their iconic monster films, with a jolt of the energy and momentum that the studio brought to their 40s output. Lon Chaney Jr. will forever be known as Lawrence Talbot, an unfortunate man bitten by a gypsy lycanthrope who undergoes a frightening transformation when the moon is full. Universals horror queen Evelyn Ankers is a lovely and welcome presence and Claude Rains does the heavy acting as Talbots father. Featuring the unforgettable Maria Ouspenskaya, who delivers the classic bit of Hollywood folklore: Even a man who is pure at heart and says his prayers by night.... (Lars)

GIRLIE NIGHT
CELEBRATING THE MUCH-LOVED BUT OFTEN NEGLECTED GENRE OF SLUMBER PARTY MOVIES. AT GIRLIE NIGHT, YOU CAN SQUEE AND SWOON WITHOUT SHAME. SERIOUSLY.
Girlie Night: ROMY AND MICHELES HIGH SCHOOL REUNION QUOTE-ALONG Dir. David Mirkin, 1997, R, 92 min LC 9/5 : RZ 9/11 & 9/18
ROMY AND MICHELES HIGH SCHOOL REUNION pretty much ruined my own ten year reunion. Sure, I laughed with old friends and waxed nostalgic about old times, but did I make a grand re-entrance in a shiny mini dress with Venus pumping in the background? No. Did I tell off the A Group, get complimented by a fashion editor at Vogue and then perform an incredible dance number with a millionaire to Time After Time? NO I DID NOT. Did I then leave in a helicopter while the entire high school class waved me good-bye to the beat of Heaven Is a Place on Earth? UM, ONLY IN MY SWEET, SWEET DREAMS. Romy and Michele are an inspiration to us all, and to show them the appreciation they deserve, Girlie Night is partnering up with the Action Pack to give you the full quote-along experience, complete with props like Gummi Bears (for your diet) and subtitles for all of your favorite lines. Make sure to wear your shiniest outfit, and come ready to cheer on a duo so dynamic, they managed to take their own yearbook photo together. (Sarah Pitre)
Man Crush: OUT OF SIGHT Dir. Steven Soderbergh, 1998, R, 123 min SL 9/12
It was only a matter of time before we dedicated a Man Crush screening to George Clooney. His grin alone can melt every womans panties in a hundred mile radius, and his cockiness is the envy of dudes the world over. Hes one smooth operator, and no film exemplifies that better than OUT OF SIGHT. As Jack Foley, Clooney plays a bank robber who escapes from prison and winds up stuck in the trunk of his getaway car with U.S. Marshall Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez). After shes released, Sisco remains in hot, and I mean HOT, pursuit of Foley, and who can blame her? Every woman in America wants to hunt down George Clooney for the crime of devastating them with his charm, but Jennifer Lopez might be the only one sexy enough to catch him. Also starring the excellent male specimens of Don Cheadle, Ving Rhames and Dennis Farina, this film, based on the novel by Elmore Leonard, is guaranteed to give you plenty of opportunities to swoon, fist pump and worship at the altar of Clooney. Afternoon Tea: THE SECRET GARDEN Dir. Agnieszka Holland, 1993, G, 101 min SL 9/15
In this special Mother Daughter edition of Afternoon Tea, we invite you to bring along an important lady in your life to enjoy this glorious adaptation of the childrens classic. Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is, to put it nicely, a total brat, but when she is sent to the English countryside after the death of her parents, she slowly learns to appreciate life, both of the human and plant variety. Filled with gorgeous landscapes and a delicious amount of family secrets, this film is the perfect excuse to celebrate our mothers and daughters while sipping on tea and nibbling on treats. Well turn the theater into our own secret garden as we fall in love with Dickon (Andrew Knott), roll our eyes at Colin (Heydon Prowse) and live in respectful fear of Mrs. Medlock (the almighty Maggie Smith). (Sarah Pitre)
Girlie Night: AMELIE Dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001, R, 122 min LC 10/3 : SR 10/9: RZ 10/16 & 10/23
