Introduction
TheGraduateCollegeadmitsstudentsintoprogramsleadingtobothprofessionalandresearchoriented advanceddegreesbeyondthebachelorsdegree.Themastersanddoctoraldegreesareawardedtostudents completingprogramsthatculminateinresearchandcreativeendeavors.ThePh.D.degreeisthehighest universityaward,conferredoncandidateswhohaveproventheirabilityasscholarsandoriginalresearchers.

AcademicIntegrity
ThehigheststandardsofacademicintegrityandcompliancewiththeuniversitysStudentCodeofConductare expectedofallgraduatestudentsinacademiccourseworkandresearchactivities.Universitypoliciesrelatedto academicintegrityandcodeofconductareavailableintheOfficeofStudentLife.Thefailureofanygraduate studenttoupholdthesestandardsmayresultinseriousconsequencesincludingsuspensionorexpulsionfrom theuniversityand/orothersanctionsasspecifiedintheacademicintegritypoliciesofindividualcollegesaswell astheuniversity. Violationsofacademicintegrityinclude,butarenotlimitedto:cheating,fabrication,tampering,plagiarism,or aidingand/orfacilitatingsuchactivities.Atthegraduatelevel,itisexpectedthatstudentsarefamiliarwiththese issuesandthateachstudentassumespersonalresponsibilityintheirwork.TheGraduateCollegehighly recommendsthatassignments,researchpapers,thesesanddissertationsberunthroughSafeAssignment.

GraduateStudentResponsibilities
Graduatestudentsareresponsibleforfamiliarizingthemselveswithallgraduatepoliciesandprocedures.Each studentshouldalsocommunicatedirectlywiththeiracademicunittobeclearonitsexpectationsfordegree completion. InformationisprovidedtostudentsviaMyASU.StudentsshouldfrequentlychecktheirMyASUaccountforthe mostuptodateinformationregardingtheirstatus,holds,itemstoattendtoandotherinformation. Itisveryimportantthatstudentscheckwiththeirthesis/dissertationadvisorwellinadvanceofdatacollection toensurecompliancewithuniversityregulationsregardingthecollectionofresearchdata.Pleaseseethe sectionofthisguidetitledResearchInvolvingHumanandAnimalSubjects.

Application
SubmissionofanApplication
Foradmissioninformationandprocedures,seegraduate.asu.edu/admissions.Applicationsforallgraduate degreeprograms,certificateprograms,and/ornondegreemustbesubmittedviatheapplicationwebsite. PriortosubmittinganapplicationtotheGraduateCollege,applicantsshouldreviewinformationregardingthe degreeprogram,andacademicunitapplicationrequirementsanddeadlines.Studentswhohaveanapproved leaveofabsenceonfilewiththeGraduateCollegepriortotheirdepartureandarereenteringthesamedegree programforthesemesterimmediatelyfollowingtheapprovedleave,arenotrequiredtosubmitanew application.

ApplicationDeadlines
Applicationdeadlinesaresetbythedegreeprograms.Consulttheprogram'swebsiteortheGraduateDegree& CertificateSearchtoolforspecificapplicationdeadlines. GraduateCollegeapplicationdeadlinesmaydifferfromthoseoftheacademicunit.Toaccommodatetimely processing,internationalapplicantsforfallenrollmentmustsubmitapplicationmaterialsbytheprevious December.Notallacademicunitsacceptapplicationsforboththefallandspringsemesters;however,ifthe academicunitallowsforspringapplications,internationalapplicantsmustsubmitmaterialsforspring enrollmentbythepreviousAugust. ApplicationFee
EachapplicationtoanASUgraduateprogrammustbeaccompaniedbyanonrefundableapplicationfee,payable bycreditcardatthetimeofsubmission.TheapplicationfeeisdevotedtotheGraduateCollegeadministrative costofprocessingallapplicationsandisnotrefundableunderanycircumstance. Domesticapplicationfee:$70; Internationalapplicationfee$90. Inadditiontothenormalapplicationfee,a$50nonrefundablelateprocessingfeewillbeassessedforall applicationssubmittedonorafterthedatesindicatedpreviously. Applicantsreceiveanemailacknowledgementoncetheapplicationhasbeensuccessfullysubmitted.The acknowledgementincludesanASURITEIDandactivationcodesothattheymayfollowtheprogressoftheir applicationthroughMyASU.

