Job Description The editor in chief is directly responsible for the management, publication and academic excellence of the student newspaper of Santa Barbara City College. To this end, the editor in chief must be a student in good standing, with a minimum 3.2 grade point average. The editor in chief must maintain an A average in all journalism classes. S/he assumes responsibility, in the name of The Channels, for entire editorial and advertising content of each issue. The organization of the newspaper is guided by the editor, and the details of The Channels policy are exeuted under the direction of the editor. The editor has final authority in all cases. Editor in Chief responsibilities (included but not limited to):
Providing leadership: attends all class sessions and The Channels Editorial Board meetings; models good writing, editing, deadline compliance and production skills; helps settle disputes and problems. Chairs The Channels Editorial Board meetings and ensures that meetings are productive, run smoothly and end on time, with all business completed. Acts as liaison between adviser and staff, and staff and student body, faculty, administration and community. Acts as community spokesperson for The Channels Editorial Board. Represents The Channels at meetings and conventions and in correspondence. In consultation with adviser, selects and provides general oversight for section editors. Sees that all stories for The Channels are assigned and deadlines are established. Enforces deadlines for stories and production. Holds primary responsibility for design and layout of the front page and news sections in print edition. Consults with online editor for placement of stories including top stories for the online editions. In cases where online editor is unable to complete his or her tasks, assumes primary responsibilities for coordination section editors publishing online edition. In consultation with the adviser and/or lab teaching assistant, organizes production of the newspaper, including copy editing, computer inputting and formatting, pagination, proofreading and prepress. Plans and directs weekly Editorial Board meetings throughout the semester. This includes writing editorialsor overseeing others writing themon deadline.
As head of the Editorial Board, he supervises the operations of the publication. Working hand-inhand with the Associate Editor and the Managing Editor, he gives assignments to the section editors and the writers/correspondents, supervises the preparation of the layout, writes the editorials, edits all articles, and submits everything to the Adviser for editing. Moreover, he schedules meetings, plans the activities for the publication, and recommends sanctions to staffers for any misbehavior, refusal to perform a directive, neglect of responsibility, and the like. In the performance of his duty, he always consults the Adviser.
Associate Editor
As an assistant to the Editor in Chief, he performs almost all the functions of the EIC especially when
absent. He makes the bulk of the EICs job lighter by ensuring that all articles go through the process and enhancing them without necessarily altering the personal style of the original writers in order to meet the standards of the publication.
News Editor
As section editor for news, he assigns the writers/correspondents to cover events relative to the school. He also writes straight news articles, maintains a column, receives instructions from the Editor in Chief and/or the Associate Editor, edits all news articles, and coordinates with the Managing Editor for the paging of the same.