JAIME AMELIE! JADORE AMELIE! BEACOUP! I wish I knew more French, but I dont, so instead Ill force myself to describe my passion for this film in plain old boring English. The first time I saw AMELIE, it immediately changed all of my life goals. Who cares about things like career advancement and saving for retirement when you could be a waitress in Paris and spend your days improving peoples lives through the power of whimsicality? In fact, if I didnt love AMELIE so much, I would kind of hate it because WHY CANT I BE HER?!!! Shes so, so pretty, and she lives in the most charming apartment, and shes super good at pranks and she even solved a mystery that led her to TRUE LOVE. Amelie, is, in a word, my hero. And for this months Girlie Night, we can all pretend to be her for one magical evening. Feel free to bring along your favorite garden gnome as we journey together into Amelies fantastical, romantical, absolutely wonderful world. As the French would say, LE SIGH. (Sarah Pitre)
Fun Fun Fun Fest presents: Man Crush: RYAN GOSLING RZ 10/8 : VL 10/9 : SL 10/25
Hey girl, we all know that Ryan Gosling is one amazing dude. Hes a brilliant actor and a soulful romantic. Hes cuter than a puppy, and his muscles look like theyve been photoshopped. Hes Gods gift to cinema-- nay, the world, and the city of Austin was lucky enough to bask in his golden presence during Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011. This year, with the festival right around the corner, were holding on to those sweet, sweet memories by hosting a celebration of all things Gosling. Featuring everything from his adorable presence on the Mickey Mouse Club to his compelling yet unbelievable performance in LARS AND THE REAL GIRL (I mean, seriously, how could Ryan Gosling NOT have a girlfriend?), this special Fun Fun Fun Fest edition of Man Crush will take you on a magical ride through Gosling-land. Swoon over his sexy ways in THE NOTEBOOK and feel the heat of his piercing gaze in DRIVE without having to deal with scenes featuring people who arent Ryan Gosling. This show will be 100% concentrated Grade A Gosling. Fuck yeah!
Man Crush: INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE Dir. Neil Jordan, 1994, R, 123 min SL 10/10
Nowadays, it might be hard to believe that Tom Cruise was ever considered a sex symbol. But back in the 90s, he was a poster boy for smokin hot machismo, and when he joined forces with Brad Pitt in INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, theaters across the country threatened to explode from audience libido. This October, Man Crush is giving you the chance to flash back to Cruises glory days while celebrating the vaguely homoerotic bond between two manly men. Prepare for blood lust (and just plain lust) in this awesomely campy film about vampire bromance and betrayal. Cruises inherent insanity works in his favor (the blonde hair, however, does not), while Pitt does a great job of looking pretty and sad. Supported by a totally creepy Kirsten Dunst and a smoldering Antonio Banderas, this epic story takes us back to a time when vampires were scary, not sparkly, and leading men were encouraged to have ponytails. (Sarah Pitre)
Afternoon Tea: MARIE ANTOINETTE Dir. Sofia Coppola, 2006, PG-13, 123 min SL 10/20
Marie Antoinette is famous for uttering the phrase, Let them eat cake, and at Octobers Afternoon Tea, we will gladly heed her advice. Feast on delectable baked goods while gorging on the sumptuous costumes and sets in Sofia Coppolas exploration of the rise and fall of Frances ill-fated queen. This vivid film makes it easy to covet Marie Antoinettes (Kirsten Dunst) luxurious lifestyle, exquisite gowns and adorable puppies, but it also makes you appreciate the virtues of your own situation (such as having a head). Sure, this screening doesnt include diamond tiaras or horse-drawn carraiges, but we guarantee youll be treated like royalty, minus the whole guillotine thing. Join us for an afternoon of opulence, illicit romance and a drool-worthy amount of shoes as we take a cinematic trip to historic Versailles. Powdered wigs encouraged. (Sarah Pitre)

TAKE YOUR LOVE OF POP CULTURE TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH ACTION PACKS INTERACTIVE MOVIES, PARTIES AND EVENTS!