ApplicationRequirements
Applicantsmustsubmitofficialtranscriptsfromallpostsecondaryinstitutionspreviouslyattendedtothe GraduateCollege(seegraduate.asu.edu/admissions).Academicunitsmayhaveadmissionrequirementsin additiontothoseoftheGraduateCollege.Manygraduateprogramsrequirescoresfromanationaladmissions testsuchastheGraduateRecordExamination(GRE),GraduateManagementAdmissionTest(GMAT),orthe MillerAnalogiesTest.Someprogramsrequireaportfolio,lettersofrecommendation,astatementofgoals and/oraresume. AlldocumentsreceivedbytheGraduateCollegeinconnectionwithanapplicationbecomepropertyoftheASU GraduateCollegeandwillnotbereturned.

AcademicCredentials
ApplicantswhoattendedschoolintheUnitedStatesmustholdabachelorsdegreefromaregionallyaccredited U.S.institutioninordertobeeligibleforadmission.Applicantsarerequiredtoprovideproofthatabachelors degreewasawardedbeforecompletionoftheirfirstsemesterofgraduatestudiesatASU. ApplicantswhoattendedschooloutsideoftheU.S.mustholdabachelorsdegree,orequivalent,froman institutionthatisofficiallyrecognizedbythatcountry.Iforiginalcredentialsareissuedinalanguageotherthan English,applicantsmustprovidetheoriginallanguagetranscriptsaswellasanofficialandliteraltranslation. Applicantsarerequiredtoprovideproofthatabachelorsdegreewasawardedbeforecompletionoftheirfirst semesterofgraduatestudiesatASU. Applicantsshouldcontactthedegreeprogramforspecificadditionalrequirements.Degreeprogramswillsubmit arecommendationtotheGraduateCollegeDeanregardingtheirwillingnesstoadmitanapplicant. BecauseASUreceivesapplicationsfrommanyhighlyqualifiedstudents,someapplicantsmaybedenied admissionforreasonsnotrelatedtotheiracademicperformance.Examplesinclude,butarenotlimitedto: programcapacity,mentoravailability,and/orprogrammatch.

InternationalApplicants

ApplicantswhowillholdanF1orJ1visamust: 1. MeettheregulationsoftheU.S.ImmigrationandCustomsEnforcement(ICE)agency. 2. Obtaininsurancecoverageagainstillnessandaccidentbeforebeingpermittedtoregisterforclasses. Insurancemustbemaintainedthroughoutthestudentsenrollmentattheuniversity. 3. SubmitproofofEnglishproficiency. 4. SubmitadditionalmaterialsasoutlinedontheGraduateCollegeswebsiteat graduate.asu.edu/admissions. 5. VerifythattheyhavethefinancialresourcestocovertheirexpensesduringgraduatestudyatASU. TheFinancialGuaranteeformisavailablethroughtheGraduateCollegewebsiteat graduate.asu.edu/forms.InadditiontotheFinancialGuaranteeform,ifASUisprovidingan assistantship,anofficialofferlettermustbesenttotheGraduateCollege.Similarly,ifagovernmental

entityisfundingthestudent,anofficialletterfromthegovernmentmustbesubmittedtothe GraduateCollegeinadditiontotheFinancialGuaranteeform. TheI20ortheDS2019(documentsneededtoobtainastudentvisa)isissuedonlyafterthecompletedand properlyverifiedFinancialGuaranteeform,proofofEnglishproficiencyandsupportingdocumentshavebeen receivedbytheGraduateCollege.InternationalstudentsmayenrollatASUonlyiftheyhavebeenadmittedtoa degreeprogram,acertificateprogram,orthepostbaccalaureateteachereducationprogram.Immediately uponarrivaloncampus,studentsmustreporttoanadvisorintheInternationalStudentandScholarsOffice (ISSO).Failuretoreportmayresultinlossofstatusordeportation. ApplicantsresidingintheU.S.onavalidvisamustprovideproofofacurrentvisa.Enlargeimageandfaxthe copyto(480)9655158.