Tough Guy Cinema: PREDATOR Dir. John McTiernan, 1987, R, 107 min SR 9/9 & 9/13 : LC 9/16 & 9/19 : VL 9/21 & 9/27
It kills for pleasure; it hunts for sport, but this time it picked the wrong prey. Before ARNULD Schwarzenegger and Jesse The Body Ventura worried about state budgets and governing peoples, they teamed up to create cinematic bliss for action movie lovers all over the world. They dazzled us with their fisticuffs tango in The Running Man, but in Predator you can watch them in their rawest form as they battle the Central American jungles and an extra-terrestrial warrior with the help of Carl Dont Call me Apollo Weathers and the rest of their team of elite bad asses. This is one of the purest action movies you will ever hope to see. John Mctiernan casts aside any need for a plot and boils the film down to kill- or-be-killed. But this wouldnt be a Tough Guy Cinema screening if people were simply killing each other, because we LOVE it when things blow up, and boy do they ever. Somebodys arm even gets BLOWN off! Were going into the jungle together on a rescue mission...but we may just encounter the fight of our lives. (Greg MacLennan)
BOY BAND Sing-Along RZ 9/6, 9/13, 9/20 : SR 9/8, 9/20 : VL 9/9 & 9/30 : LC 9/15 & 9/22
Pop Princesses, 80s Movie Jams, and 90s Hip Hop not enough for you? Well, guess what? The Action Pack is bringing back the BOY BAND SING-ALONG. Bring a hankie because, if you are one of those girls who cuddled up next to a Joey McIntyre pillow, this sing-along is going to make you weep all over again. And, fellas...lets not pretend you didnt secretly buy the No Strings Attached album in high school. Its okay; its poppy and delightfuljust own it. Its time to say BYE BYE BYE to those inhibitions and embrace all that made boy bands wonderful with widespread 90s arms. But, were not just throwing all our favorite New Kids videos up on the screen... NO! We are grabbing all our favorite muscular harmonizing men/boys all the way from New Edition up to One Direction with all the NSYNCs and Backstreet Boys in between. Its time to throw on your favorite tech vest, fluff up that hair, and grab three to five friends to move in perfect synchronicity together because the BOY BAND SING-ALONG IS BACK (echo)...back...back...back. SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER Quote-Along Dir. Thomas Schlamme, 1993, PG-13, 93 min RZ 9/27 & 10/11 : VL 10/7 & 10/11 : SR 10/28 & 10/30
Woman! Whoah-man! Whoooooah-man. She was a thief, you gotta believe. She stole my heart and my cat. Back in 1993, every teenager in America could quote Mike Myers parody of beat poetry in SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER, and 20 years later, we still know the lines by heart. Its high time this cult film got the Action Pack celebration it deserves, so were inviting you to join us as we flash back to the 90s and attempt to do our best Scottish accent. Root for Charlie (Mike Myers) as he both adores and fears Harriet (Nancy Travis), the local butcher who may or may not be a serial killer. Get sloshed along with Stuart Mackenzie (also played by Mike Myers) as he jams to the Bay City Rollers and hates on Colonel Sanders. And, most importantly, shout out all of your favorite lines (A piper is down, anyone?) along with people who appreciate this ridiculously silly, not to mention hilarious, comedic gem. (Sarah Pitre)
THE PRINCESS BRIDE Quote-Along Dir. Rob Reiner, 1987, PG, 98 min RZ 9/6, 9/13, 9/21, 9/22 : LC 9/9 & 9/12 :VL 9/23 & 9/26 : SR 9/30 & 10/3
Every line in THE PRINCESS BRIDE has transformed from mere lines in a script to gospel that melts even the coldest of hearts. Inconceivable you say? Well the Action Pack challenges you to a duel of words with our PRINCESS BRIDE QuoteAlong! Join Westley as be duels Vizzini and his crew, braves the dangers of the fire swamp, and overcomes death for true love. Well have all your favorite lines subtitled up on screen karaoke-style for your quoting pleasure, swords for everyone to fight and dramatically switch hands with, as well as a Rescue Princess Buttercup game before the show. So lace up your boots, draw your swords, and prepare for a miracle because this is true love. You think this happens every day? (Greg MacLennan)
FUN FUN FUN FEST presents THE OLD SCHOOL HIP HOP Sing-Along RZ 9/27, 10/11, 10/25 : LC 10/10 : SR 10/14
Were gearing up for the reunion of Run DMC at this years Fun Fun Fun Fest by revisiting one of our favorite Sing-Along shows of all time - the Old School Hip Hop show. Now whenever you start throwing around terms like old school the question always has to be about just how old are we going with this. There are purists who say that anything after 1984 is no longer old school, but at The Action Pack HQ we tend to think that almost 30 years ago is a pretty dated cut off for old school. So were going to go all the way back to some Sugar Hill Gang and Grandmaster Flash classics, but then OF COURSE were moving up into the Run DMC era and bringing in some NWA and LL Cool J then jumping into the 90s a bit with some Naughty by Nature, Pharcyde and 2Pac. So grab your Adidas tracksuit, put on some thick gold chains, and come out to the Alamo ready to answer the most important question of all time: Can I kick it? (Hint - the answer is yes, you can). (Henri Mazza)
Tough Guy Cinema: ROBOCOP Dir. Paul Verhoeven, 1987, R, 102 min SR 10/7 & 10/11 : VL 10/14 & 10/17
Part Man, part machine....ALL HERO. The Detroit of the future is riddled with crime and poverty (in the future, right?), and Omni Consumer Products has just announced that theyve purchased the Detroit PD. Alex Murphy roams the streets as a tough-as-nails cop ready to serve and protect until (SPOILER ALERT!) he finds himself on the wrong end of a shotgun party. OCP owns Murphys corpse and decides to take whats left of him to create their crime fighter of the future: ROBOCOP. At first, everything is all fine and dandy; Robo is cleaning up the streets with his trusty partner Ann Lewis at his side until... Robocop starts having Alex Murphys memories. What follows is one of the greatest action/social-satire/ all-around badass movies Ive ever seen. Come quietly or there will be... trouble. Get your prime directives in order, grab your tickets and prepare for an in-theater pyrotechnic experience that will BLOW YOUR MIND! Now Id buy that for a dollar. (Greg MacLennan)

Master Pancake is going to boil, bake, batter and fry beloved 90s classic FORREST GUMP (1994). Featuring Tom Hanks (TURNER & HOOCH) as a good-hearted shrimp-baron whose hobbies include jogging, ping-pong, eating chocolates, and misunderstanding everything around him. Co-starring: Sally Field (NOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER) as momma Gump, Robin Wright Penn as lady Gump, and Gary Sinise as Gumps bosom buddy. Were excited to bring this Pancake classic out of retirement. Come see Master Pancake (with guest-mocker Scott Chester) give new meaning to the phrase Run, Forrest, Run as they gleefully pursue this overrated icon. (John)
Master Pancake: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD Dir. George A. Romero, 1968, NR, 96 min LC 10/19 & 10/20 : RZ 10/26 & 10/27

Join us downtown this October for a Halloween house-swarming party as we board up the Ritz, make jokes, and try to keep the aimless hordes of 6th Street at bay. George Romeros gritty classic provides the fodder for our first foray into zombie-zinging. The movie details the experiences of being pursued through the countryside by mindless locals. In other words, a typical trip to Pflugerville. This Halloween, bring your finest bath salts, a taste for flesh, and your sense of humor as we gorge ourselves on the granddaddy of all zombie flicks: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. (John)

Dont miss the one-week window to catch this new Pancake classic. Jack-O-Lantern!! (John)

LATE SHOW
NEW AND CLASSIC CELLULOID CULT KICKS FOR LATE NIGHT THRILL SEEKERS. EVERY WEEKEND AT RITZ
The Late Show: MEMENTO Dir. Christopher Nolan, 2001, R, 113 min, 35mm RZ 8/31 & 9/1
Sure, in todays easy breezy technology-centric times we have talking phones and social networks to help us keep track of the details of our personal lives -you know, details like who may have killed our spouse and whos friend or foe (or suspect in said murder). But back in the grimy analog days of the year 2000, you had to keep track of this stuff the old fashioned way: With scrimshaw prison tattoos, polaroids, and sharpie markers. Note to self: Those were the good old days. Anyway, this little indie film about a guy (Guy Pearce) with impressive cheekbones and a nasty case of short term memory loss trying to solve the brutal murder of his wife, as told in front to back order in unsteadying 10-minute jumps that mirror the protagonists own shaky perception, is a still bonafide mind bender of a flick -- one of the very best movies to come outta the early aughts that takes Hitchcockian thrills to a whole new exciting level. And the films director, what became of him, you ask? Well, we hear he went on to direct some movie about heists that take place in peoples minds and a trilogy of films about some guy in a black cape who fights crime. (George Bragdon)
The Late Show: TIME CRIMES Dir. Nacho Vigalondo, 2007, R, 92 min, 35mm RZ 9/7 & 9/8
Already a lauded short film director, Nacho Vigalondo made his feature debut at Fantastic Fest in 2007 with this tense, unstoppable vision of science and natural law gone awry -- and we weve been completely smitten with the crazy Spaniard ever since. An incredibly well-crafted time-travel story, TIMECRIMES isnt loaded with expensive effects, although the visual style of the film is impressive. Instead, the layered science-fiction plot is created through fabulous writing and solid acting from a very small cast of characters. The feeling is something akin to a classic Twilight Zone episode -- taking a clever premise and bringing it to pulsepounding but intelligent new heights. Oh, and the plot? Heres a rather cryptic synopsis of it from Vigalondo himself: A man who accidentally travels back into the past and meets himself. A naked girl in the middle of the forest. A mysterious stranger with his face wrapped in a pink bandage. A disquieting mansion on the top of a hill. All of them pieces of an unpredictable jigsaw puzzle where terror, drama and suspense will lead to an unthinkable crime. Whos the murderer? Whos the victim?