EnglishLanguageRequirement
ApplicantsfromacountrywhosenativelanguageisnotEnglishmustprovideproofofEnglishproficiency. Acceptableproofisasfollows: TOEFLscoreofatleast550(PBT)or80(iBT).TheTOEFLisadministeredbyTOEFL/TSEServices.ASUs institutionalcodeis4007.ASUacceptsonlyelectroniccopiesoftheTOEFLscorereport. IELTSoverallbandscoreofatleast6.5withnobandbelow6.0.TheIELTSisadministeredbythe UniversityofCambridge.Noinstitutionalcodeisneeded. PearsonTestofEnglish(PTE)scoreofatleast60.ThePTEisadministeredbyPearson. IndividualacademicunitsmayhavehigherrequirementsforEnglishproficiency.Consulttheacademicunits website.Englishproficiencyisonlyvalidfortwoyearsandmustbetakenwithintwoyearsfromthebeginningof thesemesterforwhichthestudentapplied. SomeapplicantsareexemptfromtheEnglishproficiencyrequirement.Thefollowingexceptionsmustbemet exactlytobeconsideredforanexemption: Applicantswhohaveearnedabachelorsdegreeorhigherfromaregionallyaccredited college/universityintheUnitedStates. Applicantswhohavecompletedatleast12semesterhoursofgraduatecourseworkwithacumulative GPAof3.0(ona4.0scale)orhigherataregionallyaccrediteduniversityintheUnitedStates. Applicantswhohavecompletedatleast90semesterhoursofundergraduatecourseworkwitha cumulativeGPAof3.0(ona4.0scale)orhigherataregionallyaccreditedcollege/universityinthe UnitedStates. ApplicantswhohavecompletedtheAmericanEnglishandCultureProgram(AECP)AdvancedLevelII withgradesofBorbetteralongwiththerecommendationoftheDirectorofAECP. AllinternationalapplicantswhoarefromacountrywhosenativelanguageisnotEnglishandwhowishtoapply forteachingassistantshipsmustpassanexaminationthatcertifiestheirskillinspeakingEnglisheitherthe InterviewTest,ortheSpeakingProficiencyEnglishAssessmentKit(SPEAK)test.TestsareadministeredatASU; additionalinformationmaybefoundathttp://global.asu.edu/aecp/ita.

PostBaccalaureateNonDegreePrograms
Applicantswhodonotimmediatelyintendtopursueagraduatedegreemayapplyasapostbaccalaureatenon degreestudent.Theapplicationprocessdoesnotrequirethesubmissionofacademiccredentialsortestscores unlessapplyingtoagraduatecertificateprogram. NondegreeapplicantsmusthaveearnedabachelorsdegreefromaU.S.regionallyaccreditedinstitutionorthe equivalentofaU.S.bachelorsdegreefromaninternationalinstitutionthatisofficiallyrecognizedbythat country. Thereisnolimittothetotalcumulativecredithoursastudentcantakeasanondegreestudent.However,to applythecredithourstowardanASUmastersordoctoraldegree,studentsarelimitedtoninecredithours takenwithinthreeyearsofadmissiontoamastersdegreeprogramandtwelvecredithourspriortoadmission toadoctoraldegree. Nondegreestudymayberestrictedbycertainacademicunits.Contactthedegreeprogramforrestriction information. Financialaidisnotavailabletonondegreestudents. NondegreestudyistypicallynotavailabletointernationalstudentsonF1orJ1visas.Forexceptions,priorto applying,youmustobtainwrittenapprovalfromyourDesignatedSchoolOfficialgrantingpermissionforyouto takeclasses.