LATE SHOW
The Late Show: BRICK Dir. Rian Johnson, 2005, R, 110 min, 35mm RZ 9/14 & 9/15
At the time BRICK first came out back in 2005, no capsule summary could really do it justice. I mean, something along the lines of: A hard-boiled film noir, set in high school, starring that kid from Third Rock from the Sun. It just sounds like a groan-worthy slice of teensploitation. Only its not. Far from it, in fact. Turns out BRICK was one the best movies to hit the arthouse circuit that summer. Heres the thing though: BRICK is a hard-boiled film noir set in high school and starring that kid from Third Rock from the Sun. Only its a nearly perfect execution of that concept, from its brilliantly conceived teenage underworld, to its unique set of slang, to its Philip Marlowe-esque protagonist played expertly by Joseph GordonLevitt (that up-and-comer who, yes, was on Third Rock). A modern marvel of sharp indie filmmaking, BRICK is totally worth a watch (or re-watch) on the big screen before getting your mind-melted by the efforts of a freshly reunited JGL and director Rian Johnson: The hotly anticipated time-travel thriller LOOPER.
The Late Show: VIDEODROME Dir. David Cronenberg, 1983, R, 87 min, 35mm RZ 10/12 & 10/13
Max (James Woods) heads a Toronto TV station that mainly consists of broadcasting two things: softcore porn and violence. Max wants to break out and show new material in order to get a different audience. Using their pirate satellite dish, his company has found a Malaysian show called Videodrome, which depicts the torture and killing of anonymous victims. Not much more is known about the show, but Max orders it to be on his stations airwaves. Little by little Max begins to uncover the truth behind the mysterious Videodrome. The closer he gets to finding the shows ultimate motive the more he realizes the serious danger he and viewers of the show are in. Part brilliant satire, part surreal sci-fi horror film, VIDEODROME is David Cronenberg at his very best. Darkly funny, terrifying and relevant, this film may not have been the one that put Cronenberg on the map, but it made everybody realize that he was here to stay.
The Late Show: NAKED LUNCH Dir. David Cronenberg, 1991, R, 117 min, 35mm RZ 10/26 & 10/27
For decades it was said that adapting William S. Burroughss seminal groundbreaking novel for the silver screen would not be an easy task. Enter David Cronenberg, who had just finished off a decade of cinematic weirdness and eccentricity throughout the 80s with films like VIDEODROME and DEAD RINGERS. His sensibility turned out to be the perfect match for the prose of Burroughs. Not only using the novel as source material, Cronenberg also incorporates many aspects of Burroughss own life into the film. Its a bold choice, for sure, but its hard to argue with the end result. The film gives us a compelling sense of the novel, the man and his writing process. Featuring a brilliantly deadpan, tongue-incheek lead performance by Peter Weller and an underrated score by Howard Shore, NAKED LUNCH still remains one of the most unique, strange and downright bizarre films Cronenberg, or anybody else for that matter, has ever made.