AfterApplying
Afteranapplicationhasbeensuccessfullysubmitted,applicantsreceiveanemailacknowledgementthat includesanASURITEIDandactivationcode.ApplicantsshouldreviewMyASUtocheckontheapplicationstatus, ToDoitemsandHolds.Foradditionalinformationsee http://graduate.asu.edu/admissions/after_you_apply.

Admission
Aminimumgradepointaverageof3.0(ona4.0scale)inthelast60semesterhoursor90quarterhoursof undergraduatecourseworkisrequiredtobeconsideredforadmissiontoanASUgraduatedegreeprogram. AcademicunitssubmitrecommendationsregardingadmissiondecisionstotheGraduateCollege;onlytheDean oftheGraduateCollegecanmakeformaloffersofadmission. ApplicantsmaycheckthestatusoftheirapplicationthroughMyASU.Ifadmitted,theformalletterofadmission canbedownloadedfromMyASU.Ifdeniedadmission,lettersaresenttotheemailaddressonrecord.

AdmissionTypes
RegularAdmission:Applicantsatisfiesallrequirementsforadmissionandisacademicallyacceptableto boththedegreeprogramandtheGraduateCollege. RegularAdmissionwithDeficiencies:Applicantsgradesandtestscoresareatanacceptablelevelbut applicantdoesnothavetheacademicbackgroundexpectedbythedegreeprogramandtheuniversity. Requireddeficiencycoursesmaynotbeappliedtowardtheminimumhoursrequiredforthedegree program.Monitoringdeficiencycompletionistheresponsibilityoftheacademicunit. ProvisionalAdmission:Applicantdoesnotmeetminimumacademicstandardswithrespecttograde pointaveragesasrequiredbytheGraduateCollegeandtheacademicunit,buthasadditionalevidence tosuggestthepotentialforsuccess.Thisstatusprovidestheacademicunitwithanopportunityto betterevaluatethestudentsacademicpotential.Studentshaveamaximumofoneacademicyearto satisfytheprovisionalcondition.TheGraduateCollegewillwithdrawstudentsfromthedegree programwhohavenotmeettheprovisionsoftheiradmissionwithintherequiredtimeframe.When studentshavesatisfiedtheprovisionalrequirements,theyshouldconfirmwiththeacademicunitthata changeofstatushasbeenrecommended.StudentswithProvisionalAdmissionarenoteligibletosubmit aPlanofStudy.

DeferAdmission
Studentsmay,withtherecommendationofthedegreeprogram,defertheirinitialsemesterandyearof admissiontothenextsemesterforwhichthedegreeprogramisadmittingstudents.Nofurtherdeferralsare allowed.

InternationalStudentAdmission
InternationalstudentsplanningtoattendASUonanF1studentvisaoraJ1exchangevisitorvisamustprovide documentationrequiredbytheUnitedStatesCitizenshipandImmigrationServices.Visadocumentsareonly issuedforinternationalstudentsenrolledinadegreeprogramorthepostbaccalaureateteachereducation program.TherearestrictregulationsregardingwhenanI20orDS2019canbeissued.Detailedinformation maybefoundat:http://graduate.asu.edu/admissions/international/visa_immigration

Registration and Enrollment


AllstudentsarerequiredtohaveproofofmeaslesimmunizationsonfilewithStudentHealthpriorto registration. GraduatestudentsregisterthroughMyASUaccordingtotheirenrollmentappointment.Detailsregarding registrationandcoursedrop/addproceduresareprovidedintheRegistrationandTuitionPaymentGuide.

EnrollmentVerificationGuidelines
TheuniversitysRegistrarsOfficewillverifystudentenrollmenteachsemesteraccordingtothegeneral guidelinesthatfollow.

MaximumCourseLoad
TheGraduateCollegedoesnothaveamaximumcredithourenrollmentpolicy.Itisexpectedthatacademic advisorswillsetcourseloadsfortheirstudentsthatfacilitateacademicsuccess.