The Late Show: EXISTENZ Dir. David Cronenberg, 1999, R, 97 min, 35mm RZ 11/2 & 11/3
In the not too distant future, a video game exists that is powered not by electricity, but instead by the human body. There are no controllers, no operations manual or guide, only the signature Cronenbergian bio-port, a new orifice through which human beings enter the organic game world of eXistenZ. An independent game designer greeted with celebrity status, Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh), is on the run from a deadly assassin, who may or may not have damaged her game with a virus. The only way for her to find out is to delve into the world of the game itself. When she and an ambitious marketing trainee, Ted Pikul (Jude Law), plug in, the lines between worlds begin to blur. When everything that distinguishes reality from the game world begins to crumble around them, each is faced with an alarming choice: which is preferable, the real world or the virtual one? eXistenZ is a modern classic, one of David Cronenbergs best and most underrated pictures, dutifully documenting the relationship between man and machine, as well as the psychosis induced by, and consequences of, virtual actions in a physical world. Houda al-Habash, a conservative Muslim preacher, founded a Quran school for girls in Damascus 30 years ago. Every summer, her female students immerse themselves in a rigorous study of Islam. A surprising cultural shift is under way women are claiming space within the mosque. Shot right before the uprising in Syria erupted, THE LIGHT IN HER EYES offers an extraordinary portrait of a leader who challenges the women of her community to live according to Islam, without giving up their dreams. Directors Julia Meltzer and Laura Nix present for Q&A following the screening.
Austin Film Society Essential Cinema La fin de lt: Recent French Cinema Tuesday @ 7:00pm Sept 4 Oct 2 Alamo South Lamar $8 General Admission / $5 AFS members (free with AFS Film Pass or Sustainer Membership)
Its wise to revisit the French cinema every 3-4 years, because there are always new treasures to be discovered. We will start this series rather quietly with a tale of reluctant adultery in a provincial town all because of a beautiful violin solo, which would melt any heart. Going to another remote area of France, we will deliver groceries with Nicolas Cazal and meet a wide array of delightful, if often crotchety, French seniors in an idyllic countryside. Moving back to the metropolises of Paris and Rome, we will spend some time with a beautiful foursome lost in their own obsessions. Then, appropriately for this film series, we will watch a successful producer, who makes the kinds of films perfect for Essential Cinema, feel the weight of his far-flung, over-mortgaged cinematic empire. And finally we will see how a French director superbly handles the international cinematic style in a brutal, violent thriller taking us on an emotional roller-coaster ride which conclusively proves that blood (lots of it) is thicker than Evian. MADEMOISELLE CHAMBON Dir. Stphane Briz, 2009, NR, 101 min, 35mm, French with English subtitles SL 9/4
A small town homebuilder, happily married, unexpectedly finds himself falling in love with a shy teacher when she plays a wistful tune on her violin. Actors Vincent Lindon and Sandrine Kiberlain agreed to play a man and woman falling in love, but only reluctantly since their real-life marriage had ended in separation a few years before making MADEMOISELLE CHAMBON. That natural tension and uncertainty make their characters tentative move toward an extra-marital affair even more suspenseful.
AFS Doc Nights: ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA Dir. Shirley Clarke, 1985, NR, 86 min, 35mm SL 10/17
ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA captures Ornettes evolution over three decades. Returning home to Fort Worth, Texas in 1983 as a famed performer and composer, documentary footage, dramatic scenes, and some of the first music video-style segments ever made, chronicle his boyhood in segregated Texas and his subsequent emergence as an American cultural pioneer and world-class icon. The innovative techniques that director Shirley Clarke and producer Kathelin Hoffman employed in this film very closely parallel the music of the man who is its subject. Clarke defied traditional documentary formats to reveal Ornettes extraordinary vision through her equally extraordinary filmmaking artistry. Critically acclaimed when it released in 1985, the film is even more significant today, as Colemans influence has increased, while Clarke and Hoffmans interpretation of his life and times remain as fresh and exciting as ever.
THE GROCERS SON [Le fils de lpicier] Dir. Eric Guirado, 2007, NR, 96 min, 35mm, French with English Subtitles SL 9/11
A young man, who left his family and small town behind ten years earlier, is reluctantly drawn back into helping out with the family business after his father suffers a heart attack. Despite its inauspicious title, THE GROCERS SON provides a delightful portrait of a young man estranged from his family and hometown in eastern France. Antoine Sforza (sensitively played by easy-on-the-eyes Nicolas Cazal) returns home to take over the family grocery store after his fathers heart attack. While delivering food and sundries to elderly villagers up in the surrounding hills, Antoine not only begins to learn better social skills, but also gets to spend more time with a young woman he slowly comes to love.

BLUEBEARDS EIGHTH WIFE Dir. Ernst Lubitsch, 1938, NR, 85 min, 35mm 10/9 SL
Gary Cooper and Claudette Colbert a perfect pairing, unlike their characters, Michael Brandon and Nicole de Loiselle. He has money (as an American multimillionaire), she doesnt (as a penniless daughter of the Marquis de Loiselle). They meet over a pair of pajamas in an exclusive clothing store. Brandon wants only the pajama top; Nicole takes the bottoms. This classic meet cute nearly leads to the altar, but she discovers she would simply be wife #8, would receive an admirable alimony, and would be forgotten. She will have none of that and sets out to make herself #1 in Brandons heart and mind.
THE FATHER OF MY CHILDREN [Le Pere de Mes Enfants] Dir. Mia Hansen-Lve, 2009, NR, 110 min, 35mm, French with English subtitles SL 9/25
Grgoire Canvel seems to have it all an enviable life with a beautiful wife, three delightful daughters, a home in the countryside, a large condo in Paris, and a fulfilling job as producer of 50 arthouse films of which he is justly proud. But he is being hounded by creditors for large overdue bills and is trying to juggle too many complex productions. Something is about to collapse.
NINOTCHKA Dir. Ernst Lubitsch, 1939, NR, 110 min, 35mm SL 10/16
Garbo not only laughs but is seduced by a French hat! Comrade Nina Ivanovna is dispatched to Paris to see why three Soviet emissaries are taking so long to sell some confiscated jewels for Stalin. She quickly discovers that the trio has been overwhelmed by Western luxuries (like food). Sternly she goes on with the task of trying to sell the jewels, but they belong to a Russian duchess who fled the Revolution and who now sends a suave count to convince Ninotchka to think of other matters. One way is that French hat.
SLEEPLESS NIGHT (Nuit blanche) Dir. Frdric Jardin, 2011, NR, 98 min, digital, French with English subtitles SL 10/2
Drug dealers, corrupt cops, a bag full of cocaine always a lethal, dramatic mix. Writer/director Frdric Jardin ups the ante by tossing in one cop (dirty or covert) desperately searching for his kidnapped son held in a sprawling gangland nightclub. In this brutal but exhilarating action film, we see how profound a fathers love can be.
THAT UNCERTAIN FEELING Dir. Ernst Lubitsch, 1941, NR, 84 min, 35mm SL 10/23
For a while it was a necessity among upper class women to adopt a protg, a talented (or barely so) artist (preferably a musician, who could entertain ones guests at cocktail parties in penthouses). Jill Baker finds her pianist because of hiccoughs, which take her to a psychiatrists office where she learns that despite her perfect marriage to a wonderful man, she is actually miserable and bored. To overcome her malaise, she begins an affair with Alexander Sebastian, a self-obsessed concert pianist. Mr. Baker will have to begin plotting to win back the affections of his wandering wife. Lubitsch delivers a classic comedy of remarriage.
Austin Film Society Essential Cinema Late Have I Loved Thee: Latter Lubitsch Tuesdays @ 7:00pm Oct 9 Nov 6 Alamo South Lamar $8 General Admission / $5 AFS members (free with AFS Film Pass or Sustainer Membership)
Raoul Hernandez returns to AFS Essential Cinema with another star-studded series of films, this time focused on the latter-day works of Ernst Lubitsch (18921947). With an international film career already underway in his native Germany, Lubitsch was seduced by Hollywood with its big budgets and highly professional crewmembers, so he made the leap in 1922. For the next two decades he would turn out some of the most sophisticated comedies Hollywood had ever seen. Even after the Production Code of 1934 stymied so many people, he chose screenwriters and European plays which fit his sensibilities and could push the boundaries of propriety. For this series we will be looking at latter-day Lubitsch films he made in the final decade of his life.