ContinuousEnrollment
Onceadmittedtoagraduatedegreeprogramorgraduatecertificateprogram,studentsmustberegisteredfora minimumofonecredithourduringallphasesoftheirgraduateeducation,includingtheterminwhichthey graduate.Thisincludesperiodswhenstudentsareengagedinresearch,workingonordefendingthesesor dissertations,takingcomprehensiveexaminations,takingGraduateForeignLanguageexaminations,orinany otherwayutilizinguniversityresources,facilitiesorfacultytime. Registrationforeveryfallsemesterandspringsemesterisrequired.Summerorwinterregistrationisrequired forstudentstakingexaminations,completingculminatingexperiences,defendingthesesordissertations,or graduatingfromthedegreeprogram. Ifastudentwishestowithdrawfromallgraduatedegreeprogramsandtheuniversity,theymustcompletethe VoluntaryWithdrawalform.StudentsmuststillcompletetheappropriateformswiththeUniversityRegistrarto withdrawfromtheircourses.InternationalstudentsshouldcontacttheInternationalStudentandScholars Office(ISSO)beforesubmittingaVoluntaryWithdrawalform,asitmostlikelywillaffecttheirvisastatus.

VoluntaryWithdrawalfromaGraduateDegreeProgram
Ifastudentwishestotransitionfromonegraduatedegreeprogramtoanothergraduatedegreeprogram,the studentshouldcompletetheVoluntaryWithdrawalform.Thestudentsshouldnottakethisactionuntilthey havebeenadmittedtotheothergraduatedegreeprogram.

DoctoralDegreeMaximumTimeLimit
Doctoralstudentsmustcompleteallprogramrequirementswithinatenyearperiod.Thetenyearperiodbegins withthesemesterandyearofadmissiontothedoctoralprogram.Graduatecoursestakenpriortoadmission thatareincludedontheiPOSmusthavebeencompletedwithinthreeyearsofthesemesterandyearof admissiontotheprogram(previouslyawardedmastersdegreesusedonthePlanofStudyareexempt). Upontherecommendationoftheheadoftheacademicunit,theGraduateCollegeDeanappointsthestudents dissertationcommittee.Thecommitteemustbecomprisedofatleastthreemembers,includingeitherachairor cochairs.Doctoralprogramsmayhaveadditionalrequirementsforcommitteecomposition.Thiscommittee servesastheintellectualguideforthestudentandmustapprovetheresearch/scholarlyfocusandsubstanceof thedissertation.Themembersofthedissertationcommitteehavethenecessaryknowledgeandskillstoadvise thestudentduringtheformulationoftheresearchtopicandduringthecompletionoftheresearchandthe dissertation. DissertationchairsandcochairsmustbeapprovedbytheGraduateCollegeDeanandeachdegreeprogram maintainsthelistoffacultyapprovedbytheGraduateCollegetodoso.MostresidentfacultyatASUmayserve ondissertationcommitteeswiththeprovisothattheyhaveappropriateexpertiseinthediscipline. DoctoralComprehensiveExamination
StudentsmustbeingoodacademicstandingregardingGPArequirements(seeprevioussectiontitled SatisfactoryAcademicProgress)priortotakingdoctoralcomprehensiveexaminations. WhenstudentshaveessentiallycompletedthecourseworkonanapprovediPOS,theymustrequestpermission totakethedoctoralcomprehensiveexamination.Thedoctoralcomprehensiveexaminationmusthaveawritten component;howeverindividualdoctoralprogramsmayrequireanadditionalsubsequentoralcomponentofthe comprehensiveexamforalloftheirstudentsbasedontheacademicprogresspolicyoftheprogram.These examination(s)aredesignedtoassessastudent'smasteryofthefieldofspecialization.Doctoralcomprehensive examination(s)areadministeredbyacommitteeconsistingofaminimumofthreemembers. DoctoralProspectusDefense
Alldoctoraldegreeprogramsthatrequirestudentstocompleteadissertationmustrequirestudentsto completeadissertationproposal/prospectusandsubmittheresultstotheGraduateCollege.Failureofthe doctoraldissertationprospectusoraldefenseisconsideredfinalunlessthesupervisorycommitteeandthehead oftheacademicunitrecommend,andtheGraduateCollegeDeanapproveasecondproposaldefense.Ifa petitionisapproved,thestudentmustsubmitthenewprospectusbytheendofsixmonths(thesixmonths beginsfromthedatethatthefirstdoctoraldissertationproposaldefensewasheld).Iftheacademicunitdoes notgrantthestudentpermissiontoretaketheproposaldefense,orifthestudentfailstopasstheretakeofthe proposaldefense,theGraduateCollegemaywithdrawthestudentfromthedegreeprogram.

DoctoralCandidacy
Doctoralstudents(withspecificdegreeprogramexceptionsapprovedbytheGraduateCollegeDean)achieve candidacystatusuponthesuccessfulcompletionofthecomprehensiveexamination(s),theForeignLanguage Examination(ifapplicable),andsuccessfullydefendingthedissertationprospectus(ifapplicable).Doctoral studentswhohavebeenadvancedtocandidacyarerequiredtomaintaincontinuousenrollmentuntilalldegree requirementshavebeencompletedandthestudentgraduated.

DoctoralDissertation/DissertationDefense
Thewrittendoctoraldissertationisbasedonanoriginalandsubstantialscholarlyworkthatconstitutesa significantcontributiontoknowledgeinthestudentsdiscipline.Thedissertationresearchmustbeconducted duringthetimeofthestudentsdoctoralstudiesatASU,underguidanceofASUGraduateFaculty,andin accordancewithGraduateCollegepoliciesandprocedures.Thecompositionofthedissertationisdefinedby thedegreeprogramwiththeapprovaloftheGraduateCollegeDean. Thedissertationresearchexperienceculminatesinafinaloralexam,commonlyknownasthedissertation defense.Afinalpublicdissertationdefenseisrequired.Studentsmustbephysicallypresentattheoraldefense oftheirdissertation.Duringthesemesterthatthestudentdefendsthedissertationtheyarerequiredtoregister for: AtleastonesemesterhourofcreditthatappearsonthePlanofStudy;OR Atleastonesemesterhourofappropriategraduatelevelcredit,forexample:Research(792), Dissertation(799),orContinuingRegistration(795);OR Atleastonehourofagraduatelevelcourse. CertificateRequirements

ConcurrentMastersDegrees
Astudentmaypursueconcurrentmastersdegreeswithpriorwrittenapprovalfromtheheadoftheacademic unitforeachdegreeprogramandtheGraduateCollege.Amaximumof20percentoftheminimumtotal semesterhoursforthecompletionofbothdegreesmaybecommonhourssharedbetweenthePlansofStudy. Thetotalnumberofhourscommontobothdegreeprogramsmayvaryfromthismaximumvalueonlywhenthe GraduateCollegehasformallyapprovedcoordinateddegreeprograms. Courseworkcommontobothprogramsmustconstituteawellplannedandmeaningfulpartofeachofthe programsandmayonlyincludecourseworkcompletedafteradmissiontobothdegreeprograms.Inallcases, theguidelinesbelowmustbefollowed: 1. MastersinPassing(MIP)
InthosecaseswherethereisanapprovedMastersinPassing(MIP)programinplaceforadoctoraldegree, thosedoctoralstudentswhocompletetherequirementsoftheapprovedMIPmaybeawardedtherelated mastersdegree.StudentsshouldcheckwiththeirdoctoralprogramtoseeifthereisanapprovedMastersin Passingfortheirdegree. Studentswhoinclude30hoursfromapreviouslyawardedmastersdegreeontheirdoctoralPlanofStudyare noteligibleforaMastersinPassing.AllcourseworkincludedinanMIPPlanofStudymusthavebeen completedafterthesemesterandyearofadmissiontothedoctoralprogram.

Bachelors/MastersDegree(4+1)
SomeacademicunitsofferhighachievingstudentsanopportunitytopursueaBachelors/Mastersdegree program(commonlyreferredtoas4+1).The4+1programsmustbeformallyapprovedandareavailableonlyto ASUstudents. Studentsadmittedto4+1degreeprogramsmaytakeASUgraduatelevelcoursesasanundergraduatestudent thataresharedwithboththebachelorsdegreeandthemastersdegreeenablingthemtoobtainbothdegrees withinfiveyears;providedtheapprovedprogramallowsforthesharingofcredithours.Studentsdonot graduatewithbothdegreesduringthesamesemesterofenrollment;uponcompletionofthebachelorsdegree studentsareenrolledasgraduatestudentsforcompletionofthemastersdegree.Studentsshouldcontacttheir academicunitforspecificinformation. Research Considerations
Themastersthesisanddoctoraldissertation(orequivalent)mustbebasedonoriginalandindependent research/creativeactivityconductedbythestudent,undertheguidanceofthegraduatesupervisorycommittee. Thethesisisanintroductiontoscholarlywritingandisintendedtocreateanunderstandingoftheoryand methodsapplicabletoonesfield.Thedissertationshoulddemonstratethecandidatesmasteryofresearchand scholarlymethodologies,theory,andtoolsofthediscipline.Boththethesisanddissertationshoulddemonstrate thecandidatesabilitytoaddressamajorintellectualproblemandtoproposemeaningfulquestionsand hypotheses,aswellasutilizethemethodswithwhichtostudytheproposedresearchquestion(s)andrelated hypotheses,anddrawconclusions.

SupervisoryCommittees
Studentsareguidedbyfacultymentorswhoadvisethemthroughtheirdegreeprogram.Studentsshould identifytheiradvisorsearlyintheirgraduatecareerandlooktothemforguidanceintheirgraduatework.Once thestudenthasselectedathesis/dissertationcommittee,theheadoftheacademicunitrecommendsthe supervisorycommitteetotheGraduateCollegeDeanwhoreviewsandappointstheCommittee.Graduate supervisorycommitteesmustconsistofaminimumofthreeindividuals,includingthechairorcochairs. Theoraldefenseengagesthesupervisorycommitteeandthecandidateinacriticalandanalyticaldiscussionof theresearchandfindingsofthestudy,aswellasareviewofthecontributionoftheresearchtopictoadvancing knowledgeinthatdiscipline.Thepresentationofathesisordissertationdefenseinanopenforumfostersa broaderawarenessofthestateofgraduateresearchatASU,promotesawiderscholarlydialogueamong disciplines,andrecognizespubliclythescholarlycontributionsofmastersordoctoralcandidates. DefensesmustbescheduledwiththeGraduateCollegeatleast10workingdaysinadvanceofthedefensedate. ItisexpectedthatoraldefenseswillbeheldonanASUcampusduringregularbusinesshoursinorderto facilitatestudent,faculty,andpublicaccessibility.Whentherearesoundeducationalreasonsforholdinga defenseunderdifferentcircumstances,contacttheGraduateCollegeforapprovalbeforeschedulingthe defense. Graduate Student Appeals


TheGraduateCouncilAppealsBoard(GCAB)servesastheappealsbodyforgraduatestudentsseekingredress onacademicdecisionsregardingtheirgraduateprograms.Beforeinitiatinganappeal,thegraduatestudent mustfullyutilizeallotherappealandreviewprocessesavailableinthestudentsprogram,academicunit,or college/school.ThestudentshouldalsodiscussthesituationwiththeGraduateCollegedeansofficetoexplore resolutionofthematterattheunitorcollegelevelbeforefilinganappeal. TheGCABreviewswrittenappealsofgraduatestudentsconcerning: Retentioningraduateprograms(withthelimitationsdescribedbelow).

Proceduralmattersingraduatestudentprograms(e.g.,proceduresrelatedtoPlansofStudy,theses, dissertations,andpreliminary,qualifyingorcomprehensiveexams).
